We constrain the sky-projected obliquities of two low-density hot Neptune planets, HATS-38 b and WASP-139 b, orbiting nearby G and K stars using Rossiter-McLaughlin (RM) observations with VLT/ESPRESSO, yielding $\lambda = -108_{-16}^{+11}$ deg and $-85.6_{-4.2}^{+7.7}$ deg, respectively. To model the RM effect, we use a new publicly available code, ironman, which is capable of jointly fitting transit photometry, Keplerian radial velocities, and RM effects. WASP-139 b has a residual eccentricity $e=0.103_{-0.041}^{+0.050}$ while HATS-38 b has an eccentricity of $e=0.112_{-0.070}^{+0.072}$, which is compatible with a circular orbit given our data. Using the obliquity constraints, we show that they join a growing group of hot and low-density Neptunes on polar orbits. We use long-term radial velocities to rule out companions with masses $\sim 0.3-50$ $M_J$ within $\sim10$ au. We show that the orbital architectures of the two Neptunes can be explained with high-eccentricity migration from $\gtrsim 2$ au driven by an unseen distant companion. If HATS-38b has no residual eccentricity, its polar and circular orbit can also be consistent with a primordial misalignment. Finally, we performed a hierarchical Bayesian modeling of the true obliquity distribution of Neptunes and found suggestive evidence for a higher preponderance of polar orbits of hot Neptunes compared to Jupiters. However, we note that the exact distribution is sensitive to the choice of priors, highlighting the need for additional obliquity measurements of Neptunes to robustly compare the hot Neptune obliquity distribution to Jupiters., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures. High-eccentricity tidal migration predicts the existence of highly eccentric proto-hot Jupiters on the "tidal circularization track," meaning that they might eventually become hot Jupiters, but that their migratory journey remains incomplete. Having experienced moderate amounts of the tidal reprocessing of their orbital elements, proto-hot Jupiters systems can be powerful test-beds for the underlying mechanisms of eccentricity growth. Notably, they may be used for discriminating between variants of high-eccentricity migration, each predicting a distinct evolution of misalignment between the star and the planet's orbit. We constrain the spin-orbit misalignment of the proto-hot Jupiter TOI-3362b with high-precision radial velocity observations using ESPRESSO at VLT. The observations reveal a sky-projected obliquity $\lambda = 1.2_{-2.7}^{+2.8}$ deg and constrain the orbital eccentricity to $e=0.720 \pm 0.016$, making it one of the most eccentric gas giants for which the obliquity has been measured. The large eccentricity and the striking orbit alignment of the planet suggest that ongoing coplanar high-eccentricity migration driven by a distant companion is a likely explanation for the system's architecture. Warm Jupiters lay out an excellent laboratory for testing models of planet formation and migration. Their separation from the host star makes tidal reprocessing of their orbits ineffective, which preserves the orbital architectures that result from the planet-forming process. Among the measurable properties, the orbital inclination with respect to the stellar rotational axis, stands out as a crucial diagnostic for understanding the migration mechanisms behind the origin of close-in planets. Observational limitations have made the procurement of spin-orbit measurements heavily biased toward hot Jupiter systems. In recent years, however, high-precision spectroscopy has begun to provide obliquity measurements for planets well into the warm Jupiter regime. In this study, we present Rossiter-McLaughlin (RM) measurements of the projected obliquity angle for the warm Jupiter TOI-677 b using ESPRESSO at the VLT. TOI-677 b exhibits an extreme degree of alignment ($\lambda = 0.3 \pm 1.3$ deg), which is particularly puzzling given its significant eccentricity ($e \approx 0.45$). TOI-677 b thus joins a growing class of close-in giants that exhibit large eccentricities and low spin-orbit angles, which is a configuration not predicted by existing models. We also present the detection of a candidate outer brown dwarf companion on an eccentric, wide orbit ($e \approx 0.4$ and $P \approx 13$ yr). Using simple estimates, we show that this companion is unlikely to be the cause of the unusual orbit of TOI-677 b. We report the discovery and orbital characterization of three new transiting warm giant planets. These systems were initially identified as presenting single transit events in the light curves generated from the full frame images of the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). Follow-up radial velocity measurements and additional light curves were used to determine the orbital periods and confirm the planetary nature of the candidates. The planets orbit slightly metal-rich late F- and early G-type stars. We find that TOI 4406b has a mass of $M_P$= 0.30 $\pm$ 0.04 $M_J$ , a radius of $R_P$= 1.00 $\pm$ 0.02 $R_J$ , and a low eccentricity orbit (e=0.15 $\pm$ 0.05) with a period of P= 30.08364 $\pm$ 0.00005 d . TOI 2338b has a mass of $M_P$= 5.98 $\pm$ 0.20 $M_J$ , a radius of $R_P$= 1.00 $\pm$ 0.01 $R_J$ , and a highly eccentric orbit (e= 0.676 $\pm$ 0.002 ) with a period of P= 22.65398 $\pm$ 0.00002 d . Finally, TOI 2589b has a mass of $M_P$= 3.50 $\pm$ 0.10 $M_J$ , a radius of $R_P$= 1.08 $\pm$ 0.03 $R_J$ , and an eccentric orbit (e = 0.522 $\pm$ 0.006 ) with a period of P= 61.6277 $\pm$ 0.0002 d . We review recent works on the dynamics of circumbinary accretion, including time variability, angular momentum transfer between the disk and the binary, and the secular evolution of accreting binaries. These dynamics can impact stellar binary formation/evolution, circumbinary planet formation/migration, and the evolution of (super)massive black-hole binaries. We discuss the dynamics and evolution of inclined/warped circumbinary disks and connect with recent observations of protoplanetary disks. A special kind of circumbinary accretion involves binaries embedded in "big" disks, which may contribute to the mergers of stellar-mass black holes in AGN disks. Highlights include: $\bullet$ Circumbinary accretion is highly variable, being modulated at $P_{\rm b}$ (the binary period) or $\sim 5P_{\rm p}$, depending on the binary eccentricity $e_{\rm b}$ and mass ratio $q_{\rm b}$. $\bullet$ The inner region of the circumbinary disk can develop coherent eccentric structure, which may modulate the accretion and affect the physical processes (e.g. planet migration) taking place in the disk. $\bullet$ Over long timescales, circumbinary accretion steers binaries toward equal masses, and it does not always lead to binary orbital decay, as is commonly assumed. The secular orbital evolution depends on the binary parameters ($e_{\rm b}$ and $q_{\rm b}$), and on the thermodynamic properties of the accreting gas. $\bullet$ A misaligned disk around a low-eccentricity binary tends to evolve toward coplanarity due to viscous dissipation. We apply the theory of nonlinear resonance capture to the problem of a black hole binary (BHB) orbiting a supermassive black hole (SMBH) while embedded in the accretion disk of an active galactic nucleus (AGN). If successful, resonance capture can trigger dramatic growth in the BHB eccentricity, with important consequences for the BHB merger timescale, as well as for the gravitational wave (GW) signature of such an eccentric merger. This resonance capture may occur when the orbital period around the SMBH (the "outer binary") and the apsidal precession of the BHB (the "inner binary") are in a 1:1 commensurability. This effect is analogous to the phenomenon of lunar evection resonance in the early Sun-Earth-Moon system, with the distinction that in the present case, the BHB apsidal precession is due to general relativity, rather than rotationally-induced distortion. In contrast to the case of lunar evection, however, the inner binary undergoes orbital decay driven by GW emission, rather than orbital expansion driven by tidal dissipation. This distinction fundamentally alters the three-body dynamics, forbidding resonance capture, and limiting eccentricity growth. However, if the BHB migrates through of a gaseous AGN disk, the change in the outer binary can counterbalance the suppressing effect of BHB decay, permitting evection resonance capture and the production of eccentric BHB mergers. We compute the likelihood of resonance capture assuming an agnostic distribution of parameters for the three bodies involved and for the properties of the AGN disk. We find that intermediate-mass ratio BHBs (involving an intermediate-mass black hole and a stellar-mass black hole) are the most likely to be captured into evection resonance and thus undergo an eccentric merger. We present a suite of high resolution hydrodynamic simulations of binaries immersed in circumbinary accretion disks (CBDs). For the first time, we investigate the preferential accretion rate as a function of both eccentricity $e_{\rm b}$ and mass ratio $q_{\rm b}$ in a densely sampled parameter space, finding that when compared with circular binaries, mass ratios grow more efficiently in binaries on moderately eccentric orbits ($0.0 \lesssim e_{\rm b} \lesssim 0.4$), and high eccentricities ($e_{\rm b} \gtrsim 0.6 $) suppress mass ratio growth. We suggest that this non-monotonic preferential accretion behaviour may produce an observable shift in the mass ratio distributions of stellar binaries and massive black hole binaries. We further find that the response of a CBD can be divided into three regimes, depending on eccentricity and mass ratio: (i) CBDs around circular binaries always precess freely, whereas CBDs around eccentric binaries either (ii) undergo forced precession or (iii) remain locked at an angle with respect to the binary periapsis. Forced precession in eccentric binaries is associated with strong modulation of individual accretion rates on the precession timescale, a potentially observable signature in accreting binaries with short orbital periods. Disaster victim identification (DVI) entails a protracted process of evidence collection and data matching to reconcile physical remains with victim identity. Technology is critical to DVI by enabling the linkage of physical evidence to information. However, labelling physical remains and collecting data at the scene are dominated by low-technology paper-based practices. We ask, how can technology help us tag and track the victims of disaster? Our response has two parts. First, we conducted a human-computer interaction led investigation into the systematic factors impacting DVI tagging and tracking processes. Through interviews with Australian DVI practitioners, we explored how technologies to improve linkage might fit with prevailing work practices and preferences; practical and social considerations; and existing systems and processes. Using insights from these interviews and relevant literature, we identified four critical themes: protocols and training; stress and stressors; the plurality of information capture and management systems; and practicalities and constraints. Second, we applied the themes identified in the first part of the investigation to critically review technologies that could support DVI practitioners by enhancing DVI processes that link physical evidence to information. This resulted in an overview of candidate technologies matched with consideration of their key attributes. This study recognises the importance of considering human factors that can affect technology adoption into existing practices. We provide a searchable table (Supplementary Information) that relates technologies to the key attributes relevant to DVI practice, for the reader to apply to their own context. While this research directly contributes to DVI, it also has applications to other domains in which a physical/digital linkage is required, particularly within high-stress environments., Comment: 27 pages, 2 figures

Recent simulations show that giant planets of about one Jupiter mass migrate inward at a rate that differs from the Type II prediction. Here we show that at higher masses, planets migrate outward. Our result differs from previous ones because of our longer simulation times, lower viscosity, and our boundary conditions that allow the disk to reach viscous steady state. We show that, for planets on circular orbits, the transition from inward to outward migration coincides with the known transition from circular to eccentric disks that occurs for planets more massive than a few Jupiters. In an eccentric disk, the torque on the outer disk weakens due to two effects: the planet launches weaker waves, and those waves travel further before damping. As a result, the torque on the inner disk dominates, and the planet pushes itself outward. The Jovian-sized object WD~1856~b transits a white dwarf (WD) in a compact $1.4$-day orbit. Unlikely to have endured stellar evolution in its current orbit, WD~1856~b is thought to have migrated from much wider separations. Because the WD is old, and a member of a well-characterized hierarchical multiple, the well-known Kozai mechanism provides an effective migration channel for WD~1856~b. Moreover, the lack of tides in the star allows us to directly connect the current semi-major axis to the pre-migration one, from which we can infer the initial conditions of the system. By further demanding that successful migrators survive all previous phases of stellar evolution, we are able to constrain the mass of WD~1856~b to be $\simeq0.7-3M_{\rm J}$ and its main sequence semi-major axis to be $\simeq 2-2.5$ au. These properties imply that WD~1856~b was born a typical gas giant. We further estimate the occurrence rate of Kozai-migrated planets around WDs to be ${\cal O}(10^{-3}{-}10^{-4})$, suggesting that WD~1856~b is the only one in the {\it TESS} sample, but implying ${\cal O}(10^2)$ future detections by LSST. The recent characterization of transiting close-in planets has revealed an intriguing population of sub-Neptunes with highly tilted and even polar orbits relative to their host star's equator. Any viable theory for the origin of these close-in, polar planets must explain (1) the observed stellar obliquities, (2) the substantial eccentricities, and (3) the existence of Jovian companions with large mutual inclinations. In this work, we propose a theoretical model that satisfies these requirements without invoking tidal dissipation or large primordial inclinations. Instead, tilting is facilitated by the protoplanetary disk dispersal during the late stage of planet formation, initiating a process of resonance sweeping and parametric instability. This mechanism consists of two steps. First, a nodal secular resonance excites the inclination to large values; then, once the inclination reaches a critical value, a linear eccentric instability is triggered, which detunes the resonance and ends inclination growth. The critical inclination is pushed to high values by general relativistic precession, making polar orbits an inherently post-Newtonian outcome. Hydrodynamical simulations show that circumbinary disks become eccentric, even when the binary is circular. Here we demonstrate that, in steady state, the disk's eccentricity behaves as a long-lived free mode trapped by turning points that naturally arise from a continuously truncated density profile. Consequently, both the disk's precession rate and eccentricity profile may be calculated via the simple linear theory for perturbed pressure-supported disks. By formulating and solving the linear theory we find that (i) surprisingly, the precession rate is roughly determined by the binary's quadrupole, even when the quadrupole is very weak relative to pressure; (ii) the eccentricity profile is largest near the inner edge of the disk, and falls exponentially outwards; and (iii) the results from linear theory indeed agree with what is found in simulations. Understanding the development of eccentric modes in circumbinary disks is a crucial first step for understanding the long term (secular) exchange of eccentricity, angular momentum and mass between the binary and the gas. In simulations of viscously evolving accretion disks, the inner boundary condition is particularly important. If treated incorrectly, it induces incorrect behavior very quickly, because the viscous time is shortest near the inner boundary. Recent work has determined the correct inner boundary in Eulerian simulations. But in quasi-Lagrangian simulations (e.g., SPH, moving mesh, and mesh-less), where the inner boundary is modeled by removing mass within a finite zone, the inner density profile typically becomes anomalously depleted. Here we show how the boundary condition should be applied in such codes, via a simple modification of the usual approach: when one removes mass, one must speed up the remaining material so that the disk's angular momentum is unchanged. We show with both 1D and 2D moving-mesh (AREPO) simulations that this scheme works as desired in viscously evolving disks. It produces no spurious density depletions and is independent of the mass removal rate, provided that the disk is adequately resolved and that the mass removal rate is not so extreme as to trigger instabilities. This "torque-free" mass removal technique permits the use of quasi-Lagrangian codes to simulate viscously evolving disks, while including a variety of additional effects. We carry out 2D viscous hydrodynamics simulations of circumbinary disk (CBD) accretion using {\footnotesize AREPO}. We resolve the accretion flow from a large-scale CBD down to the streamers and disks around individual binary components. Extending our recent studies \citep{mun19}, we consider circular binaries with various mass ratios ($0.1\leq q_{\rm{b}}\leq1$) and study accretion from ``infinite'', steady-supply disks and from finite-sized, viscously spreading tori. For ``infinite'' disks, a global steady state can be reached, and the accretion variability has a dominant frequency ${\sim}0.2\Omega_{\rm{b}}$ for $q_{\rm{b}}>0.5$ and $\Omega_{\rm{b}}$ for $q_{\rm{b}}<0.5$, ($\Omega_{\rm{b}}$ is the binary angular frequency). We find that the accretion ``eigenvalue'' $l_0$ -- the net angular momentum transfer from the disk to the binary per unit accreted mass -- is always positive and falls in the range ($0.65$-$0.85)a_{\rm b}^2\Omega_{\rm{b}}$ (with $a_{\rm{b}}$ the binary separation), depending weakly on the mass ratio and viscosity. This leads to binary expansion when $q_{\rm{b}}\gtrsim0.3$. Accretion from a finite torus can be separated into two phases: an initial transient phase, corresponding to the filling of the binary cavity, followed by a viscous pseudo-stationary phase, during which the torus viscously spreads and accretes onto the binary. In the viscous phase, the net torque on the binary per unit accreted mass is close to $l_0$, the value derived for ``infinite'' disks. We conclude that similar-mass binaries accreting from CBDs gain angular momentum and expand over long time scales. This result significantly impacts the coalescence of supermassive binary black holes and newly formed binary stars. We carry out 2D viscous hydrodynamical simulations of circumbinary accretion using the AREPO code. We self-consistently compute the accretion flow over a wide range of spatial scales, from the circumbinary disk (CBD) far from the central binary, through accretion streamers, to the disks around individual binary components, resolving the flow down to 2% of the binary separation. We focus on equal-mass binaries with arbitrary eccentricities. We evolve the flow over long (viscous) timescales until a quasi-steady is reached, in which the mass supply rate at large distances $\dot{M}_0$ (assumed constant) equals the time-averaged mass transfer rate across the disk and the total mass accretion rate onto the binary components. This quasi-steady state allows us to compute the secular angular momentum transfer rate onto the binary, $\langle\dot{J}_b\rangle$, and the resulting orbital evolution. Through direct computation of the gravitational and accretion torques on the binary, we find that $\langle\dot{J}_b\rangle$ is consistently positive (i.e., the binary gains angular momentum), with $l_0\equiv\langle\dot{J}_b\rangle/\dot M_0$ in the range of $(0.4-0.8)a_b^2\Omega_b$, depending on the binary eccentricity (where $a_b,~\Omega_b$ are the binary semi-major axis and angular frequency); we also find that this $\langle\dot{J}_b\rangle$ is equal to the net angular momentum current across the CBD, indicating that global angular momentum balance is achieved in our simulations. We compute the time-averaged rate of change of the binary orbital energy for eccentric binaries, and thus obtain the secular rates $\langle\dot a_b\rangle$ and $\langle \dot{e}_b\rangle$. In all cases, $\langle\dot{a}_b\rangle$ is positive, i.e., the binary expands while accreting. Important clues on the formation and evolution of planetary systems can be inferred from the stellar obliquity $\psi$. We study the distribution of obliquities using the California-Kepler Survey and the TEPCat Catalog of Rossiter-MacLaughlin (RM) measurements, from which we extract, respectively, 275 and 118 targets. We infer a "best fit" obliquity distribution in $\psi$ with a single parameter $\kappa$. Large values of $\kappa$ imply that $\psi$ is distributed narrowly around zero, while small values imply approximate isotropy. Our findings are: (1) The distribution of $\psi$ in Kepler systems is narrower than found by previous studies and consistent with $\kappa\sim15$ (mean $\langle\psi\rangle\sim19^\circ$ and spread $\psi\sim10^\circ$). (2) The value of $\kappa$ in Kepler systems does not depend, at a statistically significant level, on planet multiplicity, stellar multiplicity or stellar age; on the other hand, metal-rich hosts, small planet hosts and long-period planet hosts tend to be more oblique than the general sample (at a $\sim$2.5-$\sigma$ significance level). (3) Hot Jupiter (HJ) systems with RM measurements are consistent with $\kappa\sim2$, more broadly distributed than the general Kepler population. (4) A separation of the RM sample into cooler ($T_{\rm eff}\lesssim$6250 K) and hotter ($T_{\rm eff}\gtrsim$6250 K) HJ hosts results in two distinct distributions, $\kappa_{\rm cooler}\sim4$ and $\kappa_{\rm hotter}\sim1$ (4-$\sigma$ significance), both more oblique than the Kepler sample. We hypothesize that the total mass in planets may be behind the increasing obliquity with metallicity and planet radius, and that the period dependence could be due to primordial disk alignment rather than realignment of stellar spin., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures, accepted to AJ

We carry out numerical simulations of circumbinary discs, solving the viscous hydrodynamics equations on a polar grid covering an extended disc outside the binary co-orbital region. We use carefully controlled outer boundary conditions and long-term integrations to ensure that the disc reaches a quasi-steady state, in which the time-averaged mass accretion rate onto the binary, $\langle\dot{M}\rangle$, matches the mass supply rate at the outer disc. We focus on binaries with comparable masses and a wide range of eccentricities ($e_\mathrm{B}$). For $e_\mathrm{B} \lesssim 0.05$, the mass accretion rate of the binary is modulated at about $5$ times the binary period; otherwise it is modulated at the binary period. The inner part of the circumbinary disc ($r \lesssim 6 a_\mathrm{B}$) generally becomes coherently eccentric. For low and high $e_\mathrm{B}$, the disc line of apsides precesses around the binary, but for intermediate $e_\mathrm{B}$ ($0.2 - 0.4$), it instead becomes locked with that of the binary. By considering the balance of angular momentum transport through the disc by advection, viscous stress, and gravitational torque, we determine the time-averaged net angular momentum transfer rate to the binary, $\langle\dot{J}\rangle$. The specific angular momentum, $l_0 = \langle\dot{J}\rangle/\langle\dot{M}\rangle$, depends non-monotonically on $e_\mathrm{B}$. Contrary to previous claims, we find that $l_0$ is positive for most $e_\mathrm{B}$, implying that the binary receives net angular momentum, which may cause its separation to grow with time. The minimum $l_0$ occurs at intermediate $e_\mathrm{B}$ ($0.2 - 0.4$), corresponding to the regime where the inner eccentric disc is apsidally aligned with the binary., Comment: 24 pages, 20 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The presence of a planetary system can shield a planetesimal disk from the secular gravitational perturbations due to distant outer massive objects (planets or stellar companions). As the host star evolves off the main sequence to become a white dwarf, these planets can be engulfed, triggering secular instabilities and leading to the tidal disruptions of small rocky bodies. These disrupted bodies can feed the white dwarfs with rocky material and possibly explain the high-metallicity material in their atmospheres. We illustrate how this mechanism can operate when the gravitational perturbations are due to the Kozai-Lidov mechanism from a stellar binary companion. We show that this mechanism can explain the observed levels of accretion if: (1) the planetary engulfment happens fast compared to the secular timescale, which is generally the case for wide binaries ($>100$ AU) and planetary engulfment during the Asymptotic Giant Branch; (2) the planetesimal disk has a total mass of $\sim10^{-4}-10^{-2}M_\oplus$. We show that this new mechanism can provide a steady supply of material throughout the entire life of the white dwarfs for all cooling ages and can account for a large fraction (up to nearly half) of the observed polluted WDs., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures. We present numerical simulations of circumbinary accretion onto eccentric and circular binaries using the moving-mesh code AREPO. This is the first set of simulations to tackle the problem of binary accretion using a finite-volume scheme on a freely moving mesh, which allows for accurate measurements of accretion onto individual stars for arbitrary binary eccentricity. While accretion onto a circular binary shows bursts with period of ~5 times the binary period P_b,accretion onto an eccentric binary is predominantly modulated at the period ~1P_b. For an equal-mass circular binary, the accretion rates onto individual stars are quite similar to each other, following the same variable pattern in time. By contrast, for eccentric binaries, one of the stars can accrete at a rate 10-20 times larger than its companion. This "symmetry breaking" between the stars, however, alternates over timescales of order 200 P_b, and can be attributed to a slowly precessing, eccentric circumbinary disk. Over longer timescales, the net accretion rates onto individual stars are the same, reaching a quasi-steady state with the circumbinary disk. Lidov-Kozai oscillations of planets in stellar binaries, combined with tidal dissipation, can lead to the formation of hot Jupiters (HJs) or tidal disruption of planets. Recent population synthesis studies have found that the fraction of systems resulting in HJs (F_HJ) depends strongly on the planet mass, host stellar type and tidal dissipation strength, while the total migration fraction F_mig = F_ HJ + F_dis (including both HJ formation and tidal disruption) exhibits much weaker dependence. We present an analytical method for calculating F_HJ and F_mig in the Lidov-Kozai migration scenario. The key ingredient of our method is to determine the critical initial planet-binary inclination angle that drives the planet to reach sufficiently large eccentricity for efficient tidal dissipation or disruption. This calculation includes the effects of the octupole potential and short-range forces on the planet. Our analytical method reproduces the resulting planet migration/disruption fractions from population synthesis, and can be easily implemented for various planet, stellar/companion types, and for different distributions of initial planetary semi-major axes, binary separations and eccentricities. We extend our calculations to planets in the super-Earth mass range and discuss the conditions for such planets to survive Lidov-Kozai migration and form close-in rocky planets., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures. The discovery of transiting circumbinary planets by the Kepler mission suggests that planets can form efficiently around binary stars. None of the stellar binaries currently known to host planets has a period shorter than 7 days, despite the large number of eclipsing binaries found in the Kepler target list with periods shorter than a few days. These compact binaries are believed to have evolved from wider orbits into their current configurations via the so-called Lidov-Kozai migration mechanism, in which gravitational perturbations from a distant tertiary companion induce large-amplitude eccentricity oscillations in the binary, followed by orbital decay and circularization due to tidal dissipation in the stars. Here we explore the orbital evolution of planets around binaries undergoing orbital decay by this mechanism. We show that planets may survive and become misaligned from their host binary, or may develop erratic behavior in eccentricity, resulting in their consumption by the stars or ejection from the system as the binary decays. Accurate numerical solutions of the equations of hydrodynamics play an ever more important role in many fields of astrophysics. In this work, we reinvestigate the accuracy of the moving-mesh code \textsc{Arepo} and show how its convergence order can be improved for general problems. In particular, we clarify that for certain problems \textsc{Arepo} only reaches first-order convergence for its original formulation. This can be rectified by simple modifications we propose to the time integration scheme and the spatial gradient estimates of the code, both improving the accuracy of the code. We demonstrate that the new implementation is indeed second-order accurate under the $L^1$ norm, and in particular substantially improves conservation of angular momentum. Interestingly, whereas these improvements can significantly change the results of smooth test problems, we also find that cosmological simulations of galaxy formation are unaffected, demonstrating that the numerical errors eliminated by the new formulation do not impact these simulations. In contrast, simulations of binary stars followed over a large number of orbital times are strongly affected, as here it is particularly crucial to avoid a long-term build up of errors in angular momentum conservation., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication

The formation and early evolution of circumstellar discs often occurs within dense, newborn stellar clusters. For the first time, we apply the moving-mesh code AREPO, to circumstellar discs in 3-D, focusing on disc-disc interactions that result from stellar fly-bys. Although a small fraction of stars are expected to undergo close approaches, the outcomes of the most violent encounters might leave an imprint on the discs and host stars that will influence both their orbits and their ability to form planets. We first construct well-behaved 3-D models of self-gravitating discs, and then create a suite of numerical experiments of parabolic encounters, exploring the effects of pericenter separation r_p, disc orientation and disc-star mass ratio (M_d/M_*) on the orbital evolution of the host stars. Close encounters (2r_p<~ disc radius) can truncate discs on very short time scales. If discs are massive, close encounters facilitate enough orbital angular momentum extraction to induce stellar capture. We find that for realistic primordial disc masses M_d<~0.1M_*, non-colliding encounters induce minor orbital changes, which is consistent with analytic calculations of encounters in the linear regime. The same disc masses produce entirely different results for grazing/colliding encounters. In the latter case, rapidly cooling discs lose orbital energy by radiating away the energy excess of the shock-heated gas, thus causing capture of the host stars into a bound orbit. The Lidov-Kozai (LK) mechanism plays an important role in the secular evolution of many hierarchical triple systems. The standard LK mechanism consists of large-amplitude oscillations in eccentricity and inclination of a binary subject to the quadrupole potential from an outer perturber. Recent work has shown that when the octupole terms are included in the potential, the inner binary can reach more extreme eccentricities as well as undergo orientation flips. It is known that pericenter precessions due to short-range effects, such as General Relativity and tidal and rotational distortions, can limit the growth of eccentricity and even suppress standard (quadrupolar) LK oscillations, but their effect on the octupole-level LK mechanism has not been fully explored. In this paper, we systematically study how these short-range forces affect the extreme orbital behaviour found in octupole LK cycles. In general, the influence of the octupole potential is confined to a range of initial mutual inclinations Itot centered around 90deg (when the inner binary mass ratio is <<1), with this range expanding with increasing octupole strength. We find that, while the short-range forces do not change the width and location of this "window of influence", they impose a strict upper limit on the maximum achievable eccentricity. This limiting eccentricity can be calculated analytically, and its value holds even for strong octupole potential and for the general case of three comparable masses. General-purpose, moving-mesh schemes for hydrodynamics have opened the possibility of combining the accuracy of grid-based numerical methods with the flexibility and automatic resolution adaptivity of particle-based methods. Due to their supersonic nature, Keplerian accretion discs are in principle a very attractive system for applying such freely moving mesh techniques. However, the high degree of symmetry of simple accretion disc models can be difficult to capture accurately by these methods, due to the generation of geometric grid noise and associated numerical diffusion, which is absent in polar grids. To explore these and other issues, in this work we study the idealized problem of two-dimensional planet-disc interaction with the moving-mesh code AREPO. We explore the hydrodynamic evolution of discs with planets through a series of numerical experiments that vary the planet mass, the disc viscosity and the mesh resolution, and compare the resulting surface density, vortensity field and tidal torque with results from the literature. We find that the performance of the moving-mesh code in this problem is in accordance with published results, showing good consistency with grid codes written in polar coordinates. We also conclude that grid noise and mesh distortions do not introduce excessive numerical diffusion. Finally, we show how the moving-mesh approach can naturally increase resolution in regions of high densityaround planets and planetary wakes, while retaining the background flow at low resolution. In this study, we present high-resolution millimeter observations of the dust and gas disk of the T Tauri star AS 205 N and its companion, AS 205 S, obtained with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array. The gas disk around AS 205 N, for which infrared emission spectroscopy demonstrates significant deviations from Keplerian motion that has been interpreted as evidence for a disk wind (Pontoppidan et al. 2011; Bast et al. 2011), also displays significant deviations from Keplerian disk emission in the observations presented here. Detections near both AS 205 N and S are obtained in 1.3 mm continuum, 12CO 2-1, 13CO 2-1 and C18O 2-1. The 12CO emission is extended up to 2 arcsec from AS 205N, and both 12CO and 13CO display deviations from Keplerian rotation at all angular scales. Two possible explanations for these observations hold up best to close scrutiny - tidal interaction with AS 205 S or disk winds (or a combination of the two), and we discuss these possibilities in some detail., Comment: accepted by The Astrophysical Journal
