Abstract

The article discusses damages of essential tribological associations in crankshaft and piston systems of large power two-stroke engines used as main engines, which take place during transport tasks performed by those ships. Difficulties are named which make preventing those damages impossible, despite the fact that the technical state of engines of this type is identified with the aid of complex diagnostic systems making use of advanced computer technology. It is demonstrated that one of causes of the damages is the lack of research activities oriented on recognising random properties of the loads leading to those damages. A proposal is made for the loads acting at a given time t on tribological associations in crankshaft and piston systems of internal combustion engines used as main engines to be considered as random variables Qt. At the same time the loads examined within a given time interval tr ≤ t ≤ tz would be considered stochastic processes {Q(t): t ≥ 0}. Essential properties of the loads of the abovementioned tribological associations are named and explained by formulating hypotheses which need empirical verification. Interval estimation is proposed for estimating the expected value E(Qt) of the load Qt acting at time t. A relation is indicated between the mechanical load and the thermal load acting on tribological associations in the ship main engine crankshaft and piston system. A suggestion is formulated that a stochastic form of the relation between these types of load is to be searched for, rather than statistic relation, and a proposal is made to measure the intensity (strength) of the stochastic relation using the Czuprow’s convergence coefficient.

Abstract

This paper presents the results of the fast neutron irradiation (E$_n$ > 0.5MeV) of an EJ-276 scintillator performed in the MARIA research reactor with fluence up to 5.3$\times$10$^{15}$ particles/cm$^2$. In our work, four samples with size $\phi$25.4~mm$\times$5~mm were tested. The changes in the light yield, emission and absorption spectrum and neutron/gamma discrimination using PuBe source before and after irradiation are presented. The figure of merit in neutron/gamma discrimination based on the charge integration method for different neutron fluences and different short gate integration times are determined., Comment: 13 pages, 15 figures

Abstract

This paper presents the results of the proton irradiation of silicon photomulipliers (SiPMs) by mono-energetic 170 MeV protons with fluence up to 4.6$\times$10$^{9}$ particles/cm$^2$. In our work, three types of silicon photodetectors from Hamamatsu with areas 3$\times$3 mm$^2$ and different subpixel sizes of 25$\times$25 $\mu$m$^2$, 50$\times$50 $\mu$m$^2$, and 75$\times$75 $\mu$m$^2$ were used. The changes in the SiPM dark count rate (DCR) spectrum before and after irradiation in temperatures in the range of 20 $^\circ$C to -65 $^\circ$C are presented. The influence of the DCR changes on the energy resolution of the 662 keV gamma line from the $^{137}$Cs for a non-irradiated GAGG:Ce (1$\%$) scintillator is investigated. The time period of usability of the SiPM detector irradiated by protons in cosmic space was estimated.

Abstract

In this manuscript we report on the scintillation properties and pulse shape discrimination (PSD) performance of new organic glass scintillator. Two cylindrical samples with dimensions of 2x2 inches were tested. Additionally, this two samples were used in stack configuration in order to measure the PSD characteristics of a sample with a size of 2x4 inches. The study covers the measurements of neutron/gamma discrimination capability, emission spectra, photoelectron yield and analysis of the light pulse shapes originating from events related to gamma-rays and fast neutrons. The results were compared to data recorded previously using an EJ-276 plastic scintillator, an EJ-309 liquid scintillator and a stilbene single crystal.

NEDA has been designed to be a versatile device, with high-detection efficiency, excellent neutron-gamma discrimination, and high rate capabilities. It will be employed in physics campaigns in order to maximise the scientific output, making use of the different stable and radioactive ion beams available in Europe. the first implementation of the neutron detector array NEDA with AGATA 1 pi was realised at GANIL. Research background: To a limited extent, modern researchers are interested in ordoliberalism, as a theory of the socio-economic system, which is confirmed by the results of the bibliometric analysis. In conducted studies, the assumptions of ordoliberalism are used partially, for example, for research on: the role of the state in the economy, the antitrust law, the theoretical assumptions of the SME, the determinants of German economic policy after World War II.

Abstract

Especially in periods of crises, economists try to explain why some economies suffer negative consequences more strongly than others. In order to explain these differential effects, two economic categories known as economic vulnerability and economic resilience can be used. Hence, the aim of the paper is to undertake a critical reflection on the interrelated categories of economic vulnerability and resilience to shocks. The paper analyses these categories from a theoretical perspective and identifies the factors that shape each of them. It then attempts to measure the economic vulnerability and resilience of selected European countries using two synthetic variables. Based on these, a classification of countries in terms of economic vulnerability and resilience was made. The results achieved provide a good starting point for a more detailed study of the paths of crises and their consequences in individual countries.

Abstract

In the energy range E =2.8...42.2 MeV, the light output S was measured for ZnSe-based scintillators under irradiation with α- particles and heavy ions 81Br. Under such irradiation, the proportionality S(Еα,i) is observed up to energies Еα≤7 MeV. Substantial deviation from linearity in the region of higher energies is explained by different contribution to S from both primary and δ-electrons. Increases were also observed in the values of intrinsic energy resolution with shorter shaping time constants. Виміряно світловий вихід S для сцинтиляторів, заснованих на ZnSe, при опроміненні α-частками і важкими іонами 81Br у діапазоні енергій E =2.8...42.2 МеВ. При опроміненні спостерігалася пропорційність S(Е α ,i) до енергій Еα ≤7 МеВ. Істотне відхилення від лінійності в області більш високих енергій пояснюється різним внеском у S як первинних, так і δ-електронів. Помітний вплив на криву пропорційності і спектри енергії робило легування Te. Измерен световой выход S для сцинтилляторов, основанных на ZnSe, при облучении α-частицами и тяжелыми ионами 81Br в диапазоне энергий E=2.8...42.2 МэВ. При облучении наблюдалась пропорциональность S(Еα,i) до энергий Еα ≤7 МэВ. Существенное отклонение от линейности в области более высоких энергий объясняется различным вкладом в S как первичных, так и и δ-электронов. Заметное влияние на кривую пропорциональности и спектры энергии оказывало легирование Te.

Abstract

Experimental studies of CsI(Tl) crystals with different amount of Tl activator are presented. Such properties like non-proportionality, energy resolution and number of photoelectrons per 1 MeV-γ were inspected at two different shaping time constants, i.e. 3 and 12 μs. A CsT(Tl) crystal was coupled to the XP5212 PMT with a photocathode blue sensitivity of 12.2μA/lmF. Six GsI(Tl) crystals of different size were tested. Among them three samples were of known Tl concentration which amounted roughly 0.05, 0.1 and 0.25 mol%. The data analysis showed much more proportional character of the crystal response, higher number of photoelectrons/MeV-γ, and what follows better overall energy resolution obtained for 12 μs time constant for all tested samples. Calculated intrinsic resolution improved at longer shaping time constant as well, indicating that for CsI(Tl) crystals more proportional response implies better intrinsic energy resolution of the host crystal. In contrast, intrinsic resolution at low energy region (below about 30 keV) deteriorated for the longer shaping time constant. An α/γ ratio was also measured for each tested CsI(Tl) crystal in order to find any indication to an explanation of the intrinsic resolution deterioration for low energy photons at the 12 μs integration time., QC 20141112

Abstract

One of the essential requirements of the Tagged Neutron Inspection System, which is the principle of the EURITRACK project, is an efficient and inexpensive gamma ray detector. For this purpose properties of cylindrical 3"×3" and 5"×5" BGO, and 3"×3", two different 5"×5", and a rectangular 5"×5" ×10" NaI(Tl) scintillators were explored. In this communication we report on light yield, energy and time resolution of the investigated crystals at high energies of γ-rays. Additionally, results of Monte Carlo simulations of the crystals' efficiencies are compared to peak-to-total ratios obtained experimentally for various combinations of PMTs and the scintillators., QC 20141215

Abstract

The scientific aim of the paper is to juxtapose the views on economic order developed by the leading representatives of two schools of liberal thinking – German ordoliberal Walter Eucken and the Austrian economist Friedrich August von Hayek. The first scholar opted for deliberately constructed competitive economic order, the second one advocates for allowing the social institutions to emerge and evolve spontaneously. The analysis proves the similarity of both theories in regard to the significance of principles of an economic order and the importance of competition for maintaining individual freedom. On the other hand some differences in the areas of sources of rules, institutional change, and the role of the state, induce their complementarity. Developing an intellectual basis for economic policy requires an eclectic approach combining two analysed perspectives.

Abstract

The paper focuses on a comparison of different positioning methods provided by free and open source software (FOSS) package called RTKLIB. The RTKLIB supports real-time and post-processed positioning. The most important modes of operation tested by the authors are Kinematic, Static, Fixed and Precise Point Positioning (PPP). The data for evaluation were obtained from low-cost Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receiver. The tested receiver was based on the u-blox's LEA-6T GNSS module. This receiver provides different types of information including raw carrier phase measurements. It gives the possibility for centimeter-level precision of positioning. As the supporting source of data ASG-EUPOS system was used. ASG-EUPOS is a Polish network of GNSS reference stations providing the real-time corrections and post processing services for the entire territory of Poland. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

LaBr3:Ce,CeBr3 and GAGG:Ce scintillators were investigated and the determined characteristics were compared with those obtained for the well-known and widely used CsI:Tl and NaI:Tl crystals. All the detectors were of the same size of 10 × 10 × 5 mm3. The aim of this test study was to single out scintillation detectors most suitable for γ-ray spectrometry and γ-ray emission radial profile measurements in high-temperature plasma experiments. Decay time, energy resolution, non-proportionality and full energy peak detection efficiency ere measured for γ-ray energies up to 1770 keV. Due to their good energy resolution, short decay time and high detection efficiency for MeV gamma rays, LaBr3:Ce and CeBr3 scintillators are proposed as the best candidates for use especially under conditions of high count rates, which are expected in the forthcoming DT experiments.

Abstract

Neutron inspection of sea-going cargo containers has been widely studied in the past 20 yr to non-intrusively detect terrorist threats, like explosives or Special Nuclear Materials (SNM), and illicit goods, like narcotics or smuggling materials. Fast 14 MeV neutrons are produced by a portable generator with the t(d, n)α fusion reaction, and tagged in both direction and time thanks to the alpha particle detection. This Associated Particle Technique (APT) allows focusing inspection on specific areas of interest in the containers, previously identified as containing suspicious items with X-ray radiographic scanners or radiation portal monitors. We describe the principle of APT for non-nuclear material identification, and for nuclear material detection, then we provide illustrations of the performances for 10 min inspections with significant quantities (kilograms) of explosives, illicit drugs, or SNM, in different cargo cover loads (e.g. metallic, organic, or ceramic matrices).

Abstract

In this paper we present the prompt photofission neutron detection performance of undoped CaF2 scintillator using Threshold Activation Detection (TAD). The study is carried out in the frame of C-BORD Horizon 2020 project, during which an efficient toolbox for high volume freight non-intrusive inspection (NII) is under development. Technologies for radiation monitoring are the part of the project. Particularly, detection of various radiological threats on country borders plays an important significant role in Homeland Security applications. Detection of illegal transfer of Special Nuclear Material (SNM) - 235U, 233U and 239Pu - is particular due to the potential use for production of nuclear weapon as well as radiological dispersal device (RDD) V known also as a “dirty bomb”. This technique relies on activation of 19F nuclei in the scintillator medium by fast neutrons and registration of high-energy β particles and γ-rays from the decay of reaction products. The radiation from SNM is detected after irradiation in order to avoid detector blinding. Despite the low 19F(n,α)16N or 19F(n,p)19O reaction cross-section, the method could be a good solution for detection of shielded nuclear material. Results obtained with the CaF2 detector were compared with the previous study done for BaF2 and 3He detector. These experimental results were obtained using 252Cf source and 9 MeV Varian Linatron M9 linear accelerator (LINAC). Finally, performance of the prompt neutron detection system based on CaF2 will be validated at Rotterdam Seaport during field trails in 2018.

Abstract

Photocurrent-voltage characteristic (PC-V) is a method of determining the critical parameter in X-ray and gamma-ray detector plates, i.e., the carrier mobility-lifetime product, μτ. We show for the (Cd,Mn)Te samples that the measurement results depend strongly on the surface treatment and the space charge distribution. The PC-V characteristics obtained for ħω > Eg and ħω ~ Eg indicated that etching with 20% HCl caused an appearance of a significant concentration of very shallow surface traps at the (Cd,Mn)Te sample surface. These traps seriously changed the results of measurements of PC-V characteristics and PC kinetics. We also noticed a small contribution of holes to photoconductivity in the PC kinetics. The measurements of PC-V characteristics for ħω > Eg may test the detector plate surface quality.

Abstract

Underwater noise has been identified as a relevant pollution affecting marine ecosystems in different ways. Despite the numerous studies performed over the last few decades regarding the adverse effect of underwater noise on marine life, a lack of knowledge and methodological procedures still exists, and results are often tentative or qualitative. A monitoring methodology for the behavioral response of bluefin tuna ( Thunnus thynnus ) when exposed to ship and wind turbine operational noises was implemented and tested in a fixed commercial tuna feeding cage in the Mediterranean sea. Fish behavior was continuously monitored, combining synchronized echosounder and video recording systems. Automatic information extracted from acoustical echograms was used to describe tuna reaction to noise in terms of average depth and vertical dimensions of the school and the indicators of swimming speed and tilt direction. Video recordings allowed us to detect changes in swimming patterns. Different kinds of stimuli were considered during bluefin tuna cage monitoring, such as noise generated by feeding boats, wind farm operational noise, and other synthetic signals projected in the medium using a broadband underwater projector. The monitoring system design was revealed as a successful methodological approach to record and quantify reactions to noise. The obtained results suggested that the observed reactions presented a strong relationship with insonification pressure level and time. Behavioral changes associated with noise are difficult to observe, especially in semi-free conditions; thus, the presented approach offered the opportunity to link anthropogenic activity with possible effects on a given marine species, suggesting the possibility of achieving a more realistic framework to assess the impacts of underwater noise on marine animals.

22. Inverse problem solution techniques as applied to indirect in situ estimation of fish target strength.

Abstract

In situ indirect methods of fish target strength (TS) estimation are analyzed in terms of the inverse techniques recently applied to the problem in question. The solution of this problem requires finding the unknown probability density function (pdf) of fish target strength from acoustic echoes, which can be estimated by solving the integral equation, relating pdf's of echo variable, target strength, and beam pattern of the echosounder transducer. In the first part of the paper the review of existing indirect in situ TS-estimation methods is presented. The second part introduces the novel TS-estimation methods, viz.: Expectation, Maximization, and Smoothing (EMS), Windowed Singular Value Decomposition (WSVD), Regularization and Wavelet Decomposition, which are compared using simulations as well as actual data from acoustic surveys. The survey data, acquired by the dual-beam digital echosounder, were thoroughly analyzed by numerical algorithms and the target strength and acoustical backscattering length pdf's estimates were calculated from fish echoes received in the narrow beam channel of the echosounder. Simultaneously, the estimates obtained directly from the dual-beam system were used as a reference for comparison of the estimates calculated by the newly introduced inverse techniques. The TS estimates analyzed in the paper are superior to those obtained from deconvolution or other conventional techniques, as the newly introduced methods partly avoid the problem of ill-conditioned equations and matrix inversion.
