Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a major neuronal growth factor, is also known to exert an antiapoptotic effect in myeloma cells. Whereas BDNF secretion was described in B lymphocytes, the ability of B cells to produce sortilin, its transport protein, was not previously reported. We studied BDNF production and the expression of its receptors, tyrosine protein kinase receptor B and p75 neurotrophin receptor in the human pre-B, mature, and plasmacytic malignant B cell lines under normal and stress culture conditions (serum deprivation, Fas activation, or their combination). BDNF secretion was enhanced by serum deprivation and exerted an antiapoptotic effect, as demonstrated by neutralization experiments with antagonistic Ab. The precursor form, pro-BDNF, also secreted by B cells, decreases under stress conditions in contrast to BDNF production. Stress conditions induced the membranous expression of p75 neurotrophin receptor and tyrosine protein kinase receptor B, maximal in mature B cells, contrasting with the sequestration of both receptors in normal culture. By blocking Ab and small interfering RNA, we evidenced that BDNF production and its survival function are depending on sortilin, a protein regulating neurotrophin transport in neurons, which was not previously described in B cells. Therefore, in mature B cell lines, an autocrine BDNF production is up-regulated by stress culture conditions and exerts a modulation of apoptosis through the sortilin pathway. This could be of importance to elucidate certain drug resistances of malignant B cells. In addition, primary B lymphocytes contained sortilin and produced BDNF after mitogenic activation, which suggests that sortilin and BDNF might be implicated in the survival and activation of normal B cells also.

International audience; The objective of this paper is to extend the literature on bank capital buffer by considering the role of bank heterogeneity. Using a sample of European commercial banks over 1992-2006, we show that four key determinants – risk, business cycle, market and peer discipline – have different impact on capital buffer depending on banks' financing mode, activity or size. Our results offer a framework for discussing the appropriateness of the still on-going suggestions on bank capital regulation. Whereas they support the differentiating measures undertaken in Basel 3 such as specific capital surcharges for SIFIs, they disagree with the adoption of uniform countercyclical buffers.

This paper reformulates the finance-growth nexus in the case of developing countries. Using the Neoclassical growth framework, our contribution is threefold. First, we show that entrepreneurship is a growth-enhancing factor in both financial intermediary equilibrium and financial market equilibrium. Second, we show that agent's saving is one of the determinants of the optimal proportion of long-term investment and hence, we characterize the role of bank as financial intermediary. Third, our model is characterized by the existence of multiple steady states equilibrium with threshold effect that impedes the economy to reach a long-run higher steady state equilibrium. Furthermore, we show that financial intermediary is better than financial market, in order to reduce threshold effect and to ensure the long-run steady state equilibrium of capital stock.

International audience; This paper deals with a finite element algorithm for the creep crack growth process in a viscoelastic medium. The main developments focus on the coupling between the M-integral and an incremental formulation for the viscoelastic behavior. In this context, mixed mode configurations are simulated for orthotropic symmetries. An algorithm uncoupling viscoelastic incremental formulation and the fracture procedure is resolved with finite element software. The global approach is validated in terms of the evolution of energy release rate versus time and the advance of cracks. Numerical simulations are based on a Constant Tension Shear model. The insensitivity of the M-integral to the integration domain is shown from creep crack growth simulations for mixed mode configurations.

The oxidation of iodide by synthetic birnessite (delta-MnO(2)) was studied in perchlorate media in the pH range 4-8. Iodine (I(2)) was detected as an oxidation product that was subsequently further oxidized to iodate (IO(3)(-)). The third order rate constants, second order on iodide and first order on manganese oxide, determined by extraction of iodine in benzene decreased with increasing pH (6.3-7.5) from 1790 to 3.1M(-2) s(-1). Both iodine and iodate were found to adsorb significantly on birnessite with an adsorption capacity of 12.7 microM/g for iodate at pH 5.7. The rate of iodine oxidation by birnessite decreased with increasing ionic strength, which resulted in a lower rate of iodate formation. The production of iodine in iodide-containing waters in contact with manganese oxides may result in the formation of undesired iodinated organic compounds (taste and odor, toxicity) in natural and technical systems. The probability of the formation of such compounds is highest in the pH range 5-7.5. For pH5 iodine is quickly oxidized to iodate, a non-toxic and stable sink for iodine. At pH7.5, iodide is not oxidized to a significant extent.

International audience; This paper presents a new incremental formulation in the time domain for linear, non-aging viscoelastic materials undergoing mechanical deformation. The formulation is derived from linear differential equations based on a discrete spectrum representation for the creep tensor. The incremental constitutive equations are then obtained by finite difference integration. Thus the difficulty of retaining the stress history in computer solutions is avoided. A complete general formulation of linear viscoelastic stress analysis is developed in terms of increments of strains and stresses. Numerical results of good accuracy are achieved. The analytical and numerical solutions are compared using the energy release rate in pure mode I and pure mode II.

International audience; Because Pb is one of the most toxic elements and is found as a major contaminant in mining environments, this study aims to identify the distribution of this element in host phases issued from the alteration of mine wastes. The sampling location was a former mine near Oakland, California (USA). This mine was once a source of sulfide minerals from which sulfuric acid was made. The material discussed in this paper was collected in iron hardpans that were formed within the waste rock pile resulting from the excavation work. In most contaminated environments (soils, mine waste), secondary metal-bearing phases arising from alteration processes are usually fine-grained (from 10 microm to less than 1 microm) and highly heterogeneous, requiring the use of micron-scale techniques. We performed micro-Raman spectroscopy, microscanning X-ray diffraction (SXRD), and microextended X-ray near edge spectroscopy (XANES) to determine the relationships between Pb and a Ba/Fe-rich host phase. Micro-Raman spectroscopy suggests that Pb is preferentially incorporated into barite rather than goethite. Results from micro-Raman experiments show the high sensitivity of this analytical tool to the incorporation of Pb into barite by being especially sensitive to the variations of the S-O bond and showing the characteristic bands due to the contribution of Pb. This association is confirmed and is well-illustrated by micro-SXRD mineral species maps showing the correlation between Pb and barite. Microfocused XANES indicates that Pb is present as Pb2+, agreeing with the in situ physicochemical parameters.

This paper deals with a new independent path integral which provides the mixed-mode during a creep crack growth process in viscoelastic orthotropic media. The developments are based on an energetic approach using conservative laws. The mixed-mode fracture separation is introduced according to the generalization of the virtual work principle. The fracture algorithm is implemented in a finite element software and coupled with an incremental viscoelastic formulation and an automatic crack growth simulation. This M-integral provides the computation of stress intensity factors and energy release rate for each fracture mode. A numerical validation, in terms of energy release rate and stress intensity factors, is carried out on a CTS specimen under mixed-mode loading for different crack growth speeds.

Clay-chamotte composites were realized for manufacturing refractory bricks. We used two kaolinitic refractory clays mined in Cameroon and two calcined clays (chamottes) with a large grain size (0.1–4 mm). Clay-chamotte composites containing various quantities of chamotte (0–50 wt%) were shaped and sintered at 1200–1350 °C. The structural characteristics of composites indicated the presence of quartz from the initial clay, cristobalite and mullite. SEM observations revealed very heterogeneous microstructures where porosity is weakly distributed and large pores are entrapped at the vicinity of large chamotte and quartz grains. In general, the global porosity increases with the chamotte content. A specific interpretation of the matrix role on the global sintering behaviour reveals that only a part of the matrix acts effectively. Since the most part of the global porosity is within the matrix, it is distributed in matrix zones, which participate effectively to sintering and in inert matrix zones where larger pores occur. The global mechanical strength is controlled by the matrix behaviour, but the high porosity of this phase is unfavourable to high strength values. Besides, the occurrence of larges pores and local cracks at large grain interfaces from thermal stresses are critical flaws, which reduce the mechanical strength.

International audience; The mobilization of chromium and nickel from an industrial soil was investigated using two biodegradable chelants (citric acid and histidine), compared with a persistent one (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid). Successive metal mobilizations were carried out in batch experiments. The main reactions involved were estimated by modelling the system with MINEQL+. For a single mobilization, citric acid was the most effective for Cr mobilization and EDTA for Ni. Their effectiveness could be explained by their ability to solubilize the mineral matrix and by the competition for the surfaces sites to desorb Cr(VI). Before and after the mobilizations, the distribution of metals was determined by a sequential extraction procedure. Only slight modifications were observed due to the low percentage of solubilized metal. A concentration of 0.05 mol.L-1 (citric acid and EDTA) allows a good compromise between metal mobilization and preservation of the soil mineral integrity

Cellulose-based plastic films were prepared in homogeneous media with a range of lauroyl fatty acid attachments by ester formation, expressed as the degree of substitution (DS). The esters were cast to form films and their mechanical properties studied. This study showed a surprising relationship between DS and elastic modulus as well as DS and tensile strength, where a peak was observed at DS 2.4. The unexpected variation of static elastic modulus (E) was confirmed by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and this trend was also observed for glass transition temperature (Tg). These results are discussed in relation to sample cohesion.
