General circulation models (GCMs) are extensively used to estimate the influence of clouds on the global energy budget and other aspects of climate. Because radiative transfer computations involved in GCMs are costly, it is typical to consider only absorption but not scattering by clouds in longwave (LW) spectral bands. In this study, the flux and heating rate biases due to neglecting the scattering of LW radiation by clouds are quantified by using advanced cloud optical property models, and satellite data from Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observation (CALIPSO), CloudSat, Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES), and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) merged products (CCCM). From the products, information about the atmosphere and clouds (microphysical and buck optical properties, and top and base heights) is used to simulate fluxes and heating rates. One-year global simulations for 2010 show that the LW scattering decreases top-of-atmosphere (TOA) upward flux and increases surface downward flux by 2.6 and 1.2 W/m2, respectively, or approximately 10% and 5% of the TOA and surface LW cloud radiative effect, respectively. Regional TOA upward flux biases are as much as 5% of global averaged outgoing longwave radiation (OLR). LW scattering causes approximately 0.018 K/d cooling at the tropopause and about 0.028 K/d heating at the surface. Furthermore, over 40% of the total OLR bias for ice clouds is observed in 350–500 cm−1. Overall, the radiative effects associated with neglecting LW scattering are comparable to the counterpart due to doubling atmospheric CO2 under clear-sky conditions.

The radiative forcing (RF) of carbon dioxide (CO2) is the leading contribution to climate change from anthropogenic activities. Calculating CO2 RF requires detailed knowledge of spectral line parameters for thousands of infrared absorption lines. A reliable spectroscopic characterization of CO2 forcing is critical to scientific and policy assessments of present climate and climate change. Our results show that CO2 RF in a variety of atmospheres is remarkably insensitive to known uncertainties in the three main CO2 spectroscopic parameters: the line shapes, line strengths, and half widths. We specifically examine uncertainty in RF due to line mixing as this process is critical in determining line shapes in the far wings of CO2 absorption lines. RF computed with a Voigt line shape is also examined. Overall, the spectroscopic uncertainty in present-day CO2 RF is less than 1%, indicating a robust foundation in our understanding of how rising CO2 warms the climate system.

Air-broadened half-widths of the 22- and 183-GHz water-vapor lines and associated uncertainties have been determined using comparisons between ground-based radiometric measurements from Atmospheric Radiation Measurement sites in Oklahoma and Alaska, and MonoRTM, a radiative transfer model. Values of the widths obtained using the measurements are 0.0900 [cm.sup.-1]/atm with 1.6% uncertainty for the 22-GHz line and 0.0992 [cm.sup.-1]/atm with 2.4% uncertainty for the 183-GHz line. Also presented are spectroscopic parameters for these lines from new calculations performed using the complex implementation of the Robert--Bonamy theory (CRB). The CRB values of the air-broadened widths are 0.0913 [cm.sup.-1]/atm with 3% uncertainty and a temperature exponent of 0.755 for the 22-GHz line and 0.0997 [cm.sup.-1]/atm with 3% uncertainty and a temperature exponent of 0.769 for the 183-GHz line. The values for the air-broadened half-widths derived from the measurement/model comparisons show good agreement with the new CRB calculations. For future versions of MonoRTM, width values of 0.0900 and 0.0997 [cm.sup.-1]/atm are to be adopted with temperature dependences of 0.76 and 0.77 for the 22- and 183-GHz lines, respectively. The Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer (TES) is a high-resolution spaceborne sensor that is capable of observing tropospheric species. In order to exploit fully TES's potential for tropospheric constituent retrievals, an accurate and fast operational forward model was developed for TES. The forward model is an important component of the TES retrieval model, the Earth Limb and Nadir Operational Retrieval (ELANOR), as it governs the accuracy and speed of the calculations for the retrievals. In order to achieve the necessary accuracy and computational efficiency, TES adopted the strategy of utilizing precalculated absorption coefficients generated by the line-by-line calculations provided by line-by-line radiation transfer modeling. The decision to perform the radiative transfer with the highest monochromatic accuracy attainable, rather than with an accelerated scheme that has the potential to add algorithmic forward model error, has proven to be very successful for TES retrievals. A detailed description of the TES forward model and Jacobians is described. A preliminary TES observation is provided as an example to demonstrate that the TES forward model calculations represent TES observations. Also presented is a validation example, which is part of the extensive forward model validation effort. Cloud longwave scattering is generally neglected in general circulation models (GCMs), but it plays a significant and highly uncertain role in the atmospheric energy budget as demonstrated in recent studies. To reduce the errors caused by neglecting cloud longwave scattering, two new radiance adjustment methods are developed that retain the computational efficiency of broadband radiative transfer simulations. In particular, two existing scaling methods and the two new adjustment methods are implemented in the Rapid Radiative Transfer Model (RRTM). The results are then compared with those based on the Discrete Ordinate Radiative Transfer model (DISORT) that explicitly accounts for multiple scattering by clouds. The two scaling methods are shown to improve the accuracy of radiative transfer simulations for optically thin clouds but not effectively for optically thick clouds. However, the adjustment methods reduce computational errors over a wide range, from optically thin to thick clouds. With the adjustment methods, the errors resulting from neglecting cloud longwave scattering are reduced to less than 2W-22 for the upward irradiance at the top of the atmosphere and less than 0.5W-22 for the surface downward irradiance. The adjustment schemes prove to be more accurate and efficient than a four-stream approximation that explicitly accounts for multiple scattering. The neglect of cloud longwave scattering results in an underestimate of the surface downward irradiance (cooling effect), but the errors are almost eliminated by the adjustment methods (warming effect). Water vapour continuum absorption is an important contributor to the Earth's radiative cooling and energy balance. Here, we describe the development and status of the MT_CKD (MlawerTobinCloughKneizysDavies) water vapour continuum absorption model. The perspective adopted in developing the MT_CKD model has been to constrain the model so that it is consistent with quality analyses of spectral atmospheric and laboratory measurements of the foreign and self continuum. For field measurements, only cases for which the characterization of the atmospheric state has been highly scrutinized have been used. Continuum coefficients in spectral regions that have not been subject to compelling analyses are determined by a mathematical formulation of the spectral shape associated with each water vapour monomer line. This formulation, which is based on continuum values in spectral regions in which the coefficients are well constrained by measurements, is applied consistently to all water vapour monomer lines from the microwave to the visible. The results are summed-up (separately for the foreign and self) to obtain continuum coefficients from 0 to 20 000 cm(-1). For each water vapour line, the MT_CKD line shape formulation consists of two components: exponentially decaying far wings of the line plus a contribution from a water vapour molecule undergoing a weak interaction with a second molecule. In the MT_CKD model, the first component is the primary agent for the continuum between water vapour bands, while the second component is responsible for the majority of the continuum within water vapour bands. The MT_CKD model should be regarded as a semi-empirical model with strong constraints provided by the known physics. Keeping the MT_CKD continuum consistent with current observational studies necessitates periodic updates to the water vapour continuum coefficients. In addition to providing details on the MT_CKD line shape formulation, we describe the most recent update to the model, MT_CKD_2.5, which is based on an analysis of satellite- and ground-based observations from 2385 to 2600 cm(-1) (approx. 4 μm).
