4. Robust Meta-Reinforcement Learning with Curriculum-Based Task Sampling

Abstract

Meta-reinforcement learning (meta-RL) acquires meta-policies that show good performance for tasks in a wide task distribution. However, conventional meta-RL, which learns meta-policies by randomly sampling tasks, has been reported to show meta-overfitting for certain tasks, especially for easy tasks where an agent can easily get high scores. To reduce effects of the meta-overfitting, we considered meta-RL with curriculum-based task sampling. Our method is Robust Meta Reinforcement Learning with Guided Task Sampling (RMRL-GTS), which is an effective method that restricts task sampling based on scores and epochs. We show that in order to achieve robust meta-RL, it is necessary not only to intensively sample tasks with poor scores, but also to restrict and expand the task regions of the tasks to be sampled.

30. Pseudogap regime of a two-dimensional uniform Fermi gas

Abstract

We investigate pseudogap phenomena in a two-dimensional Fermi gas. Including pairing fluctuations within a self-consistent $T$-matrix approximation, we determine the pseudogap temperature $T^*$ below which a dip appears in the density of states $\rho(\omega)$ around the Fermi level. Evaluating $T^*$, we identify the pseudogap region in the phase diagram of this system. We find that, while the observed BKT (Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless) transition temperature $T^{\rm exp}_{\rm BKT}$ in a $^6$Li Fermi gas is in the pseudogap regime, the detailed pseudogap structure in $\rho(\omega)$ at $T^{\rm exp}_{\rm BKT}$ still differs from a fully-gapped one, indicating the importance of amplitude fluctuations in the Cooper channel there. Since the observed $T^{\rm exp}_{\rm BKT}$ in the weak-coupling regime cannot be explained by the recent BKT theory which only includes phase fluctuations, our results may provide a hint about how to improve this BKT theory. Abstract

Background/Objectives: Abnormalities in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) dynamics cause diverse conditions, such as hydrocephalus, but the underlying mechanism is still unknown. Methods to study CSF dynamics in small animals have not been established due to the lack of an evaluation system. Therefore, the purpose of this research study is to establish the time-spatial labeling inversion pulse (Time-SLIP) MRI technique for the evaluation of CSF dynamics in mice. Methods: We performed the Time-SLIP technique on 10 wild-type mice and 20 Tiptoe-walking Yoshimura (TWY) mice, a mouse model of ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL). We defined the stir distance as the distance of CSF stirring and calculated the mean ± standard deviation. The intraclass correlation coefficient of intraobserver reliability was also calculated. Furthermore, in TWY mice, the correlation coefficient between stir distance and canal stenosis ratio (CSR) was calculated. Results: The stir distance was significantly lower in TWY mice at 12 weeks and 17 weeks of age (1.20 ± 0.16, 1.21 ± 0.06, and 1.21 ± 0.15 mm at 12 weeks and 1.32 ± 0.21, 1.28 ± 0.23, and 1.38 ± 0.31 mm at 17 weeks for examiners A, B, and C). The intrarater reliability of the three examiners was excellent (>0.90) and there was a strongly negative correlation between stir distance and CSR in TWY mice (>−0.80). Conclusions: In this study, we established the Time-SLIP technique in experimental mice. This technique allows for a better understanding of CSF dynamics in small laboratory animals. 37. Pseudogap phenomena near the BKT transition of a two-dimensional ultracold Fermi gas in the crossover region

Abstract

We investigate strong-coupling properties of a two-dimensional ultracold Fermi gas in the normal phase. In the three-dimensional case, it has been shown that the so-called pseudogap phenomena can be well described by a (non-self-consistent) $T$-matrix approximation (TMA). In the two-dimensional case, while this strong coupling theory can explain the pseudogap phenomenon in the strong-coupling regime, it unphysically gives large pseudogap size in the crossover region, as well as in the weak-coupling regime. We show that this difficulty can be overcome when one improve TMA to include higher order pairing fluctuations within the framework of a self-consistent $T$-matrix approximation (SCTMA). The essence of this improvement is also explained. We investigate the center-of-mass momentum distribution $n_{\boldsymbol Q}$ of Cooper pairs and their first-order correlation function $g_1(r)$ in a strongly interacting two-dimensional Fermi gas. Recently, the BKT (Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless) transition was reported in a two-dimensional $^6$Li Fermi gas, based on (1) the observations of anomalous enhancement of $n_{{\boldsymbol Q}={\boldsymbol 0}}$ [M. G. Ries, et. al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 114, 230401 (2015)], as well as (2) a power-law behavior of $g_1(r)$ [P. A. Murthy, et. al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 115, 010401 (2015)]. However, including pairing fluctuations within a $T$-matrix approximation (TMA), we show that these results can still be explained as strong-coupling properties of a normal-state two-dimensional Fermi gas. Our results indicate the importance of further experimental observations, to definitely confirm the realization of the BKT transition in this system.
