The insulating rare-earth magnet LiY1−xHoxF4 has received great attention because a laboratory field applied perpendicular to its crystallographic c axis converts the low-energy electronic spin Hamiltonian into the (dilute) transverse field Ising model. The mapping between the real magnet and the transverse field Ising model is strongly dependent on the exact nature of the low-energy Hamiltonian for the material, which can be determined by spectroscopy in the dilute limit. The energies of the eigenstates are in the difficult terahertz (THz) regime, and here we use THz time domain and Fourier transform spectroscopy to directly measure the lowest crystal-field levels of LiY1−xHoxF4 in the dilute limit, including nuclear hyperfine substructure. The high resolution of our measurements allows us to observe the nonequidistantly spaced Ho (I = 72 ) hyperfine transitions originating from dipolar and quadrupolar hyperfine interactions. We provide refined crystal-field parameters and extract the dipolar and quadrupolar hyperfine constants AJ = 0.027 03 ± 0.000 03 cm−1 (810.3 ± 0.9 MHz) and B = 0.04 ± 0.01 cm−1(1.2 ± 0.3 GHz), respectively. Thereupon we determine all crystal-field energy levels and magnetic moments of the 5/8 ground-state manifold, including the (nonlinear) hyperfine corrections. The latter improve the prediction precision by a factor of 60 compared to previous crystal-field parameters. Additionally,we establish the far-infrared, low-temperature refractive index of LiY1−xHoxF4.

To understand the timing of deglaciation of the northernmost marine-terminating glaciers of the Cordilleran Ice Sheet (CIS), we obtained 2610Be surface-exposure ages from glacially scoured bedrock surfaces in Prince William Sound (PWS), Alaska. We sampled six elevation transects between sea level and 620 m and spanning a distance of 14 to 70 km along ice flow paths. Most transect age–elevation patterns could not be explained by a simple model of thinning ice; the patterns provide evidence for lingering ice cover and possible inheritance. A reliable set of 20 ages ranges between 17.4 ± 2.0 and 11.6 ± 2.8 ka and indicates ice receded from northwestern PWS around 14.3 ± 1.6 ka, thinned at a rate of ~120–160 m/ka, and retreated from sea-level sites at 12.9 ± 1.1 ka at a rate of 20 m/yr. The retreat rate likely slowed as glaciers retreated into northern PWS. These results are consistent with the growing body of reported deglacial constraints on collapse of ice sheets along the Alaska margin indicating collapse of the CIS soon after 17 ka. These data are consistent with paleotemperature data indicating that a warming North Pacific Ocean caused catastrophic collapse of this part of the CIS.

The weathering of continental surfaces and the transport of sediments via rivers into the oceans is an integral part of the dynamic processes that shape the Earth's surface. To understand how tectonic and climatic forcings control regional rates of weathering, we must be able to identify their effects on sedimentary archives over geologic timescales. Cosmogenic nuclides are a valuable tool to study rates of surface processes and have long been applied in fluvial systems to quantify basin-wide erosion rates. However, in large rivers, continual processes of erosion and deposition during sediment transport make it difficult to constrain how long sediments spend within the fluvial system. In this study, we examine the role of rivers in buffering erosional signals by constraining the timescales of fluvial transport in large rivers across the world. We apply a stochastic numerical model based on measurements of cosmogenic nuclides concentrations and calculate sediment residence times of 10(4)-10(5) years in large rivers. We report a family of organometallic rare-earth complexes with the general formula (COT)M(Cp-ttt) (where (COT)(2-) = cyclooctatetraenide, (Cp-ttt)(-) = 1,2,4-tri(tert-butyl)cyclopentadienide, M = Y(iii), Nd(iii), Dy(iii) and Er(iii)). Similarly to the prototypical Er(iii) analog featuring pentamethylcyclopentadienyl ligand (Cp*)(-), (COT)Er(Cp-ttt) behaves as a single-ion magnet. However, the introduction of the sterically demanding (Cp-ttt)(-) imposes geometric constraints that lead to a simplified magnetic relaxation behavior compared to the (Cp*)(-) containing complexes. Consequently, (COT)Er(Cp-ttt) can be viewed as a model representative of this organometallic single-ion magnet architecture. In addition, we demonstrate that the increased steric profile associated with the (Cp-ttt)(-) ligand permits preparation, structural characterization and interrogation of magnetic properties of the early-lanthanide complex, (COT)Nd(Cp-ttt). The establishment of the Kalahari sand field corresponds to regional, continental, and global scale morphotectonic and climatic changes that contributed to the mass production and widespread dispersion of sand. These changes substantially altered existing habitats, thus constituting a crucial milestone for flora, fauna, and hominins in southern Africa during the Pleistocene.

The onset and intensification of eolian activity mark climatic transitions that promote wide-scale aridification, recorded by the generation and preservation of massive sand deposits. Evaluating the impact and implications of such repositories on Earth systems requires knowledge about the timing of their emplacement and the mechanisms responsible for their generation, which remain highly uncertain. Here we provide time constraints for the establishment of the Kalahari Erg, which is the largest continuous body of sand on Earth. We apply cosmogenic nuclide dating of sand from the Kalahari Desert combined with numerical modeling to determine when sand was introduced into the interior of southern Africa. Through the consideration of several scenarios, we show that major events of eolian sand transport and accumulation occurred between ~2.5 and 1 Myr ago. This substantial activity, which significantly altered environmental settings, corresponds to regional, continental, and global scale morphotectonic and climatic changes that contributed to the mass production and widespread dispersion of sand. These changes substantially altered existing habitats, thus constituting a crucial milestone for hominin evolution and migration throughout the African continent during the Pleistocene.

Modern techniques for the investigation of correlated materials in the time domain combine selective excitation in the THz frequency range with selective probing of coupled structural, electronic and magnetic degrees of freedom using x-ray scattering techniques. Cryogenic sample temperatures are commonly required to prevent thermal occupation of the low energy modes and to access relevant material ground states. Here, we present a chamber optimized for high-field THz excitation and (resonant) x-ray diffraction at sample temperatures between 5 and 500 K. Directly connected to the beamline vacuum and featuring both a Beryllium window and an in-vacuum detector, the chamber covers the full (2–12.7) keV energy range of the femtosecond x-ray pulses available at the Bernina endstation of the SwissFEL free electron laser. Successful commissioning experiments made use of the energy tunability to selectively track the dynamics of the structural, magnetic and orbital order of Ca2RuO4 and Tb2Ti2O7 at the Ru (2.96 keV) and Tb (7.55 keV) L-edges, respectively. THz field amplitudes up to 1.12 MV cm−1 peak field were demonstrated and used to excite the samples at temperatures as low as 5 K.

The change in provenance that occured around the Pliocene‐Pleistocene transition is attributed to adjustments of the drainage systems to axial crustal uplift, resulting in the formation of large waterbodies. , Abstract The structural depression that occupies the Okavango Basin in southern Africa comprises a depo‐centre within the intracratonic Kalahari Basin where sediments of the Cenozoic Kalahari Group have accumulated. The Okavango Basin has been formed due to stretching and subsidence at an area of diffused deformation, southwestwards to the main East African Rift System (EARS). Sediments from two full Kalahari Group sequences, located on opposite sides of the Gumare Fault that forms a major fault within the Okavango Basin, were studied to determine their provenance and chronology. Terrestrial Cosmogenic Nuclide (TCN) 26Al/10Be burial dating was used to constrain a chronostratigraphical framework, and Pb, Sr, and Nd isotopic ratios combined with geochemical and sedimentological analyses were applied to track the source areas of the sediments.Results indicate the following sequence of basin filling: (a) Accumulation between ca. 4–3 Ma during which the currently downthrown (southern) block received a mixture of sediments mostly from the Choma‐Kalomo, Ghanzi‐Chobe, and Damara terranes, and possibly from the Lufilian Belt and/or Karoo basalts during earlier stages of deposition. Simultaneously, the upthrown (northern) block received sediments from more distant Archean sources in the Zimbabwe and/or Kasai cratons, (b) Hiatus in sedimentation occurred at both sites between ca. 3–2 Ma, (c) Sediments on both sides of the Gumare Fault share a similar source (Angolan Shield) with minor distinct contributions to the downthrown block from the Kasai Craton and local sources input to the upthrown block, and (d) Regional distribution of aeolian sand since at least 1 Ma. The change in source areas is attributed to rearrangements of the drainage systems that were probably linked to vertical crustal movements on the margins of the Okavango Basin. The tectonically induced morphodynamics controlled the landscape evolution of the endorheic basin where vast lakes, wetlands and salt pans have developed through time.]

Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) of quartz is an established technique for dating late Pleistocene to late Holocene sediments. Unfortunately, this method is often limited to up to 100 ka (thousands of years). Recent developments in new extended-range luminescence techniques show great potential for dating older sediments of middle and even early Pleistocene age. These methods include thermally transferred OSL (TT-OSL) and violet stimulated luminescence (VSL) for quartz and post-infrared infrared stimulated luminescence (pIRIR) for feldspar. Here we investigate the luminescence behaviour of the TT-OSL, VSL, and pIRIR signals of quartz and feldspar minerals of aeolian sediments of Nilotic origin from the eastern Mediterranean. We sampled a 15 m thick sequence (Kerem Shalom) comprising sandy calcic palaeosols, which is part of a sand sheet that covers an extensive region in south-western Israel. Dose recovery and bleaching experiments under natural conditions indicated that the pIRIR250 signal is the most suitable for dating the Nilotic feldspar. Luminescence intensity profiles revealed natural saturation of the three signals at the same depth of ∼6 m, indicating that ages of samples below that depth are minimum ages. Using TT-OSL and pIRIR250, a minimum age of 715 ka for the base of the section was obtained, suggesting aeolian sand accumulation along the eastern Mediterranean coastal plain already since the early Pleistocene. Our results indicate that both TT-OSL and pIRIR250 can accurately date aeolian sediments of Nilotic origin up to 200 ka and that minimum ages can be provided for older samples up to the early Pleistocene.

The long-term bedrock incision of streams in the northeastern Negev has been dictated, since the Early Pliocene, by the subsidence of the Dead Sea basin. However, this incision is accompanied by very long intervals of sediment aggradation. Here, we document the Quaternary-scale fluvial response to changing base-level, lithology, structure, and climate along the hyperarid Nahal Zafit, NE Negev. The oldest (~1–2 Ma) alluvial remnants point to a widespread beveled bedrock pediment at the base of the Hazera anticline. This pediment, like other stream-pediment-anticline relationships in the region, provides the baseline framework into which Nahal Zafit incises. During the Early to Middle Pleistocene, this pediment was the base-level for all streams emerging out of the anticlines. The tectonic subsidence of the regional base-level at the rift margin farther downstream, has caused incision and upstream migration of bedrock knickpoints, triggering the development of a wide incised valley in the Mazar syncline, adjacent to the Hazera anticline. Since ~330 ka, fluvial terraces, landslides and taluses record intervals of basin-wide fluvial deposition under prevailing hyperarid to arid climate. Despite the general arid climate, prolonged fluvial deposition intervals occurred at ca. 330–265, 230–125, and 110–20 ka. Rapid and quite short-duration bedrock incision occurred in-between these, much longer, intervals of aggradation. In addition to the proposed climatic imprint on fluvial aggradation-incision cycles and the first-order base-level control of the rift margin fault, the formation of strath terraces and distribution of stored sediments within the drainage basin point to the fundamental role that lithology and structure play in the Quaternary evolution of the NE Negev watersheds.

Erosion related to glacial activity produces enormous amounts of sediment. However, sediment mobilization in glacial systems is extremely complex. Sediment is derived from headwalls, slopes along the margins of glaciers, and basal erosion; however, the rates and relative contributions of each are unknown. To test and quantify conceptual models for sediment generation and transport in a simple valley glacier system, we collected samples for 10Be analysis from the Kahiltna Glacier, which flows off Denali, the tallest mountain in North America. We collected angular quartz clasts on bedrock ledges from a high mountainside above the equilibrium line altitude (ELA), amalgamated clast samples from medial moraines, and sand samples from the river below the glacier. We also collected sand from nine other rivers along the south flank of the Alaska Range. In the upper catchment of the Kahiltna drainage system, toppling, rockfall, and slab collapse are significant erosional processes. Erosion rates of hundreds of millimeters per thousand years were calculated from 10Be concentrations. The 10Be concentrations in amalgamated samples from medial moraines showed concentrations much lower than those measured from the high mountainside, a result of the incorporation of thick, and effectively unexposed, blocks into the moraine, as well as the incorporation of material from lower-elevation nearby slopes above the moraines. The 10Be sediment samples from downstream of the Kahiltna Glacier terminus showed decreasing concentrations with increasing distance from the moraine, indicating the incorporation of material that was less exposed to cosmic rays, most likely from the glacier base as well as from slopes downstream of the glacier. Taken together, 10Be concentrations in various samples from the Kahiltna drainage system indicated erosion rates of hundreds of millimeters per thousand years, which is typical of tectonically active terrains. We also measured 10Be concentrations from river sediment samples collected from across the south flank of the Alaska Range. Calculation of basinwide weighted erosion rates that incorporated hypsometric curves produced unrealistically high erosion rates, which indicates that the major source of sediment was not exposed to cosmic rays and was primarily derived from the base of glaciers. Moreover, the apparently high erosion rates suggest that parts of each drainage system are not in erosional steady state with respect to cosmogenic isotope accumulation.
