Most cities in India do not have water distribution networks that provide water throughout the entire day. As a result, it is common for homes and apartment buildings to utilize water storage systems that are filled during a small window of time in the day when the water distribution network is active. However, these water storage systems do not have disinfection capabilities, and so long durations of storage (i.e., as few as four days) of the same water leads to substantial increases in the amount of bacteria and viruses in that water. This paper considers the stochastic control problem of deciding how much water to store each day in the system, as well as deciding when to completely empty the water system, in order to tradeoff: the financial costs of the water, the health costs implicit in long durations of storing the same water, the potential for a shortfall in the quantity of stored versus demanded water, and water wastage from emptying the system. To solve this problem, we develop a new Binary Dynamic Search (BiDS) algorithm that is able to use binary search in one dimension to compute the value function of stochastic optimal control problems with controlled resets to a single state and with constraints on the maximum time span in between resets of the system.

Background: Natural orifice translumenal endoscopic surgery (NOTES) has moved quickly from preclinical investigation to clinical implementation. However, several major technical problems limit clinical NOTES including safe access, retraction and dissection of the gallbladder, and clipping of key structures. This study aimed to identify challenges and develop solutions for NOTES during the initial clinical experience. Methods: Under an Institutional Review Board (IRB)-approved protocol, patients consented to a natural orifice operation for removal of either the gallbladder or the appendix via either the vagina or the stomach using a single umbilical trocar for safety and assistance. Results: Nine transvaginal cholecystectomies, one transgastric appendectomy, and one transvaginal appendectomy have been completed to date. All but one patient were discharged on postoperative day 1 as per protocol. No complications occurred. Conclusion: The limited initial evidence from this study demonstrates that NOTES is feasible and safe. The addition of an umbilical trocar is a bridge allowing safe performance of NOTES procedures until better instruments become available. The addition of a flexible long grasper through the vagina and a flexible operating platform through the stomach has enabled the performance of NOTES in a safe and easily reproducible manner. The use of a uterine manipulator has facilitated visualization of the cul de sac in women with a uterus to allow for safe transvaginal access. © The Author(s) 2009.

Many multi-agent systems have a single coordinator providing incentives to a large number of agents. Two challenges faced by the coordinator are a finite budget from which to allocate incentives, and an initial lack of knowledge about the utility function of the agents. Here, we present a behavioral analytics approach for solving the coordinator's problem when the agents make decisions by maximizing utility functions that depend on prior system states, inputs, and other parameters that are initially unknown. Our behavioral analytics framework involves three steps: first, we develop a model that describes the decision-making process of an agent; second, we use data to estimate the model parameters for each agent and predict their future decisions; and third, we use these predictions to optimize a set of incentives that will be provided to each agent. The framework and approaches we propose in this paper can then adapt incentives as new information is collected. Furthermore, we prove that the incentives computed by this approach are asymptotically optimal with respect to a loss function that describes the coordinator's objective. We optimize incentives with a decomposition scheme, where each sub-problem solves the coordinator's problem for a single agent, and the master problem is a pure integer program. We conclude with a simulation study to evaluate the effectiveness of our approach for designing a personalized weight loss program. The results show that our approach maintains efficacy of the program while reducing its costs by up to 60%, while adaptive heuristics provide substantially less savings.

Bariatric surgery (BS) can have negative effects on bone health. Bone microarchitecture quality evaluation using the trabecular bone score (TBS) has not been described in patients after sleeve gastrectomy (SG). To test the hypothesis that the TBS is clinically useful for this population, we evaluated changes in bone mineral density (BMD) and the TBS in a longitudinal cohort study following SG. The measurements before surgery and after 12 and 24 postoperative months were as follows: weight, height, BMI, waist circumference (WC), BMD and TBS. The results at baseline showed the following: a mean BMI of 43 ± 0.56, TBS of 1.25 ± 0.02, lumbar spine BMD T-score of -0.4 ± 0.93, TBS T-score of -2.30 ± 0.21, significantly lower than BMD-T-score, and associated with a BMD-T-TBS-T gap (T-gap) of -2.05 ± 1.26 (-0.24 ± 0.13). One year after surgery, the TBS had significantly improved (+12.12% ± 1.5), leading to a T-gap of -0.296 ± 0.14, which remained stable at 2 years post-surgery. A correlation analysis revealed a significant negative correlation between the T-gap and WC (r = -0.43 p = 0.004). Our interpretation is that abdominal fat may interfere with image acquisition via increased tissue thickness, leading to a false low TBS at baseline. In conclusion, TBS should be interpreted with caution in patients with obesity and elevated WC. Additionally, we show that after SG, the LS microarchitecture measured using the TBS is partially degraded in up to 25% of patients. Further studies are warranted to assess hip bone microarchitecture changes after bariatric surgery.

Hypercontractile esophagus with concomitant esophagogastric junction outflow obstruction (EGJOO) is a rare entity that is characterized by both esophageal hypercontractility and lack of relaxation of the EGJ. The clinical characteristics of these patients are not well-described and there is no strict recommendation regarding the treatment of this condition. We report four cases of patients with hypercontractile esophagus and concomitant to EGJOO. All patients underwent upper gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy, high-resolution esophageal manometry (HRM) and barium swallow and met the criteria of Chicago Classification for both EGJOO and hypercontractile esophagus. Patients were followed up to four years from diagnosis and clinical symptoms were recorded. Four patients, who underwent evaluation for dysphagia, were found to have both EGJOO and hypercontractile esophagus on HRM. Two of them had mild symptoms and did not undergo treatment with no progression of symptoms on follow-up. Of the two patients who underwent treatment, one had botulinum toxin injection to the EGJ via upper GI endoscopy and one underwent per-oral endoscopic myotomy. Symptoms in both patients improved. Patients with concomitant hypercontractile esophagus and EGJOO present with varying degrees of symptoms and the treatment approach should be personalized according to the degree of symptoms and general clinical condition., (© 2022. Penetrating abdominal injury is a major cause of death in trauma. Sodium alginate hydrogel, a hemostatic agent, offers a platform for targeting both mechanical and biological injuries. The current study assessed the effect of Very Low Viscosity (high) G (VLVG) alginate following abdominal trauma in a swine model of penetrating abdominal injury. Seven anesthetized pigs were instrumented with invasive monitoring catheters and abdominal trauma was introduced by laparoscopic hepatectomy. Ten minutes after the induction of hypovolemic shock, three animals were intra-abdominally administered with VLVG alginate (study group) and four animals with saline (control group). During 8 h of continuous monitoring, various hemodynamic and biochemical variables were measured and liver biopsies for histological evaluation were taken. Hemodynamically, VLVG alginate-treated animals were more stable than controls, as reflected by their lower heart rate and higher blood pressure (p < 0.05 for both). They also had lower levels of liver enzymes and lactate, and less histopathological damage. We show that VLVG alginate might be a promising new agent for reducing penetrating intra-abdominal injury, with hemostatic and biocompatibility efficiency, and tissue preserving properties. Future effort of integrating it with a dispersal device may turn it into a valuable pre-hospital emergency tool to improve survival of trauma casualties., (© 2022. The Author(s).)

Designing systems with human agents is difficult because it often requires models that characterize agents' responses to changes in the system's states and inputs. An example of this scenario occurs when designing treatments for obesity. While weight loss interventions through increasing physical activity and modifying diet have found success in reducing individuals' weight, such programs are difficult to maintain over long periods of time due to lack of patient adherence. A promising approach to increase adherence is through the personalization of treatments to each patient. In this paper, we make a contribution towards treatment personalization by developing a framework for predictive modeling using utility functions that depend upon both time-varying system states and motivational states evolving according to some modeled process corresponding to qualitative social science models of behavior change. Computing the predictive model requires solving a bilevel program, which we reformulate as a mixed-integer linear program (MILP). This reformulation provides the first (to our knowledge) formulation for Bayesian inference that uses empirical histograms as prior distributions. We study the predictive ability of our framework using a data set from a weight loss intervention, and our predictive model is validated by comparison to standard machine learning approaches. We conclude by describing how our predictive model could be used for optimization, unlike standard machine learning approaches which cannot.

Despite the vast number of mobile fitness applications (apps) and their potential advantages in promoting physical activity, many existing apps lack behavior-change features and are not able to maintain behavior change motivation. This paper describes a novel fitness app called CalFit, which implements important behavior-change features like dynamic goal setting and self-monitoring. CalFit uses a reinforcement learning algorithm to generate personalized daily step goals that are challenging but attainable. We conducted the Mobile Student Activity Reinforcement (mSTAR) study with 13 college students to evaluate the efficacy of the CalFit app. The control group (receiving goals of 10,000 steps/day) had a decrease in daily step count of 1,520 (SD ± 740) between baseline and 10-weeks, compared to an increase of 700 (SD ± 830) in the intervention group (receiving personalized step goals). The difference in daily steps between the two groups was 2,220, with a statistically significant p = 0.039.

Bariatric surgery (BS) is an effective treatment for morbid obesity and its associated comorbidities. Following such a procedure, however, patients are at risk of developing metabolic bone disease owing to the combination of rapid weight loss, severely restricted dietary intake, and reduced intestinal nutrient absorption. Patients undergoing malabsorptive procedures are at a higher risk of postoperative bone health deterioration than those undergoing restrictive procedures; however, studies have demonstrated negative skeletal consequences of restrictive procedures as well. The clinical practice guidelines of some international associations have previously addressed preoperative evaluation and postoperative clinical care in order to maintain bone health in BS patients. Nevertheless, some issues regarding bone health in BS patients remain unclear owing to the lack of relevant randomized clinical trials, including doses of nutritional supplements pre- and post-BS. This review summarizes the current data regarding the skeletal consequences of BS and its mechanisms, with an emphasis on the preventive strategies and nutritional care that may be warranted in order to attenuate bone deterioration following BS.

Background: Growing evidence shows that fixed, nonpersonalized daily step goals can discourage individuals, resulting in unchanged or even reduced physical activity., Objective: The aim of this randomized controlled trial (RCT) was to evaluate the efficacy of an automated mobile phone-based personalized and adaptive goal-setting intervention using machine learning as compared with an active control with steady daily step goals of 10,000., Methods: In this 10-week RCT, 64 participants were recruited via email announcements and were required to attend an initial in-person session. The participants were randomized into either the intervention or active control group with a one-to-one ratio after a run-in period for data collection. A study-developed mobile phone app (which delivers daily step goals using push notifications and allows real-time physical activity monitoring) was installed on each participant's mobile phone, and participants were asked to keep their phone in a pocket throughout the entire day. Through the app, the intervention group received fully automated adaptively personalized daily step goals, and the control group received constant step goals of 10,000 steps per day. Daily step count was objectively measured by the study-developed mobile phone app., Results: The mean (SD) age of participants was 41.1 (11.3) years, and 83% (53/64) of participants were female. The baseline demographics between the 2 groups were similar (P>.05). Participants in the intervention group (n=34) had a decrease in mean (SD) daily step count of 390 (490) steps between run-in and 10 weeks, compared with a decrease of 1350 (420) steps among control participants (n=30; P=.03). The net difference in daily steps between the groups was 960 steps (95% CI 90-1830 steps). We review the results from the most common animal models of arterial aneurysm, including recent findings from our novel, laparoscopy-based pig model of abdominal aortic aneurysm, that contribute important insights into early pathogenesis. We emphasize the relevance of these findings for evaluation of treatment protocols and novel device prototypes for mechanism-based prevention of progression and rupture.

Background: Explosion injuries to the upper extremity have specific clinical characteristics that differ from injuries due to other mechanisms., Objectives: To evaluate the upper extremity injury pattern of attacks on civilian targets, comparing bomb explosion injuries to gunshot injuries and their functional recovery using standard outcome measures., Methods: Of 157 patients admitted to the hospital between 2000 and 2004, 72 (46%) sustained explosion injuries and 85 (54%) gunshot injuries. The trauma registry files were reviewed and the patients completed the DASH Questionnaire (Disabilities of Arm, Shoulder and Hand) and SF-12 (Short Form-12) after a minimum period of 1 year., Results: Of the 157 patients, 72 (46%) had blast injuries and 85 (54%) had shooting injuries. The blast casualties had higher Injury Severity Scores (47% vs. 22% with a score of > 16, P = 0.02) and higher percent of patients treated in intensive care units (47% vs. 28%, P = 0.02). Although the Abbreviated Injury Scale score of the upper extremity injury was similar in the two groups, the blast casualties were found to have more bilateral and complex soft tissue injuries and were treated surgically more often. No difference was found in the SF-12 or DASH scores between the groups at follow up., Conclusions: The casualties with upper extremity blast injuries were more severely injured and sustained more bilateral and complex soft tissue injuries to the upper extremity. However, the rating of the local injury to the isolated limb is similar, as was the subjective functional recovery.

Background: Due to high prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and increasing popularity of bariatric and metabolic operations, Surgeons are faced with patients with relatively more severe T2DM disease. High level of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) is widely considered as a marker for uncontrolled T2DM. The aim of this study was to explore the correlation between high level of pre-operative HbA1c, peri-operative morbidity and post operative outcome after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy., Methods: We conducted a retrospective study based on our medical center metabolic and bariatric registry. The inclusion criteria for selecting patients to the study group was HbA1c of 9 gram/dL and higher. A comparison control study was designed to include T2DM patients similar in all characteristics except for HbA1c of 7.5 gram/dl and less., Results: We included 20 patients who underwent laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. Each group of patients included half of the patients. The mean pre operative HbA1c in the studied and the control group were 10.4 gram/dL and 7.1 gram/dL respectively (p<0.001). There were no differences in peri-operative morbidity and length of stay at the hospital. Mean excess weight loss, fasting glucose levels and HbA1c levels were similar six months post surgery mean., Conclusions: According to our study we have not found correlation between high HbA1c levels and increased peri-operative morbidity or insufficient excess weight loss among patients who underwent laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy., (Copyright © 2013 Surgical Associates Ltd. Background and Objectives: Laparoscopic partial nephrectomy (LPN) is a challenging surgery that requires precise tissue cutting and meticulous hemostasis under warm ischemia conditions. In this study, we tested the feasibility of performing LPN using CO2 laser energy transmitted through a specialized flexible mirror optical fiber., Methods: General anesthesia and pneumoperitoneum were induced in 7 farm pigs. Various portions of a kidney, either a pole or a midportion of the kidney, were removed using a novel flexible fiber to transmit CO2 laser energy set at a power of 45W and energy per pulse of 100mJ. The collecting system was approximated with a suture or 2, but no hemostatic measures were taken besides applying a few pulses of the laser to bleeding points. The pigs were sacrificed 3 wk later., Results: Average renal mass removed was 18% of the total kidney weight. All pigs tolerated surgery well. Sharp renal cutting was accomplished in a single continuous incision, with minimal tissue charring and minimal blood loss (<10cc) in all animals. Necropsy revealed no peritoneal or retroperitoneal abnormalities. Histologic examination of the cut surface showed a thin sector of up to 100 m of coagulation necrosis., Conclusions: We report on the first LPN done using a CO2 laser transmitted through a flexible fiber in an animal model. This novel application of the CO2 laser produced excellent parenchymal incision and hemostasis along with minimal damage to adjacent renal tissue, thus, potentially shortening ischemia time and kidney function loss. Further studies comparing this laser to standard technique are necessary to verify its usefulness for partial nephrectomy.

Fibro-muscular dysplasia (FMD) is a rare but well documented disease with multiple arterial aneurysms. The patients, usually women, present with various clinical manifestations according to the specific arteries that are affected. Typical findings are aneurysmatic dilatations of medium-sized arteries. The renal and the internal carotid arteries are most frequently affected, but other anatomical sites might be affected too. The typical angiographic picture is that of a "string of beads". Common histological features are additionally described. Here we present a case of a 47-year-old woman, who was hospitalized due to intractable abdominal pain. A routine work-up revealed a liver mass near the portal vein. Before a definite diagnosis was reached, the patient developed massive upper gastrointestinal bleeding. In order to control the hemorrhage, celiac angiography was performed revealing features of FMD in several arteries, including large aneurysms of the hepatic artery. Active bleeding from one of these aneurysms into the biliary tree indicated selective embolization of the hepatic artery. The immediate results were satisfactory, and the 5 years follow-up revealed absence of any clinical symptoms.

Background: Non-operative management of blunt splenic trauma is the preferred option in hemodynamically stable patients., Objectives: To identify predictors for the successful non-operative management of patients with blunt splenic trauma., Methods: The study group comprised consecutive patients admitted with the diagnosis of blunt splenic trauma to the Department of Surgery, Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Center in Jerusalem over a 3 year period. Prospectively recorded were hemodynamic status, computed tomography grade of splenic tear, presence and extent of extra-abdominal injury, number of red blood cell units transfused, and outcome. Hemodynamic instability and the severity of associated injuries were used to determine the need for splenectomy. Hemodynamically stable patients without an indication for laparotomy were admitted to the Intensive Care Unit and monitored., Results: There were 64 adults (45 males, mean age 30.2 years) who met the inclusion criteria. On univariate analysis the 13 patients (20.3%) who underwent immediate splenectomy were more likely to have lower admission systolic blood pressure (P= 0.001), Glasgow Coma Scale < 8 (P= 0.02), and injury to at least three extra-abdominal regions (P= 0.06). Nine of the 52 patients (17.3%) who were successfully treated non-operatively suffered from grade > or = 4 splenic tear. Multivariate analysis identified admission systolic BP (odds ratio 1.04) and associated injury to less than three extra-abdominal regions (OD 8.03) as predictors for the success of non-operative management, while the need for blood transfusion was a strong predictor (OR 66.67) for splenectomy., Conclusions: Admission systolic blood pressure and limited extra-abdominal injury can be used to identify patients with blunt splenic trauma who do not require splenectomy and can be safely monitored outside an ICU environment.

Objective: To report the distribution and types of injuries in victims of suicide bombing attacks and to identify external signs that would guide triage and initial management., Summary Background Data: There is a need for information on the degree to which external injuries indicate internal injuries requiring emergency triage., Methods: The medical charts and the trauma registry database of all patients who were admitted to the Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem from August 2001 to August 2004 following a suicide bombing attack were reviewed and analyzed for injury characteristics, number of body areas injured, presence of blast lung injury (BLI), and need for therapeutic laparotomy. Logistic analysis was performed to identify predictors of BLI and intra-abdominal injury., Results: The study population consisted of 154 patients who were injured as a result of 17 attacks. Twenty-eight patients suffered from BLI (18.2%) and 13 patients (8.4%) underwent therapeutic laparotomy. Patients with penetrating head injury and those with > or =4 body areas injured were significantly more likely to suffer from BLI (odds ratio, 3.47 and 4.12, respectively, P < 0.05). Patients with penetrating torso injury and those with > or =4 body areas injured were significantly more likely to suffer from intra-abdominal injury (odds ratio, 22.27 and 4.89, respectively, P < 0.05)., Conclusion: Easily recognizable external signs of trauma can be used to predict the occurrence of BLI and intra-abdominal injury. The importance of these signs needs to be incorporated into triage protocols and used to direct victims to the appropriate level of care both from the scene and in the hospital.

Over the past four years there have been 93 multiple-casualty terrorist attacks in Israel, 33 of them in Jerusalem. The Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Center is the only Level I trauma center in Jerusalem and has therefore gained important experience in caring for critically injured patients. To do so we have developed a highly flexible operational system for managing the general intensive care unit (GICU). The focus of this review will be on the organizational steps needed to provide operational flexibility, emphasizing the importance of forward deployment of intensive care unit personnel to the trauma bay and emergency room and the existence of a chain of command to limit chaos. A retrospective review of the hospital's response to multiple-casualty terror incidents occurring between 1 October 2000 and 1 September 2004 was performed. Information was assembled from the medical center's trauma registry and from GICU patient admission and discharge records. Patients are described with regard to the severity and type of injury. The organizational work within intensive care is described. Finally, specific issues related to the diagnosis and management of lung, brain, orthopedic and abdominal injuries, caused by bomb blast events associated with shrapnel, are described. This review emphasizes the importance of a multidisciplinary team approach in caring for these patients.

Aim: To evaluate the positive predictive value of abdominal non-prepared computed tomography (CT) for diagnosing intestinal lumen or wall lesions in patients presenting to the emergency room (ER) with abdominal complaints., Methods: For 1-year we prospectively evaluated all ER patients hospitalized after abdominal CT scan detected either intraluminal or intestinal wall lesions. These patients underwent colonoscopy serving as gold standard. Patients with prior abdominal pathology or CT findings of appendicitis or diverticulitis were excluded., Results: Five hundred and sixty-eight abdominopelvic CT scans were performed in the ER, 96 had positive colonic findings. Sixty-two patients were excluded, 46 because of diverticulitis or appendicitis, 16 because of prior abdominal pathology. Of the remaining 34 patients, 14 did not undergo colonoscopy during hospitalization. Twenty eligible patients were included in the study. The positive predictive value of the CT scans performed in the ER was calculated to be 45% (95% CI 25-67)., Conclusion: CT findings correlated with colonoscopic findings only in approximately half of the cases. Relying on non-prepared CT scan findings in planning patient management and colonoscopy may lead to unnecessary diagnostic work-ups.

Unlabelled: In a 28-mo period 14 multiple-casualty terror events occurred in Jerusalem, challenging the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine of the city's sole Level 1 trauma center. We performed a retrospective review of the response of the department to evaluate staff activities, resource use (emergency department, operating rooms, and intensive care unit [ICU]), and patient flow. A total of 1062 people were injured in the 14 multi-casualty terror incidents. The emergency department treated 355 victims; 108 of them were hospitalized, and 58 underwent surgery during the first 8 h. Only two surgeries were performed during the first hour, and the average time to the first surgery was 124 min. Fifty-one patients were admitted to the ICU an average of 5.5 h after the terror event. After a terrorist act, multiple, simultaneous efforts were required of the anesthesiology department, including taking part in the initial resuscitation in the emergency department, anesthetizing victims for surgery and angiographies, and caring for them in the recovery room and ICU. Therefore, anesthesiology departments are greatly impacted by such events and must plan for them to maximize the use of available personnel and to have the appropriate equipment and supplies available., Implications: Anesthesiologists provide essential care to patients injured in terror events, from the initial resuscitation through therapeutic/diagnostic procedures and surgeries. Operational issues faced by a department of anesthesiology during the initial 8 h after terrorist actions were examined. Multiple, and often parallel, efforts were required of the department.

Objective: To review the experience of a large-volume trauma center in managing and treating casualties of suicide bombing attacks., Summary Background Data: The threat of suicide bombing attacks has escalated worldwide. The ability of the suicide bomber to deliver a relatively large explosive load accompanied by heavy shrapnel to the proximity of his or her victims has caused devastating effects., Methods: The authors reviewed and analyzed the experience obtained in treating victims of suicide bombings at the level I trauma center of the Hadassah University Hospital in Jerusalem, Israel from 2000 to 2003., Results: Evacuation is usually rapid due to the urban setting of these attacks. Numerous casualties are brought into the emergency department over a short period. The setting in which the device is detonated has implications on the type of injuries sustained by survivors. The injuries sustained by victims of suicide bombing attacks in semi-confined spaces are characterized by the degree and extent of widespread tissue damage and include multiple penetrating wounds of varying severity and location, blast injury, and burns., Conclusions: The approach to victims of suicide bombings is based on the guidelines for trauma management. Attention is given to the moderately injured, as these patients may harbor immediate life-threatening injuries. The concept of damage control can be modified to include rapid packing of multiple soft-tissue entry sites. Optimal utilization of manpower and resources is achieved by recruiting all available personnel, adopting a predetermined plan, and a centrally coordinated approach. Suicide bombing attacks seriously challenge the most experienced medical facilities.

Background: During a period of 13 months--1 October 2000 to 31 October 2001--586 terror assault casualties were treated in the trauma unit and emergency department of Hadassah University Hospital (Ein Kerem campus); 27% (n = 158) were hospitalized and the rest were discharged within 24 hours., Objectives: To analyze the special requirements of a large number of victims who received treatment during a short period., Methods: Data were attained from the main admitting office and the trauma registry records. Factors analyzed included age, gender, mechanism of injury, anatomic site of injury, Injury Severity Score, and length of stay., Results: Males comprised 81% of the hospitalized patients. The majority of the injuries (70%) were due to gunshot wounds and 31% of the hospitalized patients were severely injured (ISS > or = 16). Twelve patients died, yielding a mortality rate of 7.5%., Conclusion: The nature of the injuries was more complex and severe than trauma of other etiologies, as noted by the mean length of stay (10.2 vs. 7.2 days), mean intensive care unit stay (2.8 vs. 0.9 days), and mean operations per patient (0.7 vs. 0.5). The mean insurance cost for each hospitalized terror casualty was also higher than for other trauma etiologies (US$ 3,200 vs. 2,500).
