Summary The rumen contents were collected from fifty-one female Grant's gazelles and eighteen males, sampling of the females taking place at an average of four per month during a 1-year period. The rumen samples were analysed for their browse to graze ratio, as shown by the dicotyledon to monocotyledon ratio, the primary objective being to determine whether the degree of pregnancy with its inferred changing nutritional demands, influenced this ratio. Other factors investigated were rainfall as related to grass availability, age of the individuals and sex. The results suggested the species to be primarily a browser, taking an average of 65.8% browse and 34.3% graze. The most significant factor affecting browse to graze intake appeared to be rainfall as related to grassland flushes. No other significant influences were detected.
