Abstract

The stability of a dark matter detector on the timescale of a few years is a key requirement due to the large exposure needed to achieve a competitive sensitivity. It is especially crucial to enable the detector to potentially detect any annual event rate modulation, an expected dark matter signature. In this work, we present the performance history of the DarkSide-50 dual-phase argon time projection chamber over its almost three-year low-radioactivity argon run. In particular, we focus on the electroluminescence signal that enables sensitivity to sub-keV energy depositions. The stability of the electroluminescence yield is found to be better than 0.5%. Finally, we show the temporal evolution of the observed event rate around the sub-keV region being consistent to the background prediction., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

The BeEST experiment is a precision laboratory search for physics beyond the standard model that measures the electron capture decay of $^7$Be implanted into superconducting tunnel junction (STJ) detectors. For Phase-III of the experiment, we constructed a continuously sampling data acquisition system to extract pulse shape and timing information from 16 STJ pixels offline. Four additional pixels are read out with a fast list-mode digitizer, and one with a nuclear MCA already used in the earlier limit-setting phases of the experiment. Abstract

Dark matter induced event rate in an Earth-based detector is predicted to show an annual modulation as a result of the Earth's orbital motion around the Sun. We searched for this modulation signature using the ionization signal of the DarkSide-50 liquid argon time projection chamber. Abstract

We present a novel approach for the search of dark matter in the DarkSide-50 experiment, relying on Bayesian Networks. This method incorporates the detector response model into the likelihood function, explicitly maintaining the connection with the quantity of interest. No assumptions about the linearity of the problem or the shape of the probability distribution functions are required, and there is no need to morph signal and background spectra as a function of nuisance parameters. By expressing the problem in terms of Bayesian Networks, we have developed an inference algorithm based on a Markov Chain Monte Carlo to calculate the posterior probability. A clever description of the detector response model in terms of parametric matrices allows us to study the impact of systematic variations of any parameter on the final results. Our approach not only provides the desired information on the parameter of interest, but also potential constraints on the response model. Our results are consistent with recent published analyses and further refine the parameters of the detector response model., Comment: 24 pages, 12 figures, 1 table

Abstract

Mainly because of its long half-life and despite its scientific relevance, spectroscopic measurements of $^{176}$Lu forbidden $\beta$-decays are very limited and lack formulation of shape factors. A direct precise measurement of its $Q$ value is also presently unreported. In addition, the description of forbidden decays provides interesting challenges for nuclear theory. The comparison of precise experimental results with theoretical calculations for these decays can help to test underlying models and can aid the interpretation of data from other experiments.

Abstract

Dark matter elastic scattering off nuclei can result in the excitation and ionization of the recoiling atom through the so-called Migdal effect. The energy deposition from the ionization electron adds to the energy deposited by the recoiling nuclear system and allows for the detection of interactions of sub-GeV/c$^2$ mass dark matter. We present new constraints for sub-GeV/c$^2$ dark matter using the dual-phase liquid argon time projection chamber of the DarkSide-50 experiment with an exposure of (12306 $\pm$ 184) kg d. The analysis is based on the ionization signal alone and significantly enhances the sensitivity of DarkSide-50, enabling sensitivity to dark matter with masses down to 40 MeV/c$^2$. Furthermore, it sets the most stringent upper limit on the spin independent dark matter nucleon cross section for masses below $3.6$ GeV/c$^2$., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

We present a search for dark matter particles with sub-GeV/$c^2$ masses whose interactions have final state electrons using the DarkSide-50 experiment's (12306 $\pm$ 184) kg d low-radioactivity liquid argon exposure. By analyzing the ionization signals, we exclude new parameter space for the dark matter-electron cross section $\bar{\sigma}_e$, the axioelectric coupling constant $g_{Ae}$, and the dark photon kinetic mixing parameter $\kappa$. We also set the first dark matter direct-detection constraints on the mixing angle $\left|U_{e4}\right|^2$ for keV sterile neutrinos., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

We report on the search for dark matter WIMPs in the mass range below 10 GeV/c$^2$, from the analysis of the entire dataset acquired with a low-radioactivity argon target by the DarkSide-50 experiment at LNGS. The new analysis benefits from more accurate calibration of the detector response, improved background model, and better determination of systematic uncertainties, allowing us to accurately model the background rate and spectra down to 0.06 keV$_{er}$. A 90% C.L. exclusion limit for the spin-independent cross section of 3 GeV/c$^2$ mass WIMP on nucleons is set at 6$\times$10$^{-43}$ cm$^2$, about a factor 10 better than the previous DarkSide-50 limit. This analysis extends the exclusion region for spin-independent dark matter interactions below the current experimental constraints in the $[1.2, 3.6]$ GeV/c$^2$ WIMP mass range., Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures

The half-life of $^{6}$He has been measured using a low energy radioactive beam implanted in a YAP scintillator and recording decay events in a 4$\pi$ geometry. Events were time-stamped with a digital data acquisition system enabling a reliable control of dead-time effects and detector gain variations. The result, $T_{1/2} = (807.25 \pm 0.16_{\rm stat} \pm 0.11_{\rm sys}$)~ms, provides the most precise value obtained so far and is consistent with the only previous measurement having a precision smaller than 0.1%. Abstract

We investigate the possible origins of the norm and shape reactor antineutrino anomalies in the framework of a summation model (SM) where $\beta^{-}$ transitions are simulated by a phenomenological Gamow-Teller $\beta$-decay strength model. The general trends of the discrepancies to the Huber-Mueller model on the antineutrino side can be reproduced both in norm and shape. From the exact electron-antineutrino correspondence of the SM model, we predict similar distortions in the electron spectra, suggesting that biases on the reference fission-electron spectra could be at the origin of the anomalies.

Abstract

Ongoing experimental efforts to measure with unprecedented precision electron-capture probabilities challenges the current theoretical models. The short range of the weak interaction necessitates an accurate description of the atomic structure down to the nucleus region. A recent electron-capture modeling has been modified in order to test the influence of three different atomic descriptions on the decay and shaking probabilities. To this end, a specific atomic modeling was developed in the framework of the relativistic density-functional theory, exploring several exchange-correlation functionals and self-interaction-corrected models. It was found that the probabilities of total shaking, tested on both photoionization and electron-capture processes, depend strongly on the accuracy of the atomic modeling. Predictions of capture probabilities have been compared with experimental values evaluated from available published data for different radionuclides from $^{7}$Be to $^{138}$La. New high-precision measurements are strongly encouraged because the accuracy of the current experimental values is insufficient to test the models beyond the inner shells., Comment: 36 pages, 7 figures and 3 tables

Abstract

DarkSide-50 has demonstrated the high potential of dual-phase liquid argon time projection chambers in exploring interactions of WIMPs in the GeV/c$^2$ mass range. The technique, based on the detection of the ionization signal amplified via electroluminescence in the gas phase, allows to explore recoil energies down to the sub-keV range. We report here on the DarkSide-50 measurement of the ionization yield of electronic recoils down to $\sim$180~eV$_{er}$, exploiting $^{37}$Ar and $^{39}$Ar decays, and extrapolated to a few ionization electrons with the Thomas-Imel box model. Moreover, we present a model-dependent determination of the ionization response to nuclear recoils down to $\sim$500~eV$_{nr}$, the lowest ever achieved in liquid argon, using \textit{in situ} neutron calibration sources and external datasets from neutron beam experiments., Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures, 1 table

Abstract

Sterile neutrinos are natural extensions to the standard model of particle physics and provide a possible portal to the dark sector. We report a new search for the existence of sub-MeV sterile neutrinos using the decay-momentum reconstruction technique in the decay of $^7$Be. The experiment measures the total energy of the $^7$Li daughter atom from the electron capture decay of $^7$Be implanted into sensitive superconducting tunnel junction (STJ) quantum sensors. This first experiment presents data from a single STJ operated at a low count rate for a net total of 28 days, and provides exclusion limits on sterile neutrinos in the mass range from 100 to 850 keV that improve upon previous work by up to an order of magnitude., Comment: 7 pages. 3 figures. Abstract

We report results from searches for new physics with low-energy electronic recoil data recorded with the XENON1T detector. With an exposure of 0.65 t-y and an unprecedentedly low background rate of $76\pm2$ events/(t y keV) between 1 and 30 keV, the data enables sensitive searches for solar axions, an enhanced neutrino magnetic moment, and bosonic dark matter. An excess over known backgrounds is observed at low energies and most prominent between 2 and 3 keV. The solar axion model has a 3.4$\sigma$ significance, and a 3D 90% confidence surface is reported for axion couplings to electrons, photons, and nucleons. This surface is inscribed in the cuboid defined by $g_{ae}<3.8 \times 10^{-12}$, $g_{ae}g_{an}^{eff}<4.8\times 10^{-18}$, and $g_{ae}g_{a\gamma}<7.7\times10^{-22} GeV^{-1}$, and excludes either $g_{ae}=0$ or $g_{ae}g_{a\gamma}=g_{ae}g_{an}^{eff}=0$. The neutrino magnetic moment signal is similarly favored over background at 3.2$\sigma$ and a confidence interval of $\mu_{\nu} \in (1.4,2.9)\times10^{-11}\mu_B$ (90% C.L.) is reported. Both results are in strong tension with stellar constraints. The excess can also be explained by $\beta$ decays of tritium at 3.2$\sigma$ with a trace amount that can neither be confirmed nor excluded with current knowledge of its production and reduction mechanisms. The significances of the solar axion and neutrino magnetic moment hypotheses are reduced to 2.0$\sigma$ and 0.9$\sigma$, respectively, if an unconstrained tritium component is included in the fitting. With respect to bosonic dark matter, the excess favors a monoenergetic peak at ($2.3\pm0.2$) keV (68% C.L.) with a 3.0$\sigma$ global (4.0$\sigma$ local) significance. We also consider the possibility that $^{37}$Ar may be present in the detector and yield a 2.82 keV peak. Abstract

We report a high-statistics measurement of the $L/K$ orbital electron capture (EC) ratio in $^7$Be embedded in cryogenic Ta. The thin Ta film formed part of a high-resolution superconducting tunnel junction (STJ) radiation detector that was used to identify the signals from different decay channels. The measured $L/K$ capture ratio of 0.070(7) is significantly larger than the only previous measurement of this quantity and the theoretical predictions that include in-medium effects. This value is a uniquely sensitive probe of the 1s and 2s orbital overlaps with the nucleus, and is of relevance to nuclear and atomic physics, as well as Li production in novae and other astrophysical scenarios. This is the first experiment that uses STJs for nuclear-recoil detection, opening a new experimental avenue for low-energy precision measurements with rare isotopes., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

16. Improved calculations of β decay backgrounds to new physics in liquid xenon detectors

Abstract

We present high-precision theoretical predictions for the electron energy spectra for the ground-state to ground-state β decays of Pb214, Pb212, and Kr85 most relevant to the background of liquid xenon dark matter detectors. The effects of nuclear structure on the spectral shapes are taken into account using large-scale shell-model calculations. Final spectra also include atomic screening and exchange effects. The impact of nuclear structure effects on the Pb214 and Pb212 spectra below ≈100 keV, pertinent for several searches for new physics, are found to be comparatively larger than those from the atomic effects alone. We find that the full calculation for Pb214 (Pb212) predicts 15.0%-23.2% (12.1%-19.0%) less event rate in a 1-15 keV energy region of interest compared to the spectrum calculated as an allowed transition when using values of the weak axial vector coupling in the range gA=0.7-1.0. The discrepancy highlights the importance of both a proper theoretical treatment and the need for direct measurements of these spectra for a thorough understanding of β decay backgrounds in future experiments.

Abstract

Background: The understanding and description of forbidden decays provides interesting challenges for nuclear theory. These calculations could help to test underlying nuclear models and interpret experimental data. Purpose: Compare a direct measurement of the $^{138}$La $\beta$-decay $Q$ value with the $\beta$-decay spectrum end-point energy measured by Quarati et al. using LaBr$_3$ detectors [Appl. Radiat. Isot. 108, 30 (2016)]. Use new precise measurements of the $^{138}$La $\beta$-decay and electron capture (EC) $Q$ values to improve theoretical calculations of the $\beta$-decay spectrum and EC probabilities. Method: High-precision Penning trap mass spectrometry was used to measure cyclotron frequency ratios of $^{138}$La, $^{138}$Ce and $^{138}$Ba ions from which $\beta$-decay and EC $Q$ values for $^{138}$La were obtained. Results: The $^{138}$La $\beta$-decay and EC $Q$ values were measured to be $Q$ = 1052.42(41) keV and $Q_{EC}$ = 1748.41(34) keV, improving the precision compared to the values obtained in the most recent atomic mass evaluation [Wang, et al., Chin. Phys. C 41, 030003 (2017)] by an order of magnitude. These results are used for improved calculations of the $^{138}$La $\beta$-decay shape factor and EC probabilities. New determinations for the $^{138}$Ce 2EC $Q$ value and the atomic masses of $^{138}$La, $^{138}$Ce, and $^{138}$Ba are also reported. Conclusion: The $^{138}$La $\beta$-decay $Q$ value measured by Quarati et al. is in excellent agreement with our new result, which is an order of magnitude more precise. Uncertainties in the shape factor calculations for $^{138}$La beta-decay using our new $Q$ value are reduced by an order of magnitude. Abstract

We consider the energy spectrum of emitted electrons in $\beta$-decay. Exact Coulomb Dirac wave functions describing the $\beta$-electron in the Coulomb field of the daughter nucleus are used. Further, the improved wave functions which include the screening of the Coulomb field due to the atomic electron cloud are also used. Thus, the interaction between the $\beta$-electron and the field due to the daughter atom is treated within a nonperturbative approach. Are shown the modifications due to the screening on the $\beta$ spectra and shown that those effects are very important. In addition, are addressed the contributions to the $\beta$ spectra due to the exchange terms and shown that the corresponding effects can be substantial. Higher orders arising from the multipole expansion are considered. Abstract

The 8He(d,p) reaction was studied in inverse kinematics at 15.4A MeV using the MUST2 Si-CsI array in order to shed light on the level structure of 9He. The well known 16O(d,p)17O reaction, performed here in reverse kinematics, was used as a test to validate the experimental methods. The 9He missing mass spectrum was deduced from the kinetic energies and emission angles of the recoiling protons. Several structures were observed above the neutron-emission threshold and the angular distributions were used to deduce the multipolarity of the transitions. Abstract

The spectroscopy of 21O has been investigated using a radioactive 20O beam and the (d,p) reaction in inverse kinematics. The ground and first excited states have been determined to be Jpi=5/2+ and Jpi=1/2+ respectively. Two neutron unbound states were observed at excitation energies of 4.76 +- 0.10 and 6.16 +- 0.11. The spectroscopic factor deduced for the lower of these interpreted as a 3/2+ level, reveals a rather pure 0d3/2 single-particle configuration. The large energy difference between the 3/2+ and 1/2+ states is indicative of the emergence of the N=16 magic number. For the higher lying resonance, which has a character consistent with a spin-parity assignment of 3/2+ or 7/2-, a 71% branching ratio to the first 2+ state in 20O has been observed. Abstract

Dark matter elastic scattering off nuclei can result in the excitation and ionization of the recoiling atom through the so-called Migdal effect. The energy deposition from the ionization electron adds to the energy deposited by the recoiling nuclear system and allows for the detection of interactions of sub-GeV/c2 mass dark matter. We present new constraints for sub-GeV/c2 dark matter using the dual-phase liquid argon time projection chamber of the DarkSide-50 experiment with an exposure of (12 306±184) kg d. The analysis is based on the ionization signal alone and significantly enhances the sensitivity of DarkSide-50, enabling sensitivity to dark matter with masses down to 40 MeV/c2. Furthermore, it sets the most stringent upper limit on the spin independent dark matter nucleon cross section for masses below 3.6 GeV/c2.

Abstract

Dark matter induced event rate in an Earth-based detector is predicted to show an annual modulation as a result of the Earth's orbital motion around the Sun. We searched for this modulation signature using the ionization signal of the DarkSide-50 liquid argon time projection chamber. No significant signature compatible with dark matter is observed in the electron recoil equivalent energy range above $40~{\rm eV_{ee}}$, the lowest threshold ever achieved in such a search., 8 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

We report on the search for dark matter WIMPs in the mass range below 10 GeV/c$^2$, from the analysis of the entire dataset acquired with a low-radioactivity argon target by the DarkSide-50 experiment at LNGS. The new analysis benefits from more accurate calibration of the detector response, improved background model, and better determination of systematic uncertainties, allowing us to accurately model the background rate and spectra down to 0.06 keV$_{er}$. A 90% C.L. exclusion limit for the spin-independent cross section of 3 GeV/c$^2$ mass WIMP on nucleons is set at 6$\times$10$^{-43}$ cm$^2$, about a factor 10 better than the previous DarkSide-50 limit. This analysis extends the exclusion region for spin-independent dark matter interactions below the current experimental constraints in the $[1.2, 3.6]$ GeV/c$^2$ WIMP mass range., 11 pages, 12 figures

Abstract

International audience; Background: Mainly because of its long half-life and despite its scientific relevance, spectroscopic measurements of 176Lu beta decays are very limited and lack formulation of shape factors. Direct measurement of its Q-value is also presently unreported. In addition, the description of forbidden decays provides interesting challenges for nuclear theory. The comparison of precise experimental results with theoretical calculations for these decays can help to test underlying models and can aid the interpretation of data from other experiments.Purpose: Perform the first precision measurement of 176Lu beta-decay spectrum and attempt the observation of its electron capture decays, as well as perform the first precision direct measurement of the 176Lu beta-decay Q-value. Compare the shape of the precisely determined experimental beta-spectrum to theoretical calculations, and compare the end-point energy to that obtained from an independent Q-value measurement.Method: The 176Lu beta-decay spectra and the search for electron capture decays were measured with an experimental set-up that employed lutetium-based scintillator crystals and an NaI(Tl) spectrometer for coincidence counting. The beta-decay Q-value was determined via high-precision Penning trap mass spectrometry (PTMS) with the LEBIT facility at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory. The beta-spectrum calculations were performed within the Fermi theory formalism with nuclear structure effects calculated using a shell model approach.Results: Both beta transitions of 176Lu were experimentally observed and corresponding shape factors formulated in their entire energy ranges. Search for electron captures decay branches led to an experimental upper limit of 6.3x10-6 compared to its beta decays. The 176Lu beta-decay and electron capture Q-values were measured using PTMS to be 1193.0(6) keV and 108.9(8) keV, respectively. This enabled precise beta end-point energies of 596.2(6) keV and 195.3(6) keV for the primary and secondary beta-decays, respectively, to be determined. The conserved vector current hypothesis was applied to calculate the relativistic vector matrix elements. The beta-spectrum shape was shown to significantly depend on the Coulomb displacement energy and on the value of the axial vector coupling constant gA, which was extracted according to different assumptions.

Abstract

We investigate the possible origins of the reactor antineutrino anomalies in norm and shape within the framework of a summation model where β− transitions are simulated by a phenomenological model of Gamow-Teller decay strength. The general trends of divergence from the Huber-Mueller model on the antineutrino side can be reproduced in both norm and shape. From the exact electron-antineutrino correspondence of the summation model, we predict similar distortions in the electron spectra, suggesting that biases on the reference spectra of fission electrons could be the cause of the anomalies.

Abstract

Nuclear reactors are uniquely powerful, abundant, and flavor-pure sources of antineutrinos that continue to play a vital role in the US neutrino physics program. The US reactor antineutrino physics community is a diverse interest group encompassing many detection technologies and many particle physics topics, including Standard Model and short-baseline oscillations, BSM physics searches, and reactor flux and spectrum modeling. The community's aims offer strong complimentary with numerous aspects of the wider US neutrino program and have direct relevance to most of the topical sub-groups composing the Snowmass 2021 Neutrino Frontier. Reactor neutrino experiments also have a direct societal impact and have become a strong workforce and technology development pipeline for DOE National Laboratories and universities. This white paper, prepared as a submission to the Snowmass 2021 community organizing exercise, will survey the state of the reactor antineutrino physics field and summarize the ways in which current and future reactor antineutrino experiments can play a critical role in advancing the field of particle physics in the next decade., Contribution to Snowmass 2021

Abstract

DarkSide-50 has demonstrated the high potential of dual-phase liquid argon time projection chambers in exploring interactions of WIMPs in the GeV/c2 mass range. The technique, based on the detection of the ionization signal amplified via electroluminescence in the gas phase, allows us to explore recoil energies down to the sub-keV range. We report here on the DarkSide-50 measurement of the ionization yield of electronic recoils down to ∼180 eVer, exploiting Ar37 and Ar39 decays, and extrapolated to a few ionization electrons with the Thomas-Imel box model. Abstract

We investigate the possible origins of the reactor antineutrino anomalies in the framework of a summation model (SM) where missing $\beta$ transitions are simulated by a phenomenological Gamow-Teller $\beta$-decay strength model. We show that the general trends of the discrepancies between the measured antineutrinos energy spectra and the Huber-Mueller model can be reproduced both in norm and shape. Using the exact electron-antineutrino correspondence of the SM model, we predict similar distortions in the fission-electron spectra, suggesting a norm bias for the $^{235}$U ILL electron spectrum as being at the origin of the "Reactor Antineutrino Anomaly" and a shape bias in the measured electron spectra of $^{235}$U and Pu isotopes as being at the origin of the "5 MeV bump".

Abstract

Ongoing experimental efforts to measure with unprecedented precision electron capture probabilities will challenge the current theoretical models. The short range of the weak interaction necessitates an accurate description of the atomic structure down to the nucleus region. In this study, an atomic modeling has been developed in the framework of the relativistic density functional theory within which several exchange-correlation functionals and self-interaction-corrected models have been explored. A recent electron capture model has been modified in order to only test the influence of the atomic modeling on the calculated decay probabilities. In particular, two important possibilities have been tested, the "no vacancy" and the "frozen orbital" approximations. Results have been compared to experimental values evaluated from available published data. New high-precision measurements are strongly encouraged as the accuracy of the current experimental values does not allow to draw a firm conclusion on the theoretical modeling to be employed., Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures and 3 tables

Abstract

International audience; Spectral unmixing was investigated for fast spectroscopic identification in γ-emitter mixtures at low-statistics in the case of measurements performed to prevent illegal nuclear material trafficking or for in situ environmental analysis following a radiological or nuclear accident. For that purpose, a multiplicative update algorithm based on full-spectrum analysis was tested in the case of a 3″x3″ NaI(Tl) detector. Automatic decision-making was addressed using Monte Carlo calculations of decision thresholds and detection limits. The first results obtained with a portable instrument equipped with a 3″x3″ NaI(Tl) detector designed for the control of food samples by non-expert users following a radiological or nuclear accident, are also presented.

Abstract

Background: The understanding and description of forbidden decays provides interesting challenges for nuclear theory. These calculations could help to test underlying nuclear models and interpret experimental data. Purpose: Compare a direct measurement of the $^{138}$La $\beta$-decay $Q$ value with the $\beta$-decay spectrum end-point energy measured by Quarati et al. using LaBr$_3$ detectors [Appl. Radiat. Isot. 108, 30 (2016)]. Use new precise measurements of the $^{138}$La $\beta$-decay and electron capture (EC) $Q$ values to improve theoretical calculations of the $\beta$-decay spectrum and EC probabilities. Method: High-precision Penning trap mass spectrometry was used to measure cyclotron frequency ratios of $^{138}$La, $^{138}$Ce and $^{138}$Ba ions from which $\beta$-decay and EC $Q$ values for $^{138}$La were obtained. Results: The $^{138}$La $\beta$-decay and EC $Q$ values were measured to be $Q$ = 1052.42(41) keV and $Q_{EC}$ = 1748.41(34) keV, improving the precision compared to the values obtained in the most recent atomic mass evaluation [Wang, et al., Chin. Phys. C 41, 030003 (2017)] by an order of magnitude. These results are used for improved calculations of the $^{138}$La $\beta$-decay shape factor and EC probabilities. New determinations for the $^{138}$Ce 2EC $Q$ value and the atomic masses of $^{138}$La, $^{138}$Ce, and $^{138}$Ba are also reported. Conclusion: The $^{138}$La $\beta$-decay $Q$ value measured by Quarati et al. is in excellent agreement with our new result, which is an order of magnitude more precise. Uncertainties in the shape factor calculations for $^{138}$La beta-decay using our new $Q$ value are reduced by an order of magnitude. Abstract

We investigated the low-lying spectroscopy of 6He via the 2-neutron transfer reaction induced by the 8He SPIRAL beam at 15.4 A.MeV on a proton-rich target. The light charged recoil particles produced by the direct reactions were measured using theMUST2 Si-strip telescope array. Two new resonances were observed above the known 2+ state in 6He, and the angular momentum transfer was deduced through the analysis of the angular distributions. Results are discussed in comparison with the recent calculations of various nuclear structure theories which include the coupling to the continuum technique and to the ones which give an understanding of the cluster correlations in the light weakly-bound nuclei.

An experimental spectroscopic investigation of some neutron rich Mg and Al isotopes around the shell closure N=20 has been performed. The delayed neutron and $\gamma$ spectra, following the $\beta$-decay of $^{33}$Mg and $^{35}$Al have been measured using the delayed neutron detector array TONNERRE coupled with high efficiency EXOGAM clover detectors, a LEPS detector and eight low-energy neutron detectors. A detailed analysis of such spectra allows one to construct the level schemes of their daughters, $^{32,33)$Al and $^{34,35}$Si. The resulting spectroscopic information will provide stringent tests of large scale shell model calculations including np - nh excitations aimed at the understanding of the structural effects occurring in this region.

Abstract

The gamma spectroscopy of Ne-25,Ne-27 and Na-26,Na-27 was studied from the reaction of Ne-26 with a deuterium target in inverse kinematics at 9.7 MeV/nucleon. The selectivity of the (d,p),(d,t), and (d,n) transfer reactions provides new spectroscopic information on low-lying states. The validity of the sd shell-model space for these nuclei is discussed. Abstract

We report results from searches for new physics with low-energy electronic recoil data recorded with the XENON1T detector. With an exposure of 0.65 t-y and an unprecedentedly low background rate of $76\pm2$ events/(t y keV) between 1 and 30 keV, the data enables sensitive searches for solar axions, an enhanced neutrino magnetic moment, and bosonic dark matter. An excess over known backgrounds is observed at low energies and most prominent between 2 and 3 keV. The solar axion model has a 3.4$\sigma$ significance, and a 3D 90% confidence surface is reported for axion couplings to electrons, photons, and nucleons. This surface is inscribed in the cuboid defined by $g_{ae}, Comment: 26 pages, 15 figures. v2 added Ar37 background discussion and best-fit mass of bosonic dark matter, v3 updated Ar37 discussion, tritium estimation, and solar axion energy spectrum.
