We present a comprehensive magnetic and structural phase diagram for $\mathrm{Y_{1-x}Lu_xBaCo_4O_7}$, established through neutron diffraction and magnetization measurements. Our results outline the evolution of various nuclear structures, encompassing both orthorhombic and monoclinic symmetries, in response to changes in composition and temperature. The phase transition temperature of the orthorhombic phase, $T_{s1}$, decreases with increasing Lu content from 310 K for x = 0.0 to 110 K for x = 1.0. In Lu-rich compositions (0.7 \le x \le 1.0), first-order structural transitions are observed with coexisting and competing orthorhombic Pbn$2_1$ and metastable monoclinic Cc phases. Composition- and temperature-dependent refinements of the magnetic structure reveal an antiferromagnetic arrangement of Co spin pairs, below the magnetic transition temperatures of the Y-rich compositions, in the ab plane within both the triangular and Kagom\'e layers. A gradual suppression of long-range magnetic order is observed with increasing the Lu content, accompanied by the development of short-range magnetic correlations present in all the samples.

A study of the Fermi surface of the putative topological semimetal Pd$_3$Pb has been carried out using Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations measured in fields of up to 60 T. Pd$_3$Pb has garnered attention in the community due to a peculiar Fermi surface that has been proposed theoretically by Ahn, Pickett, and Lee, [Phys. Rev. B 98, 035130 (2018)] to host a dispersion-less band along $X-\Gamma$ as well as multiple triply-degenerate band crossings that, under the influence of spin-orbit coupling, lead to ten four-fold degenerate Dirac points. Analysis of the SdH oscillation data verifies the calculated multi-sheet Fermi surface, revealing a $\Gamma$ centered spheroid that had not been resolved experimentally in prior studies. A comprehensive, angle-dependent analysis of the phase of the SdH oscillations convincingly demonstrates a non-trivial Berry phase for two bands along $\Gamma-R$, supporting the theoretical predictions, while simultaneously evidencing interference between extremal orbits that mimics a trivial Berry phase at intermediate angles., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures (including supplemental document)

Single crystals of a honeycomb lattice antiferromagnet, Tb$_2$Ir$_3$Ga$_9$ were synthesized, and the physical properties have been studied. From magnetometry, a long-range antiferromagnetic ordering at $\approx$12.5 K with highly anisotropic magnetic behavior was found. Neutron powder diffraction confirms that the Tb spins lie along the $\va $-axis, parallel to the shortest Tb-Tb contact. Two field-induced spin-flip transitions are observed when the field is applied parallel to this axis, separated by a plateau corresponding roughly to M$\approx$M$_{\rm{s}}$/2. Transport measurements show the resistivity to be metallic with a discontinuity at the onset of N\'eel order. Heat capacity shows a $\lambda$-like transition confirming the bulk nature of the magnetism. We propose a phenomenological spin-Hamiltonian that describes the magnetization plateau as a result of strong Ising character arising from a quasidoublet ground state of the Tb$^{3+}$ ion in a site of \textit{C$_s$} symmetry and expressing a significant bond dependent anisotropy., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures

We report $\beta$-detected NMR of ion-implanted $^{8}$Li in a single crystal and thin film of the strongly correlated metal LaNiO$_{3}$. In both samples, spin-lattice relaxation measurements reveal two distinct local metallic environments, as is evident from $T$-linear Korringa $1/T_{1}$ below 200 K with slopes comparable to other metals. A small, approximately temperature independent Knight shift of $\sim 74$ ppm is observed, yielding a normalized Korringa product characteristic of substantial antiferromagnetic correlations, but, we find no evidence for a magnetic transition from 4 to 310 K. Two distinct, equally abundant $^{8}$Li sites is inconsistent with the widely accepted rhombohedral structure of LaNiO$_{3}$, but cannot be simply explained by either of the common alternative orthorhombic or monoclinic distortions., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

Searching for new functionality in next generation electronic devices is a principal driver of material physics research. Multiferroics simultaneously exhibit electric and magnetic order parameters that may be coupled through magnetoelectric (ME) effects. In single-phase materials the ME effect arises from one of three known mechanisms: inverse Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (IDM) interaction, spin dependent ligand-metal (p-d) orbital hybridization, and exchange striction. However, the coupling among these mechanisms remains largely unexplored despite envisioned potential capabilities. Here, we present cooperative tuning between both IDM interaction and p-d hybridization that leads to discrete ME states in Ba0.5Sr2.5Co2Fe24O41. In-situ x-ray diffraction exposes the microscopic interplay between these two mechanisms, marked by a unique ME susceptibility upon electric and magnetic fields. The entangled multi-ME coupling phenomenon observed in this room-temperature ME hexaferrite offers a pathway to novel functional control for ME device applications.

Using optimal detection techniques with climate model simulations, most of the observed increase of near surface temperatures over the second half of the twentieth century is attributed to anthropogenic influences. However, the partitioning of the anthropogenic influence to individual factors, such as greenhouse gases and aerosols, is much less robust. Differences in how forcing factors are applied, in their radiative influence and in models' climate sensitivities, substantially influence the response patterns. We find standard optimal detection methodologies cannot fully reconcile this response diversity. By selecting a set of experiments to enable the diagnosing of greenhouse gases and the combined influence of other anthropogenic and natural factors, we find robust detections of well mixed greenhouse gases across a large ensemble of models. Of the observed warming over the 20th century of 0.65K/century we find, using a multi model mean not incorporating pattern uncertainty, a well mixed greenhouse gas warming of 0.87 to 1.22K/century. This is partially offset by cooling from other anthropogenic and natural influences of -0.54 to -0.22K/century. Although better constrained than recent studies, the attributable trends across climate models are still wide, with implications for observational constrained estimates of transient climate response. Some of the uncertainties could be reduced in future by having more model data to better quantify the simulated estimates of the signals and natural variability, by designing model experiments more effectively and better quantification of the climate model radiative influences. We report a magnetic force microscopy study of the magnetic domain evolution in the layered manganite La$_{2-2x}$Sr$_{1+2x}$Mn$_2$O$_7$ (with $x=0.32$). This strongly correlated electron compound is known to exhibit a wide range of magnetic phases, including a recently uncovered biskyrmion phase. We observe a continuous transition from dendritic to stripe-like domains, followed by the formation of magnetic bubbles due to a field- and temperature dependent competition between in-plane and out-of-plane spin alignments. The magnetic bubble phase appears at comparable field- and temperature ranges as the biskyrmion phase, suggesting a close relation between both phases. Based on our real-space images we construct a temperature-field phase diagram for this composition.

The atomic pair distribution function (PDF) technique is employed to probe the atomic local structural responses in naturally double layered manganites \lsmo in the doping range $0.54 \leq x \leq 0.80$. Our low temperature neutron powder diffraction measurements suggest the coexistence of two different Jahn-Teller (JT) distorted MnO$_6$ octahedra when its ordered magnetic structure crosses over from type A ($0.54 \leq x \leq 0.66$) to type C/C$^*$ ($0.74 \leq x \leq 0.90$) ordering. At all doping levels at low temperature the doped holes reside predominantly in the plane of the bilayer. In the type A magnetic ordering regime, the e$_g$ electrons appear to be significantly delocalized in the plane resulting in undistorted octahedra, while in type C/C$^*$ regime, elongated JT distorted octahedra are apparent. This is consistent with the presence of inhomogeneous coexisting delocalized and localized electronic states. No evidence of macroscopic phase separation has been observed. Such nanoscale inhomogeneities may explain the magnetically frustrated behavior observed in the spin disordered ``gap'' region ($0.66 \leq x \leq 0.74$)., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures

We report the synthesis and room temperature crystal structures of the heretofore unknown, metastable manganites La2-2xSr1+2xMn2O7+delta (0.5 < x < 0.9) via high-temperature (T=1650 C) quenching followed by low-temperature (T=400 C) annealing to fill oxygen vacancies; this approach enables access to the electronic, magnetic, and structural properties of previously unexplored compositions in this important CMR system., Comment: submitted to Chemical Communications, 4/7/99
