Abstract: Forests that regrow naturally on abandoned fields are important for restoring biodiversity and ecosystem services, but can they also preserve the distinct regional tree floras? Using the floristic composition of 1215 early successional forests (≤20 years) in 75 human-modified landscapes across the Neotropic realm, we identified 14 distinct floristic groups, with a between-group dissimilarity of 0.97. Floristic groups were associated with location, bioregions, soil pH, temperature seasonality, and water availability. Hence, there is large continental-scale variation in the species composition of early successional forests, which is mainly associated with biogeographic and environmental factors but not with human disturbance indicators. This floristic distinctiveness is partially driven by regionally restricted species belonging to widespread genera. Early secondary forests contribute therefore to restoring and conserving the distinctiveness of bioregions across the Neotropical realm, and forest restoration initiatives should use local species to assure that these distinct floras are maintained.

Abstract: Old-growth tropical forests harbor an immense diversity of tree species but are rapidly being cleared, while secondary forests that regrow on abandoned agricultural lands increase in extent. We assess how tree species richness and composition recover during secondary succession across gradients in environmental conditions and anthropogenic disturbance in an unprecedented multisite analysis for the Neotropics. Secondary forests recover remarkably fast in species richness but slowly in species composition. Secondary forests take a median time of five decades to recover the species richness of old-growth forest (80% recovery after 20 years) based on rarefaction analysis. Full recovery of species composition takes centuries (only 34% recovery after 20 years). A dual strategy that maintains both old-growth forests and species-rich secondary forests is therefore crucial for biodiversity conservation in human-modified tropical landscapes.

Abstract: Naturally regenerating forests or secondary forests (SFs) are a promising strategy for restoring large expanses of tropical forests at low cost and with high environmental benefits. This expectation is supported by the high resilience of tropical forests after natural disturbances, yet this resilience can be severely reduced by human impacts. Assessing the characteristics of SFs and their ecological integrity (EI) is essential to evaluating their role for conservation, restoration, and provisioning of ecosystem services. In this study, we aim to propose a concept and indicators that allow the assessment and classification of the EI of SFs. To this end, we review the literature to assess how EI has been addressed in different ecosystems and which indicators of EI are most commonly used for tropical forests. Building upon this knowledge we propose a modification of the concept of EI to embrace SFs and suggest indicators of EI that can be applied to different successional stages or stand ages. Additionally, we relate these indicators to ecosystem service provision in order to support the practical application of the theory. EI is generally defined as the ability of ecosystems to support and maintain composition, structure and function similar to the reference conditions of an undisturbed ecosystem. This definition does not consider the temporal dynamics of recovering ecosystems, such as SFs. Therefore, we suggest incorporation of an optimal successional trajectory as a reference in addition to the old-growth forest reference. The optimal successional trajectory represents the maximum EI that can be attained at each successional stage in a given region and enables the evaluation of EI at any given age class. O objetivo é ajudar os investidores a compreender qual a melhor estratégia para investirem. Além disso, é avaliar o impacto de algumas variáveis no desempenho do portfolio, como o número de meses utilizados na janela de estimação, as restrições de vendas a descoberto e a utilização de métodos distintos de shrinkage. As medidas de avaliação utilizadas são o Sharpe ratio e a regressão de cinco fatores de Fama e French. As principais conclusões são que as vendas a descoberto, a janela de estimação utilizada, e o método de shrinkage, todos têm impacto no desempenho do portfolio. As estratégias com restrições de vendas a descoberto, janela de estimação mais pequena, ou portfolios que utilizaram o método de Ledoit e Wolf (2004), apresentam um desempenho melhor do que as estratégias equivalentes. O portfolio com um Sharpe ratio mais elevado é o de tangência sem vendas a descoberto e com uma janela de estimação de 30 meses. Finally, the long-only tangency outperforms the equally weighted one, however, the long-short tangency portfolio does not outperform the equally weighted strategy. Only the long-short minimum variance portfolios regardless of the shrinkage method used or the estimation window, and the long-short tangency portfolio with an estimation window of 60 months have factors that are statistically significant. For the long-short minimum variance portfolios, the market, the SMB and the RMW factors are all statistically significant for a significance level of 0.1%. The long-short tangency portfolio with an estimation window of 60 months, similar to the strategies mentioned, is impacted by the market factor, but only for 5% significance level. The CMA factor is only statistically significant for the long-short minimum variance portfolio that used the Ledoit and Wolf (2004) shrinkage estimator and for the long-short minimum variance strategy with an estimation window of 60 months and that use Ledoit and Wolf (2020) shrinkage method. For the long-short minimum variance strategies that used Ledoit and Wolf (2020) shrinkage estimator, the HML factor is statistically significant for a significance level of 5%.

These climatic grids do not reflect conditions below vegetation canopies and near the ground surface, where critical ecosystem functions occur and most terrestrial species reside. Here, we provide global maps of soil temperature and bioclimatic variables at a 1-km2 resolution for 0–5 and 5–15 cm soil depth. These maps were created by calculating the difference (i.e. offset) between in situ soil temperature measurements, based on time series from over 1200 1-km2 p ixels ( summarized f rom 8 519 u nique t emperature sensors) across all the world's major terrestrial biomes, and coarse-grained air temperature estimates from ERA5-Land (an atmospheric reanalysis by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts). We show that mean annual soil temperature differs markedly from the corresponding gridded air temperature, by up to 10°C (mean = 3.0 ± 2.1°C), with substantial variation across biomes and seasons. Over the year, soils in cold and/or dry biomes are substantially warmer (+3.6 ± 2.3°C) than gridded air temperature, whereas soils in warm and humid environments are on average slightly cooler (−0.7 ± 2.3°C). The observed substantial and biome-specific offsets emphasize that the projected impacts of climate and climate change on near-surface biodiversity and ecosystem functioning are inaccurately assessed when air rather than soil temperature is used, especially in cold environments. The global soil-related bioclimatic variables provided here are an important step forward for any application in ecology and related disciplines. Abstract: Research in global change ecology relies heavily on global climatic grids derived from estimates of air temperature in open areas at around 2 m above the ground. These climatic grids do not reflect conditions below vegetation canopies and near the ground surface, where critical ecosystem functions occur and most terrestrial species reside. Here, we provide global maps of soil temperature and bioclimatic variables at a 1-km2 resolution for 0–5 and 5–15 cm soil depth. These maps were created by calculating the difference (i.e. offset) between in situ soil temperature measurements, based on time series from over 1200 1-km2 pixels (summarized from 8519 unique temperature sensors) across all the world's major terrestrial biomes, and coarse-grained air temperature estimates from ERA5-Land (an atmospheric reanalysis by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts). We show that mean annual soil temperature differs markedly from the corresponding gridded air temperature, by up to 10°C (mean = 3.0 ± 2.1°C), with substantial variation across biomes and seasons. Over the year, soils in cold and/or dry biomes are substantially warmer (+3.6 ± 2.3°C) than gridded air temperature, whereas soils in warm and humid environments are on average slightly cooler (−0.7 ± 2.3°C). The observed substantial and biome-specific offsets emphasize that the projected impacts of climate and climate change on near-surface biodiversity and ecosystem functioning are inaccurately assessed when air rather than soil temperature is used, especially in cold environments. The global soil-related bioclimatic variables provided here are an important step forward for any application in ecology and related disciplines. Nevertheless, we highlight the need to fill remaining geographic gaps by collecting more in situ measurements of microclimate conditions to further enhance the spatiotemporal resolution of global soil temperature products for ecological applications.

Abstract: Research in global change ecology relies heavily on global climatic grids derived from estimates of air temperature in open areas at around 2 m above the ground. These climatic grids do not reflect conditions below vegetation canopies and near the ground surface, where critical ecosystem functions occur and most terrestrial species reside. Here, we provide global maps of soil temperature and bioclimatic variables at a 1-km2 resolution for 0-5 and 5-15 cm soil depth. These maps were created by calculating the difference (i.e. offset) between in situ soil temperature measurements, based on time series from over 1200 1-km2 pixels (summarized from 8519 unique temperature sensors) across all the world's major terrestrial biomes, and coarse-grained air temperature estimates from ERA5-Land (an atmospheric reanalysis by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts). We show that mean annual soil temperature differs markedly from the corresponding gridded air temperature, by up to 10°C (mean = 3.0 ± 2.1°C), with substantial variation across biomes and seasons. Over the year, soils in cold and/or dry biomes are substantially warmer (+3.6 ± 2.3°C) than gridded air temperature, whereas soils in warm and humid environments are on average slightly cooler (-0.7 ± 2.3°C). The observed substantial and biome-specific offsets emphasize that the projected impacts of climate and climate change on near-surface biodiversity and ecosystem functioning are inaccurately assessed when air rather than soil temperature is used, especially in cold environments. The global soil-related bioclimatic variables provided here are an important step forward for any application in ecology and related disciplines. Nevertheless, we highlight the need to fill remaining geographic gaps by collecting more in situ measurements of microclimate conditions to further enhance the spatiotemporal resolution of global soil temperature products for ecological applications.

Abstract: Forests that regrow naturally on abandoned fields are important for restoring biodiversity and ecosystem services, but can they also preserve the distinct regional tree floras? Using the floristic composition of 1215 early successional forests (≤20 years) in 75 human-modified landscapes across the Neotropic realm, we identified 14 distinct floristic groups, with a between-group dissimilarity of 0.97. Floristic groups were associated with location, bioregions, soil pH, temperature seasonality, and water availability. Hence, there is large continental-scale variation in the species composition of early successional forests, which is mainly associated with biogeographic and environmental factors but not with human disturbance indicators. This floristic distinctiveness is partially driven by regionally restricted species belonging to widespread genera. Early secondary forests contribute therefore to restoring and conserving the distinctiveness of bioregions across the Neotropical realm, and forest restoration initiatives should use local species to assure that these distinct floras are maintained.

Abstract: Research in global change ecology relies heavily on global climatic grids derived from estimates of air temperature in open areas at around 2 m above the ground. These climatic grids do not reflect conditions below vegetation canopies and near the ground surface, where critical ecosystem functions occur and most terrestrial species reside. Here, we provide global maps of soil temperature and bioclimatic variables at a 1-km2 resolution for 0-5 and 5-15 cm soil depth. These maps were created by calculating the difference (i.e. offset) between in situ soil temperature measurements, based on time series from over 1200 1-km2 pixels (summarized from 8519 unique temperature sensors) across all the world's major terrestrial biomes, and coarse-grained air temperature estimates from ERA5-Land (an atmospheric reanalysis by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts). We show that mean annual soil temperature differs markedly from the corresponding gridded air temperature, by up to 10°C (mean = 3.0 ± 2.1°C), with substantial variation across biomes and seasons. Over the year, soils in cold and/or dry biomes are substantially warmer (+3.6 ± 2.3°C) than gridded air temperature, whereas soils in warm and humid environments are on average slightly cooler (-0.7 ± 2.3°C). The observed substantial and biome-specific offsets emphasize that the projected impacts of climate and climate change on near-surface biodiversity and ecosystem functioning are inaccurately assessed when air rather than soil temperature is used, especially in cold environments. The global soil-related bioclimatic variables provided here are an important step forward for any application in ecology and related disciplines. Nevertheless, we highlight the need to fill remaining geographic gaps by collecting more in situ measurements of microclimate conditions to further enhance the spatiotemporal resolution of global soil temperature products for ecological applications.

Abstract: Unidad de excelencia María de Maeztu CEX2019-000940-M, Secondary forests are increasingly important components of human-modified landscapes in the tropics. Successional pathways, however, can vary enormously across and within landscapes, with divergent regrowth rates, vegetation structure and species composition. While climatic and edaphic conditions drive variations across regions, land-use history plays a central role in driving alternative successional pathways within human-modified landscapes. How land use affects succession depends on its intensity, spatial extent, frequency, duration and management practices, and is mediated by a complex combination of mechanisms acting on different ecosystem components and at different spatial and temporal scales. We review the literature aiming to provide a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms underlying the long-lasting effects of land use on tropical forest succession and to discuss its implications for forest restoration. We organize it following a framework based on the hierarchical model of succession and ecological filtering theory. This review shows that our knowledge is mostly derived from studies in Neotropical forests regenerating after abandonment of shifting cultivation or pasture systems. Vegetation is the ecological component assessed most often. Little is known regarding how the recovery of belowground processes and microbiota communities is affected by previous land-use history. In published studies, land-use history has been mostly characterized by type, without discrimination of intensity, extent, duration or frequency. We compile and discuss the metrics used to describe land-use history, aiming to facilitate future studies. Abstract: The Amazon Basin is at the center of an intensifying discourse about deforestation, land-use, and global change. To date, climate research in the Basin has overwhelmingly focused on the cycling and storage of carbon (C) and its implications for global climate. Missing, however, is a more comprehensive consideration of other significant biophysical climate feedbacks [i.e., CH4, N2O, black carbon, biogenic volatile organic compounds (BV0Cs), aerosols, evapotranspiration, and albedo] and their dynamic responses to both localized (fire, land-use change, infrastructure development, and storms) and global (warming, drying, and some related to El Nino or to warming in the tropical Atlantic) changes. Here, we synthesize the current understanding of (1) sources and fluxes of all major forcing agents, (2) the demonstrated or expected impact of global and local changes on each agent, and (3) the nature, extent, and drivers of anthropogenic change in the Basin. We highlight the large uncertainty in flux magnitude and responses, and their corresponding direct and indirect effects on the regional and global climate system. Despite uncertainty in their responses to change, we conclude that current warming from non-CO2 agents (especially CH4 and N2O) in the Amazon Basin largely offsets- and most likely exceeds-the climate service provided by atmospheric CO2 uptake. We also find that the majority of anthropogenic impacts act to increase the radiative forcing potential of the Basin. Abstract: Tropical forests disappear rapidly because of deforestation, yet they have the potential to regrow naturally on abandoned lands. We analyze how 12 forest attributes recover during secondary succession and how their recovery is interrelated using 77 sites across the tropics. Tropical forests are highly resilient to low-intensity land use; after 20 years, forest attributes attain 78% (33 to 100%) of their old-growth values. Recovery to 90% of old-growth values is fastest for soil (<1 decade) and plant functioning (<2.5 decades), intermediate for structure and species diversity (2.5 to 6 decades), and slowest for biomass and species composition (>12 decades). Network analysis shows three independent clusters of attribute recovery, related to structure, species diversity, and species composition. Secondary forests should be embraced as a low-cost, natural solution for ecosystem restoration, climate change mitigation, and biodiversity conservation.

Abstract: Tropical forests are converted at an alarming rate for agricultural use and pastureland, but also regrow naturally through secondary succession. For successful forest restoration, it is essential to understand the mechanisms of secondary succession. These mechanisms may vary across forest types, but analyses across broad spatial scales are lacking. Here, we analyse forest recovery using 1,403 plots that differ in age since agricultural abandonment from 50 sites across the Neotropics. We analyse changes in community composition using species-specific stem wood density (WD), which is a key trait for plant growth, survival and forest carbon storage. In wet forest, succession proceeds from low towards high community WD (acquisitive towards conservative trait values), in line with standard successional theory. However, in dry forest, succession proceeds from high towards low community WD (conservative towards acquisitive trait values), probably because high WD reflects drought tolerance in harsh early successional environments. Dry season intensity drives WD recovery by influencing the start and trajectory of succession, resulting in convergence of the community WD over time as vegetation cover builds up. These ecological insights can be used to improve species selection for reforestation. Reforestation species selected to establish a first protective canopy layer should, among other criteria, ideally have a similar WD to the early successional communities that dominate under the prevailing macroclimatic conditions.

Abstract: Old-growth tropical forests harbor an immense diversity of tree species but are rapidly being cleared, while secondary forests that regrow on abandoned agricultural lands increase in extent. We assess how tree species richness and composition recover during secondary succession across gradients in environmental conditions and anthropogenic disturbance in an unprecedented multisite analysis for the Neotropics. Secondary forests recover remarkably fast in species richness but slowly in species composition. Secondary forests take a median time of five decades to recover the species richness of old-growth forest (80% recovery after 20 years) based on rarefaction analysis. Full recovery of species composition takes centuries (only 34% recovery after 20 years). A dual strategy that maintains both old-growth forests and species-rich secondary forests is therefore crucial for biodiversity conservation in human-modified tropical landscapes.

In wet forests succession proceeds from low to high WD, in dry forests from high to low WD, resulting in convergence of community WD of dry and wet forests over time, as vegetation cover builds up.

Abstract: O histórico de uso do solo é fator determinante da sucessão secundária na Amazônia central, levando ao estabelecimento de comunidades de plantas com estrutura, composição florística, biomassa e dinâmica distintas. A utilização do fogo para renovação de pastagens compromete o potencial regenerativo dessas áreas, que, quando abandonadas, são dominadas pelo gênero Vismia e colonizadas por poucas espécies, resultando em florestas secundárias pouco diversificadas nas quais a sucessão permanece estagnada. Uma vegetação mais rica e dominada pelo gênero Cecropia coloniza áreas com histórico de uso menos intensivo, permitindo o rápido desenvolvimento da sucessão. Embasado nos conhecimentos adquiridos ao longo de duas décadas de estudo, discutimos aspectos práticos relacionados ao potencial e aos custos do manejo da sucessão secundária para a restauração dos serviços ambientais e como forma de aliar a geração de renda à redução do desmatamento na região. O manejo do dossel e os plantios de enriquecimento mostraram-se técnica e economicamente viáveis em capoeiras de Cecropia, mas capoeiras dominadas por Vismia requerem o desenvolvimento de propostas de manejo alternativas para sua restauração. Trabalhos em desenvolvimento pelo Projeto Pioneiras, objetivando investigar as trajetórias sucessionais em regiões distintas da Amazônia e analisar os efeitos das mudanças climáticas sobre as florestas secundárias, são apresentados e discutidos no final.

30. Land use as a filter for species composition in Amazonian secondary forests

Abstract: Questions: Secondary succession in the tropics can follow alternative pathways. Land-use history is known to engender alternative successional communities, but the underlying mechanisms driving and sustaining divergence remain unclear. In this study we aim to answer the following questions: (1) does previous land use act as a filter for species composition in secondary forests; and (2) what are the relative roles of management practices, soil properties and landscape composition in determining species composition?. Location: Central Amazon, Brazil. Methods: We sampled trees, shrubs and palms (≥1cm diameter) in 38 early secondary forests (5 yr after abandonment) located along gradients of land-use intensity in five shifting cultivation landscapes. We measured the diameter and height of each sampled plant, identified it to species or morpho-species level and checked if it was resprouting or not. At each secondary forest we also collected soil samples for chemical and physical analyses and estimated the amount of old-growth forest surrounding it (landscape composition). Results: We found that previous land-use intensity determined species composition. With increasing land-use intensity, management practices of cut-and-burn and associated reduction in soil quality filtered out seed-dependent species and favoured strong sprouters and species that can cope with low nutrient availability. Landscape composition had a weak effect on species assemblages. We found specific species assemblages and indicator species associated with different levels of previous land-use intensity. As a consequence of these local filters, species α- and β-diversity decreased and therefore early successional communities became more similar to each other. Conclusion: Species composition of successional forests is strongly determined by different land-use intensities. Abstract: Regrowth of tropical secondary forests following complete or nearly complete removal of forest vegetation actively stores carbon in aboveground biomass, partially counterbalancing carbon emissions from deforestation, forest degradation, burning of fossil fuels, and other anthropogenic sources. We estimate the age and spatial extent of lowland second-growth forests in the Latin American tropics and model their potential aboveground carbon accumulation over four decades. Our model shows that, in 2008, second-growth forests (1 to 60 years old) covered 2.4 million km2 of land (28.1% of the total study area). Over 40 years, these lands can potentially accumulate a total aboveground carbon stock of 8.48 Pg C (petagrams of carbon) in aboveground biomass via low-cost natural regeneration or assisted regeneration, corresponding to a total CO2 sequestration of 31.09 Pg CO2. This total is equivalent to carbon emissions from fossil fuel use and industrial processes in all of Latin America and the Caribbean from 1993 to 2014. Ten countries account for 95% of this carbon storage potential, led by Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, and Venezuela. We model future land-use scenarios to guide national carbon mitigation policies. Permitting natural regeneration on 40% of lowland pastures potentially stores an additional 2.0 Pg C over 40 years. Our study provides information and maps to guide national-level forest-based carbon mitigation plans on the basis of estimated rates of natural regeneration and pasture abandonment. Coupled with avoided deforestation and sustainable forest management, natural regeneration of second-growth forests provides a low-cost mechanism that yields a high carbon sequestration potential with multiple benefits for biodiversity and ecosystem services.

32. Alternative successional pathways in the Amazon Basin

Abstract: 1 Successional pathways were evaluated in two Amazonian secondary forest communities with different land-use histories. Sites which had been clearcut without subsequent use were dominated after 6-10 years by the pioneer genus Cecropia (Moraceae), whereas those used for pasture before abandonment were dominated by the pioneer genus Vismia (Clusiaceae). 2 There were 58 plant families and 300 species identified in Cecropia stands but only 43 families and 147 species were identified in Vismia stands. There were 77 species in common (Sorensen similarity = 0.34). 3 Differences in species number and composition of recruiting individuals between stand types were significant and were a function of the dominant pioneer genus, stem density, distance from primary forest, and land-use history. Regeneration under Vismia canopy was dominated by small Vistula individuals (25% of plants [is less than] 2 cm basal diameter), whereas regeneration under Cecropia canopy was more diverse and did not include a single young Cecropia. 4 The number of regenerating plants in both secondary stand types dropped off sharply with distance (5, 25, 50, and 100 m) from primary forest, suggesting that seed dispersal was limiting plant recruitment. Species richness also declined with distance and could be explained by the decline in plant density. Species richness in Cecropia stands increased linearly with plant density, but in Vistula stands the richness increase with density was a decelerating function. 5 For the central Amazon, secondary succession involves a more rapid return of primary forest species if deforestation is not followed by use as pasture before abandonment. Abstract: Regardless of its form of management, to achieve its goals the botanical gardens must be supported by management tools that guide the actions to be implemented, and reflect the expectations and needs of its visitors in programs and projects. The study aimed to provide subsidies to guide the management of the Adolpho Ducke Botanical Garden of Manaus, based on the perception, the demands and expectations through a survey of information from the different stakeholders that interact with the Garden, seeking to ensure the effective achievement of its goals, as well as its institutional strengthening, considering its peculiar characteristics and importance in the Amazonian context. The central question of this study is how the Botanical Garden should be administrated in order to meet the expectations and demands of its users. For that, three main goals were established, which can assist in establishing a better management of the Garden. Currently, the document that guides its management is its bylaws, which establishes its mission, objectives and management structure, being a north, yet there is still a lack of an instrument that includes planning for the future. © 2014, Instituto de Pesquisas Jardim Botanico do Rio de Janeiro. 36. Amazon Rain Forest Succession: Stochasticity or Land-Use Legacy?

Abstract: Land-use practices can dramatically shift the trajectories of rain forest recovery. In a 25-year study, Amazon rain forest regenerated following deforestation as long as seed availability and seedling recruitment were not interrupted. In contrast, rain forest converted to cattle pastures via cutting and burning prior to abandonment diverted succession, leading to highly simplified stands dominated by a single genus. Annual fires eliminated seedlings, saplings, coppice, and seeds in the soil, except for several Vismia species. Once established, Vismia regenerated by continual resprouting and resisted the establishment of other rain forest species, especially the normal suite of pioneers. Through time, succession both in abandoned clearcuts and pastures increased in stem density and biomass; however, species accumulation and ecosystem services were limited in pastures when compared with those in abandoned clearcuts. Therefore, prescribed burning to maintain pastureland leaves a legacy that is not readily extinguished, whereas abandoning clearcuts engenders an accelerated rain forest regeneration.

A fundamentação teórica se refere aos temas liderança, cultura organizacional e a Tecnologia Empresarial Odebrecht - TEO, com uma abordagem sobre a importância da liderança, alguns conceitos, principais teorias e características da liderança eficaz. É destacado o modelo da liderança transformacional, de Burns, que é referência no modelo de análise do trabalho. No tema cultura organizacional, é abordado alguns conceitos, modelos e a importância dos líderes nesse tema. É destacado o modelo de Schein, também referência do modelo de análise do trabalho. A metodologia de pesquisa foi survey, através de questionário auto-aplicável, que foi respondido pelos empregados da Organização estudada. O resultado indicou que na percepção dos integrantes, há aceitação do modelo de cultura organizacional adotado, porém a prática das concepções filosóficas e a atuação dos líderes na disseminação dessa cultura, ainda não é visualizada por uma significativa parte dos integrantes. This paper consists of a case study, carried out at Cetrel (Empresa de Proteção Ambiental), located in the Industrial Complex of Camaçari, a town close to the capital of the state of Bahia, Brazil. It aimed to investigate the participants’ perception of organizational culture based on the philosophical conceptions of Odebrecht Entrepreneurial Technology (TEO), the leaders’ role in the dissemination of the principles, concepts and criteria of Odebrecht Entrepreneurial Technology (TEO), and its practice in the corporation. The theoretical basis refers to themes like leadership, organizational culture and the Odebrecht Entrepreneurial Technology (TEO), focusing on the importance of leadership, some concepts, main theories and characteristics of effective leadership. Highlight is given to Burns’s model of transformational leadership, used here as reference in the analysis model. As for organizational culture, some concepts, models and the importance of leaders on this subject are discussed. Schein’s model is also highlighted, being used as reference for the analysis model as well. The research methodology was that of a survey, through a self-administered questionnaire, which was answered by the employees of the above mentioned company. The results showed that according to the participants’ perception, there is acceptance of the adopted model of organizational culture, however the practice of the philosophical conceptions and the leaders’ role in the dissemination of this culture, still have not been seen by a significant part of the participants.

Abstract: Regardless of its form of management, to achieve its goals the botanical gardens must be supported by management tools that guide the actions to be implemented, and reflect the expectations and needs of its visitors in programs and projects. The study aimed to provide subsidies to guide the management of the Adolpho Ducke Botanical Garden of Manaus, based on the perception, the demands and expectations through a survey of information from the different stakeholders that interact with the Garden, seeking to ensure the effective achievement of its goals, as well as its institutional strengthening, considering its peculiar characteristics and importance in the Amazonian context. The central question of this study is how the Botanical Garden should be administrated in order to meet the expectations and demands of its users. For that, three main goals were established, which can assist in establishing a better management of the Garden. Currently, the document that guides its management is its bylaws, which establishes its mission, objectives and management structure, being a north, yet there is still a lack of an instrument that includes planning for the future. 49. Padrões de crescimento diamétrico em comunidades arbóreas com diferentes gradientes de perturbação na Amazônia Central

Abstract: Foram monitoradas bimensalmente cerca de 1.860 árvores com bandas dendrométricas durante um período de dois anos em uma floresta de terra firme na Amazônia Central em três cenários: florestas secundárias (capoeiras), fragmentos florestais e florestas primárias (contínuas). Foram analisados os efeitos das variações intranuais e sazonalidade no incremento diamétrico entre as comunidades, correlacionando-as com as características climáticas (temperatura e precipitação), abertura de dossel, densidade da madeira e composição florística. Foram avaliadas também as diferenças entre os ambientes quanto ao acúmulo de biomassa associada ao incremento diamétrico dos indivíduos. O incremento diamétrico foi maior em capoeiras quando comparado com fragmentos florestais e florestas contínuas. Inversamente, as capoeiras apresentaram o menor acúmulo de biomassa em relação às demais. Essa diferença entre capoeiras e os outros ambientes se deve principalmente aos distintos padrões composicionais entre eles. A densidade da madeira e a composição florística observada em áreas de fragmentos florestais e floresta contínua foram semelhantes enquanto as capoeiras apresentam composição florística diferente com maior número de espécies de baixa densidade da madeira. A influência da abertura de dossel para o incremento foi similar entre os três ambientes e inferimos que a sua importância para os diferentes padrões de crescimento diamétrico foi menor. A semelhança quanto ao incremento diamétrico e acúmulo de biomassa entre fragmentos e florestas contínuas indicam que esses fragmentos mantêm padrões vegetacionais similares à florestas pristinas. A proximidade de florestas contínuas e capacidade de aclimatação das árvores nos ambientes fragmentados estão entre as possíveis explicações para esse resultado. Padrões de precipitação influenciaram positivamente padrões de incremento e biomassa para os três ambientes e foram mais importantes que temperatura, embora ambos não sejam significativos. Possivelmente tendências mais fortes dessas variáveis, principalmente precipitação, seriam observadas caso a série de dados de crescimento fosse superior a dois anos. Sugerimos que mudanças nos regimes de chuva para Amazônia devem ter consequências importantes para o papel do bioma no acúmulo e estoque de carbono. Estes resultados fornecem uma visão inicial detalhada da sensibilidade das árvores em relação às alterações climáticas intranuais em áreas com diferentes históricos de uso e composição florística. Em longo prazo este estudo pode fornecer predições sobre a resposta do crescimento e acúmulo de biomassa em florestas que sofreram algum grau de perturbação em relação a futuros cenários de mudanças climáticas. About 1860 trees with dendrometric bands were monitored bi-monthly for a period of two years in a terra firme forest in Central Amazonia, from three different scenarios: secondary forests (capoeiras), forest fragments and continuous forests. The effects of intrannual variations and seasonality on the diametric growth a among the communities were analyzed, correlating them with climatic characteristics (temperature and precipitation), canopy opening, wood density and floristic composition. The differences between the environments were also evaluated regarding the rate of accumulation of biomass associated with the diametric growth of the individuals. The diametric growth was higher in capoeiras when compared to forest fragments and continuous forests. Conversely, the capoeiras had the lowest rate of accumulation of biomass in relation to the others. This difference between capoeiras and other environments is mainly due to the different compositional patterns between them. The wood density and the floristic composition observed in areas of forest fragments and continuous forest were similar while the capoeiras presented different floristic composition, with higher number of low density wood species. Influence of the canopy opening for the increment was similar between the three environments and therefore we infer that its importance for the different diametric growth patterns was of minor importance. The similarity on tree diametric growth and biomass accumulation between fragments and continuous forests indicates that these fragments maintain vegetative patterns similar to pristine forests. Proximity to continuous forests and tree acclimatization capacity in fragmented environments are amongst the possible explanations for this result. Precipitation patterns positively influenced growth and biomass patterns for the three environments and were more important than temperature, although both were not significant. Possibly stronger trends of these variables, especially precipitation, would be observed if the series of growth data were larger than two years. We therefore suggest that changes in rainfall regimes for the Amazon should have important consequences for the biome's role in the accumulation and stock of carbon. These results provide a detailed initial view of the sensitivity of trees to intra annual climate changes in areas with different degree of atropic disturbance and floristic composition. In the long term, this study can provide predictions about the growth response and biomass accumulation in forests that have undergone some degree of disturbance in relation to future climate change scenarios.

50. Ethos Seringueiro: cenários dos Jovens da Reserva Extrativista Chico Mendes

Abstract: “Reservas Extrativistas” e “Povos e Comunidades Tradicionais” têm sido conceitos utilizados para reconhecer e delinear legalmente modos particulares do “humano” “ser” e “viver” suas relações sociais, culturais, políticas e econômicas num determinado espaço e tempo – considerando a sustentabilidade do ambiente e a “tradicionalidade”. A presente pesquisa aborda esses conceitos na perspectiva de sua natureza cultural; propondo analisar através da reprodução social de duas comunidades de seringueiros a reprodução empírica de um modo “Reserva Extrativista” de uso e ocupação humana. Neste cenário, a pesquisa investiga o ethos de jovens moradores da Reserva Extrativista Chico Mendes, realizando oficinas participativas com alunos do Ensino Médio de duas escolas de comunidades diferentes. Eles foram questionados sobre temas como: os pontos positivos e negativos de se viver numa RESEX, as perspectivas para o futuro de suas colocações, e seus projetos de vida para serem felizes. Os resultados apontaram tendências e cenários para o futuro das comunidades, indicando que apesar de origens e características similares, os jovens das duas comunidades desenvolveram perspectivas distintas. Dentre os fatores influentes estão elementos econômicos ligados a representatividade do extrativismo na composição da renda familiar e processos de mudança cultural que afetam a constituição da visão de mundo dos indivíduos, suas agências e o futuro da Reserva Extrativista Chico Mendes, enquanto territorialidade relacionada a sustentabilidade socioambiental. "Extractive Reserves" and "Traditional Peoples and Communities" have been concepts used to recognize and legally delineate particular "human" ways of "being" and "living" their social, cultural, political and economic relations in a given space and time - environmental sustainability and "tradition". The present research approaches these concepts in the perspective of their cultural nature; proposing to analyze through the social reproduction of two communities of rubber tappers the empirical reproduction of an "Extractive Reserve" mode of human use and occupation. In this scenario, the research investigates the ethos of young residents of the Extractive Reserve Chico Mendes, holding participatory workshops with high school students from two schools of different communities. They were asked about the positive and negative aspects of living in a RESEX, the prospects for the future of their settings, and their life projects to be happy. The results pointed out tendencies and scenarios for the future of that territoriality, indicating that despite their similar origins and characteristics, the youths of the two communities developed different perspectives. Among the influential factors are economic elements linked to the representativeness of extractivism in the composition of family income and processes of cultural change; which affect the constitution of the world view of individuals, their agencies and the future of the Chico Mendes Extractive Reserve as a territoriality related to socio-environmental sustainability.
