Flare frequency distributions represent a key approach to addressing one of the largest problems in solar and stellar physics: determining the mechanism that counter-intuitively heats coronae to temperatures that are orders of magnitude hotter than the corresponding photospheres. It is widely accepted that the magnetic field is responsible for the heating, but there are two competing mechanisms that could explain it: nanoflares or Alfv\'en waves. To date, neither can be directly observed. Nanoflares are, by definition, extremely small, but their aggregate energy release could represent a substantial heating mechanism, presuming they are sufficiently abundant. One way to test this presumption is via the flare frequency distribution, which describes how often flares of various energies occur. If the slope of the power law fitting the flare frequency distribution is above a critical threshold, $\alpha=2$ as established in prior literature, then there should be a sufficient abundance of nanoflares to explain coronal heating. We performed $>$600 case studies of solar flares, made possible by an unprecedented number of data analysts via three semesters of an undergraduate physics laboratory course. This allowed us to include two crucial, but nontrivial, analysis methods: pre-flare baseline subtraction and computation of the flare energy, which requires determining flare start and stop times. We aggregated the results of these analyses into a statistical study to determine that $\alpha = 1.63 \pm 0.03$. Abstract Background People with different types of dementia may have distinct symptoms and experiences that affect their quality of life. This study investigated whether quality of life varied across types of dementia and over time. Methods The participants were 1555 people with mild-to-moderate dementia and 1327 carers from the IDEAL longitudinal cohort study, recruited from clinical services. As many as possible were followed for up to 6 years. Diagnoses included were Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, mixed Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia, Parkinson’s disease dementia, dementia with Lewy bodies, and frontotemporal dementia. Self- and informant-rated versions of the Quality of Life in Alzheimer’s Disease scale were used. A joint model, incorporating a mixed effects model with random effects and a survival model to account for dropout, was used to examine whether quality of life varied by dementia type at the time of diagnosis and how trajectories changed over time. Results The strongest associations between dementia type and quality of life were seen around the time of diagnosis. For both self-ratings and informant ratings, people with Parkinson’s disease dementia or dementia with Lewy bodies had lower quality of life scores. Over time there was little change in self-rated scores across all dementia types (− 0.15 points per year). Informant-rated scores declined over time (− 1.63 points per year), with the greatest decline seen in ratings by informants for people with dementia with Lewy bodies (− 2.18 points per year). Conclusions Self-rated quality of life scores were relatively stable over time whilst informant ratings showed a steeper decline. People with Parkinson’s disease dementia or dementia with Lewy bodies report particularly low levels of quality of life, indicating the importance of greater attention to the needs of these groups.

Participants comprised spousal caregivers (n = 977) of people with dementia. Self-reported health conditions using the Charlson Comorbidity Index, stress, positive experiences of caregiving, and social network were assessed over two years. Mixed effect models were used Results On average participants had 1.5 health conditions at baseline; increasing to 2.1 conditions over two years. More health conditions were reported by caregivers who were older, had no formal education, provided 10 + hours of care per day, and/or cared for a person with more neuropsychiatric symptoms at baseline. More baseline health conditions were associated with greater stress at baseline but not with stress over time. Over two years, when caregivers’ health conditions increased, their stress increased whereas their social network diminished Discussion Findings highlight that most caregivers have their own health problems which require management to avoid increased stress and shrinking of social networks

Vegetable oils in the lubricant field are largely studied. Their efficiency depends on their viscosity parameters and their fatty acid composition. The actions of moringa oil used as a lubricant base and as a lubricant additive have been shown in this work. Graphite, carbon nanofibers, and carbon nanodots are carbon phases of different shapes used as solid additives. The tribological performances of lubricant blends composed of between 0.5 and 1 wt.% of particles have been evaluated using a ball-on-plane tribometer under an ambient atmosphere. No additional surfactant was used. The positive and important actions of a small amount of moringa oil added in the lubricant formulas are demonstrated. The results obtained allow us to point out the influence of the type and shape of particles. Physicochemical investigations allow us to propose a synergistic effect between the particles and moringa oil as additives in dodecane.

10. Resilience in caregivers of people with mild-to-moderate dementia: findings from the IDEAL cohort

Abstract Objectives A novel model of resilience was tested in caregivers of people with mild-to-moderate dementia and was extended to explore whether including self-efficacy, optimism, and self-esteem improved its predictive value. Design Cross-sectional. Setting Data from the IDEAL cohort were used. Participants The study comprised 1222 caregivers of people with dementia. Measurements A composite resilience score was calculated from five measures. Multivariable regressions were used to investigate factors associated with resilience. Results Greater resilience was associated with being older, being male, and caregiving for older people with dementia. Greater resilience was also observed when people with dementia had fewer functional difficulties and/or fewer neuropsychiatric symptoms, there was a stronger dyadic relationship, and the caregiver had fewer social restrictions, less neuroticism, and greater perceived competence. Surprisingly, caregiver self-efficacy, optimism, and self-esteem were unrelated to resilience. Conclusion Caregivers of people with mild-to-moderate dementia generally scored well for resilience. Resilience was associated with both the personal characteristics of caregivers and level of care need among people with dementia. Future work is needed to determine whether the caregivers in this cohort appeared resilient because the care recipients had relatively low care needs and consequently placed fewer demands on caregiver well-being than would be the case where dementia is more advanced.

Activated carbons are commonly used for adsorption/depollution applications, but only a few studies are related to their lubricating properties. In order to investigate a new family of friction reducers, the tribological properties of biochars and derived activated carbons obtained from sugar cane bagasse are investigated. Activated carbons are obtained from either a physical (steam water) or chemical (with phosphoric acid) activation process. The tribological tests show that the activated carbons present very low friction coefficients, close to 0.08. The correlation of textural and tribological investigations shows that the specific surface area of the compounds as well as the microporous and mesoporous domain extensions are key parameters to optimize the friction reduction properties of activated carbons. The friction properties of the compounds are improved if the mesoporous domain extension is above 40% of the total porous volume. This study shows that local biomass waste valorization is possible and that sugar cane bagasse-derived activated carbons appear as interesting new friction reduction additives for lubricants.

Abstract As the world faces an escalating energy crisis, the necessity of adopting alternative energy sources becomes increasingly evident. Despite challenges, the imperative to prioritise these eco‐friendly alternatives remains paramount in paving the way for a more sustainable and resilient future for our planet and its inhabitants. The pursuit of sustainable energy sources has brought the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) into the spotlight as a crucial cathodic reaction in energy‐converting systems, notably fuel cells (FCs). These FCs hold tremendous promise in providing an eco‐friendly and efficient energy supply. However, the widespread implementation of FCs is hindered by their reliance on expensive and scarce noble metal catalysts, such as platinum (Pt), which pose economic and environmental challenges. Hence, this work reports the preparation, characterisation (FTIR, XPS, SEM and EDX) and application of four composites based on doped‐carbon materials (CM) and on the Wells‐Dawson POM salt K6⋅α‐[P2W12Mo6O62] ⋅ 19H2O (P2W12Mo6@MWCNT_N8, P2W12Mo6@MWCNT_N6, P2W12Mo6@MWCNT_S6, and P2W12Mo6@GF_S6) as ORR electrocatalysts in alkaline medium (pH=13). The successful doping of the carbon materials with nitrogen (N) and sulphur (S) and the incorporation of the polyoxometalate were verified through comprehensive structural characterisation. Overall, P2W12Mo6@MWCNT_N8 exhibited favourable onset potentials of 0.84 V vs. RHE, highlighting its high catalytic activity. Additionally, the catalyst showed excellent tolerance to methanol crossover, retaining 91 % of initial current, which is crucial for practical fuel cell applications. Furthermore, the P2W12Mo6@MWCNT_N8 catalyst showed commendable stability, retaining 81 % of its initial current after 36000 seconds at an operating potential of E=0.46 V vs. RHE. These encouraging results denote the significant potential of this electrocatalyst in advancing sustainable energy conversion technologies.

Abstract Background Cross-sectional evidence indicates that certain personality traits may influence how well people with dementia and their caregivers are able to live alongside the condition. However, no studies to date have explored these associations longitudinally. The present study aimed to explore whether each of the Five-Factor personality traits were associated with change over two years in perceptions of ‘living well’ for people with dementia and their caregivers. ‘Living well’ was conceptualized as a composite of quality of life, satisfaction with life, and subjective well-being. Methods Data were analyzed from 1487 people with dementia and 1234 caregivers who took part in the IDEAL cohort. Participants were categorized into low, medium, and high groups for each trait using stanine scores. Latent growth curve models investigated associations between these groups and ‘living well’ scores for each trait at baseline and at 12 and 24 months. Covariates included cognition in people with dementia and stress in caregivers. A Reliable Change Index was calculated against which to evaluate changes in ‘living well’ scores over time. Results At baseline, neuroticism was negatively associated with ‘living well’ scores for people with dementia, while conscientiousness, extraversion, openness, and agreeableness were positively associated. For caregivers, neuroticism was negatively associated with ‘living well’ scores at baseline while conscientiousness and extraversion were positively associated. ‘Living well’ scores were mostly stable over time with no influence of personality traits on observed changes. Conclusions Findings suggest that personality traits, particularly neuroticism, have a meaningful impact on how people with dementia and caregivers rate their capability to ‘live well’ at baseline. Over time ‘living well’ scores for each personality trait group were largely stable. Studies utilizing longer follow-up periods and more appropriate measures of personality are needed to corroborate and extend the findings of the present study.

IntroductionThe discrepancy between caregiver-ratings and self-ratings of abilities is commonly used to assess awareness in people with dementia. We investigated the contribution of caregiver and dyadic characteristics to the difference in perspective between caregiver-informants and people with dementia about difficulties experienced, when considering awareness of condition.MethodsWe conducted exploratory cross-sectional analyses using data from the IDEAL cohort. Participants were 1,038 community-dwelling people with mild-to-moderate dementia, and coresident spouse/partner caregivers. The Representations and Adjustment to Dementia Index (RADIX) checklist reporting difficulties commonly experienced in dementia was completed by 960 caregiver-informants and 989 people with dementia. Difference in scores was calculated for 916 dyads. Demographic information, cognition, informant-rated functional ability and neuropsychiatric symptoms were recorded for the person with dementia. Self-reported data were collected on mood, comorbidity, religion, importance of religion, relationship quality, and caregiver stress.ResultsFor most dyads, caregivers reported more RADIX difficulties than people with dementia. Caregiver RADIX ratings were more closely associated with informant-rated functional ability and neuropsychiatric symptoms than with cognition. More RADIX difficulties and higher stress were reported by female caregivers. Greater RADIX difference was associated with more caregiver stress, and older age but less depression in people with dementia.ConclusionFew dyadic characteristics were important, but caregiver stress was higher where caregivers reported more RADIX difficulties and/or the difference in perspective was greater, whereas partners with dementia reported better mood. In addition to offering information about awareness of condition, the caregiver rating and difference in perspectives could indicate where more support is needed.

This paper studies the optimal control of a commercial building's thermostatic load during off-peak hours as an ancillary service to the transmission system operator of a power grid. It provides an algorithmic framework which commercial buildings can implement to cost-effectively increase their electricity demand at night while they are unoccupied, instead of using standard inflexible setpoint control. Consequently, there is minimal or no impact on user comfort, while the building manager gains an additional income stream from providing the ancillary service, and can benefit further by pre-conditioning the building for later periods. The framework helps determine the amount of flexibility that should be offered for the service, and cost optimized profiles for electricity usage when delivering the service. Here, we mathematically formulate an optimal centralized (therefore non-local) control problem for stable operation of power grids and determine the minimal amount of active power necessary to guarantee a stable service within the operational constraints, minimizing a suitable cost function at the same time. This optimal control can be used to benchmark control proposals and we demonstrate this benchmarking process by investigating the performance of three distributed controllers, two of which are fully decentralized, that have been recently studied in the physics and power systems engineering literature. Our results show that cost efficient controllers distribute the controlled response amongst all nodes in the power grid. Additionally, superior performance can be achieved by incorporating sufficient information about the disturbance causing the instability. Abstract About fifty years ago, the world’s first fully automated system for trading securities was introduced by Instinet in the US. Since then the world of trading has been revolutionised by the introduction of electronic markets and automatic order execution. Nowadays, financial institutions exploit the associated flow of daily data using more and more advanced analytics to gain valuable insight on the markets and inform their investment decisions. In particular, time series of Open High Low Close prices and Volume data are of special interest as they allow identifying trading patterns useful for forecasting both stock prices and volumes. Traditionally, relational databases have been used to store this data; however, the ever-growing volume of this data, the adoption of the hybrid cloud model, and the availability of novel non-relational databases which claim to be more scalable and fault tolerant raise the question whether relational databases are still the most appropriate. In this study, we define a set of criteria to evaluate performance of a variety of databases on a hybrid cloud environment. There, we conduct experiments using standard and custom workloads. Results show that migration to a MongoDB database would be most beneficial in terms of cost, storage space, and throughput. In addition, organisations wishing to take advantage of autoscaling and the maintenance power of the cloud should opt for a cloud native solution.

Abstract Background It is unclear whether people with dementia (PwD) have more negative attitudes toward own aging (ATOA) than people without dementia and what factors influence ATOA among PwD. We investigated whether PwD have more negative ATOA than individuals without dementia and whether cognition and dementia subtype are associated with ATOA in PwD. Methods Data from the IDEAL and PROTECT studies were used to compare ATOA between 1502 PwD (mean (SD) age = 76.3 (8.5)) and 6377 individuals without dementia (mean (SD) age = 66.1 (7.1)). Linear regressions and ANOVA were used. Results PwD reported slightly more negative ATOA than people without dementia; this relationship disappeared after controlling for depression and self-rated health. In PwD more positive ATOA showed negligible associations with better general cognition, memory performance, verbal fluency, and visuospatial ability. However, after adjusting for covariates only better visuospatial ability predicted more positive ATOA. Additional analyses showed that before and after controlling for covariates, individuals with poorer self-reported visual acuity have more negative ATOA. Amongst dementia subtypes, people with Parkinson’s disease dementia and dementia with Lewy bodies reported most negative ATOA. Conclusions ATOA between PwD and people without dementia do not differ. ATOA in PwD appear to be affected not by cognitive impairment but by other characteristics that vary across dementia subtypes. Among PwD, those with Parkinson’s disease dementia and dementia with Lewy bodies may have higher risk of experiencing negative ATOA due to the motor and visual impairments that they experience.

Abstract Background Many people living with dementia remain undiagnosed, with diagnosis usually occurring long after signs and symptoms are present. A timely diagnosis is important for the wellbeing of the person living with dementia and the family, allowing them to plan and have access to support services sooner. The aim of this study was to identify demographic characteristics and neuropsychiatric symptoms associated with being undiagnosed, which may help clinicians be more aware of signs that could be indicative of early-stage or undetected dementia. Methods This cross-sectional study uses data from waves 1 and 2 (two years apart) of the Cognitive Function and Ageing Studies Wales (CFAS Wales). CFAS Wales participants were included who had a study assessment of dementia, as determined by the Automated Geriatric Examination for Computer Assisted Taxonomy (AGECAT) algorithm and by expert assessment, and who had had their primary care records checked for a clinical diagnosis of dementia. We identified 19 people with a diagnosis of dementia and 105 people living with undiagnosed dementia, and explored demographic characteristics and the presence or absence of a range of neuropsychiatric symptoms in the undiagnosed population using logistic regression. Results Findings suggest that people living with dementia who have better cognition, have more years of education, or live in more deprived areas are less likely to have a diagnosis. In terms of neuropsychiatric symptoms, depression and sleep problems were associated with being undiagnosed. Apathy was common across all people living with dementia, but those with a diagnosis were more likely to have severe apathy. Conclusions This study has clinical practice implications as the findings may help clinicians be more aware of characteristics and symptoms of people who are undiagnosed or who are at greater risk of remaining undiagnosed, enabling them to be more vigilant in picking up signs of dementia at an earlier stage.

Vegetable oils in the lubricant field are largely studied. Their efficiency depends on their viscosity parameters and their fatty acid composition. The actions of moringa oil used as a lubricant base and as a lubricant additive have been shown in this work. Graphite, carbon nanofibers, and carbon nanodots are carbon phases of different shapes used as solid additives. The tribological performances of lubricant blends composed of between 0.5 and 1 wt.% of particles have been evaluated using a ball-on-plane tribometer under an ambient atmosphere. No additional surfactant was used. The positive and important actions of a small amount of moringa oil added in the lubricant formulas are demonstrated. The results obtained allow us to point out the influence of the type and shape of particles. Physicochemical investigations allow us to propose a synergistic effect between the particles and moringa oil as additives in dodecane. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is a key cathodic reaction in energy-converting systems, such as fuel cells (FCs). Thus, it is of utmost importance to develop cost-effective and efficient electrocatalysts (ECs) without noble metals to substitute the Pt-based ones. This study focuses on polyoxometalate (POM)-based ECs for ORR applications. A Wells–Dawson POM salt K7 [P2W17(FeOH2)O61].·20H2O was immobilised onto graphene flakes and multiwalled carbon nanotubes doped with nitrogen, denominated as P2W17Fe@GF_N8 and P2W17Fe@MWCNT_N8. The successful preparation of the composites was proved with various characterisation techniques, including FTIR, XPS and SEM. Both materials showed good ORR performance in an alkaline medium with similar potential onset values of ~0.84 V vs. RHE and diffusion-limiting current densities of −3.9 and −3.3 mA cm−2 for P2W17Fe@MWCNT_N8 and P2W17Fe@GF_N8, respectively. Furthermore, both composites presented low Tafel slopes (48–58 mV dec−1). Chronoamperometric tests revealed that the as-prepared nanocomposites rendered a significant improvement achieving between 90 and 94% of current retention in tolerance to methanol in comparison with Pt/C, and moderate to good long-term electrochemical stability with current retentions comprised between 68 and 88%. This work reinforces the use of POMs as important electroactive species for the preparation of alternative ORR electrocatalysts, exhibiting good activity, stability and selectivity towards the ORR in the presence of methanol.

Abstract Background People living with dementia vary in awareness of their abilities. We explored awareness of the condition and diagnosis in people with mild-to-moderate dementia, and how this relates to quality of life, well-being, life satisfaction, and caregiver stress. Methods This study was a cross-sectional exploratory analysis of data from the IDEAL cohort, which recruited people with dementia living at home and available caregivers from 29 research sites in Great Britain. Our study included 917 people with mild-to-moderate dementia and 755 carers. Low and high awareness groups were derived from self-reported responses to a dementia representation measure. Logistic regression was used to explore predictors of awareness of condition and diagnosis using demographic, cognitive, functional and psychological measures, and the relationship with quality of life, well-being and life satisfaction (‘living well’), and caregiver stress. Results There were 83 people with low awareness of their condition. The remaining 834 people showed some awareness and 103 of these had high awareness of their condition and diagnosis. Psychosocial factors were stronger predictors of awareness than cognitive and functional ability. Those with higher awareness reported lower mood, and lower scores on indices of living well as well as lower optimism, self-efficacy and self-esteem. Low awareness was more likely in those aged 80y and above, and living in more socially deprived areas. No relationship was seen between caregiver stress and awareness. Conclusions Awareness of the condition and diagnosis varies in people with mild-to-moderate dementia and is relevant to the capability to live well. Awareness should be considered in person-centered clinical care.

Background: People with different types of dementia may have distinct symptoms and experiences that affect their quality of life. This study investigated whether quality of life varied across types of dementia and over time. Methods: The participants were 1555 people with mild-to-moderate dementia and 1327 carers from the IDEAL longitudinal cohort study, recruited from clinical services. As many as possible were followed for up to 6 years. Diagnoses included were Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, mixed Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia, Parkinson’s disease dementia, dementia with Lewy bodies, and frontotemporal dementia. Self- and informant-rated versions of the Quality of Life in Alzheimer’s Disease scale were used. A joint model, incorporating a mixed effects model with random effects and a survival model to account for dropout, was used to examine whether quality of life varied by dementia type at the time of diagnosis and how trajectories changed over time. Results: The strongest associations between dementia type and quality of life were seen around the time of diagnosis. For both self-ratings and informant ratings, people with Parkinson’s disease dementia or dementia with Lewy bodies had lower quality of life scores. Over time there was little change in self-rated scores across all dementia types (− 0.15 points per year). Informant-rated scores declined over time (− 1.63 points per year), with the greatest decline seen in ratings by informants for people with dementia with Lewy bodies (− 2.18 points per year). Conclusions: Self-rated quality of life scores were relatively stable over time whilst informant ratings showed a steeper decline. People with Parkinson’s disease dementia or dementia with Lewy bodies report particularly low levels of quality of life, indicating the importance of greater attention to the needs of these groups.

Activated carbons are commonly used for adsorption/depollution applications, but only a few studies are related to their lubricating properties. In order to investigate a new family of friction reducers, the tribological properties of biochars and derived activated carbons obtained from sugar cane bagasse are investigated. Activated carbons are obtained from either a physical (steam water) or chemical (with phosphoric acid) activation process. The tribological tests show that the activated carbons present very low friction coefficients, close to 0.08. The correlation of textural and tribological investigations shows that the specific surface area of the compounds as well as the microporous and mesoporous domain extensions are key parameters to optimize the friction reduction properties of activated carbons. The friction properties of the compounds are improved if the mesoporous domain extension is above 40% of the total porous volume. This study shows that local biomass waste valorization is possible and that sugar cane bagasse-derived activated carbons appear as interesting new friction reduction additives for lubricants. ObjectiveResearch suggests a decline in the mental health and wellbeing of people with dementia (PwD) during the COVID-19 pandemic; however few studies have compared data collected pre-pandemic and during the pandemic. Moreover, none have compared this change with what would be expected due to dementia progression. We explored whether PwD experienced changes in mental health and wellbeing by comparing pre-pandemic and pandemic data, and drew comparisons with another group of PwD questioned on two occasions prior to the pandemic.MethodsCommunity-dwelling PwD enrolled in the IDEAL programme were split into two groups matched for age group, sex, dementia diagnosis, and time since diagnosis. Although each group was assessed twice, one was assessed prior to and during the pandemic (pandemic group; n = 115) whereas the other was assessed prior to the pandemic (pre-pandemic group; n = 230). PwD completed measures of mood, sense of self, wellbeing, optimism, quality of life, and life satisfaction.ResultsCompared to the pre-pandemic group, the pandemic group were less likely to report mood problems, or be pessimistic, but more likely to become dissatisfied with their lives. There were no changes in continuity in sense of self, wellbeing, and quality of life.DiscussionResults suggest the pandemic had little effect on the mental health and wellbeing of PwD, with any changes observed likely to be consistent with expected rates of decline due to dementia. Although personal accounts attest to the challenges experienced, PwD appear to have been resilient to the impact of lockdown and social restrictions during the pandemic.

Flare frequency distributions represent a key approach to addressing one of the largest problems in solar and stellar physics: determining the mechanism that counterintuitively heats coronae to temperatures that are orders of magnitude hotter than the corresponding photospheres. It is widely accepted that the magnetic field is responsible for the heating, but there are two competing mechanisms that could explain it: nanoflares or Alfvén waves. To date, neither can be directly observed. Nanoflares are, by definition, extremely small, but their aggregate energy release could represent a substantial heating mechanism, presuming they are sufficiently abundant. One way to test this presumption is via the flare frequency distribution, which describes how often flares of various energies occur. If the slope of the power law fitting the flare frequency distribution is above a critical threshold, α = 2 as established in prior literature, then there should be a sufficient abundance of nanoflares to explain coronal heating. We performed >600 case studies of solar flares, made possible by an unprecedented number of data analysts via three semesters of an undergraduate physics laboratory course. This allowed us to include two crucial, but nontrivial, analysis methods: preflare baseline subtraction and computation of the flare energy, which requires determining flare start and stop times. We aggregated the results of these analyses into a statistical study to determine that α = 1.63 ± 0.03. This is below the critical threshold, suggesting that Alfvén waves are an important driver of coronal heating.

Local electricity markets can be defined broadly as 'future electricity market designs involving domestic customers, demand-side response and energy storage'. Like current deregulated electricity markets, these localised derivations present specific stochastic optimisation problems in which the dynamic and random nature of the market is intertwined with the physical needs of its participants. Moreover, the types of contracts and constraints in this setting are such that 'games' naturally emerge between the agents. Advanced modelling techniques beyond classical mathematical finance are therefore key to their analysis. This thesis aims to study contracts in these local electricity markets using the mathematical theories of stochastic optimal control and games. Chapter 1 motivates the research, provides an overview of the electricity market in Great Britain, and summarises the content of this thesis. It introduces three problems which are studied later in the thesis: a simple control problem involving demand-side management for domestic customers, and two examples of games within local electricity markets, one of them involving energy storage. Chapter 2 then reviews the literature most relevant to the topics discussed in this work. Chapter 3 investigates how electric space heating loads can be made responsive to time varying prices in an electricity spot market. The problem is formulated mathematically within the framework of deterministic optimal control, and is analysed using methods such as Pontryagin's Maximum Principle and Dynamic Programming. Numerical simulations are provided to illustrate how the control strategies perform on real market data. The problem of Chapter 3 is reformulated in Chapter 4 as one of optimal switching in discrete-time. A martingale approach is used to establish the existence of an optimal strategy in a very general setup, and also provides an algorithm for computing the value function and the optimal strategy. The theory is exemplified by a numerical example for the motivating problem. Chapter 5 then continues the study of finite horizon optimal switching problems, but in continuous time. It also uses martingale methods to prove the existence of an optimal strategy in a fairly general model. Chapter 6 introduces a mathematical model for a game contingent claim between an electricity supplier and generator described in the introduction. A theory for using optimal switching to solve such games is developed and subsequently evidenced by a numerical example. An optimal switching formulation of the aforementioned game contingent claim is provided for an abstract Markovian model of the electricity market. The final chapter studies a balancing services contract between an electricity transmission system operator (SO) and the owner of an electric energy storage device (battery operator or BO). The objectives of the SO and BO are combined in a non-zero sum stochastic differential game where one player (BO) uses a classic control with continuous effects, whereas the other player (SO) uses an impulse control (discontinuous effects). A verification theorem proving the existence of Nash equilibria in this game is obtained by recursion on the solutions to Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman variational PDEs associated with non-zero sum controller-stopper games.

Abstract Background People with dementia (PwD) vary in the degree of awareness they show about their situation, both generally concerning the diagnosis and more specifically around certain aspects or objects of awareness such as awareness of memory impairment, altered daily activities or social functioning. The extent of awareness or lack of awareness has consequences for well-being of PwD and carers, impacting on rates of hospital admission, institutionalization, mood, adjustment to diagnosis, outcomes from intervention and carer burden. An accurate estimation of a person’s awareness could therefore be useful in a clinical setting to support PwD and their carers in making appropriate choices for health and care decisions, and could facilitate safe management by health care professionals, e.g. in an acute care setting. There is a range of different approaches to measuring awareness reported in the dementia research literature, with varying estimates of the frequency of lack of awareness, reflecting different methodologies and populations. The majority of the methods have been developed for research purposes and may not be suitable for clinical use. There are no recent scoping or systematic reviews of the available methods. Method We will conduct a scoping review of published studies that have assessed awareness in people with dementia of all types, and all degrees of severity. The systematic search will include the electronic databases PubMed, Embase, PsycInfo, CINAHL, Web of Science and Cochrane Library, using search terms for dementia (“dement*” or “Alzheimer*” or “Pick’s disease”) and “awareness”, “unawareness”, “anosognosia”, “insight”, “denial”, “metacognit*” or “discrepanc*” identified from pilot searches. Findings will be mapped and described according to the method used, the setting and diagnosis and the object of awareness studied if specified. Validated measures will be identified. Discussion This scoping review will provide an overview of the methods used to measure awareness in people with dementia, allowing comparison of the methods along with identification of validated measures. The methods or components will be appraised for potential clinical use, and gaps in research will be highlighted.

47. Cognition and activities of daily living in ageing and dementia

Background: Impairments in cognition and instrumental activities of daily living (iADL) increase the risk of developing dementia; therefore, it is vital to identify cognitive predictors of potential functional decline. It is unclear how aware older people and people with dementia (PwD) are of their iADL abilities, and there are concerns over the reliability of iADL ratings. This thesis will explore predictors of iADL and the accuracy of iADL ratings in healthy older people and PwD. Method: A meta-analysis synthesised results of studies investigating the association between executive function and activities of daily living in PwD. Four empirical studies built on the meta-analysis by investigating predictors of iADL in healthy older people and PwD. Rating accuracy was investigated by comparing self-ratings with informant ratingsand by comparing self-ratings and informant ratings with performance on an objective iADL measure. Results: The Trail Making Test 4 predicted iADL in healthy older people whereas everyday memory predicted iADL in PwD. The Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination-Revised(ACE-R) predicted iADL in both healthy older people and PwD. Healthy older people underestimated their functional ability whereas their informants were more accurate. PwD were able to accurately rate their iADL ability whereas informant ratingsunderestimatedthe functional ability of PwD. Conclusions: The ACE-R may potentially help to identify older people at risk of developing functional dependence and to predict functional decline in PwD. Caution should be used when interpreting iADL ratingsmade by healthy older people as they may underestimate their ability. The finding that PwD were more able to accurately rate their iADL ability compared with their informants has important implications for the use of self-ratings and informant ratings of iADL in the dementia diagnostic process. The findings of the thesis have profound implications for the reliability of ratings of iADL made by healthy older people and PwD.
