2D materials have received a lot of interest over the past decade. Especially van der Waals (vdW) 2D materials, such as transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), and their heterostructures exhibit semiconducting properties that make them highly suitable for novel device applications. Controllable mixing and matching of the 2D materials with different properties and precise control of the in‐plane twist angle in these heterostructures are essential to achieve superior properties and need to be established through large‐scale device fabrication. To gain fundamental insight into the potential control of these twist angles, 2D heterostructures of tungsten disulfide (WS2) and graphene (Gr) grown by bottom‐up synthesis via metal‐organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) are investigated using a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM). Specifically, the combination of conventional high‐resolution imaging with scanning nanobeam diffraction (SNBD) using advanced 4D STEM techniques is used to analyze moiré structures. The latter technique is used to reveal the epitaxial alignment within the WS2/Gr heterostructure, showing a direct influence of the underlying Gr layers on the moiré structure in the subsequent WS2 layers. This study takes water patterns and cloud patterns as examples to explore the evolution and contemporary performance of traditional Chinese patterns. Firstly, the background and importance of traditional Chinese patterns in the field of cultural pedagogy are introduced. Subsequently, the purpose and significance of the research are expounded, in order to deeply understand and excavate the development and contemporary expression of traditional Chinese patterns. According to the purpose of the study, the two main research methods of this study were analysis of literature and field research. Through the study of the evolution process of water pattern and cloud pattern, the changes and evolution laws of water pattern and cloud pattern in different historical periods and regions are found. The results show that the water pattern and the cloud pattern have the same material matrix, different modeling structure, and different dyeing materials, which are graphics evolved from traditional patterns, representing the meaning of heart, chest, belly and auspiciousness, respectively. Therefore, traditional patterns can provide inspiration for modern design, extend the role and use of traditional patterns, and provide reference and reference for archaeological pattern research. Moiré patterns result from setting a 2D material such as graphene on another 2D material with a small twist angle or from the lattice mismatch of 2D heterostructures. We present a continuum model for the elastic energy of these bilayer moiré structures that includes an intralayer elastic energy and an interlayer misfit energy that is minimized at two stackings (disregistries). We show by theory and computation that the displacement field that minimizes the global elastic energy subject to a global boundary constraint gives large alternating regions of one of the two energy-minimizing stackings separated by domain walls. We derive a model for the domain wall structure from the continuum bilayer energy and give a rigorous asymptotic estimate for the structure. We also give an improved estimate for the L 2 -norm of the gradient on the moiré unit cell for twisted bilayers that scales at most inversely linearly with the twist angle, a result which is consistent with the formation of one-dimensional domain walls with a fixed width around triangular domains at very small twist angles. When graphene is placed on a crystalline surface, the periodic structures within the layers superimpose and moiré superlattices form. Small lattice rotations between the two materials in contact strongly modify the moiré lattice parameter, upon which many electronic, vibrational, and chemical properties depend. While precise adjustment of the relative orientation in the degree- and sub-degree-range can be achieved via careful deterministic transfer of graphene, we report on the spontaneous reorientation of graphene on a metallic substrate, Ir(111). We find that selecting a substrate temperature between 1530 and 1000 K during the growth of graphene leads to distinct relative rotational angles of 0°, ± 0.6°, ±1.1°, and ±1.7°. When modeling the moiré superlattices as two-dimensional coincidence networks, we can ascribe the observed rotations to favorable low-strain graphene structures. The dissimilar thermal expansion of the substrate and graphene is regarded as an effective compressive biaxial pressure that is more easily accommodated in graphene by small rotations rather than by compression.

As today’s printing volume worldwide decreases, and most traditional printing engines are expensive non-digital devices (offset), the demand for a low-cost digital replacement is rapidly increasing. A main disadvantage of digital presses is the low-resolution capabilities, introducing a compromise in the print quality (PQ). A key factor of print quality is the halftoning algorithm. A very common halftoning method is amplitude modulation (AM) halftone screening, in which dots are placed on a repetitive lattice, varying in size as a function of the grey level. The main AM screen design PQ challenge for low-resolution devices is the quantization frequencies, a disturbing pattern that usually emerges when a screen is approximated to a rational angle due to low resolution. Fourier-based analysis is a classical rule-based method to filter out screens that suffer from visually disturbing quantization patterns. This work presents a new approach that tackles this challenge by incorporating machine learning with the classic Fourier-based approach. Particularly, we show that a binary decision tree classifier with a Fourier-based feature vector has an accuracy of 95% in identifying quantization-free screens compared to the classic rule-based method, which has an accuracy of 66%. We conclude by demonstrating the use of the screen classifier to design a quantization-free screen set. This is done by first applying the screen classifier to the entire screen pool, that is, the set of all possible screens for a given print engine, followed by a rosette zero-moiré offset-like screen design.

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) as a tool supporting the diagnosis and treatment of spinal diseases is eagerly anticipated. In the field of diagnostic imaging, the possible application of AI includes diagnostic support for diseases requiring highly specialized expertise, such as trauma in children, scoliosis, symptomatic diseases, and spinal cord tumors. Moiré topography, which describes the 3-dimensional surface of the trunk with band patterns, has been used to screen students for scoliosis, but the interpretation of the band patterns can be ambiguous. Thus, we created a scoliosis screening system that estimates spinal alignment, the Cobb angle, and vertebral rotation from moiré images. In our system, a convolutional neural network (CNN) estimates the positions of 12 thoracic and 5 lumbar vertebrae, 17 spinous processes, and the vertebral rotation angle of each vertebra. We used this information to estimate the Cobb angle. The mean absolute error (MAE) of the estimated vertebral positions was 3.6 pixels (~5.4 mm) per person. T1 and L5 had smaller MAEs than the other levels. The MAE per person between the Cobb angle measured by doctors and the estimated Cobb angle was 3.42°. The MAE was 4.38° in normal spines, 3.13° in spines with a slight deformity, and 2.74° in spines with a mild to severe deformity. The MAE of the angle of vertebral rotation was 2.9°±1.4°, and was smaller when the deformity was milder. The proposed method of estimating the Cobb angle and AVR from moiré images using a CNN is expected to enhance the accuracy of scoliosis screening.

Moiré superlattices in two-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures provide an efficient way to engineer electron band properties. The recent discovery of exotic quantum phases and their interplay in twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) has made this moiré system one of the most renowned condensed matter platforms. So far studies of tBLG have been mostly focused on the lowest two flat moiré bands at the first magic angle θm1 ~ 1.1°, leaving highorder moiré bands and magic angles largely unexplored. Here we report an observation of multiple well-isolated flat moiré bands in tBLG close to the second magic angle θm2 ~ 0.5°, which cannot be explained without considering electron-election interactions. With high magnetic field magnetotransport measurements we further reveal an energetically unbound Hofstadter butterfly spectrum in which continuously extended quantized Landau level gaps cross all trivial band gaps. The connected Hofstadter butterfly strongly evidences the topologically nontrivial textures of the multiple moiré bands. Overall, our work provides a perspective for understanding the quantum phases in tBLG and the fractal Hofstadter spectra of multiple topological bands. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present strong experimental evidence for the moiré origin of superlattices on graphite by imaging a live transition from one superlattice to another with concurrent and direct measurement of the orientation angle before and after rotation using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). This has been possible due to a fortuitous observation of a superlattice on a nanometer-sized graphene flake wherein we have induced a further rotation of the flake utilizing the capillary forces at play at a solid–liquid interface using STM tip motion. We propose a more “realistic” tip–surface meniscus relevant to STM at solid–liquid interfaces and show that the capillary force is sufficient to account for the total expenditure of energy involved in the process.

The valence band maxima of most group VI transition metal dichalcogenide thin films remain at the 􀀀 point all of the way from bulk to bilayer. In this paper, we develop a continuum theory of the moire' minibands that are formed in the valence bands of 􀀀-valley homobilayers by a small relative twist. Our effective theory is benchmarked against large-scale ab initio electronic structure calculations that account for lattice relaxation. As a consequence of an emergent D6 symmetry, we find that low-energy 􀀀-valley moire' holes differ qualitatively from their K-valley counterparts addressed previously; in energetic order, the first three bands realize 1) a single-orbital model on a honeycomb lattice, 2) a two-orbital model on a honeycomb lattice, and 3) a single-orbital model on a kagome lattice. Interference between overlapping periodic patterns gives rise to important phenomena, such as Moiré fringes, appearing when the patterns have different periods or orientations. Here we present a novel phenomenon, applicable to both the classical and quantum regimes, where two one-dimensional localized periodic patterns with the same period interfere to create fringes with anomalous periodicity. We analyze the effect theoretically and demonstrate it with atomic matter waves. When a central parameter of the system is scanned continuously, we observe a discontinuous but piecewise-rigid periodicity of the resulting fringes. We show that this is a universal phenomenon that emerges from a superposition of two spatially shifted localized periodic patterns of any source or nature when they interfere with a global phase difference. The rigidity of the spectrum becomes even more robust for a coherent superposition of non-overlapping wavepackets, although the conventional interferometric visibility drops to zero. The effect is expected to appear in space and time, as well as in the momentum distribution of quantum particles.

Digital halftoning is an essential part of the process for printing color, continuous-tone content. Traditionally, the highest quality has been achieved with analog, offset lithographic presses, using color screen sets that yield periodic, clustered-dot halftone patterns. Increasingly, these systems are being supplanted by digital presses that are based on either electrophotographic or inkjet marking processes. Due to the inherent instability of the electrophotographic marking process, periodic, clustered-dot halftone patterns are also widely used with such presses. However, digital presses have much lower resolution than their analog counterparts. Simply mimicking the traditional screen designs used with commercial, offset presses will result in halftone patterns that are more susceptible to moire due to the interaction between the periodic patterns used to render the different color channels. This causes instability in the printed colors. The moire can be reduced by increasing the frequency of the halftone patterns. But this may make the print appear grainier than its analog counterpart. In this paper, we introduce a principled design procedure that allows one to design color screen sets that generate periodic, clustered-dot halftone patterns that improve color stability without increasing graininess. Residual deformation evaluation of underfill (UF) materials in flip chips is crucial to improve the reliability of electronic packages. In this study, we propose to evaluate the residual thermal strain distributions using an inverse method based on the sampling moiré technique. Even if a grid pattern is fabricated on the specimen at room temperature, the residual strain distributions at an arbitrary temperature relative to the specimen formation temperature can be successfully calculated. The residual strain distributions relative to the free contraction state at an arbitrary temperature can also be measured when the coefficient of thermal expansion is available. A thermal chamber for flip chips was designed under a laser scanning microscope. Using the proposed method, the normal, shear and principal internal strain distributions and deformation characteristics of two kinds of UFs in flip chips were investigated relative to 150 °C. The strains of the UF with low glass transition temperature (UF-A) concentrate near the die material, especially at the die corner, while the strain concentration of the underfill with high glass transition temperature (UF-B) mainly occurs at the die corner and the buffer layer. The maximum principal strain of UF-A is greater than that of UF-B around the die corner. The residual maximum principal strain distributions relative to the free contraction state at 25 °C were compared with the simulation results by the finite element method. We introduce a general framework to study moiré structures of two-dimensional Van der Waals magnets using continuum field theory. The formalism eliminates quasi periodicity and allows a full understanding of magnetic structures and their excitations. In particular, we analyze in detail twisted bi layers of N ́eelantiferromagnets on the honeycomb lattice. A rich phase diagram with noncollinear twisted phases is obtained, and spin waves are further calculated. Direct extensions to zigzag anti-ferromagnets and ferromagnets are also presented. We anticipate the results and formalism demonstrated to lead to abroad range of applications to both fundamental research and experiments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CEA-LITEN develops an original process called Boostream® to manipulate, assemble and connect micro- or nanoparticles of various materials, sizes, shapes and functions to obtain monolayer colloidal crystals (MCCs). This process uses the upper surface of a liquid film flowing down a ramp to assemble particles in a manner that is close to the horizontal situation of a Langmuir-Blodgett film construction. In presence of particles at the liquid interface, the film down-flow configuration exhibits an unusual hydraulic jump which results from the fluid flow accommodation to the particle monolayer. In order to master our process, the fluid flow has been modeled and experimentally characterized by optical means, such as with the moiré technique that consists in observing the reflection of a succession of periodic black-and-red fringes on the liquid surface mirror. The fringe images are deformed when reflected by the curved liquid surface associated with the hydraulic jump, the fringe deformation being proportional to the local slope of the surface. This original experimental setup allowed us to get the surface profile in the jump region and to measure it along with the main process parameters (liquid flow rate, slope angle, temperature sensitive fluid properties such as dynamic viscosity or surface tension, particle sizes). This work presents the experimental setup and its simple model, the different experimental characterization techniques used and will focus on the way the hydraulic jump relies on the process parameters. Study Design: Optical cross-sectional study. Purpose: To study the correlation between asymmetry of the back (measured by means of surface topography) and deformity of the spine (quantified by the Cobb angle). Overview of Literature: The Cobb angle is considered the gold standard in diagnosis and follow-up of scoliosis but does not correctly characterize the three-dimensional deformity of scoliosis. Furthermore, the exposure to ionizing radiation may cause harmful effects particularly during the growth stage, including breast cancer and other tumors. Methods: Patients aged 13.15±1.96 years (range, 7-17 years; n=88) with Cobb angle greater than 10° were evaluated with X-rays and our back surface topography method through three variables: axial plane (DHOPI), coronal plane (POTSI), and profile plane (PC). Pearson's correlation was applied to determine the correlation between topographic and radiographic variables. One-way analysis of variance and Bonferroni correction were used to compare groups with different grades of scoliosis. Significance was set at p <0.01 and, in some cases, at p <0.05. Results: We detected a positive, statistically significant correlation between Cobb angle with DHOPI (r =0.810) and POTSI (r =0.629) and between PC variables with thoracic kyphosis angle (r =0.453) and lordosis lumbar angle (r =0.275). In addition, we found statistically significant differences for DHOPI and POTSI variables according to the grade of scoliosis. Conclusions: Although the back surface topography method cannot substitute for radiographs in the diagnosis of scoliosis, correlations between radiographic and topographic parameters suggest that it offers additional quantitative data that may complement radiologic study. We report on strategies for characterizing hexagonal coincidence phases by analyzing the involved spatial moiré beating frequencies of the pattern. We derive general properties of the moiré regarding its symmetry and construct the spatial beating frequency ${\vec{K}}_{\text{moir{\'e}}}$ as the difference between two reciprocal lattice vectors ${\vec{k}}_{i}$ of the two coinciding lattices. Considering reciprocal lattice vectors ${\vec{k}}_{{i}}$ , with lengths of up to n times the respective (1, 0) beams of the two lattices, readily increases the number of beating frequencies of the n th-order moiré pattern. We predict how many beating frequencies occur in n th-order moirés and show that for one hexagonal lattice rotating above another the involved beating frequencies follow circular trajectories in reciprocal-space. The radius and lateral displacement of such circles are defined by the order n and the ratio x of the two lattice constants. The question of whether the moiré pattern is commensurate or not is addressed by using our derived concept of commensurability plots. When searching potential commensurate phases we introduce a method, which we call cell augmentation, and which avoids the need to consider high-order beating frequencies as discussed using the reported $(6\sqrt{3}\times 6\sqrt{3}){R}_{{30}^{^\circ }}$ moiré of graphene on SiC(0001). We also show how to apply our model for the characterization of hexagonal moiré phases, found for transition metal-supported graphene and related systems. We explicitly treat surface x-ray diffraction-, scanning tunneling microscopy- and low-energy electron diffraction data to extract the unit cell of commensurate phases or to find evidence for incommensurability. For each data type, analysis strategies are outlined and avoidable pitfalls are discussed. We also point out the close relation of spatial beating frequencies in a moiré and multiple scattering in electron diffraction data and show how this fact can be explicitly used to extract high-precision data.

Structural components may contain cracks, and for these components a crack tip represents a highly singular stress. The evaluation of the associated strain gradient is difficult to achieve with experimental discrete methods. An efficient alternative are the optical techniques which are non-contact, and so delivering continuous information of the displacement fields and associated derivatives for strain evaluation. This paper describes some experimental methods to fully characterize the displacement field near a crack tip existing in flat plates. Three optical field techniques based on image analysis were used in the present work; respectively, Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry, Moiré Interferometry, and Digital Image Correlation. These methods allow different resolutions which can be adjusted according to the expected strain gradient. While the first method depends on the laser wavelength and position of the illumination sources, the second depends on the grating pitch and the last on the surface texture or painted speckle. Algorithms to derivate and filtering the displacement field are developed to compute the strain field and will be used for further works. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using a ray tracing technique, we investigate the dependence of the moiré effect on the crossing angles between touch screen panels (TSPs) and display panels, the metal grid structures (spacing and width), and metal grid shapes (non-uniform and random grids). Of those design parameters, adjusting the crossing angle (∼45°), reducing the grid width (∼1 μm), and employing a random grid in the shape of irregular hexagon are found to suppress the moiré phenomenon to a great extent. We also provide the simulation scheme that can capture the moiré patterns observed experimentally and useful design guidelines for metal grids. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, a new approach is proposed for characterizing the surface roughness of woven fabrics. This approach is based on the fringe projection moiré techniques and analysis of the moiré pattern, which is caused by the interaction between the Ronchi grating and the periodic structure of a woven fabric. In this study, an image processing procedure was employed and a new parameter called the "roughness index" was defined for quantifying the surface roughness. The results obtained from the moiré technique were validated by a set of pair-comparison subjective tests. The proper correlation, with an average R-squared value of 0.9087, between subjective and objective tests confirmed the accuracy, correctness and efficiency of the new method. Statistical analysis of the roughness results clarified that the effect of fabric structural parameters such as the weave structure and weft density is significant in the confidence range of 95%. A arquitetura das plantas é muito importante para estudos de genética, fotossíntese evapotranspi-ração, e relações máquina/plantas. Esta pesquisa teve o objetivo de desenvolver um novo método para gerar uma imagem tridimensional das plantas. Esta nova técnica pretende determinar a arquitetura de plantas através do método de moiré “phase shift”. A inovação está na utilização de grades defasadas por um ângulo de π/2 radianos entre elas. Uma câmera digital foi utilizada para capturar os padrões moiré, que gerará as imagens a serem processadas. O procedimento para a análise das imagens envolvem softwares como o Microsoft Powerpoint,Coreldraw and Idrisi. O uso de uma grade sinusoidas de grande definição e de luz colimadada, assim com uma câmera CCD de alta resolução, assim como a superposição da descontinuidade durante o procedimento de “desenpacotamento” evitaram a ocorrência de ruído satisfatoriamente, melhorando a qualidade das imagens. A determinação da altura gerou um mapa topográfico de um modelo de planta que foi baseado em técnicas de moiré optico. Os resultados obtidos revelaram grande potencial do novo método proposto para a determinação da arquitetura de plantas com alta precisão, a baixo custo e pouco dispêndio de tempo.

This paper describes three different optical techniques for the measurement of in-plane displacements close to the crack tip which can then be used to determine the presence of crack closure in propagating fatigue cracks. Conventional temporal phase shifting moiré interferometry is described first, followed by an improvement to this technique, load sequence phase stepping, which allows data to be collected much more frequently during a load cycle. Finally, more recent measurements using digital image correlation are reported. Results from all three techniques are compared and the advantages and disadvantages of each approach are discussed. An overview is provided of the use of eight different optical methods with hole drilling to determine residual stresses. The methods considered are: brittle and photoelastic coatings, Moire interferometry, holographic interferometry, electronic speckle pattern interferometry, interferometric strain rosette, digital image correlation and shearography. A number of applications are summarized, such as the use of hole drilling with holographic interferometry to investigate stresses in rock structures accessed by deep boreholes and to determine manufacturing-induced residual stresses in fillets of small radii. Micro electro mechanical systems (MEMS) frequently require displacement measurements with high accuracy, a high sampling rate, and a long sensing travel. However, the available methods for measuring displacements of micro devices are typically limited in terms of at least one of these figures of merit. In this paper, we present a novel implementation of an optical encoding method for measuring displacements of micro devices that provides good capabilities in all of these figures of merit. The optical encoding system combines a commercial reading apparatus with a custom-made metal grating that can be easily produced during MEMS fabrication. The Coherent Gradient Sensor (CGS) is extended to the optical differentiation of specular, diffracted wave fronts leading to the combined measurement of in- and out-of-plane displacement field gradients. A derivation of the underlying optical interference principles is presented along with an analysis of the effective instrument sensitivity. In order to demonstrate the capabilities of the technique, experimental measurements of crack-tip deformation fields were conducted under various loading conditions corresponding to mode-I, mode-II, and mixed mode near-tip crack fields. This article reports an experimental study carried out with the aim of quantifying performance and failure modes of sandwich structures when subjected to impulsive blast loading. In particular, performance enhancement with respect to solid panels of equal mass per unit area is assessed. Likewise, the optimal distribution of the mass per unit area in the design of sandwich structures is investigated by comparing the behavior of sandwich structures with various distributions of face sheets thickness. By employing a previously developed FSI experiment, the study confirmed that usage of sandwich structures is beneficial and that performance enhancements, in terms of maximum panel deflection, as high as 68% are possible. The study also confirms theoretical and computational analyses suggesting that use of soft cores maximizes the benefits. Another interesting aspect revealed by this work is that the level of enhancement is highly related to the applied normalized impulse. The same distribution of mass per unit area between face sheets resulted in different normalized maximum deflection. A better performance enhancement was achieved at lower impulses. Here again, failure modes and their sequence seem to be the directly related to this finding. The work here reported clearly reveals a number of important features in the study of lightweight structures and points out to the synergies between structure geometry, materials, manufacturing methods, and threat levels as manifested by the strength of the impulse. Further theoretical and computational studies accounting for experimentally observed failure modes and its interdependence with the fabrication methods is needed to achieve additional predictive capabilities. Abstract: This paper presents a hybrid procedure for mechanical characterization of hyper-elastic materials based on moiré, finite element analysis and global optimization. The characterization process is absolutely general because does not require any assumption on specimen geometry, loading or/and boundary conditions. The novel experimental approach followed in this research relies on a proper combination of intrinsic moiré and projection moiré which allows 3D displacement components to be measured simultaneously and independently using always the same experimental setup and just one single camera. In order to properly compare experimental data and finite element predictions, 3D displacement information encoded in moiré patterns which are relative to the deformed configuration taken by the specimen are expressed in the reference system of the unloaded state. A global optimization algorithm based on multi-level and multi-point simulated annealing which keeps memory of all best records generated in the optimization is used in order to find the unknown material properties through the minimization of the Ω functional built by summing over the differences between displacements measured experimentally and those predicted numerically. Feasibility, efficiency and robustness of the proposed methodology are demonstrated for both isotropic and anisotropic specimens subject to increasing pressure loads: a natural rubber membrane and a glutaraldehyde treated bovine pericardium patch, respectively. Remarkably, the results of the characterization process are in very good agreement with target data independently determined. For the isotropic specimen, the maximum error on hyper-elastic constants is less than 1% and the residual error on displacements is less than 3.5%. For the anisotropic specimen, the maximum error on material properties is about 3.5% while the residual error on displacements is less than 3%.
