Accelerometers are commonly used, yet the process of calibrating them and the influence this has on recorded accelerations is rarely reported. The aim of this study was to compare the accuracy of three simple gravity based calibration methods of accelerometers. Using a custom made rig, 16 Delsys Trigno sensors were simultaneously calibrated by positioning the sensors in 9 positions throughout the full range of orientations across three axes. Three calibration methods were used spanning a range of 1g (1G), 2g (2G), and 2g with optimisation (2Gopt). Errors were greatest in 1G (RMSD=3.1%) and equally as good for the 2G and 2Gopt (2.1%). Gravity based calibration of accelerometers can be achieved quickly, and calibration over a larger range provides more accurate results. This work provides recommendations of accelerometer use which help the applied practitioner to collect more reliable and valid data. Further investigation of factors, including those affecting the frequency of calibration, is required.

Feedback has been shown to be an influential component in skill development, yet this has not been assessed longitudinally in a complex motor skill. Novices (n=32) were introduced to a lunge touch task. Visual biofeedback were given on the timing and magnitude of rear leg kinematics. Results showed that those who received feedback adapted their movement patterns by developing extension velocity magnitudes (40.0%, 24.8% and 28.9% increases for the hip, knee and ankle respectively). The changes were retained across 26 weeks, with a reducing visit schedule of feedback. These results demonstrate that knowledge of performance based biofeedback interventions alone are effective in developing whole limb contributions in an explosive task, and that a reducing visit schedule negates dependence on feedback.

A simple method to quantify the kinematic chain in a propulsive task would facilitate assessment of athlete effectiveness. The study’s aim was to assess if the kinematic chain distinguishes between skill levels. Fencers were separated into two groups based on attacking lunge ability (7 skilled; 8 novices). Rear leg 3D joint angular extension velocity magnitudes and timings, sword kinematics and rear leg kinetics were obtained in the propulsion phase of the attacking lunge. Skilled fencers obtained greater sword velocity (3.24 ± 0.24 m∙s−1 vs. 2.69 ± 0.29 m∙s−1; p = 0.02). The skilled group had a greater sequential kinematic chain of the hip, knee and ankle, demonstrated by significantly greater ankle angular velocity (9.1 ± 2.1 rad·s−1 skilled; 5.4 ± 2.9 rad·s−1 novice). Ankle plantarflexion velocity showed a strong positive correlation with horizontal peak force (r = 0.81; p < 0.01). The skilled group demonstrated greater horizontal impulse (1.85 ± 0.29 N·s·kg−1 skilled; 1.45 ± 0.32 N·s·kg−1 novice), suggesting greater effectiveness in applying the kinematic chain towards horizontal propulsion. Analysis of the kinematic chain, which was able to distinguish between skill levels in a propulsive task, is an effective and simple paradigm to assess whole limb contributions to propulsive movements.

Novices (n=14) were introduced to a lunge touch task. Visual biofeedback were given on the timing and magnitude of rear leg kinematics. Results showed that those who received feedback adapted their movement patterns by developing extension velocity magnitudes in a summative pattern (pre v post, mean ± SD peak ankle angular velocity: biofeedback; 479 ± 181 v 689 ± 117, control; 466 ± 106 v 477 ± 84 deg·sˉ¹), resulting in greater horizontal impulse (mean ± SD: biofeedback; 1.17 ± 0.60 v 1.7 ± 0.89, control; 1.33 ± 0.33 v 1.49 ± 0.33 N·s·kgˉ¹). The changes were retained after six weeks. These results demonstrate that knowledge of performance based biofeedback interventions alone are effective in developing whole limb contributions in an explosive task.

Squatting movements are often used to assess known risk factors of injury such as knee valgus angle. This study aims to investigate the knee kinematics during unilateral and bilateral squats in relation to the dominant and non-dominant leg. Five uninjured participants completed three squats in three conditions; dominant unilateral, non-dominant unilateral and bilateral. Knee extension and valgus angles were calculated. Maximum knee valgus angle was higher in the non-dominant unilateral trial than the same leg during the bilateral squat (unilateral = 10.6°, bilateral = 8.4°; p < 0.05). Knee extension angles were significantly lower during bilateral squats (unilateral = 111.9° & 109.2°, bilateral = 97.5° & 98.2°; p < 0.05). Limb dominance effects knee valgus during squatting, and should therefore be taken into account during injury risk assessments.

Proximal to distal sequencing has been demonstrated in a variety of movements as an optimal solution to generating maximal propulsion. This study aimed to identify whether the kinematic chain is used in the fencing attacking lunge. Six novice and four expert fencers completed attacking lunge movements. Kinematic data were captured, and joint angular velocities compared. The expert group demonstrated a proximal to distal sequence in the rear leg which was not as evident in the novices, resulting in a significantly greater ankle extension velocity (564 ± 132 °.s-1 expert versus 273 ± 184 °.s-1 novice; p<0.05). This sequential pattern capitalizes on the design of the human musculoskeletal system, allowing for greater forward sword velocity to be achieved. The kinematic chain of the rear leg has an optimal solution adopted by expert fencers in the attacking lunge skill.

Context: A single talocrural joint-mobilization treatment has improved spatiotemporal measures of postural control but not ankle arthrokinematics in individuals with chronic ankle instability (CAI). However, the effects of multiple treatment sessions on these aspects of function have not been investigated. Objective: To examine the effect of a 2-wk anterior-to-posterior joint-mobilization intervention on instrumented measures of single-limb-stance static postural control and ankle arthrokinematics in adults with CAI. Design: Repeated measures. Setting: Research laboratory. Participants: 12 individuals with CAI (6 male, 6 female; age 27.4 ± 4.3 y, height 175.4 ± 9.78 cm, mass 78.4 ± 11.0 kg). Intervention: Subjects received 6 treatments sessions of talocrural grade II joint traction and grade III anterior-to-posterior joint mobilization over 2 wk. Main Outcome Measures: Instrumented measures of single-limb-stance static postural control (eyes open and closed) and anterior and posterior talar displacement and stiffness were assessed 1 wk before the intervention (baseline), before the first treatment (preintervention), 24-48 h after the final treatment (postintervention), and 1 wk later (1-wk follow-up). Postural control was analyzed as center-of-pressure velocity, center-of-pressure range, the mean of time-to-boundary minima, and standard deviation of time-to-boundary minima in the anteroposterior and mediolateral directions for each visual condition. Results: No significant differences were identified in any measures of postural control (P > .08) or ankle arthrokinematics (P > .21). Conclusions: The 2-wk talocrural joint-mobilization intervention did not alter instrumented measures of single-limb-stance postural control or ankle arthrokinematics. Despite the absence of change in these measures, this study continues to clarify the role of talocrural joint mobilization as a rehabilitation strategy for patients with CAI. © 2014 Human Kinetics, Inc.
