Abstract

The 2022 Roadmap is the next update in the series of Plasma Roadmaps published by Journal of Physics D with the intent to identify important outstanding challenges in the field of low-temperature plasma (LTP) physics and technology. The format of the Roadmap is the same as the previous Roadmaps representing the visions of 41 leading experts representing 21 countries and five continents in the various sub-fields of LTP science and technology. In recognition of the evolution in the field, several new topics have been introduced or given more prominence. These new topics and emphasis highlight increased interests in plasma-enabled additive manufacturing, soft materials, electrification of chemical conversions, plasma propulsion, extreme plasma regimes, plasmas in hypersonics, data-driven plasma science and technology and the contribution of LTP to combat COVID-19. In the last few decades, LTP science and technology has made a tremendously positive impact on our society. It is our hope that this roadmap will help continue this excellent track record over the next 5-10 years.

Abstract

Prostate cancer is a highly heritable disease with large disparities in incidence rates across ancestry populations. We conducted a multiancestry meta-analysis of prostate cancer genome-wide association studies (107,247 cases and 127,006 controls) and identified 86 new genetic risk variants independently associated with prostate cancer risk, bringing the total to 269 known risk variants. The top genetic risk score (GRS) decile was associated with odds ratios that ranged from 5.06 (95% confidence interval (CI), 4.84-5.29) for men of European ancestry to 3.74 (95% CI, 3.36-4.17) for men of African ancestry. Men of African ancestry were estimated to have a mean GRS that was 2.18-times higher (95% CI, 2.14-2.22), and men of East Asian ancestry 0.73-times lower (95% CI, 0.71-0.76), than men of European ancestry. These findings support the role of germline variation contributing to population differences in prostate cancer risk, with the GRS offering an approach for personalized risk prediction.Copyright © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature America, Inc.

Abstract

Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics published the first Plasma Roadmap in 2012 consisting of the individual perspectives of 16 leading experts in the various sub-fields of low temperature plasma science and technology. The 2017 Plasma Roadmap is the first update of a planned series of periodic updates of the Plasma Roadmap. The continuously growing interdisciplinary nature of the low temperature plasma field and its equally broad range of applications are making it increasingly difficult to identify major challenges that encompass all of the many sub-fields and applications. This intellectual diversity is ultimately a strength of the field. The current state of the art for the 19 sub-fields addressed in this roadmap demonstrates the enviable track record of the low temperature plasma field in the development of plasmas as an enabling technology for a vast range of technologies that underpin our modern society. At the same time, the many important scientific and technological challenges shared in this roadmap show that the path forward is not only scientifically rich but has the potential to make wide and far reaching contributions to many societal challenges.

8. Glass sphere discharges for ozone production

Abstract

We have assessed the production of ozone in a dielectric barrier discharge in which the discharge space is packed with glass spheres. We found that the presence of the glass spheres decreased the breakdown voltage, but that the ozone production rate was smaller at higher voltages than for a conventional air-gap ozonizer. The character of the discharge was found to range between a steady glow and short-lived filaments, depending on the sphere diameter, the width of the discharge gap, the voltage, the gas flow, and the discharge gas. 9. Color separation in an argon-helium arc due to radiative properties and demixing

Abstract

Free-burning arcs in argon-helium mixtures containing a large proportion of helium show a separation between the pink color characteristic of helium arcs and the violet color typical of argon arcs. Two effects are shown to contribute to this; first, demixing, which concentrates helium in the high-temperature region near the center of the arc, and second the fact that the radiative emission from helium, relative to that from argon, increases with temperature. 10. Diffusion of the erosion products of copper electrodes from electric arc channel

Abstract

The diffusion of vapour derived from electrodes is investigated for low erosion rates. In the case of low temperatures, the problem is solved analytically for free-burning and wall-stabilized electric arcs. For a wider temperature range, the problem is solved by numerical simulation. The temperature profile for the free-burning electric arc was obtained using a Gaussian approximation of experimental results.

Abstract

I Adamovich et al 2017 J. Phys. D: Appl. Phys. 50 323001, Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics published the first Plasma Roadmap in 2012 consisting of the individual perspectives of 16 leading experts in the various sub-fields of low temperature plasma science and technology. The 2017 Plasma Roadmap is the first update of a planned series of periodic updates of the Plasma Roadmap. The continuously growing interdisciplinary nature of the low temperature plasma field and its equally broad range of applications are making it increasingly difficult to identify major challenges that encompass all of the many sub-fields and applications. This intellectual diversity is ultimately a strength of the field. The current state of the art for the 19 sub-fields addressed in this roadmap demonstrates the enviable track record of the low temperature plasma field in the development of plasmas as an enabling technology for a vast range of technologies that underpin our modern society. At the same time, the many important scientific and technological challenges shared in this roadmap show that the path forward is not only scientifically rich but has the potential to make wide and far reaching contributions to many societal challenges.
