Abstract

We investigate experimentally and theoretically the electron emission in collisions between He atoms and Li$^{q+}$ (q=1,2) projectiles at intermediate-high incident energies. We report on measured absolute values of double differential cross-sections, as a function of the emitted electron energy and angle, at a collision energy of 440~keV/u. The different contributions from target-ionisation, projectile-ionisation, and simultaneous target-projectile ionisation are calculated with the quantum-mechanical Continuum Distorted Wave and Continuum Distorted Wave -- Eikonal Initial State models, and with Classical Trajectory Monte Carlo simulations. There is an overall good agreement of the calculations with the experimental data for electron emission cross-sections., Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

El proceso de ionización electrónica simple de átomos de helio por impacto de protones se estudia en el marco de un modelo de onda distorsionada de cuatro cuerpos donde ambos electrones son considerados como activos, siendo uno de ellos ionizado mientras el otro queda ligado al blanco residual. Se presentan aquí detalles del modelo teórico, resultados, y se discute el rol de la correlación electrónica The process of single electron ionization of atomic helium targets by proton impact is studied in the frame of a four-body distorted wave model where both electrons are considered as active ones, being one of them ionized while the other remains bound to the residual target. 46. Pharmacotherapy of Insomnia: Focus on Zolpidem Extended Release.

Abstract

The imidazopyridine drug zolpidem (N,N,6-trimethyl-2[4-methyl-phenyl]imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine-3-acetamide) is a sedative/hypnotic with relative selectivity for α1 subunits of the GABAA receptor/chloride channel complex. Because of this selectivity and regional receptor distribution, zolpidem is less generalized in its CNS depressive actions than benzodiazepines and largely devoid of their major, undesired sideand after-effects, at recommended doses. Zolpidem is rapidly taken up and distributed, binds extensively to plasma proteins, and is readily inactivated by hepatic cytochrome P450 monooxygenases, especially CYP3A4. Zolpidem is thus a rapidly acting agent which provides effective facilitation of sleep onset. However, plasma levels of the immediate release (IR) formulation frequently decline too quickly for effective sleep maintenance. To address this problem zolpidem extended release (ER) has been developed. At age-specifi c dosages, it increases, in middle-aged and elderly patients, total sleep time and reduces the number of nocturnal awakenings. Both zolpidem IR and ER have favorable toxicological profi les. Adverse effects are moderate, frequently in the incidence range of placebos, and certainly less frequent and severe than those of benzodiazepines. Zolpidem IR and ER are practically devoid of next-day hangover effects and only infrequently cause rebound insomnia of usually short duration. Abstract

Depressive disorders are a common cause of chronic and recurrent psychiatric dysfunction, constituting the fourth leading cause of global diseases. Depression is associated with a high rate of morbidity and mortality, and is a leading cause of global disability, Despite the effectiveness of most currently available antidepressants, many of them have a number of undesirable side effects. Agomelatine is the first melatonin (MT)1/MT2 agonist having 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT)2C and 5-HT2B antagonist properties and antidepressant activity. Agomelatine is effective in several animal models of depression and anxiety. In addition, three large, multicenter, multinational, placebo-controlled studies and several double-blind, placebo-controlled trials of agomelatine have demonstrated that it is a clinically effective and well-tolerated antidepressant in acute trials. Since currently available antidepressant are not always adequate to cause complete remission of symptoms in severely depressed patients, the superior rate of response achieved agomelatine in this group of patients underlines its future for clinical use in depressive disorders. In summary, the clinical advantage of agomelatine is attributed to its novel mechanism of action, which helps not only to exert antidepressant action, but also to regulate the sleep-wake rhythm. Abstract

1 A study was carried out in rats (prepared for chronic sleep recording) of the effects of pretreatment with neuroleptics differing in their relative antinoradrenaline and antidopamine receptor potencies, on the L-DOPA and (+)-amphetamine-induced increase in waking EEG. 2 Haloperidol (0.6 mg/kg), which blocks central dopamine and noradrenaline (NA) receptors, reversed the EEG desynchronizing actions of L-DOPA and (+)-amphetamine. 3 Low doses of pimozide (0.4 to 0.8 mg/kg) which block dopamine receptors exclusively, were not able to modify the pharmacologically induced disruption of the sleep-awake cycle. However, at 1 mg/kg, a dose which also produces blockade of NA receptors, pimozide counteracted the increase in waking elicited by (+)-amphetamine. 4 Spiroperidol (1 to 4 mg/kg) which is devoided of NA receptor blocking properties, failed to reverse the L-DOPA or (+)-amphetamine-induced arousal. 5 Our results suggest that the increased waking time observed after the catecholamine agonists is related to an increased availability of NA rather than dopamine.
