Abstract

Single-detector 3D dynamic light scattering (3D-DLS) emerges as a reliable technique to determine the drift velocity of out-of-equilibrium colloidal particles. In particular, our investigation reveals the appearance of oscillations of a well-defined frequency in the autocorrelation function of the scattered intensity when particles are immersed in a medium exposed to thermally induced convection. These oscillations arise as a consequence of the directed motion of particles due to the convective motion of the fluid. The experimental results obtained for different colloidal systems are corroborated by a theoretical model and thoroughly validated with fluid dynamics and Brownian dynamics simulations. The excellent agreement between experimental, theoretical and simulation data allows us to provide a solid and comprehensive explanation of the observed physical phenomena. This study via advanced dynamic light scattering (DLS) technique offers insights into the field of non-equilibrium particle dynamics, applicable not only to colloidal suspension affected by steady-state diffusion-convection but also to other non-equilibrium situations, such as systems driven by external fields (gravitational, electric or magnetic fields, among others)., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

The transport of biomolecules, drugs, or reactants encapsulated inside stimuli-responsive polymer networks in aqueous media is fundamental for many material and environmental science applications, including drug delivery, biosensing, catalysis, nanofiltration, water purification, and desalination. The transport is particularly complex in dense polymer media, such as collapsed hydrogels, where the molecules strongly interact with the polymer network and diffuse via a hopping mechanism. In this study, we employ Dynamical Density Functional Theory (DDFT) to investigate the non-equilibrium release kinetics of non-ionic subnanometer-sized molecules initially uploaded inside collapsed microgel particles. The theory is consistent with previous molecular dynamics simulations of collapsed poly($N$-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) polymer matrices, accommodating molecules of varying shapes and sizes. We found that, despite the intricate physico-chemical properties involved in the released process, the kinetics is predominantly dictated by two material parameters: the diffusion coefficient of the molecules inside the microgel ($D^*$) and the interaction free energy of the molecules with the microgel ($\Delta G$). Our results reveal two distinct limiting regimes: For large, slowly diffusing molecules weakly attracted to the polymer network, the release is primarily driven by diffusion, with a release time that scales as $\tau_{1/2} \sim 1/D^*$. Conversely, for small molecules strongly attracted to the polymer network, the release time is dominated by the interaction, scaling as $\tau_{1/2} \sim \exp(-\Delta G/k_{\textrm{B}} T)$. Our DDFT calculations are directly compared with an analytical equation for the half-release time, demonstrating excellent quantitative agreement. 3. Mobile Health Solutions for Hypertensive Disorders in Pregnancy: Scoping Literature Review

Abstract

BackgroundHypertensive disorders are the most common complications during pregnancy, occurring in 5% to 11% of pregnancies; gestational hypertension and preeclampsia are the leading causes of perinatal and maternal morbidity and mortality, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) where maternal and perinatal mortality ratios are still high. Pregnant women with hypertensive disorders could greatly benefit from mobile health (mHealth) solutions as a novel way to identify and control early symptoms, as shown in an increasing number of publications in the field. Such digital health solutions may overcome access limiting factors and the lack of skilled medical professionals and finances commonly presented in resource-poor environments. ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to conduct a literature review of mHealth solutions used as support in hypertensive disorders during pregnancy, with the objective to identify the most relevant protocols and prototypes that could influence and improve current clinical practice. MethodsA methodological review following a scoping methodology was conducted. Manuscripts published in research journals reporting technical information of mHealth solutions for hypertensive disorders in pregnancy were included, categorizing articles in different groups: Diagnosis and Monitoring, mHealth Decision Support System, Education, and Health Promotion, and seven research questions were posed to study the manuscripts. ResultsThe search in electronic research databases yielded 327 articles. After removing duplicates, 230 articles were selected for screening. Finally, 11 articles met the inclusion criteria, and data were extracted from them. Very positive results in the improvement of maternal health and acceptability of solutions were found, although most of the studies involved a small number of participants, and none were complete clinical studies. Accordingly, none of the reported prototypes were integrated in the different health care systems. Only 4 studies used sensors for physiological measurements, and only 2 used blood pressure sensors despite the importance of this physiological parameter in the control of hypertension. The reported mHealth solutions have great potential to improve clinical practice in areas lacking skilled medical professionals or with a low health care budget, of special relevance in LMIC, although again, no extensive clinical validation has been carried out in these environments. ConclusionsmHealth solutions hold enormous potential to support hypertensive disorders during pregnancy and improve current clinical practice. Although very positive results have been reported in terms of usability and the improvement of maternal health, rigorous complete clinical trials are still necessary to support integration in health care systems. There is a clear need for simple mHealth solutions specifically developed for resource-poor environments that meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG); of enormous interest in LMIC.

Abstract

This paper addresses pandemic statistics from a management perspective. Both input and output are easy to understand. Focus is on operations and cross border communication. To be able to work with simple available data some new missing data issues have to be solved from a mathematical statistical point of view. We illustrate our approach with data from France collected during the recent Covid-19 pandemic. Abstract

In the early days of development of a pandemic there is no time for complicated data collection. One needs a simple cross-country benchmark approach based on robust data that is easy to understand and easy to collect. The recent pandemic has shown us what early available pandemic data might look like, because statistical data was published every day in standard news outlets in many countries. This paper provides new methodology for the analysis data where exposure is only vaguely understood and where the very definition of exposure might change over time. The exposure of poor quality is used to analyse and forecast events. Our example of such exposure is daily infections during a pandemic and the events are number of new infected patients in hospitals every day. Abstract

Abstract: Aim: To determine the relationships between the functional trait composition of forest communities and environmental gradients across scales and biomes and the role of species relative abundances in these relationships. Location: Global. Time period: Recent. Major taxa studied: Trees. Methods: We integrated species abundance records from worldwide forest inventories and associated functional traits (wood density, specific leaf area and seed mass) to obtain a data set of 99,953 to 149,285 plots (depending on the trait) spanning all forested continents. We computed community‐weighted and unweighted means of trait values for each plot and related them to three broad environmental gradients and their interactions (energy availability, precipitation and soil properties) at two scales (global and biomes). Results: Our models explained up to 60% of the variance in trait distribution. At global scale, the energy gradient had the strongest influence on traits. However, within‐biome models revealed different relationships among biomes. Notably, the functional composition of tropical forests was more influenced by precipitation and soil properties than energy availability, whereas temperate forests showed the opposite pattern. Depending on the trait studied, response to gradients was more variable and proportionally weaker in boreal forests. Community unweighted means were better predicted than weighted means for almost all models. Main conclusions: Worldwide, trees require a large amount of energy (following latitude) to produce dense wood and seeds, while leaves with large surface to weight ratios are concentrated in temperate forests. However, patterns of functional composition within‐biome differ from global patterns due to biome specificities such as the presence of conifers or unique combinations of climatic and soil properties. We recommend assessing the sensitivity of tree functional traits to environmental changes in their geographic context. Furthermore, at a given site, the distribution of tree functional traits appears to be driven more by species presence than species abundance.

Abstract

This paper develops detailed mathematical statistical theory of a new class of cross-validation techniques of local linear kernel hazards and their multiplicative bias corrections. The new class of cross-validation combines principles of local information and recent advances in indirect cross-validation. A few applications of cross-validating multiplicative kernel hazard estimation do exist in the literature. However, detailed mathematical statistical theory and small sample performance are introduced via this paper and further upgraded to our new class of best one-sided cross-validation. Best one-sided cross-validation turns out to have excellent performance in its practical illustrations, in its small sample performance and in its mathematical statistical theoretical performance.

Abstract

Smooth backfitting has proven to have a number of theoretical and practical advantages in structured regression. Smooth backfitting projects the data down onto the structured space of interest providing a direct link between data and estimator. This paper introduces the ideas of smooth backfitting to survival analysis in a proportional hazard model, where we assume an underlying conditional hazard with multiplicative components. We develop asymptotic theory for the estimator and we use the smooth backfitter in a practical application, where we extend recent advances of in-sample forecasting methodology by allowing more information to be incorporated, while still obeying the structured requirements of in-sample forecasting.

24. Role of Gonadal Steroid Hormones in the Eye: Therapeutic Implications.

Abstract

Gonadal steroid hormones are critical regulatory substances involved in various developmental and physiological processes from fetal development through adulthood. These hormones, derived from cholesterol, are synthesized primarily by the gonads, adrenal cortex, and placenta. The synthesis of these hormones involves a series of enzymatic steps starting in the mitochondria and includes enzymes such as cytochrome P450 and aromatase. Beyond their genomic actions, which involve altering gene transcription over hours, gonadal steroids also exhibit rapid, nongenomic effects through receptors located on the cell membrane. Additionally, recent research has highlighted the role of these hormones in the central nervous system (CNS). However, the interactions between gonadal steroid hormones and the retina have received limited attention, though it has been suggested that they may play a protective role in retinal diseases. This review explores the synthesis of gonadal hormones, their mechanisms of action, and their potential implications in various retinal and optic nerve diseases, such as glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy (DR), or retinitis pigmentosa (RP), discussing both protective and risk factors associated with hormone levels and their therapeutic potential. Length-biased data are a particular case of weighted data, which arise in many situations: biomedicine, quality control or epidemiology among others. In this paper we study the theoretical properties of kernel density estimation in the context of length-biased data, proposing two consistent bootstrap methods that we use for bandwidth selection. Apart from the bootstrap bandwidth selectors we suggest a rule-of-thumb. These bandwidth selection proposals are compared with a least-squares cross-validation method. Abstract

The general objective of the research was to analyze the development of cultural identity through Guayasamín's work, "La Capilla del Hombre". The method used in the research was based on a qualitative approach, supported by the collection and analysis of a documentary-bibliographic typology. This made it possible to organize an analysis of the object of study. A phenomenon that manifests itself in the subjective sphere of reality was taken into consideration. It is concluded that Guayasamin's work is a reservoir of culture and identity. It constitutes a means of recognition and defense of the indigenous Ecuadorian, discriminated against over time. Through his brush, the artist conveys the reality he has lived through and draws attention to the need to understand it, to be in solidarity with it and to transform it; his art is presented as a synthesis of various characteristic aspects of Ecuador, El objetivo general de la investigación fue analizar el desarrollo de la identidad cultural mediante la obra de Guayasamín, “La Capilla del Hombre”. El método empleado en la investigación se basó en el enfoque cualitativo, apoyado en la recolección y análisis de una tipología documental-bibliográfica, lo cual permitió organizar un análisis del objeto de estudio. Se tomó en consideración un fenómeno que se manifiesta en la esfera subjetiva de la realidad. Se concluye que, la obra de Guayasamín es un reservorio de cultura e identidad. Constituye un medio de reconocimiento y de defensa del indígena ecuatoriano, discriminado a lo largo del tiempo. Trasmite el artista, a través de su pincel, la realidad que le tocó vivir y llama la atención sobre la necesidad de comprenderla, solidarizarse con ella y transformarla; su arte se presenta como una síntesis de diversos aspectos característicos del Ecuador.

Abstract

The general objective of the research was to analyze the teaching excursion and its educational implications. The research was conducted from a quantitative perspective through the retrieval, collection and analysis of documentary and bibliographic references. In this sense, the researchers used a documentary-type bibliographic design to carry out a research process in which the study population is mainly based on written documents such as refereed papers, standards and laws, as well as taking into account the content analysis of the information collected. The inductive-deductive approach was also employed. A questionnaire was applied to 26 students of the first level of the Law Degree, UNIANDES, Ibarra, Ecuador, in the Hybrid Modality, academic period May-September 2023. It is concluded that the teaching excursion, whether face-to-face or virtual, is an appropriate educational strategy for the study of cultural values representative of the locality, El objetivo general de la investigación fue analizar la excursión docente y sus implicaciones educativas. La investigación se llevó a cabo desde una perspectiva cuantitativa mediante la recuperación, recopilación y análisis de referencias documentales y bibliográficas. En este sentido, los investigadores utilizaron un diseño bibliográfico de tipo documental para llevar a cabo un proceso de investigación en el que la población de estudio se basa principalmente en documentos escritos como trabajos arbitrados, normas y leyes, además de tener en cuenta el análisis del contenido de la información recopilada. Igualmente, se empleó el enfoque inductivo-deductivo. Se aplicó un cuestionario a 26 estudiantes de Primer nivel de la Carrera de Derecho, UNIANDES, Ibarra, Ecuador, en la Modalidad Híbrida, período académico mayo–septiembre de 2023. Se concluye que, la excursión docente, ya sea de manera presencial o virtual, constituye una estrategia educativa adecuada para el estudio de valores culturales representativos de la localidad.

Abstract

The emergence of alternative stable states in forest systems has significant implications for the functioning and structure of the terrestrial biosphere, yet empirical evidence remains scarce. Here, we combine global forest biodiversity observations and simulations to test for alternative stable states in the presence of evergreen and deciduous forest types. We reveal a bimodal distribution of forest leaf types across temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere that cannot be explained by the environment alone, suggesting signatures of alternative forest states. Moreover, we empirically demonstrate the existence of positive feedbacks in tree growth, recruitment and mortality, with trees having 4–43% higher growth rates, 14–17% higher survival rates and 4–7 times higher recruitment rates when they are surrounded by trees of their own leaf type. Simulations show that the observed positive feedbacks are necessary and sufficient to generate alternative forest states, which also lead to dependency on history (hysteresis) during ecosystem transition from evergreen to deciduous forests and vice versa. We identify hotspots of bistable forest types in evergreen-deciduous ecotones, which are likely driven by soil-related positive feedbacks. These findings are integral to predicting the distribution of forest biomes, and aid to our understanding of biodiversity, carbon turnover, and terrestrial climate feedbacks.

Abstract

Modelling the first-order intensity function is one of the main aims in point process theory. An appropriate model describes the first-order intensity as a nonparametric function of spatial covariates. A formal testing procedure is presented to assess the goodness-of-fit of this model, assuming an inhomogeneous Poisson point process. The test is based on a quadratic distance between two kernel intensity estimators. The asymptotic normality of the test statistic is proved and a bootstrap procedure to approximate its distribution is suggested. The proposal is illustrated with two applications to real data sets, and an extensive simulation study to evaluate its finite-sample performance.

Abstract

Aim: To determine the relationships between the functional trait composition of forest communities and environmental gradients across scales and biomes and the role of species relative abundances in these relationships. Location: Global. Time period: Recent. Major taxa studied: Trees. Methods: We integrated species abundance records from worldwide forest inventories and associated functional traits (wood density, specific leaf area and seed mass) to obtain a data set of 99,953 to 149,285 plots (depending on the trait) spanning all forested continents. We computed community-weighted and unweighted means of trait values for each plot and related them to three broad environmental gradients and their interactions (energy availability, precipitation and soil properties) at two scales (global and biomes). Results: Our models explained up to 60% of the variance in trait distribution. At global scale, the energy gradient had the strongest influence on traits. However, within-biome models revealed different relationships among biomes. Notably, the functional composition of tropical forests was more influenced by precipitation and soil properties than energy availability, whereas temperate forests showed the opposite pattern. Depending on the trait studied, response to gradients was more variable and proportionally weaker in boreal forests. Community unweighted means were better predicted than weighted means for almost all models. Main conclusions: Worldwide, trees require a large amount of energy (following latitude) to produce dense wood and seeds, while leaves with large surface to weight ratios are concentrated in temperate forests. However, patterns of functional composition within-biome differ from global patterns due to biome specificities such as the presence of conifers or unique combinations of climatic and soil properties. Abstract

Introduction: Integrating genetic data into conservation management decisions is a challenging task that requires strong partnerships between researchers and managers. Conservation in Latin America is of crucial relevance worldwide given the high biodiversity levels and the presence of hotspots in this region. Methods: We conducted a survey across Latin America to identify gaps and opportunities between genetic researchers and conservation managers. We aimed to better understand conservation managers' points of view and how genetic research could help conservation practitioners to achieve their goals, by implementing genetic assessments that could effectively inform conservation practices. We distributed an online survey via four regional collaborating organizations and 32 focal points based in 20 Latin American countries. The target respondents were conservation managers of species or areas in Latin America. Results: We collected a total of 468 answered questionnaires from 21 Latin American countries. Most respondents (44%) were from an academic or research institution while non-academics were mainly from non-governmental institutions (30%) and government agencies (25%). Most respondents (65%) have performed or used genetic assessments in their managed area or species, either alone, in partnership, contracting someone else or using published results. For the majority of this group, the genetic results were relevant to their conservation management goals, helping to inform management decisions. Respondents that had not performed genetic assessments (35%) were mainly from the non-academic group, and their main barriers were limited access to funds, genetic lab facilities, and trained personnel to design studies and conduct lab work. Discussion: From the findings, we describe the current situation and provide a general diagnosis of the conservation-genetics gap in Latin America. We describe the gender gap, academic-practitioner co-development of conservation questions and projects, and the nationality and residency of Latin American conservation managers in relation to the countries where they work. We discuss opportunities to co-create research questions and co-develop studies based on conservation practitioners' needs. We offer recommendations for overcoming barriers to integrate genetic information into conservation actions, and advance agendas that fit the needs and realities of the highly heterogeneous, biodiverse and challenging Latin American region. Abstract

(1) Gender-based dating violence is common among adolescents. This violence has global repercussions and can have immediate and delayed consequences on health. Also, cases of dating violence and sexual abuse using technology are increasing. The aim of this research is to describe and understand the perceptions and experiences of Spanish university students aged 18 to 22, about gender-based dating violence and its perpetuation through social media. (2) A qualitative descriptive study was used, following the five consolidated criteria for reporting and publishing COREQ qualitative research. (3) The inductive analysis of the data obtained in the focus group session and the individual interviews of the twelve participants was organised into three major themes: the concept of gender violence that Spanish youth have, the education they have received on gender-based violence and whether they consider that social media are a way to exercise this type of violence. (4) Spanish youth have a broad vision of the attitudes and behaviours that make up gender-based dating violence in an affective relationship. The education received at home is of vital importance for young people, but not all receive it. Social media are frequent tools through which many young people perpetuate controlling partner violence and normalise aspects and situations of gender violence, making it necessary to stress them in prevention programs.
