Human activity recognition is a key to a lot of applications such as healthcare and smart home. In this study, we provide a comprehensive survey on recent advances and challenges in human activity recognition (HAR) with deep learning. Although there are many surveys on HAR, they focused mainly on the taxonomy of HAR and reviewed the state-of-the-art HAR systems implemented with conventional machine learning methods. Recently, several works have also been done on reviewing studies that use deep models for HAR, whereas these works cover few deep models and their variants. There is still a need for a comprehensive and in-depth survey on HAR with recently developed deep learning methods.

Psychological resilience has emerged as a key factor in mental health during the global COVID-19 pandemic. However, no work to date has synthesised findings across review work or assessed the reliability of findings based on review work quality, so as to inform public health policy. We thus conducted a meta-review on all types of review work from the start of the pandemic (January 2020) until the last search date (June 2021). Of an initial 281 papers, 30 were included for review characteristic reporting and 15 were of sufficient review quality for further inclusion in strategy analyses. High-level strategies were identified at the individual, community, organisational, and governmental levels. Several specific training and/or intervention programmes were also identified. However, the quality of findings was insufficient for drawing conclusions. A major gap between measuring the psychological resilience of populations and evaluating the effectiveness of strategies for those populations was revealed. More empirical work, especially randomised controlled trials with diverse populations and rigorous analyses, is strongly recommended for future research.

In our aging societies, slowing and managing cognitive decline has become a significant challenge for older people, caregivers, andhealthcare providers. In the past decade, there has been an explosion in productsaimed at providing cognitive interventions for the elderly in response to the growing market need. In thispaper, we present a framework for thinking about cognitive interventions, and a product typology based onthe level of technology used and the amount of tangibility/physical interactivity that products have. Weshow how current products fit within the proposed product typology framework. We also note shortfallsthat exist in validating products in terms of their claimed cognitive interventions, and in regions of theproduct technology space that deal withproducts that have low technology and low physical interactivity.

Objective We examine the relationships between contemporary progress in on‐road vehicle automation and its coherence with an envisioned “autopia” (automobile utopia) whereby the vehicle operation task is removed from all direct human control. Background The progressive automation of on‐road vehicles toward a completely driverless state is determined by the integration of technological advances into the private automobile market; improvements in transportation infrastructure and systems efficiencies; and the vision of future driving as a crash‐free enterprise. While there are many challenges to address with respect to automated vehicles concerning the remaining driver role, a considerable amount of technology is already present in vehicles and is advancing rapidly. Methods A multidisciplinary team of experts met to discuss the most critical challenges in the changing role of the driver, and associated safety issues, during the transitional phase of vehicle automation where human drivers continue to have an important but truncated role in monitoring and supervising vehicle operations. Results The group endorsed that vehicle automation is an important application of information technology, not only because of its impact on transportation efficiency, but also because road transport is a life critical system in which failures result in deaths and injuries. Five critical challenges were identified: driver independence and mobility, driver acceptance and trust, failure management, third-party testing, and political support. Conclusion Vehicle automation is not technical innovation alone, but is a social as much as a technological revolution consisting of both attendant costs and concomitant benefits.

The picture-word interference (PWI) paradigm has been used to investigate the time course of processes involved in word retrieval, but is challenging to implement online due to dependence on measurements of vocal reaction time. We performed a series of four experiments to examine picture-word interference and facilitation effects in a form of covert picture naming, with and without gamification. A target picture was accompanied by an audio word distractor that was either unrelated, phonologically-related, associatively-related, or categorically-related to the picture. Participants were instructed to judge whether the name of the target picture ended in the phoneme assigned to the block by pressing corresponding keys as quickly and accurately as possible. Experiments 1 and 2 successfully replicated categorical interference and phonological facilitation effects at different optimal stimulus-onset-asynchronies (SOAs) between words and pictures. Experiment 3 demonstrated that a key gamification feature (collecting coins) motivated faster speed at the expense of accuracy in the gamified vs. experimental format of the task. Experiment 4 adopted the optimal SOAs and verified that the gamification reveals expected interference and facilitation effects despite the speed-accuracy tradeoff. These studies confirmed that categorical interference occurs earlier than phonological facilitation, while both processes are independent from articulation and inherent to word retrieval itself. The covert PWI paradigm and its gamification have methodological value for neuroimaging studies in which articulatory artifacts obscure word retrieval processes, and may be developed into potential online word-finding assessments that can reveal word retrieval difficulties with greater sensitivity.

In this paper we explore how memories of experience with streaming video affect Quality of Experience (QoE) indicators that are of interest to service providers and marketers. Since observations of experience are time consuming, and the effects of technical quality (TQ) are difficult to entangle from content quality (CQ), we examined the impact of a visualization methodology for assessing experiences. A study was carried out to examine how well overall technical quality (TQ) judgments for a sequence of visualized video experience (a picture of a red video playbar with yellow portions indicating disrupted video in place of actually viewed video) would correspond to overall TQ judgments made after watching a sequence of actual videos. Sequencing effects found in overall TQ ratings, made after viewing visualizations (with their overlaid disruptions) were similar to sequencing effects found after viewing actual videos. However, the sequencing effects after viewing the visualizations were less pronounced than the corresponding sequencing effects that were found after viewing actual videos. Sequences of both visualized and actually viewed videos showed significant negative end effect and trend effects (both positive and negative). There was also evidence that sequencing effects respond to relative change in TQ rather than absolute TQ.

Models that predict satisfaction with a service over time need to consider the impact of emotions and remembered quality of experience in predicting overall attitudes towards a service. However, prior research on subjective quality of experience has typically focused on experiments conducted in a single session or over a short period of time. Thus, there is a gap between our understanding of instantaneous quality of experience and long-term judgments, such as overall satisfaction, and likelihood to recommend and likelihood to churn. The goal of the study reported here was to carry out a longitudinal study that would provide initial insights into how experiences of service quality over time are accumulated into memories that then drive longer term attitudes about the service. Our longitudinal study was carried out over a period of roughly 4 weeks with around 3 sessions per week. To facilitate the study, an online service was constructed that would let participants search through YouTube videos, and that added impairments (specified according to an overall experimental design) to the videos before they were played. Participants were asked to rate several measures, including Technical Quality, after each video was viewed. They were also asked to give overall impressions after each session of five videos had been viewed. The results were analyzed in terms of both sequencing effects within sessions. and memory effects that carried over between sessions.

Curved displays promote three-dimensionality and may facilitate non-wearable virtual reality. Yet there is little design guidance on the optimal type of curvature that should be used. In this paper we have examined the perceived properties of convex and concave displays, at two different sizes. We conducted an experiment with 21 participants. Each participant was asked to make a series of binary choices after the participant viewed a display where one side was seen as convex and the opposite side was seen as concave. For each of 15 perceptual and aesthetic features, participants had to choose whether the convex or concave view/side of the display was stronger/more appropriate. Each participant made two binary choices (one for a small display viewed from its convex and concave sides, the other for a large display viewed from its convex and concave sides) for each perceptual and aesthetic feature, leading to a total of 30 judgments. Participants preferred the convex version of the small sized display and the concave version of the larger display. Individual differences were observed. Some participants generally preferred the convex displays, while others preferred the concave displays. The results are interpreted in terms of their implications for the future use of convex and concave displays in VR applications that do not use goggles.

Clustering prior to regression analysis improves the accuracy of prediction in clinical decision making. However, most previously described methods focused on numerical data only. This paper investigated how well textual features can improve the accuracy of regression predictions. Preliminary diagnosis, diagnosis summary, and drug names used in prescriptions as provided in the MIMIC II dataset were used to derive textual features. We proposed the bag-of-entities indexing method, which relies on named entity recognition, a machine learning technique used for locating and identifying words into predefined classes. The proposed technique captured meaningful phrases from texts in health records and represented them in numerical vector format. Dimensionality of the data space was reduced using principal component analysis. The additional well-tuned textual features were then combined with existing numerical features in using cluster-boosted regression to predict patient mortality in ICU. The experimental results showed prediction improvement obtained from textual features over the use of numerical features only. We found that using the proposed indexing method outperformed traditional word-vector representation approaches (bag-of-words and bag-of-bigrams) as well as a state-of-the-art approach (Doc2vec) in terms of resulting accuracy in predicting death status. Moreover, instead of directly interpreting, the identifiable individual features were grouped into types and summarized. The summarized de-identified data of textual features handled by the proposed framework can support predictive classification while also reducing privacy concerns. Grouping of similar patients based on their electronic health records also benefits physicians through the improved differential diagnosis and effective treatment planning.

Background Retrospective studies estimate Emergency Department (ED) delirium recognition at Objectives To prospectively measure delirium recognition by ED nurses and physicians, document their confidence in diagnosis and disposition, actual dispositions, and patient outcomes. Methods Prospective observational study of people ≥65 years. We assessed delirium using the Confusion Assessment Method, then asked ED staff if the patient had delirium, confidence in their assessment, if the patient could be discharged, and contacted patients 1 week postdischarge. We report proportions and 95% confidence intervals (Cls). Results We enrolled 1,493 participants; mean age was 77.9 years; 49.2% were female, 79 (5.3%, 95% CI 4.2–6.5%) had delirium. ED nurses missed delirium in 43/78 cases (55.1%, 95% CI 43.4–66.4%). Nurses considered 12/43 (27.9%) patients with unrecognized delirium safe to discharge. Median confidence in their delirium diagnosis for patients with unrecognized delirium was 7.0/10. Physicians missed delirium in 10/20 (50.0%, 95% CI 27.2–72.8) cases and considered 2/10 (20.0%) safe to discharge. Median confidence in their delirium diagnosis for patients with unrecognized delirium was 8.0/10. Fifteen patients with unrecognized delirium were sent home: 6.7% died at 1 week follow-up vs. none in those with recognized delirium and 1.1% in the rest of the cohort. Conclusion Delirium recognition by nurses and physicians was sub-optimal at ~50% and may be associated with increased mortality. Research should explore root causes of unrecognized delirium, and novel strategies to systematically improve delirium recognition and patient outcomes.

IntroductionThe global COVID-19 pandemic continues to have wide-ranging implications for health, including psychological well-being. A growing corpus of research reviews has emerged on the topic of psychological resilience in the context of the pandemic. However, this body of work has not been systematically reviewed for its quality, nor with respect to findings on the effectiveness of tools and strategies for psychological resilience. To this end, a meta-review protocol is proposed with the following objectives: (1) identify review work on the topic of psychological resilience during COVID-19; (2) assess the quality of this review work using A MeaSurement Tool to Assess systematic Reviews; (3) assess the risk of bias in this work; (4) generate a narrative summary of the key points, strengths and weaknesses; (5) identify the psychological resilience strategies that have been reviewed; (6) identify how these strategies have been evaluated for their effectiveness; (7) identify what outcomes were measured and (8) summarise the findings on strategies for psychological resilience so far, providing recommendations, if possible.Methods and analysisA systematic meta-review will be conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews for Protocols and Joanna Briggs Institute umbrella review guidelines. Electronic searches of general databases, especially Web of Science, Scopus and PubMed, will be conducted. Only results from January 2020 onwards will be considered, coinciding with the COVID-19 pandemic. Only results in English will be included. Descriptive statistics, thematic analysis and narrative summaries describing the nature of the reviewed work and evaluation of psychological resilience strategies will be carried out.Ethics and disseminationEthical approval is not needed for systematic review protocols. The results of the meta-review will be published in an international peer-reviewed journal. The raw and summarised data will be shared in the journal or other open venues.PROSPERO registration numberCRD42021235288.

This study measured Session Quality of Experience (SQE) by letting people look at visual proxies of a video play bar without having to watch the actual video, with its associated impairments and/or failures. We supplemented a laboratory study of 10 participants with two further online samples of 14, and 20, participants respectively, obtained using online surveys. Cluster analysis was carried out on the entire data set of 44 participants and clusters were obtained representing differences in sensitivity to pricing and to types of disruption. Crucially, there was no significant dependency between samples and cluster demonstrating that visualization can be used in a crowdsourcing, as well as a laboratory, context. This study demonstrates the combined use of crowdsourcing, visualizations of service experience, and cluster analysis to create more efficient, and nuanced, interpretations of SQE.

Technology questionnaires can assist in developing profiles that characterize the ability of people to use new technologies. Technology profiles may also be related to physical and cognitive abilities, and may possibly serve as proxies for constructs that may be more difficult to measure. The purpose of the research reported in this paper was to examine possible relationships between responses to questions about use of technologies and functional and frailty status as measured using a digital, tablet-based test battery. A battery of digitized cognitive and functional assessments was administered on a tablet, along with a technology questionnaire, to Canadian adults over 65 years who called 911 for paramedic services or who presented to an emergency department. 330 people between the ages of 65 and 97 years (mean = 75.8 years, standard deviation = 7.6) participated in the study. We observed significant relationships between elderly adults’ responses to questions about their technology use and their functional status and frailty scores with more technology use implying better functional status and less frailty. It is suggested that the present findings may lead to the use of more detailed technology profiles as efficient proxy estimates of overall functional ability and frailty status in elderly adults.

Walking and cognitive function are interrelated, and thus normal control of gait is perturbed by cognitive impairment. Changes in gait, as measured by quantitative analysis, can be a useful mechanism for detecting early indicators of cognitive decline. Observing changes in gait in the dual-task paradigm, i.e. when the subject walks while performing an attention-demanding task, can be a more sensitive measure. In the study reported in this paper, we developed a mobile application to perform quantitative gait assessment in the single and dual-task condition, using a smartphone’s built in sensor system. We show that the gait parameters, as measured by a mobile device, are significantly related to the corresponding parameters reported by a gold-standard motion capture system. We also demonstrate that this approach may be comparable to previously validated assessments of cognition and executive functioning. Mobile technologies offer a platform for sensitive assessment of changes in cognitive function through gait analysis in dual-task conditions. This methodology opens the way for more frequent assessments of cognition, as part of physiotherapy and rehabilitation practice.

Purpose. This study evaluates the predictive ability of patient types (clusters of similar patients) in identifying cancer patients at high risk for emergency department (ED) visits within one year (365 days) following their index date. A descriptive and retrospective cohort study of 45,356 unique cancer patients with only one primary cancer type and at least one ED visit was done using linked administrative sources of health care data. Methods. Three outcomes were investigated in this study. First, the time of ED visit following an index date was predicted using multiple linear regression. Second, those patients who visited an ED within seven days of their index date were detected using logistic regression. In addition to predicting an emergency department visit, vital status of patients was also predicted using logistic regression. We implemented the linear/logistic regression first on unclustered raw data and then on clustered data. The results of these two analyses were then compared. Conclusion. Clustering was found to contribute to a modest improvement in prediction accuracy for all three outcome variables. The results are discussed in terms of the predictive ability of patient types in development of clinical support tools with respect to privacy of patients and their implications for better allocation of resources to cancer patients.

In this paper, individually reported long-term care (LTC) quality indicators have been supplemented with the composite Qindex measure and applied to 614 homes in Ontario, Canada. This study (1) describes the overall quality performance of LTC homes across five years (2012-2017) and (2) determines if organizational factors impact quality performance. The results demonstrate significant, continuous sector-wide improvement in overall quality performance (as assessed by the Qindex) over time and significant differences in quality based on home size, operator size and ownership. This paper positions the Qindex, a global metric of quality, as a valuable tool for quality measurement and management in the LTC sector.

Curved displays are believed to create a feeling of immersiveness similar to virtual reality. However systematic studies are needed to demonstrate that this is, in fact, true and under what conditions. In an experimental study 24 participants compared five different displays (concave, convex, hemisphere, sphere and a flat display) in terms of their immersiveness and perceptibility, and they also rated their overall preferences. Both immersiveness and perceptibility affected overall preference ratings. Participants gave higher preference ratings to the convex and concave displays, which were rated high in immersiveness and perceptibility, but gave lower preference ratings to the hemisphere/spherical display which had high ratings on immersiveness but low ratings on perceptibility. The study results imply that curved displays do indeed create a feeling of immersiveness. Concave and convex displays were rated highly favorably and should receive more attention for applications where visual experience and a feeling of immersiveness is particularly important.

Purpose: Although extensive research has been carried out on the determinants of mobile or wearable health care technology (mHealth), as well as on its acceptance by patients and other health care providers, very little research has been done on physiotherapists' perspectives on the use of mHealth in their current or future practice. The aims of this study were to (1) explore the attitudes of physiotherapists toward mHealth using a modified technology acceptance model questionnaire, (2) understand the applications and delivery paradigms that are most desirable, and (3) assess the content validity of the questionnaire. Method: The questionnaire was administered online. Participants (n=76) were recruited using snowball and convenience sampling. Data were analyzed using factor analysis and partial least-squares path modelling. Results: Results indicate that perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use were related to early adoptive behaviour among participants. We found no evidence that age, gender, experience, or practice setting influenced early adoptive behaviour. Participants demonstrated favourable attitudes toward mHealth tools in clinical practice. Conclusions: This article provides initial insights into factors that are likely to be significant determinants of adoption of mHealth among physiotherapists. Further work, including qualitative research, will help to identify personal and institutional factors that will improve the acceptance of mHealth.

Background Systematic reviews are infrequently used by health care managers (HCMs) and policy-makers (PMs) in decision-making. HCMs and PMs co-developed and tested novel systematic review of effects formats to increase their use. Methods A three-phased approach was used to evaluate the determinants to uptake of systematic reviews of effects and the usability of an innovative and a traditional systematic review of effects format. In phase 1, survey and interviews were conducted with HCMs and PMs in four Canadian provinces to determine perceptions of a traditional systematic review format. In phase 2, systematic review format prototypes were created by HCMs and PMs via Conceptboard©. In phase 3, prototypes underwent usability testing by HCMs and PMs. Results Two hundred two participants (80 HCMs, 122 PMs) completed the phase 1 survey. Respondents reported that inadequate format (Mdn = 4; IQR = 4; range = 1–7) and content (Mdn = 4; IQR = 3; range = 1–7) influenced their use of systematic reviews. Most respondents (76%; n = 136/180) reported they would be more likely to use systematic reviews if the format was modified. Findings from 11 interviews (5 HCMs, 6 PMs) revealed that participants preferred systematic reviews of effects that were easy to access and read and provided more information on intervention effectiveness and less information on review methodology. –The Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) Special Interest Group on Computer-Human Interaction (SIGCHI) has been supporting research into HCI education for many years, most actively in the last six years. At its CHI2014 conference, a workshop on developing a new Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) living curriculum was held, building on three years of research and collaboration. We believe the time is now right to design and build the proposed HCI living curriculum. This paper proposes the preliminary framework for a concrete active social network of HCI scholars and educators, sharing and collaborating to develop course outlines, curricula, and teaching materials. In particular, this paper presents the use cases and design requirements of the HCI living curriculum, based on data collected from HCI educators and practitioners. Future initiatives to move the designforward by prototyping a first version of the living curriculum are also discussed.

Results of an empirical study on the privacy concerns, attitudes, and behaviour of personal health record (PHR) users are presented. The study addressed the following questions: (1) What are the factors influencing privacy concerns of PHR users? (2) To what extent do PHR users read privacy agreements and which factors are in play when they fail to read them. (3) Are the behaviour and attitudes of PHR users consistent with respect to reading privacy agreements and using privacy settings? We infer from the study results that the factors influencing privacy concerns of general online users (as reported in literature) also apply to PHR users. In spite of privacy concerns, 60% of the respondents in our study reported not reading privacy agreements. PHR users who were highly concerned about privacy did not report changing their default privacy settings (as offered in a typical social networking website) in a manner consistent with their stated attitudes towards privacy. Based on the issues identified in the study we conclude with a number of design recommendations for privacy-friendly PHR systems.

Audio and visual modalities are two common output channels in the user interfaces embedded in today’s mobile devices. However, these user interfaces typically center on the visual modality as the primary output channel, with audio output serving a secondary role. This paper argues for an increased need for shared input multimodal user interfaces for mobile devices. A shared input multimodal interface can be operated independently using a specific output modality, leaving users to choose the preferred method of interaction in different scenarios. We evaluate the value of a shared input multimodal menu system in both a single-task desktop setting and in a dynamic dual-task setting, in which the user was required to interact with the shared input multimodal menu system while driving a simulated vehicle. Results indicate that users were faster at locating a target item in the menu when visual feedback was provided in the single-task desktop setting, but in the dual-task driving setting, visual output presented a significant source of visual distraction that interfered with driving performance. In contrast, auditory output mitigated some of the risk associated with menu selection while driving. A shared input multimodal interface allows users to take advantage of multiple feedback modalities properly, providing a better overall experience.

Requirements analysis defines the goals and evaluation criteria of system design. We introduce a methodology for requirements analysis for customization based on large sample interactive testing, with the premise that analysis of user behaviour with prototypes leads to requirements discoveries. The methodology uses a relatively large sample (1) to identify relevant user subgroups, (2) to observe significant empirically determined group differences in the context of task and tool use and (3) to estimate the groups’ different requirements and derive design implications. Between 20 and 50 participants are used per test, rather than the three to five often recommended for user testing. Statistical relationships are investigated between subgroups in terms of background variables, questionnaire items, performance data, and coded verbal statements. Customization requirements are inferred from the significant differences observed between empirically determined groups. The methodological framework is illustrated in a case study involving the use of clinical resources on handheld devices by three groups of physicians. The groups were found to have different needs and preferences for evidence-based resources and device form factor, implying opportunities and necessities for group customization requirements. Relevance to industry In safety-critical domains such as health care, it is essential to assess user needs and preferences regarding devices and systems to inform appropriate customizations. We present a methodological framework and case study that demonstrates how large sample user testing can supplement typical methods of requirements analysis to provide contextualized, quantitative accounts of group differences and customization requirements.

The rapid development of blogs as a social networking tool has greatly increased the number of people who are expressing themselves in text published online. As yet little is known about the social psychology of online interaction using recently developed Web 2.0 functionalities. To what extent do principles of social psychology carry over into the online domain and how can appropriate use of those principles assist in activities such as community building, e-commerce, marketing, and personalization of services? There would seem to be a large number of novel research questions that can be posed with respect to online interaction. One pertinent question concerns the extent to which compatibility of personality influences online interaction. We investigated this question in terms of hypotheses derived from the personality research literature, using a two-part experiment. In the first study, eight participants wrote blogs in two distinct genres (personal diaries and commentaries) and rated their own personalities. In the second study 12 different participants judged the personality of authors as implied in the blog texts created in the first study. Those participants also completed a personality questionnaire and rated their attraction to the blog text author. Readers of the blog corpus were able to consistently judge the personality of the writers based solely on the text that they wrote. Moreover, they followed a well-established social rule regarding interpersonal attraction in real-life interaction. Blog readers were significantly more attracted to blog writers with more similar personalities-offering support that in a blog environment, ''birds of a feather flock together.'' Emotion word use in the blog corpus correlated with writer's personality, suggesting that online personality may be signalled by linguistic cues. The two most popular genres of blog writing, personal journal and commentary, differed in how accurately readers judged author personality traits. Based on the results obtained it is suggested that personality is an important determinant and that further research on how people communicate with blogs will be relevant to social network analysis and to marketing.

Web 2.0 tools in general, and Web video in particular, provide new ways for activists to express their viewpoints to a broad audience. In this paper we deployed tools that have been used to find subgroups automatically in social networks and applied them to the problem of distinguishing between two sides of a controversial issue based on patterns of online interaction. We explored the problem of distinguishing between anti- and pro-vaccination activists based on a social network of videos and associated comments posted on YouTube. Videos for the analysis were selected by submitting the term “vaccination” to a search on YouTube. A content analysis of the selected videos was then performed (Keelan et al, 2007) to classify videos as pro- or anti-vaccination. Then, a modified version of the SCAN method (Chin and Chignell, 2008) for identifying cohesive subgroups in social networks was applied to the social network inferred from the discussions about the videos. Results showed that a cohesive subgroup of anti-vaccination people existed in discussions around anti-vaccination videos, whereas discussions around pro-vaccination videos included both anti-vaccination and pro-vaccination people. Implications of the method and results for more general delineation of types of medical activism and the opposing camps within those camps are discussed.

This paper describes a study of content and communication processes in multidisciplinary meetings of healthcare professionals, using a Human Factors engineering approach. The goal of the study, which took place in a teaching hospital Toronto, Canada, was to understand the processes of collaboration and information exchange that take place in the meetings, and to identify potential supports for the meetings, including the use of information technology. The methodology included data collection through observation of the multidisciplinary patient care meetings, and quantitative analysis of verbal exchanges in those meetings. The results suggested the need for a standardized approach to information exchange using structured language.

Eye movement tracking and other physiological measures are used to personalize character agent behaviors (affective and instruction) in an e-learning environment. A prototype system reacts to learner's eye information in real-time, recording eye gaze and pupil dilation data (plus heart rate and skin conductance) during learning. Based on these measures, character agents inferred the attentional and motivational status of the learner and responded accordingly with affective and instructional behaviors. Character agents engage and direct the learner's attention while providing both generalized system help and personalized advice about the learning content. Feedbacks from preliminary usability studies may suggest that e-learning character agents reacting to eye gaze and physiological measures may heighten l earner concentration and lead to more effective learning.

This paper addresses issues raised by the ever-expanding role of email as a multi-faceted application that combines communication, collaboration, and task management. Individual differences analysis was used to contrast two email user interfaces in terms of their demands on users. The results of this analysis were then interpreted in terms of their implications for designing more inclusive interfaces that meet the needs of users with widely ranging abilities. The specific target of this research is the development of a new type of email message representation that makes pending tasks more visible. We describe a study that compared a new way of representing tasks in an email inbox, with a more standard representation (the Microsoft Outlook inbox). The study consisted of an experiment that examined how people with different levels of three specific cognitive capabilities (flexibility of closure, visual memory, and working memory) perform when using these representations. We then identified combinations of representation and task that are disadvantageous for people with low levels of the measured capabilities.

Frailty predicts adverse health outcomes, and the Clinical Frailty Scale (CFS) has been validated internationally to predict adverse outcomes and mortality. Emergency Departments (ED) are challenged to assess frailty due to a lack of training and limited time. We studied the agreement between ED physicians and patient self-assessments using a tablet-based CFS that includes graphics and short descriptors for each of 9 frailty categories.

There was a proliferation of electronic information sources and search engines in the 1990s. Many of these information sources became available through the ubiquitous interface of the Web browser. Diverse information sources became accessible to information professionals and casual end users alike. Much of the information was also hyperlinked, so that information could be explored by browsing as well as searching. While vast amounts of information were now just a few keystrokes and mouseclicks away, as the choices multiplied, so did the complexity of choosing where and how to look for the electronic information. Much of the complexity in information exploration at the turn of the twenty-first century arose because there was no common cataloguing and control system across the various electronic information sources. In addition, the many search engines available diAered widely in terms of their domain coverage, query methods and eAciency. Meta-search engines were developed to improve search performance by querying multiple search engines at once. In principle, meta-search engines could greatly simplify the search for electronic information by selecting a subset of first-level search engines and digital libraries to submit a query to based on the characteristics of the user, the query/topic, and the search strategy. This selection would be guided by diagnostic knowledge about which of the first-level search engines works best under what circumstances. Programmatic research is required to develop this diagnostic knowledge about first-level search engine performance. This paper introduces an evaluative framework for this type of research and illustrates its use in two experiments. The experimental results obtained are used to characterize some properties of leading search engines (as of 1998). Significant interactions were observed between search engine and two other factors (time of day and Web domain). These findings supplement those of earlier studies, providing preliminary information about the complex relationship between search engine functionality and performance in diAerent contexts. We conducted an experiment in order to investigate impacts of centralexecutive (CE) functions and modality of secondary task presentation in a dualtaskexperiment. We found that shifting ability, out of three major CE functions(inhibition, shifting, and updating) was particularly important in determiningwhether primary (pedal-tracking) task performance was better in the presence ofauditory, vs. visual, presentation of the secondary task.

Background: Walking has long been considered to be an autonomic process involving little or no higher cognitive input. In healthy adults, stride-to-stride fluctuation of many gait parameters (eg, gait speed, stride time) is on the order of just a few percent, testimony to the accuracy and reliability of the fine-tuned systems that regulate locomotion. When the systems regulating walking are disturbed as a result of neurological disease or abnormal aging, movement control may be impaired leading to increased variability of several gait parameters. Gait assessment while the patient performs a cognitively challenging secondary task (“dual-tasking”) has been widely used to assess interaction between cognition, gait, and the risk of falling. Dual-task testing is clinically relevant, as most activities of daily living require the simultaneous performance of two or more cognitive and motor tasks. Traditionally, gait variability has been difficult to quantify and has been carried out in specialized laboratory settings. Current motion analysis systems are expensive, require trained personnel to operate, and limit evaluation to a few strides. Advances in consumer electronics allow for the development of a system that is cheap, unobtrusive, and easy-to-use in unconstrained ambulation. In addition, the use of a portable electronic device facilitates the development of a gamified Go/NoGo response inhibition task, which enables an automated approach to measuring relative trade-off in dual-task conditions. Objective: Our primary objectives were as follows: (1) to develop a simple mobile-based tool to enable collection, aggregation, and visualization of gait variability data through a co-design process with clinicians; (2) to examine the feasibility of integrating a gamified dual-task assessment; and (3) to answer the question “If we build it, will they come?” Our secondary objective was to explore the factors that influence rehabilitation therapists’ willingness to use mobile/wearable technology in clinical practice. Methods: We took an iterative design approach to incorporate user feedback during the development of the mobile application. To validate the gait assessment data, we utilized a convenience sample of 12 healthy adults and evaluated 30 seconds of walking data using the mobile application against a Vicon Motion Capture System. In parallel, we developed a questionnaire to gain insight into the barriers and motivating factors that affect use of consumer technology in clinical practice by physiotherapists. The questionnaire was pilot tested for content validity and internal consistency at a rehabilitation center and was distributed online. Background: Developed nations are currently facing a demographic shift towards a higher proportion of elderly people and increasing age-related health concerns. Elderly adults often enter into the health care system through emergency services. As a result, emergency departments (EDs) are an opportune environment for cognitive screening to improve patient outcomes. Existing methods are not designed for use in EDs and require administration by a trained test administrator. As an alternative, we suggest serious games as screening tools that can be self-administered or used with minimal assistance in emergency care. The use of validated and reliable serious games can encourage more efficient and engaging cognitive screening. Objective: Our objective was to investigate the feasibility and usability issues identified in the process of evaluating the validity and reliability of a game-based cognitive screening tool administered on an interactive tablet, for use by elderly adults in emergency care. Methods: We carried out a study in a hospital ED to evaluate the validity of the serious game with elderly adults over the age of 70 years (N=146). Validity was assessed in terms of the correlation of game performance with outcomes of current assessment methods. Comparative assessments included the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), and the Confusion Assessment Method (CAM). We also assessed the reliability of our game-based assessment tool in a hospital ED for a large subset of the patients who underwent a revised protocol involving follow-up sessions at a minimum of every 8 hours (n=127). In both studies, research personnel (RP) administered the standard cognitive assessments and then asked the patients to play the serious game. Recruitment for the reliability study overlapped with our validation study, with 56 potential overlap cases. Results: In our validation group, 141 of 146 patients consented to play the serious game. Heart failure patients require complex, long-term care. Research shows that self-care education improves health outcomes of these patients. This study reports the results of a randomized trial which compared the effects of two remote educational interventions on heart failure patients' knowledge of self-care practices. The first group reviewed self-care content on a Web site and had email access to a cardiac nurse. The second group had access to the Web site, and participated in four telephone-based sessions with the cardiac nurse. The test scores of both groups significantly improved following the intervention. However, the post-intervention test scores of the group that included telephone sessions were significantly higher than the scores for the group that had access to the Web site only. These results show a benefit to learning of a teleconferencing intervention that is over and above the benefit of an intervention based on Web information and email access alone.

The Graphical user interface has traditionally supported personal productivity, efficiency, and usability. With computer supported cooperative work, the focus has been on typical people, doing typical work in a highly rational model of interaction. Recent trends towards mobility, and emotional and universal design are extending the user interface paradigm beyond the routine. As computing moves into the hand and away from the desktop, there is a greater need for dealing with emotions and distractions. Busy and distracted people represent a new kind of disability, but one that will be increasingly prevalent. In this panel we examine the current state of the art, and prospects for future collaboration in non-normative computing requirements. This panel draws together researchers who are studying the problems of mobility, emotion and universality. The goal of the panel is to discuss how progress in these areas will change the nature of future collaboration.

One of the challenges for people seeking health information online is the difficulty in locating health Websites that are personally relevant, credible and useful. We developed a Web-based recommender system in order to help address this problem in the context of prostate cancer. We are conducting an online randomized controlled trial to evaluate the accuracy of its recommendations and to compare the efficacy of content-based and collaborative filtering.

Background To identify individual differences in physicians' needs for the presentation of evidence resources and preferences for mobile devices. Methods Within-groups analysis of responses to semi-structured interviews. Interviews consisted of using prototypes in response to task-based scenarios. The prototypes were implemented on two different form factors: a tablet style PC and a pocketPC. Participants were from three user groups: general internists, family physicians and medicine residents, and from two different settings: urban and semi-urban. Verbal protocol analysis, which consists of coding utterances, was conducted on the transcripts of the testing sessions. Statistical relationships were investigated between staff physicians' and residents' background variables, self-reported experiences with the interfaces, and verbal code frequencies. Results 47 physicians were recruited from general internal medicine, family practice clinics and a residency training program. The mean age of participants was 42.6 years. Physician specialty had a greater effect on device and information-presentation preferences than gender, age, setting or previous technical experience. Family physicians preferred the screen size of the tablet computer and were less concerned about its portability. Residents liked the screen size of the tablet, but preferred the portability of the pocketPC. Internists liked the portability of the pocketPC, but saw less advantage to the large screen of the tablet computer (F[2,44] = 4.94, p = .012). Conclusion Different types of physicians have different needs and preferences for evidence-based resources and handheld devices. This study shows how user testing can be incorporated into the process of design to inform group-based customization.

An evaluation framework and simulator of an interactive information retrieval system (SIIIRS) is introduced. SIIIRS is designed to allow researchers to conduct many exploratory studies that can help to narrow the focus of future human subject studies by showing which differences in information exploration style and functionality are likely to produce significant differences in future human subject studies. An experiment was carried out to demonstrate how SIIIRS could be used to predict performance when using different search strategies in a dynamic hypertext environment. The analysis of both the performance and behavioural measures obtained in the experiment showed significant differences in how the different agents (search strategies) performed when using different combinations of query difficulty, newness, and query tail size (as defined in the research reported in this paper). Overall, the agents differed in terms of their behaviours compared to one another and in terms of their interaction with the simulator parameter of newness and the dynamic hypertext control parameter of query tail size. The analysis of the behavioural measures showed the same pattern as found in the performance measures, with query tail size (an indicator of how easy it is to modify the topic during the search) having a strong influence on performance. The results of this study are discussed in terms of their implications for future automated evaluation of hypertext search interfaces.
