Abstract

A lysimeter study on effect of waste water application from starch and sugar beet processing factories on balance of nitrates and chlorides : plants uptake and leaching losses. Lysimeters established in undisturbed chalk soil were used for the study of trans¬ formations and transport of nutrients added to soil from waste waters obtained from factories producing starch from potatoes and sugar from sugar beet. Observations were made for several years of effect of dressings of starch water made every other year between 1973 and 1977 and sugar-beet water between 1977 and 1979, and the time that nitrate and chloride remained in the soil and the fraction lost by leaching from the root zone. The yied of sugar beet and wheat permet the estimation for the contribution of nutrients in the waste water and these results, from field experiments, agree well with prediction from incubation studies of the kinetic of mineralisation., Des lysimètres sont établis en sol de craie non remanié, pour étudier la transformation et le transport des substances apportées lors d'épandages d'eaux résiduaires d'industries agricoles : féculerie de pomme-de-terre et sucrerie : le suivi, sur plusieurs années d'épandages effectués soit en une seule fois, soit avec un rythme bisannuel, permet de préciser pour les nitrates et les chlorures, les temps de séjour dans le sol et la fraction entraînée hors de la zone racinaire. Les rendements des cultures de la rotation betterave-blé permettent d'apprécier la fourniture de fertilisants par l'eau résiduaire et de vérifier la concordance satisfaisante entre comportement au champ et prévisions faites à partir d'études en incubation sur la cinétique de minéralisation de ces déchets., Muller J. Abstract

Computed tomography (CT) assessment of positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP)-induced alveolar recruitment is classically achieved by quantifying the decrease in nonaerated lung parenchyma on a single juxtadiaphragmatic section (Gattinoni's method). This approach ignores the alveolar recruitment occurring in poorly aerated lung areas and may not reflect the alveolar recruitment of the entire lung. This study describes a new CT method in which PEEP-induced alveolar recruitment is computed as the volume of gas penetrating in poorly and nonaerated lung regions following PEEP. In 16 patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome a thoracic spiral CT scan was performed in ZEEP and PEEP 15 cm H(2)O. According to the new method, PEEP induced a 119% increase in functional residual capacity (FRC). PEEP-induced alveolar recruitment was 499 +/- 279 ml whereas distension and overdistension of previously aerated lung areas were 395 +/- 382 ml and 28 +/- 6 ml, respectively. The alveolar recruitment according to Gattinoni's method was 26 +/- 24 g and no correlation was found between both methods. A significant correlation was found between PEEP-induced alveolar recruitment and increase in Pa(O(2)) only when recruitment was assessed by the new method (Rho = 0.76, p = 0.003), suggesting that it may be more accurate than Gattinoni's method.
