We study substructures of the Weyl group of conformal transformations of the metric of (pseudo)Riemannian manifolds. These substructures are identified by differential constraints on the conformal factors of the transformations which are chosen such that their composition is associative. Mathematically, apart from rare exceptions, they are partial associative groupoids, not groups, so they do not have an algebra of infinitesimal transformations, but this limitation can be partially circumvented using some of their properties cleverly. We classify and discuss the substructures with two-derivatives differential constraints, the most famous of which being known as the harmonic or restricted Weyl group in the physics literature, but we also show the existence of a lightcone constraint which realizes a proper subgroup of the Weyl group. We then show the physical implications that come from invariance under the two most important substructures, concentrating on classical properties of the energy-momentum tensor and a generalization of the quantum trace anomaly. We also elaborate further on the harmonic substructure, which can be interpreted as partial gauge fixing of full Weyl invariance using BRST methods. We derive the running of the $R^2$ coupling in the Starobinsky Lagrangian that stems from integrating out quantum torsion fluctuations on a maximally symmetric Euclidean background. Our analysis is performed in a manifestly covariant way, exploiting both the recently-introduced spin-parity decomposition of torsion perturbations and the heat kernel technique. The Lagrangian we start with is the most general one involving kinetic terms and couplings to the scalar curvature that is compatible with a gauge-like symmetry for the torsion. The latter removes the twice-longitudinal vector mode from the spectrum, and it yields operators of maximum rank four., Comment: 26 pages

We propose a functional measure over the torsion tensor. We discuss two completely equivalent choices for the Wheeler-DeWitt supermetric for this field, the first one being based on its algebraic decomposition, the other inspired by teleparallel theories of gravity. The measure is formally defined by requiring the normalization of the Gaussian integral. To achieve such a result we split the torsion tensor into its spin-parity eigenstates by constructing a new, York-like, decomposition. Of course, such a decomposition has a wider range of applicability to any kind of tensor sharing the symmetries of the torsion. As a result of this procedure a functional Jacobian naturally arises, whose formal expression is given exactly in the phenomenologically interesting limit of maximally symmetric spaces. We discuss the renormalization of Einstein-Hilbert's gravity in $d=2+\epsilon$ dimensions. We show that the application of the path-integral approach leads naturally to scheme- and gauge-independent results on-shell, but also gives a natural notion of quantum metric off-shell, which is the natural argument of the effective action, even at the leading order in perturbation theory. The renormalization group of Newton's constant is consistent with the asymptotic safety scenario for quantum gravity in that it has an ultraviolet relevant fixed point. We extend the approach to the analysis of curvature square operators, understood as composites operators, which allows for the determination of the spectrum of scaling operators at the scale invariant fixed point. The analysis suggests that there is one operator that becomes relevant close to $d=4$ dimensions, while other operators previously found in the literature are either marginal or trivial on-shell., Comment: Published version: 14 pages, 1 figure

We discuss the birth of the non-perturbative approach to quantum gravity known as quantum Einstein gravity, in which the gravitational interactions are conjectured to be asymptotically safe. The interactions are assumed to be finite and consistent at high energies thanks to a scale-invariant ultraviolet completion. We present the framework on the basis of perturbative arguments that originally motivated it, paying special attention to the $\epsilon$-expansion in $d=2+\epsilon$ dimensions and the large-$N$ expansion for $N$ the number of flavors of matter fields. We discuss generalizations of the notions of projective transformations acting on affine model of Riemann-Cartan and Riemann-Cartan-Weyl gravity which preserve the projective structure of the light-cones. We show how the invariance under some projective transformations can be used to recast a Riemann-Cartan-Weyl geometry either as a model in which the role of the Weyl gauge potential is played by the torsion vector, which we call torsion-gauging, or as a model with traditional Weyl (conformal) invariance., Comment: 13 pages, published version

We present a novel way of modeling common envelope evolution in binary and few-body systems. We consider the common envelope inspiral as driven by a drag force with a power-law dependence in relative distance and velocity. The orbital motion is resolved either by direct N-body integration or by solving the set of differential equations for the orbital elements as derived using perturbation theory. Our formalism can model the eccentricity during the common envelope inspiral, and it gives results consistent with smoothed particles hydrodynamical simulations. We apply our formalism to common envelope events from binary population synthesis models and find that the final eccentricity distribution resembles the observed distribution of post-common-envelope binaries. We give a procedure to construct (quasi-)trisection diagrams for closed (pseudo-)manifolds generated by colored tensor models without restrictions on the number of simplices in the triangulation, therefore generalizing previous works in the context of crystallizations and PL-manifolds. On the basis of a limited number of reasonable axioms, we discuss the classification of all the possible universality classes of diffeomorphisms invariant metric theories of quantum gravity. We use the language of the renormalization group and adopt several ideas which originate in the context of statistical mechanics and quantum field theory. We discuss two distinct realizations of the diffeomorphism group for metric gravity, which give rise to theories that are classically equivalent, but quantum mechanically distinct. We renormalize them in $d=2+\epsilon$ dimensions, developing a new procedure for dimensional continuation of metric theories and highlighting connections with the constructions that previously appeared in the literature. Our hope is to frame candidates ultraviolet completions of quantum gravity in $d>2$ and give some perturbative mean to assess its existence in $d=4$, but also to speculate on some potential obstructions in the continuation of such candidates to finite values of $\epsilon$. We consider the leading order perturbative renormalization of the multicritical $\phi^{2n}$ models and some generalizations in curved space. We pay particular attention to the nonminimal interaction with the scalar curvature $\frac{1}{2}\xi \phi^2 R$ and discuss the emergence of the conformal value of the coupling $\xi$ as the renormalization group fixed point of its beta function at and below the upper critical dimension as a function of $n$. We determine bounds on the curvature of local patches of spacetime from the requirement of intact long-range chiral symmetry. The bounds arise from a scale-dependent analysis of gravitational catalysis and its influence on the effective potential for the chiral order parameter, as induced by fermionic fluctuations on a curved spacetime with local hyperbolic properties. The bound is expressed in terms of the local curvature scalar measured in units of a gauge-invariant coarse-graining scale. We argue that any effective field theory of quantum gravity obeying this curvature bound is safe from chiral symmetry breaking through gravitational catalysis and thus compatible with the simultaneous existence of chiral fermions in the low-energy spectrum. With increasing number of dimensions, the curvature bound in terms of the hyperbolic scale parameter becomes stronger. Applying the curvature bound to the asymptotic safety scenario for quantum gravity in four spacetime dimensions translates into bounds on the matter content of particle physics models., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures

Rank-d Tensorial Group Field Theories are quantum field theories defined on a group manifold $G^{\times d}$, which represent a non-local generalization of standard QFT, and a candidate formalism for quantum gravity, since, when endowed with appropriate data, they can be interpreted as defining a field theoretic description of the fundamental building blocks of quantum spacetime. Their renormalisation analysis is crucial both for establishing their consistency as quantum field theories, and for studying the emergence of continuum spacetime and geometry from them. In this paper, we study the renormalisation group flow of two simple classes of TGFTs, defined for the group $G=\mathbb{R}$ for arbitrary rank, both without and with gauge invariance conditions, by means of functional renormalisation group techniques. The issue of IR divergences is tackled by the definition of a proper thermodynamic limit for TGFTs. We map the phase diagram of such models, in a simple truncation, and identify both UV and IR fixed points of the RG flow. Encouragingly, for all the models we study, we find evidence for the existence of a phase transition of condensation type., Comment: 43 pages, 9 figures

We study a model of Tensorial Group Field Theory (TGFT) on $\mathbb{R}^3$ from the point of view of the Functional Renormalisation Group. This is the first attempt to apply a renormalisation procedure to a TGFT model defined over a non-compact group manifold. IR divergences (with respect to the metric on $\mathbb{R}$) coming from the non-compactness of the group are regularised via compactification, and a thermodynamic limit is then taken. We identify then IR and UV fixed points of the RG flow and find strong hints of a phase transition of the TGFT system from a symmetric to a broken or condensate phase in the IR., Comment: 7 pages, 2 Figures
