- Abstract
This study analyzes the contribution of peer attachment in predicting active coping and self-esteem in a sample of 109 institutionalized adolescents. It also explores the mediating role of social skills in the association between peer attachment, coping, and self-esteem. Structural equation modeling identified a model able to predict a positive and direct contribution of peer relationships on self-esteem. Results confirmed the mediating role of social skills but only between quality of peer attachment and the development of active coping. From an ecological perspective, quality of relationships with significant peer figures can contribute to the development of a secure base, especially in adolescents without family support. Consequently, institutionalized adolescents who perceive quality in their peer relationships seem to be more able to express their feelings and ideas. As a result, they can become able to establish positive and empathic relationships with others, which can lead to the development of active coping skills. The quality of peer relationships can also increase the self-esteem of these adolescents because they feel they have a source of personal support and can share their difficulties.

Purpose: Screening instruments specifically developed to identify genetic testing applicants who may need professional psychosocial support are much needed. However, there are none validated for the Portuguese population. This paper presents the translation, adaptation, and validation process of the Genetic Psychosocial Risk Instrument (GPRI) in a sample of 207 Portuguese applicants to genetic testing in the context of inherited cancer risk. Methods: Participants were mainly female (84.06%), with a mean age of 40.08 (SD = 12.89) and were recruited from the Portuguese Oncology Institute of Porto (IPO-PORTO). Confirmatory Factor Analysis was conducted to study the GPRI factorial structure. Convergent validity was assessed with the Impact of Events Scale (IES), the Clinical Outcome Routine Evaluation – Outcome Measure (CORE-OM), and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Results: It was confirmed a model composed by the factors Internal Impact of Genetic Testing, External Impact of Genetic Testing and History of Mental Health Concerns. These factors showed good internal consistency, convergent and discriminant validity. The factor Personal Loss to Cancer proposed in prior versions did not converge. We propose excluding this factor from the Portuguese Version of the scale. Conclusion: The Portuguese version of the GPRI is a reliable and valid instrument to use in routine clinical oncogenetic services as well as research settings.

hereditary cancer, genetic testing, emotion regulation, social support, cancer-risk distress, expressive suppression - Abstract
Objectives: Healthy applicants to genetic testing for cancer susceptibility (GTC) report more distress when they perceive their social support as low and when they tend to suppress their emotions. This study aimed to explore if suppressing emotions and perceiving others as unsupportive are related to each other in explaining cancer-risk distress. Methods: We performed a regression-based mediation analysis to assess if expressive suppression mediates or is mediated by perceived social support in the relation with cancer-risk distress. Participants were 125 healthy adults aged over 18 (M = 36.07, SD = 12.86), mostly female (72,4%), who undergone GTC to assess the presence of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer or Lynch syndromes. Results: Controlling for age and gender, we found a moderate size indirect effect of social support on cancer-risk distress through expressive suppression (β = -.095), in the absence of a direct or total effect of social support in cancer-risk distress. Conclusions: When healthy GTC applicants perceive their social network as less responsive, they tend to not express their emotions, which increases distress facing GTC. Practice implications: To help prevent cancer-risk distress, practitioners should carefully assess if applicants feel they can express their negative emotions within their social support network.

- Abstract
Adolescence is one of the most curious and interesting periods of human development with complex neurobiological and social relational changes (Moretti, Psalich, Donnell, 2019). Transition to residential care, as well as experiencing maltreatment, non-responsive, and neglectful relationships with primary caregivers can enhance adolescents vulnerability to the development of behavioral and emotional maladjustment (e.g., Costa, Mota & Matos, 2019; Mota & Matos, 2014). Portugal, as a paradigmatic example of historic reliance on the use of residential care, has nowadays one of the highest rates of children and young people in residential care, even when comparing with other European countries such as Greece, Spain or Germany (Delgado, Pinto, Carvalho & Gilligan, 2018). According to the most recent national report, it is estimated that 6855 children and adolescents were under any type of residential care (ISSIP, 2020). The prevalence is higher for adolescents (54%), and 77% of behavior problems have been diagnosed between the ages of 12 and 17 years old (ISSIP, 2020). At the present time, there are important structural changes being conducted in child and youth welfare policies, namely in what concerns promotion and protection measures in residential and foster care. Legal frameworks adopted in 2019 highlight the need to develop tailored interventions adapted to the child and youth idiosyncrasies and elect their voice on decisions that affect their lives. Considering this, knowledge production on the characteristics and needs of the population under residential care measures, can contribute to the development of more comprehensive policies and interventions. Since 2007, the National Social Security sector has been producing, on an annual basis, a detailed report that characterizes, mainly through cross sectional analysis, out of home care in Portugal. These documents provide background and context, and act as an important mean to track the development and change that occurred over the years (Bowen, 2009). In this sense, in this paper we will present a comparative analysis of demographic indicators and psychosocial adjustment, and measures prior to placement, published in the reports of the last decade (2009 - 2019). This will include behavior and severity problems, mental health of young people and taking pedopsychiatric medication, as well as the existence of regular / irregular monitoring of mental health - pedopsychiatric and / or psychological. This study is part of a major project called CareMe (Efficacy of an attachment-based intervention in residential care: A randomized controlled trial on the effects on the caregivers relational skills and the adolescents psychosocial adaptation) developed with the aim of improving caregiving practices in residential care, and ultimately contribute to adolescents adaptive psychosocial development. Results will be discussed considering adolescents needs, challenges and implications for policies in order to inform interventions that are more closely connected to protection and ultimately to human rights., Poster presented at XVI European Scientific Association on Residential & Family Care for Children and Adolescents Conference (EUSARF). METADATA ,CLINICAL psychology - Abstract
When addressing metadata with researchers, it is important to use models that include familiar domain concepts. In the Social Sciences, the Data Documentation Initiative (DDI) is a well-accepted source of such domain concepts. To create data and metadata, that is Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR), it is necessary to establish a compact set of DDI elements that meet project requirements and are likely to be adopted by researchers inexperienced with metadata creation. Over time, we have engaged in interviews and data description sessions with research groups in the Social Sciences, identifying a manageable DDI subset. TOGETHER, recent Clinical Psychology project dealing with risk assessment for hereditary cancer, considered the inclusion of a DDI subset for the production of metadata that are timely and interoperable with data publication initiatives in the same domain. Taking the DDI subset identified by the data curators, we present a preliminary assessment of its use as a realistic effort on the part of the researchers, taking into consideration the metadata created in two data description sessions, the effort involved, and the overall metadata quality. A follow-up questionnaire was used to assess the perspectives of the researchers regarding data description. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract

- Abstract

- Abstract

- Abstract
According to the most recent available data, in Portugal 6832 children and adolescents live in residential care, equally distributed by gender. Transition to residential care can be considered a risk factor for the psychological adjustment of adolescents. However, little attention has been paid to how boys and girls experience residential care and the relationships with caregivers. The present study aims to analyze the predictive effect of quality of the relationship with caregivers, institutionalization time, adolescents age and 1st institutionalization age on psychological adjustment of boys and girls in residential care. The sample consisted of 250 adolescents (aged 12 to 18; 55,4% girls) living in residential care facilities in Portugal (Porto district). Data collected included youth self-report questionnaires. Invariance measurement were guaranteed in a first step. A multigroup comparison showed differences in the model according to gender. Quality of the relationship with caregivers is negatively associated with antisocial behaviour in boys, but not girls. In addition, is a negative link between institutionalization time and boys' antisocial behaviour and institutionalization time and emotional suffering in girls. Findings point to the need of taking into account gender in residential care., Poster presented at 17th EARA conference - Adolescence in a rapidly changing world. Communication presented at the International Conference of Person Centered Healthcare, from October 17th to 18th, 2019. Abstract Patient & public involvement with research and the experience-based co-design are central participatory methods, which increase the relevance of research and its translation into patient centered care practices. TOGETHER is an ongoing project that underpins this approach for studying the psychosocial adaptation of individuals and families facing genetic testing and a life with increased genetic risk of cancer. Our aim is to describe and critically reflect with the attending audience on how the clinical staff and users with first-hand experience of increased genetic risk of cancer have been involved in the definition of the research question, the design of the project and its implementation so far. In particular, we will focus on the experience of two collaborative panels (panel of staff and panel of users) that have been created during the first year of the project, who have been involved in the methodological refinement of the studies and in the recruitment of participants. Reflective commentaries on the strengths, weaknesses, and challenges of our approach will be gathered through short interviews with the research team and the members of the panels. These views will be collated and discussed, as a basis for a deliberative reflection and feedback, aiming to guide our future steps in the project, while also informing on how to involve patients & public in research in the particular context of Portuguese hospitals., This work was supported by the European COMPETE2020 under grant POCI-01-0145-FEDER-030980, and Portuguese National funds FCT - Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P, under grant PTDC/PSI-ESP/30980/2017

- Abstract
Poster Presented at the International Conference on Person Centered Healthcare, from October 17th to 18th, 2019. Abstract Genetic testing (GT) allows the identification of germline mutations in families with higher risk of developing cancer. Identifying unaffected carriers of genetic mutations can lead to substantial reductions in cancer morbidity and mortality, through personalized preventive programs of surveillance and/or risk-reduction measures, such as prophylactic surgery. Evidence and clinical practice have consistently found a subgroup of GT applicants who experience difficulties adjusting to GT and to life with an increased genetic cancer risk. These applicants need additional psychosocial support but international guidelines for hereditary cancer care lack specific guidance on psychosocial care to GT applicants. In this poster we present TOGETHER, a research project that aims to study the process of psychosocial adjustment of unaffected individuals undergoing GT and their families, in order to inform an integrated family-centered care for inherited cancer syndromes. WOS: 000364642200009, PubMed: 25944797, The purpose of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of the Utrecht-Management of Identity Commitments Scale (U-MICS), a self-report measure aimed at assessing identity processes of commitment, in-depth exploration, and reconsideration of commitment. We tested its factor structure in university students from a large array of cultural contexts, including 10 nations located in Europe (i.e., Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, and Switzerland), Middle East (i.e., Turkey), and Asia (i.e., China, Japan, and Taiwan). Furthermore, we tested national and gender measurement invariance. Participants were 6,118 (63.2% females) university students aged from 18 to 25 years (M-age = 20.91 years). Results indicated that the three-factor structure of the U-MICS fitted well in the total sample, in each national group, and in gender groups. Furthermore, national and gender measurement invariance were established. Thus, the U-MICS can be fruitfully applied to study identity in university students from various Western and non-Western contexts., Polish National Science Center [2011/01/D/HS6/04077], The authors disclosed receipt of the following financial support for the research, authorship, and/or publication of this article: Jan Cieciuch was supported by Grant 2011/01/D/HS6/04077 from the Polish National Science Center.

This study aims tests the predictive effect of the quality of relationship to significant figures (teachers, school and institutional staff) in the development of self-concept of young people. Also tests the mediational effect of the quality of relationship to peers and the moderating effect of the time of residential care in this association. The sample was composed by 400 institutionalized young people, between 12 and 18 years from both genders, in Portugal. The results underline the importance of the quality of the relationship to the significant figures of affection (in school and institution) for the development of a positive self-concept. The relationship with peers shows to be relevant corroborating the mediational role in the development of self-concept. The time of residential care didn’t show significant relationship between the quality of relationship established with significant adults and self-concept. Attachment theory emphasizes the importance of secure relationships between adults and young people.

Objectives: Breast cancer (BC) can be a traumatic and stressful experience for women but there are wide-ranging differences in the ways in which women respond and adapt to BC. This systematic review examines which sociodemographic, disease-related, and psychosocial factors near diagnosis predict later psychological adjustment to BC. Methods: Database searches were conducted in nine different health-related databases from 2000 to December 2015 using relevant search terms. Full-text, peer-reviewed articles in English that analyzed potential predictors of psychological adjustment in longitudinal studies were considered for inclusion. Results: Of 1780 abstracts 41 studies fulfilled inclusion criteria. Consistent sociodemographic and disease-related variables predictors of adjustment were income, fatigue, cancer stage, and physical functioning. Psychosocial factors, particularly optimism and trait-anxiety, as well as perceived social support, coping strategies, and initial levels of psychological functioning were found to be predictive of later depressive and anxiety symptoms, psychological distress, and quality of life for women with BC, in predictable ways. Other psychosocial variables, such as cognitive and body image factors, predicted psychological adjustment but were explored only by a few studies. Conclusions: The majority of studies showed a significant relationship between psychosocial factors and psychological adjustment. These results point to specific sociodemographic, disease-related, and psychosocial factors that can help to identify women at the time of diagnosis who are at risk for long-term psychological challenges so they can be referred for psychological support that targets their specific needs and can improve their quality of life and mood, and decrease indicators of anxiety, depression and psychological distress.

The purpose of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of the Utrecht-Management of Identity Commitments Scale (U-MICS), a self-report measure aimed at assessing identity processes of commitment, in-depth exploration, and reconsideration of commitment. Participants were 6,118 (63.2% females) university students aged from 18 to 25 years (Mage = 20.91 years). Results indicated that the three-factor structure of the U-MICS fitted well in the total sample, in each national group, and in gender groups. Furthermore, national and gender measurement invariance were established. Thus, the U-MICS can be fruitfully applied to study identity in university students from various Western and non-Western contexts.

The present study explored the differential effects of the principal development contexts (attachment to parents and peers) on the way in which adolescents experience their bodies. Six hundred and ninety adolescents and young adults (242 male and 448 female) participated in this study, with ages varying between 15 and 23 years (M = 17,8 and SD= 2,00). The results of the prediction model revealed that gender and romantic attachment were the variables that showed the strongest effect on the variation in body image. A mediation effect was observed among attachment to parents and body image through romantic and friendship relationships. The results highlight the need of understanding body experience in an interpersonal context.

According to attachment theory, the quality of relationships with parental figures play a key role in the way young people perceive themselves and others, contributing also to self-esteem development of to the relational ties built with peers. The main purpose of this study is to evaluate the contribution of the quality of attachment to mother in the prediction of the construction of peers bonds, taking into account the hypothesis of the mediating role of self-esteem, in a sample of 742 adolescents from both sexes, between 13 and 23 years (M=17.09, SD=1.84), from intact and divorced families. The study used the Attachment Questionnaire to the Father and Mother (Matos & Costa, 2004), the Inventory of Parental and Peer Attachment (Armsden & Greenberg, 1987) and also the Rosenberg’s Self-Esteem Scale (Rosenberg, 1965). All questionnaires presented appropriate psychometric qualities, with good internal consistency and adequate fit indexes (1st order confirmatory factor analysis). Results were obtained through structural equations methodology, and are indicative of quality of attachment to the mother as direct and indirect predictor of the quality of peers’ relationships. In the model tested, self-esteem is positively predicted by the mother’s quality of emotional bond, and negatively by inhibition of exploration and individuality and separation anxiety. The results are also consistent with the mediating role of self-esteem on the association between quality of attachment to mother and attachment to peers. Some of the current controversies and challenges regarding coping conceptualisation and assessment are addressed, followed by a discussion of the procedures used to validate a Portuguese version of the COPE-Inventory (Carver, Scheier, & Weintraub, 1989) using a sample of 1074 freshstudents from different courses of the University of Porto. An Exploratory Factor Analysis was conducted with the first (randomly selected) half of the sample. On the second half each scale local adjustment, as well as the global model fit were tested, using Confirmatory Factor Analysis, revealing adequate fit indexes. An adapted version of the measure with 4 scales, reflecting Active/Reflexive, Seeking support, Avoidant and Positive signification strategies, is proposed. These scales revealed a satisfactory internal consistency (Cronbach’s alphas ranging between .64 e .80) and significant and moderate intercorrelations in the expected directions, suggesting distinct but nevertheless potentially interdependent coping strategies that could coexist throughout the coping process.

This study intends to identify variations in quality of adolescents’ attachment to parents as a function of family structure (intact and divorced families) and interparental conflict. Furthermore, differences according to adolescent’s and parent’s gender were also analysed. The sample consists of 310 adolescents, 14 to 18 aged from both genders. Participants responded to the Father/Mother Attachment Questionnaire (Matos & Costa, 2001, revised version) and the Children’s Perception of Interparental Conflict Scale (Grych, Seid & Fincham, 1992). Both instruments present adequate psychometrics qualities, tested by confirmatory factor analyses and internal reliability. Results indicated that divorce affects more the quality of attachment to father, while interparental conflict is the variable that predicted more the quality of attachment to parents, affecting the quality of emotional bond to both parents independently of family structure.

- Abstract
In recent years we assist in psychotherapy research to a growing interest in studying the professional development of psychotherapists. The study of the characteristics of psychotherapists considered experts is an important contribution to this field. The aim of this study is to analyze the narratives of 20 expert psychotherapists from different theoretical orientations (cognitive-behavioral, constructivist, humanistic, psychoanalytic and systemic) about their personal and professional development along their clinical practice. In the analysis two major themes emerged. In this article we present the results of the second theme examined, the stages of development and changes of the psychotherapist organized in two sub-themes, namely (a) steps and changes in development of psychotherapists working in the professional domain, (b) steps and changes in development of psychotherapists in the personal domain. The findings underline the need to consider the changes in the personal and professional development in the study of the integral development of the psychotherapist., Assiste-se, nos últimos anos, na investigação, a um crescente interesse pelo estudo do desenvolvimento profissional do psicoterapeuta. - Abstract
The working alliance has been recognized as a predictor of psychotherapy outcome across therapeutic orientations. Despite mixed findings regarding the effect of problem severity on the alliance formation, there is evidence suggesting that therapist factors may interfere in this association. This study examined how clients' baseline clinical features affected the early alliance and the possible role of therapists' countertransference management as a mediator. Thirteen therapeutic dyads were assessed at 2 different time points. Clients' clinical dimensions were assessed prior to the 2nd session, and therapists' countertransference management and clients' ratings of the alliance were measured after the 2nd session. Positive associations were found between clients' subjective wellbeing, social functioning, risk, and global psychological distress and countertransference management dimensions and total score. Empathy-based countertransference management suppressed the negative impact of clinical risk on alliance. Our findings suggest that clinical problems activate countertransference management, which in turn may buffer their negative effect on alliance., Competing Interests: Conflict of interest: the authors declare no potential conflict of interest., (©Copyright J.F.
