Abstract

In this study, we investigate the flow around a canonical blunt body, specifically a D-shaped body of width $D$, in a closed water channel. Our goal is to explore near-wake flow modifications when a series of rigid and flexible plates ($l=1.8D$) divided into filaments ($h=0.2D$) are added. We focus on assessing the interaction between the flexible filaments and the wake dynamics, with the aim of reducing the recirculation bubble and decreasing the velocity deficit in the wake. To achieve this, we conduct a comparative study varying the stiffness and position of the filaments at different flow velocities. The study combines Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) measurements in the wake behind the body with recordings of the deformation of the flexible filaments. Our observations show that the flexible filaments can passively reconfigure in a two-dimensional fashion, with a mean tip deflection angle that increases with the incoming flow velocity. Deflection angles up to approximately $\sim 9^\circ$ and vibration tip amplitude of around $\sim 4^\circ$ are achieved for flow velocities $U^{*}\simeq f_{n}D/u_{\infty}\geq 1.77$, where $f_n$ is the natural frequency of the flexible filaments. This reconfiguration results in a reduction of the recirculation bubble and a decrease in the velocity deficit in the wake compared to the reference and rigid cases. In addition, curved filaments with a prescribed rigid deformation exhibit very similar behavior to that of flexible filaments, indicating that the vibration of flexible filaments does not significantly disturb the wake. Abstract

We propose analog counterdiabatic quantum computing (ACQC) to tackle combinatorial optimization problems on neutral-atom quantum processors. While these devices allow for the use of hundreds of qubits, adiabatic quantum computing struggles with non-adiabatic errors, which are inevitable due to the hardware's restricted coherence time. We design counterdiabatic protocols to circumvent those limitations via ACQC on analog quantum devices with ground-Rydberg qubits. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our paradigm, we experimentally apply it to the maximum independent set (MIS) problem with up to 100 qubits and show an enhancement in the approximation ratio with a short evolution time. Abstract

We propose digital-analog quantum kernels for enhancing the detection of complex features in the classification of images. We consider multipartite-entangled analog blocks, stemming from native Ising interactions in neutral-atom quantum processors, and individual operations as digital steps to implement the protocol. To further improving the detection of complex features, we apply multiple quantum kernels by varying the qubit connectivity according to the hardware constraints. An architecture that combines non-trainable quantum kernels and standard convolutional neural networks is used to classify realistic medical images, from breast cancer and pneumonia diseases, with a significantly reduced number of parameters. Despite this fact, the model exhibits better performance than its classical counterparts and achieves comparable metrics according to public benchmarks. These findings demonstrate the relevance of digital-analog encoding, paving the way for surpassing classical models in image recognition approaching us to quantum-advantage regimes., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

Epitaxial growth of WTe$_2$ offers significant advantages, including the production of high-qualityfilms, possible long range in-plane ordering and precise control over layer thicknesses. However,the mean island size of WTe$_2$ grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) in litterature is only a fewtens of nanometers, which is not suitable for an implementation of devices at large lateral scales.Here we report the growth of Td-WTe$_2$ ultrathin films by MBE on monolayer (ML) graphenereaching a mean flake size of $\cong$110nm, which is, on overage, more than three time larger thanprevious results. WTe$_2$ films thicker than 5nm have been successfully synthesized and exhibit theexpected Td-phase atomic structure. We rationalize epitaxial growth of Td-WTe$_2$ and propose asimple model to estimate the mean flake size as a function of growth parameters that can be appliedto other transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs). Based on nucleation theory and Kolmogorov-Johnson-Meh-Avrami (KJMA) equation, our analytical model supports experimental data showinga critical coverage of 0.13ML above which WTe$_2$ nucleation becomes negligible. Abstract

In this work, we explore LLM's internal representation space to identify attention heads that contain the most truthful and accurate information. We further developed the Inference Time Intervention (ITI) framework, which lets bias LLM without the need for fine-tuning. The improvement manifests in introducing a non-linear multi-token probing and multi-token intervention: Non-Linear ITI (NL-ITI), which significantly enhances performance on evaluation benchmarks. NL-ITI is tested on diverse multiple-choice datasets, including TruthfulQA, on which we report over 16% relative MC1 (accuracy of model pointing to the correct answer) improvement with respect to the baseline ITI results. Moreover, we achieved a 10% relative improvement over the recently released Truth Forest (TrFf) method that also focused on ITI improvement., Comment: Accepted on Interspeech 2024 Conference. Abstract

We present a novel small molecule antiviral chemotype that was identified by an unconventional cell-free protein synthesis and assembly-based phenotypic screen for modulation of viral capsid assembly. Activity of PAV-431, a representative compound from the series, has been validated against infectious viruses in multiple cell culture models for all six families of viruses causing most respiratory diseases in humans. In animals, this chemotype has been demonstrated efficacious for porcine epidemic diarrhoea virus (a coronavirus) and respiratory syncytial virus (a paramyxovirus). PAV-431 is shown to bind to the protein 14-3-3, a known allosteric modulator. However, it only appears to target the small subset of 14-3-3 which is present in a dynamic multi-protein complex whose components include proteins implicated in viral life cycles and in innate immunity. The composition of this target multi-protein complex appears to be modified upon viral infection and largely restored by PAV-431 treatment. An advanced analog, PAV-104, is shown to be selective for the virally modified target, thereby avoiding host toxicity. Our findings suggest a new paradigm for understanding, and drugging, the host-virus interface, which leads to a new clinical therapeutic strategy for treatment of respiratory viral disease.

9. A viral assembly inhibitor blocks SARS-CoV-2 replication in airway epithelial cells.

Abstract

The ongoing evolution of SARS-CoV-2 to evade vaccines and therapeutics underlines the need for innovative therapies with high genetic barriers to resistance. Therefore, there is pronounced interest in identifying new pharmacological targets in the SARS-CoV-2 viral life cycle. The small molecule PAV-104, identified through a cell-free protein synthesis and assembly screen, was recently shown to target host protein assembly machinery in a manner specific to viral assembly. In this study, we investigate the capacity of PAV-104 to inhibit SARS-CoV-2 replication in human airway epithelial cells (AECs). We show that PAV-104 inhibits >99% of infection with diverse SARS-CoV-2 variants in immortalized AECs, and in primary human AECs cultured at the air-liquid interface (ALI) to represent the lung microenvironment in vivo. Our data demonstrate that PAV-104 inhibits SARS-CoV-2 production without affecting viral entry, mRNA transcription, or protein synthesis. PAV-104 interacts with SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid (N) and interferes with its oligomerization, blocking particle assembly. Transcriptomic analysis reveals that PAV-104 reverses SARS-CoV-2 induction of the type-I interferon response and the maturation of nucleoprotein signaling pathway known to support coronavirus replication. Our findings suggest that PAV-104 is a promising therapeutic candidate for COVID-19 with a mechanism of action that is distinct from existing clinical management approaches.

Abstract

Hydrogen-rich materials offer a compelling avenue towards room temperature superconductivity, albeit under ultra-high pressure. However, the experimental investigation of the electronic band structure remains elusive, due to the inherent instability of most of the hydrogen-rich materials upon pressure release. Very recently, nitrogen-doped lutetium hydride was claimed to host room temperature superconductivity under near ambient pressure but was disproven by following works. Upon decompression, nitrogen doped lutetium hydride manifests a stable metallic phase with dark blue color. Moreover, high temperature superconductivity has been reported in lutetium hydrides Lu4H23 (~71 K) under around 200 GPa. These properties engender an unprecedented opportunity, allowing for the experimental investigation of the electronic band structure intrinsic to hydrogen-rich material. In this work, using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy to investigate the non-superconducting nitrogen doped lutetium hydride, we observed significant flat band and Van Hove singularity marginally below the Fermi level. These salient features, identified as critical elements, proffer potential amplifiers for the realization of heightened superconductivity, as evidenced by prior research. Our results not only unveil a confluence of potent strong correlation effects and anisotropy within the Lu-H-N compound, but also provide a prospect for engineering high temperature superconductivity through the strategic manipulation of flat band and the VHS, effectively tailoring their alignment with the Fermi energy., Comment: 26 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

The study of moir\'e engineering started with the advent of van der Waals heterostructures in which stacking two-dimensional layers with different lattice constants leads to a moir\'e pattern controlling their electronic properties. The field entered a new era when it was found that adjusting the twist between two graphene layers led to strongly-correlated-electron physics and topological effects associated with atomic relaxation. Twist is now used routinely to adjust the properties of two-dimensional materials. Here, we investigate a new type of moir\'e superlattice in bilayer graphene when one layer is biaxially strained with respect to the other - so-called biaxial heterostrain. Scanning tunneling microscopy measurements uncover spiraling electronic states associated with a novel symmetry-breaking atomic reconstruction at small biaxial heterostrain. Atomistic calculations using experimental parameters as inputs reveal that a giant atomic swirl forms around regions of aligned stacking to reduce the mechanical energy of the bilayer. Tight-binding calculations performed on the relaxed structure show that the observed electronic states decorate spiraling domain wall solitons as required by topology. This study establishes biaxial heterostrain as an important parameter to be harnessed for the next step of moir\'e engineering in van der Waals multilayers.

19. Atomic resolution interface structure and vertical current injection in highly uniform $MoS_{2}$ heterojunctions with bulk GaN

Abstract

The integration of two-dimensional $MoS_{2}$ with $GaN$ recently attracted significant interest for future electronic/optoelectronic applications. However, the reported studies have been mainly carried out using heteroepitaxial $GaN$ templates on sapphire substrates, whereas the growth of $MoS_{2}$ on low-dislocation-density bulk GaN can be strategic for the realization of truly vertical devices. In this paper, we report the growth of ultrathin $MoS_{2}$ films, mostly composed by single-layers ($1L$), onto homoepitaxial $n-GaN$ on $n^{+}$ bulk substrates by sulfurization of a pre-deposited $MoO_{x}$ film. Highly uniform and conformal coverage of the $GaN$ surface was demonstrated by atomic force microscopy, while very low tensile strain (0.05%) and a significant $p^{+}$-type doping ($4.5 \times 10^{12} cm^{-2}$) of $1L-MoS_{2}$ was evaluated by Raman mapping. Atomic resolution structural and compositional analyses by aberration-corrected electron microscopy revealed a nearly-ideal van der Waals interface between $MoS_{2}$ and the $Ga$-terminated $GaN$ crystal, where only the topmost $Ga$ atoms are affected by oxidation. Furthermore, the relevant lattice parameters of the $MoS_{2}/GaN$ heterojunction, such as the van der Waals gap, were measured with high precision. Finally, the vertical current injection across this 2D/3D heterojunction has been investigated by nanoscale current-voltage analyses performed by conductive atomic force microscopy, showing a rectifying behavior with an average turn-on voltage $V_{on}=1.7 V$ under forward bias, consistent with the expected band alignment at the interface between $p^{+}$ doped $1L-MoS_{2}$ and $n-GaN$., Comment: 21 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

Two structurally unrelated small molecule chemotypes, represented by compounds PAV-617 and PAV-951, with antiviral activity in cell culture against Mpox virus (formerly known as monkeypox virus) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) respectively, were studied for anti-cancer efficacy. Each exhibited apparent pan-cancer cytotoxicity with reasonable pharmacokinetics. Non-toxicity is demonstrated in a non-cancer cell line and in mice at doses achieving drug exposure at active concentrations. Anti-tumour properties of both chemotypes were validated in mouse xenografts against A549 human lung cancer and, for one of the chemotypes, against HT-29 colorectal cancer. The targets of these compounds are unconventional: each binds to a different transient, energy-dependent multi-protein complex. Treatment with these compounds alters the target multi-protein complexes in a manner that appears to remove a block, crucial for cancer survival and progression, on a homeostatic linkage between uncontrolled proliferation and apoptosis. These compounds provide starting points for development of novel, next-generation, non-toxic, pan-cancer therapeutics.

ABSTRACT: Background: Current studies have examined the efficacy of opioid-sparing analgesics primarily in adult surgical populations, while fewer guide pediatric postoperative pain treatment. Caffeine exerts most of its biological effects by binding to adenosine receptors, which are important for modifying pain and inflammation. Caffeine's ability to modulate pain following posterior spinal fusion (PSF) for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) has not been previously assessed. Methods: The hospital investigational drug study (IDS) pharmacy provided either a treatment dose or placebo dose of caffeine to be given to the patient and was also in charge of randomization for the study. Results: There were 24 patients in the caffeine group (mean 14.3±1.5 years, 91.7% female) and 27 in the control group (mean 14.8±1.4 years, 88.9% female). Postoperative opioid usage was lower in the caffeine cohort for POD 1 (18.6 MME vs. 21.6 MME; p=.19), but this difference was not statistically significant. Opioid usage decreased in the caffeine study group for POD 1 (caffeine: 0.35 MME/kg vs. 0.4 MME/kg; p=.19) and mean daily total opioid usage over the hospital stay (caffeine: 0.32 MME/kg vs. 0.37 MME/kg; p=1), but these differences were not statistically significant. The caffeine study group demonstrated a mean reduction in total opioid consumption over the hospital stay of 5 MME. Conclusions: Oral caffeine use resulted in an average reduction of 5 MME opioid consumption, equivalent to 5 mg of hydrocodone. While this trial was underpowered to definitively assess the outcome, oral caffeine shows potential as an adjunct medication for opioid stewardship in AIS patients. This trial's reported mean total oral opioid consumption range of 0.83 to 0.92 MME/kg is lower than the amounts typically observed in clinical trials. This finding could indicate a successful strategy in reducing opioid use, which aligns with current medical efforts for opioid stewardship.

The cornea acts as the eye foremost protective layer and is essential for its focusing power. Corneal blindness may arise from physical trauma or conditions like dystrophies, keratitis, keratoconus, or ulceration. While conventional treatments involve medical therapies and donor allografts—sometimes supplemented with keratoprostheses—these options are not suitable for all corneal defects. Consequently, the development of bioartificial corneal tissue has emerged as a critical research area, aiming to address the global shortage of human cornea donors. Bioengineered corneas hold considerable promise as substitutes, with the potential to replace either specific layers or the entire thickness of damaged corneas. This review first delves into the structural anatomy of the human cornea, identifying key attributes necessary for successful corneal tissue bioengineering. It then examines various corneal pathologies, current treatments, and their limitations. Finally, the review outlines the primary approaches in corneal tissue engineering, exploring cell-free, cell-based, and scaffold-based options as three emerging strategies to address corneal failure.

Abstract

DOI: https://doi.org/10.26333/sts.xxxvii2.03 Kazimierz Twardowski elaborated an original conception of intentionality in his habilitation thesis, On the Content and Object of Presentations, in 1894. He gives a crucial place to the notion of content, as the basis of any presentation. This allows him to offer a solution to the problem of objectless presentations. But I will focus here on a property he attributes to content, that is, its ability to convey meaning. Outside the proper scope of philosophy of language, he provides a conception of meaning that does not focus on reference but rather on designation. His theory does not account for the Fregean distinction between sense and reference, so I will propose a comparison between the two philosophers’ conceptions of meaning.

State-of-the-art systems for spatial and immersive audio are typically very costly, being reliant on specialist audio hardware capable of performing computationally intensive signal processing and delivering output to many tens, if not hundreds, of loudspeakers. Centralised systems of this sort suffer from limited accessibility due to their inflexibility and expense. Building on the research of the past few decades in the transmission of audio data over computer networks, and the emergence in recent years of increasingly capable, low-cost microcontroller-based development platforms with support for both networking and audio functionality, we present a prototype decentralised, modular alternative. Having previously explored the feasibility of running a microcontroller device as a networked audio client, here we describe the development of a client-server system with improved scalability via multicast data transmission. The system operates on ubiquitous, commonplace computing and networking equipment, with a view to it being a simple, versatile, and highly-accessible platform, capable of granting users the freedom to explore audio spatialisation approaches at vastly reduced expense. Though faced by significant technical challenges, particularly with regard to maintaining synchronicity between distributed audio processors, the system produces perceptually plausible results. Findings are commensurate with a capability, with further development and research, to disrupt and democratise the fields of spatial and immersive audio.

Abstract

Reproductive mode, i.e., the proportion of individuals produced by clonality, selfing and outcrossing in populations, determines how hereditary material is transmitted through generations. It shapes genetic diversity and its structure over time and space, which can be used to infer reproductive modes. Ludwigia grandiflora subsp. hexapetala (Lgh) is a partially clonal, polyploid, hermaphroditic, and heteromorphic plant that recently colonized multiple countries worldwide. In western Europe, individuals are either self-incompatible caused by a late-acting self-incompatibility (LSI) system developing long-styled flowers, or self-compatible (SC), with short-styled flowers. In this study, we genotyped 53 long- and short-styled populations newly colonizing France and northern Spain using SNPs to estimate rates of clonality, selfing and outcrossing. We found that populations reproduced mainly clonally but with a high diversity of genotypes along with rates of sexuality ranging from 10% up to 40%. We also found evidence for local admixture between long- and short-styled populations in a background of genetic structure between floral morphs that was twice the level found within morphs. Long- and short-styled populations showed similar rates of clonality, but short-styled populations presented significantly higher rates of selfing, as expected considering their breeding system and despite the small rates of failure of the LSI system. Within the 53 studied populations, the 13 short-styled populations had fewer effective alleles, lower observed heterozygosity, and higher inbreeding coefficients, linkage disequilibrium and estimates of selfing than what was found in long-styled populations. These results emphasize the necessity to consider the variation of reproductive modes when managing invasive plant species. The overall maintenance of higher genetic diversity with the possibility of maintaining populations clonally in the absence of compatible partners may explain why long-styled individuals seem to be more prevalent in all newly expanding populations worldwide. Beyond Lgh, our methodological approach may inspire future studies to assess the reproductive modes in other autopolyploid populations.

A recent measure was developed to assess the Quality of Life (QoL) of young people with advanced cancer and is available for parents and professionals (Advance QoL). The present study aimed to elaborate self-reported versions for children and adolescents with advanced cancer. We adopted a four-phase research plan: (1) to elaborate the Advance QoL questionnaire for youth (8–12 and 13–18 years old) with a team of young research partners; (2) to evaluate the understandability of these versions in a sample of 12 young patients from the target population using cognitive interviews; (3) to assess social validity in the same group using a questionnaire and the content validity index (CVI); and (4) to refine the questionnaires according to these results. Four major themes were identified: (1) issues affecting the understanding of the tool; (2) issues that did not affect the understanding of the tool; (3) modifications to improve the tool; and (4) positive features of the tool. Advance QoL was well received, and feedback was positive. Adjustments were made according to young people’s comments and two self-reported versions are now available. It is essential to measure the key domains of QoL in advanced cancer. Advance QoL self-report versions will help target the specific needs of young people with this condition and their families.

Abstract

This paper explores the interplay of Henri Lefebvre’s conceived, perceived, and lived spaces in the Real Convento de Santa Mónica, a nunnery located at the heart of the Portuguese Asian empire, in Goa, India. The sense of harmony produced by the conceived and perceived spaces, frameworks that produced a particular habitus among the nuns, which in turn facilitated congenial lived spaces that aligned with the nuns’ aspirations, was significantly disrupted by an external authority, the Archbishop of Goa Ignácio de Santa Teresa, in the early eighteenth century. The archbishop’s desire to curb the power of the Orders and elevate the local Goan ecclesiastical institutions had an unintended effect: it introduced a state of disharmony into the lived space of the nuns, and thus the dialectic between habitus and space led many nuns to experience the convent not as a place of calm and refuge, but rather as a prison. Abstract

Materials tuned to a quantum critical point display universal scaling properties as a function of temperature $T$ and frequency $\omega$. A long-standing puzzle regarding cuprate superconductors has been the observed power-law dependence of optical conductivity with an exponent smaller than one, in contrast to $T$-linear dependence of the resistivity and $\omega$-linear dependence of the optical scattering rate. Here, we present and analyze resistivity and optical conductivity of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ with $x=0.24$. We demonstrate $\hbar\omega/k_{\mathrm{B}} T$ scaling of the optical data over a wide range of frequency and temperature, $T$-linear resistivity, and optical effective mass proportional to $\sim \ln T$ corroborating previous specific heat experiments. We show that a $T,\omega$-linear scaling Ansatz for the inelastic scattering rate leads to a unified theoretical description of the experimental data, including the power-law of the optical conductivity. Abstract

Graphene, consisting of an inert, thermally stable material with an atomically flat, dangling bond-free surface is by essence an ideal template layer for van der Waals heteroepitaxy of two-dimensional materials such as silicene. However, depending on the synthesis method and growth parameters, graphene (Gr) substrates could exhibit, on a single sample, various surface structures, thicknesses, defects, and step heights. These structures noticeably affect the growth mode of epitaxial layers, e.g. turning the layer-by-layer growth into the Volmer-Weber growth promoted by defect-assisted nucleation. In this work, the growth of silicon on chemical vapor deposited epitaxial Gr (1 ML Gr/1ML Gr buffer) on 6H-SiC(0001) substrate is investigated by a combination of atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Raman spectroscopy measurements. It is shown that the perfect control of full-scale almost defect-free 1 ML Gr with a single surface structure and the ultra-clean conditions for molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) deposition of silicon represent key prerequisites for ensuring the growth of extended silicene sheets on epitaxial graphene.

The frustrated magnet Nd$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$, where strong correlations together with spin-orbit coupling play a crucial role, is predicted to be a Weyl semimetal and to host topological pairs of bulk Dirac-like valleys. Here we use an external magnetic field to manipulate the localized rare earth 4f moments coupled to the 5d electronic bands. Background and Objectives: According to the International Working Group on Diabetic Foot (IWGDF) risk classification, the estimated risk of developing a diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) is much higher in patients with a history of DFUs (Grade 3) compared to those with a peripheral neuropathy but without a history of DFUs (Grades 1 and 2). It has been suggested that microcirculation impairment is involved in DFU genesis and could be taken into account to refine the existing risk classification. The aim of this study was to evaluate microcirculation parameters in patients with diabetes according to their estimated DFU risk. Materials and Methods: A total of 172 patients with type 2 diabetes associated with a peripheral neuropathy and/or a history of DFUs were included and classified into two groups (Grade 1–2 and Grade 3) according to the IWGDF classification. All patients underwent an evaluation of peripheral neuropathy, plantar sudomotor function, and skin microcirculation parameters. These different parameters were compared between both groups. Results: There was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of age, diabetes duration, transcutaneous oxygen pressure level, skin microcirculatory reactivity, neuropathy disability score, neuropathy symptom score, or thermal sensitivity. Patients in Grade 3 were more likely to present with retinopathy (OR 3.15, 95%CI [1.53; 6.49]) and severe sudomotor dysfunction (OR 2.73 95%CI [1.29; 5.80] but less likely to have abnormal VPT (OR 0.20 95%CI [0.05; 0.80]). Conclusions: The present study found more retinopathy and a more pronounced alteration to sudomotor function in Grade 3 patients, suggesting that these parameters could be considered to better identify patients at high risk of DFUs.

Abstract

In orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based wireless communication systems, the bit error rate (BER) performance is heavily dependent on the accuracy of channel estimation. It is important for a good channel estimator to be capable of handling the changes in the wireless channel conditions that occur due to the mobility of the users. In recent years, the focus has been on developing complex neural network (NN)- based channel estimators that enable an error performance close to that of a genie-aided channel estimator. This work considers the other alternative which is to have a simple channel estimator but a more complex NN-based demapper for the generation of soft information for each transmitted bit. In particular, the problem of reversing the adverse effects of an imperfect channel estimator is addressed, and a convolutional self-attention-based neural demapper that significantly outperforms the baseline is proposed.

Abstract

We present a novel small molecule antiviral chemotype that was identified by an unconventional cell-free protein synthesis and assembly-based phenotypic screen for modulation of viral capsid assembly. Activity of PAV-431, a representative compound from the series, has been validated against infectious viruses in multiple cell culture models for all six families of viruses causing most respiratory diseases in humans. In animals, this chemotype has been demonstrated efficacious for porcine epidemic diarrhoea virus (a coronavirus) and respiratory syncytial virus (a paramyxovirus). PAV-431 is shown to bind to the protein 14-3-3, a known allosteric modulator. However, it only appears to target the small subset of 14-3-3 which is present in a dynamic multi-protein complex whose components include proteins implicated in viral life cycles and in innate immunity. The composition of this target multi-protein complex appears to be modified upon viral infection and largely restored by PAV-431 treatment. An advanced analog, PAV-104, is shown to be selective for the virally modified target, thereby avoiding host toxicity. Our findings suggest a new paradigm for understanding, and drugging, the host–virus interface, which leads to a new clinical therapeutic strategy for treatment of respiratory viral disease.

Abstract

One of the most widely discussed features of the cuprate high Tc superconductors is the presence of a pseudogap in the normal state. Recent transport and specific heat measurements have revealed an abrupt transition at the pseudogap critical point, denoted p*, characterized by a drop in carrier density and a strong mass enhancement. In order to give more details about this transition at p*, we performed low-temperature infrared spectroscopy in the normal state of cuprate superconductors La2-xSrxCuO4 (LSCO) and La1.8-xEu0.2SrxCuO4 (Eu-LSCO) for doping contents across the pseudogap critical point p* (from p = 0.12 to 0.24). Through the complex optical conductivity we can extract the spectral weight, K*, of the narrow Drude peak due the coherent motion of the quasi-particles, and the spectral weight enclosed inside the mid-infrared (MIR) band, KMIR, caused by coupling of the quasi-particles to collective excitations of the many-body system. K* is smaller than a third of the value predicted by band calculations, and KMIR forms a dome as a function of doping. We observe a smooth doping dependence of K* through p*, and demonstrate that this is consistent with the observed doping dependence of the carrier density and the mass enhancement. We argue that the superconducting dome is the result of the confluence of two opposite trends, namely the increase of the density of the quasi-particles and the decrease of their coupling to the collective excitations as a function of doping., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

ABSTRACT There is a lack of knowledge in the literature concerning Body Segment Inertial Parameters (BSIP) for children aged 4 to 15 years. Nevertheless, these data are fundamental for studying the dynamics of the healthy and pathological musculoskeletal system. One common method for obtaining BSIP is to use regression equations derived from anthropometric tables. However, the majority of these equations are based on adult data. In this study, we compared certain BSIP (segment mass, center of mass position, and transverse moment of inertia) derived from adult anthropometric tables with the corresponding BSIP extracted from a pediatric anthropometric table. The goal of this study was to determine the accuracy of using adult anthropometric tables to calculate pediatric BSIP. For this comparison, we assessed the proximity of several adult anthropometric tables to a pediatric anthropometric table by Jensen (1986) for each BSIP. Our results revealed differences between the BSIP obtained using adult tables and the BSIP obtained with the pediatric table used as a reference. When considering all the tables, the mean relative difference was 12% for segment mass, 12% for center of mass position, and 25% for transverse moment of inertia. Notably, the greatest relative differences were observed for the head, hand, and foot segments. Additionally, the relative difference in female data was higher compared to males. This result could be attributed to the predominant use of male subjects in the adult tables considered in this study. Finally, the adult anthropometric tables by Dumas and Wojtsuch (2018) and De Leva (1996) provided results that were closer in comparison to Jensen (1986).

Abstract

Despite the large literature focused on the growth of graphene (Gr) on 6H-SiC(0001) by chemical vapour deposition (CVD), some important issues have not been solved and full wafer scale epitaxy of Gr remains challenging, hampering applications in microelectronics. With this study we shed light on the generic mechanism which produces the coexistence of two different types of Gr domains, whose proportion can be carefully controlled by tuning the H2 flow rate. For the first time, we show that the growth of Gr using CVD under H2/Ar flow rate proceeds in two stages. Firstly, the nucleation of free-standing epitaxial graphene on hydrogen (H-Gr) occurs, then H-atoms eventually desorb from either step edges or defects. This gives rise, for H2 flow rate below a critical value, to the formation of (6x6)Gr domains on 6H-SiC(0001). The front of H-desorption progresses proportionally to the reduction of H2. Using a robust and generic X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis, we realistically quantify the proportions of H-Gr and (6x6)Gr domains of a Gr film synthetized in any experimental conditions. Scanning tunnelling microscopy supports the XPS measurements. From these results we can deduce that the H- assisted CVD growth of Gr developed here is a unique method to grow fully free-standing H-Gr on the contrary to the method consisting of H-intercalation below epitaxial Gr on buffer layer. These results are of crucial importance for future applications of Gr/SiC(0001) in nanoelectronics, providing the groundwork for the use of Gr as an optimal template layer for Van der Waals homo- and hetero-epitaxy.

Abstract

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy is a powerful and versatile sensing method with a detection limit down to the single molecule level. In this article, we demonstrate how topology optimization (TopOpt) can be used for designing surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates adhering to realistic fabrication constraints. As an example, we experimentally demonstrated a SERS enhancement factor of 5*10e4 for the 604 cm-1 Raman line of rhodamine 6G using metal nanostructures with a critical dimension of 20 nm. We then show that, by relaxing the fabrication constraints, TopOpt may be used to design SERS substrates with orders of magnitude larger enhancement factor. The results validate topology optimization as an effective method for engineering nanostructures with optimal performance and fabrication tolerance., Comment: 12 pages

Abstract

Abstract Footshock self-experience enhances rodents’ reactions to the distress of others. Here, we tested one potential mechanism supporting this phenomenon, namely that animals auto-condition to their own pain squeaks during shock pre-exposure. In Experiment 1, shock pre-exposure increased freezing and 22 kHz distress vocalizations while animals listened to the audible pain-squeaks of others. In Experiment 2 and 3, to test the auto-conditioning theory, we weakened the noxious pre-exposure stimulus not to trigger pain squeaks, and compared pre-exposure protocols in which we paired it with squeak playback against unpaired control conditions. Although all animals later showed fear responses to squeak playbacks, these were weaker than following typical pre-exposure (Experiment 1) and not stronger following paired than unpaired pre-exposure. Experiment 1 thus demonstrates the relevance of audible pain squeaks in the transmission of distress but Experiment 2 and 3 highlight the difficulty to test auto-conditioning: stimuli weak enough to decouple pain experience from hearing self-emitted squeaks are too weak to trigger the experience-dependent increase in fear transmission that we aimed to study. Although our results do not contradict the auto-conditioning hypothesis, they fail to disentangle it from sensitization effects. Future studies could temporarily deafen animals during pre-exposure to further test this hypothesis.

Abstract

The integration of graphene (Gr) with nitride semiconductors is highly interesting for applications in high-power/high-frequency electronics and optoelectronics. In this work, we demonstrated the direct growth of Gr on Al0.5Ga0.5N/sapphire templates by propane (C3H8) chemical vapor deposition (CVD) at temperature of 1350{\deg}C. After optimization of the C3H8 flow rate, a uniform and conformal Gr coverage was achieved, which proved beneficial to prevent degradation of AlGaN morphology. X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) revealed Ga loss and partial oxidation of Al in the near-surface AlGaN region. Such chemical modification of a 2 nm thick AlGaN surface region was confirmed by cross-sectional scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) combined with electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), which also showed the presence of a bilayer of Gr with partial sp2/sp3 hybridization. Raman spectra indicated that the deposited Gr is nanocrystalline (with domain size 7 nm) and compressively strained. A Gr sheet resistance of 15.8 kOhm/sq was evaluated by four-point-probe measurements, consistently with the nanocrystalline nature of these films. Furthermore, nanoscale resolution current mapping by conductive atomic force microscopy (C-AFM) indicated local variations of the Gr carrier density at a mesoscopic scale, which can be ascribed to changes in the charge transfer from the substrate due to local oxidation of AlGaN or to the presence of Gr wrinkles., Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

Nd2Ir2O7 is a correlated semimetal with the pyrochlore structure, in which competing spin-orbit coupling and electron-electron interactions are believed to induce a time-reversal symmetry broken Weyl semimetal phase characterized by pairs of topologically protected Dirac points at the Fermi energy. However, the emergent properties in these materials are far from clear, and exotic new states of matter have been conjectured. Here we demonstrate optically that at low temperatures the free carrier spectral weight is proportional to T^2 where T is the temperature, as expected for massless Dirac electrons. However, we do {\em not} observe the corresponding T^3 term in the specific heat. That the system is not in a Fermi liquid state is further corroborated by the "Planckian" T-linear temperature dependence of the momentum relaxation rate and the progressive opening of a correlation-induced gap at low temperatures. These observations can not be reconciled within the framework of band theory of electron-like quasiparticles and point toward the effective decoupling of the charge transport from the single particle sector., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures
