1. A facultative mutualism between habitat-forming species enhances the resistance of rocky shore communities to heat waves

Abstract

Heat waves have increased in frequency, duration, and magnitude in recent decades, causing mass mortality events in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Arguably, mass mortalities of habitat-forming organisms – i.e., dominant sessile organisms that define habitats via their own physical structure – would be amongst the most dramatic impact of heat waves because of their negative, cascading consequences on their associated biodiversity. However, the resistance of habitat-forming organisms to heat waves can be enhanced if they associate with secondary habitat formers able to tolerate and modulate extreme heat levels. Here we show that a seaweed of the Porphyra/Pyropia (P/P) clade can shield primary habitat-forming mussels, Brachidontes rodriguezii, from the impacts of extreme temperatures in a southwestern Atlantic rocky intertidal shore. By means of P/P removal experiments and surveys, we illustrate that P/P cover (a) buffers temperatures in the understory mussel beds during daytime air exposure periods in the summer, (b) reduces mussel mortality and leads to increased mussel body condition during warm summer periods, and (c) can prevent mass mortality of mussels during the course of a heat wave. Additionally, by means of a mussel removal experiment we illustrate that mussel cover is critical for P/P establishment, which is in consonance with the remarkably higher P/P densities and cover observed in mussel beds relative to exposed rock surfaces across a ~70 km coastal range. Collectively, these findings reveal a facultative mutualism where mussels provide a favorable substrate for P/P colonization and P/P attenuates heat mediated mortality on mussels. The ability of P/P to enhance the resistance of mussel beds to extreme heat events and the occurrence of similar P/P-mussel associations during spring-summer at globally dispersed sites suggests a widespread importance of P/P for the stability of mussel beds and their associated communities under warming climates.

Abstract

The expert group on scenarios and models of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services initiated the development of the Nature Futures Framework for developing scenarios of positive futures for nature, to help inform assessments of policy options. This new scenarios and modelling Framework seeks to open up diversity and plurality of perspectives by differentiating three main value perspectives on nature – Nature for Nature (intrinsic values of nature), Nature for Society (instrumental values) and Nature as Culture (relational values). This paper describes how the Nature Futures Framework can be applied in modelling to support policy processes by identifying key interventions for change in realizing a diversity of desirable futures. First, the paper introduces and elaborates on key building blocks of the framework for developing qualitative scenarios and translating them into quantitative scenarios: i) multiple value perspectives on nature and the Nature Futures frontier representing diverse preferences, ii) incorporating mutual and key feedbacks of social-ecological systems in Nature Futures scenarios, and iii) indicators describing the evolution of social-ecological systems with complementary knowledge and data. This paper then presents three possible application approaches to modelling Nature Futures scenarios to support the i) review, ii) implementation and iii) design phases of policy processes. The main objective of this paper is to facilitate the integration of the relational values of nature in models, through improved indicators and other forms of evidence, and to strengthen modelled linkages across biodiversity, ecosystems, nature’s contributions to people, and quality of life to identify science- and knowledge-based interventions and to enhance ecological understanding for achieving sustainable futures. The paper aims at stimulating the development of new scenarios and models based on this new framework by a wide community of modelers, and the testing and possible further development of the framework, particularly in the context of future IPBES assessments.

Abstract

Early naturalists suggested that predation intensity increases toward the tropics, affecting fundamental ecological and evolutionary processes by latitude, but empirical support is still limited. Several studies have measured consumption rates across latitude at large scales, with variable results. Moreover, how predation affects prey community composition at such geographic scales remains unknown. Using standardized experiments that spanned 115° of latitude, at 36 nearshore sites along both coasts of the Americas, we found that marine predators have both higher consumption rates and consistently stronger impacts on biomass and species composition of marine invertebrate communities in warmer tropical waters, likely owing to fish predators. Our results provide robust support for a temperature-dependent gradient in interaction strength and have potential implications for how marine ecosystems will respond to ocean warming.

4. Edge function in patchy mussel bed habitats: variation across nearby rocky shore sites

Abstract

Mussels form dense three-dimensional beds that serve as habitat to other species. In rocky shores, these beds are often interspersed by gaps due to patchy dislodgement/mortality caused by the action of waves, predators, and/or extreme temperatures. Although mussel patches and gaps are known to support distinctive invertebrate communities, variations in invertebrate habitat function between the interior and edges of mussel patches and gaps were not yet examined. Here, we evaluated variations in habitat properties and invertebrate composition between the edge and interior of mussel (Brachidontes rodriguezii) patches and gaps at three rocky shore sites in the Southwestern Atlantic. Our results indicate that the interior and edge of mussel patches differ in terms of mussel size and density (i.e., a surrogate of habitat structure) and the amount of sediments they accumulate. However, this does not directly translate into consistent differences on temperature, desiccation, and invertebrate composition across sites. As it concerns to gaps, we generally observed increased limpet (Siphonaria lesonii) densities at their edges, which suggests that they encounter favourable conditions by the perimeter of mussel patches. The lack of consistent edge effects on the invertebrates of mussel patches suggests that their species composition would remain largely unaffected by expected increases in gap and edge habitat formation due to ongoing increases in the frequency and magnitude of storms and heat waves. Yet, if increased availability of edge habitats leads to increased overall density of limpets in these rocky shores, then changes could be expected in algal production, composition, and dynamics.

Abstract

1. Scientists have repeatedly argued that transformative, multiscale global scenarios are needed as tools in the quest to halt the decline of biodiversity and achieve sustainability goals. 2. As a first step towards achieving this, the researchers who participated in the scenarios and models expert group of the Intergovernmental Science‐Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) entered into an iterative, participatory process that led to the development of the Nature Futures Framework (NFF). 3. The NFF is a heuristic tool that captures diverse, positive relationships of humans with nature in the form of a triangle. It can be used both as a boundary object for continuously opening up more plural perspectives in the creation of desirable nature scenarios and as an actionable framework for developing consistent nature scenarios across multiple scales. 4. Here we describe the methods employed to develop the NFF and how it fits into a longer term process to create transformative, multiscale scenarios for nature. We argue that the contribution of the NFF is twofold: (a) its ability to hold a plurality of perspectives on what is desirable, which enables the development of joint goals and visions and recognizes the possible convergence and synergies of measures to achieve these visions and (b), its multiscale functionality for elaborating scenarios and models that can inform decision‐making at relevant levels, making it applicable across specific places and perspectives on nature. 5. If humanity is to achieve its goal of a more sustainable and prosperous future rooted in a flourishing nature, it is critical to open up a space for more plural perspectives of human–nature relationships. As the global community sets out to develop new goals for biodiversity, the NFF can be used as a navigation tool helping to make diverse, desirable futures possible Los científicos han argumentado repetidamente que los escenarios globales, transformadores y de escalas múltiples son necesarios como herramientas para afrontar la pérdida de biodiversidad y lograr los objetivos de sostenibilidad. Como un primer paso para lograrlo, el grupo de expertos en escenarios y modelos de la Plataforma Intergubernamental científico‐normativa en Biodiversidad y Servicios Ecosistémicos (IPBES) mediante un proceso iterativo, participativo desarrollaron el Marco de los Futuros de la Naturaleza (MFN). EL MFN es una herramienta heurística que captura las diversas relaciones positivas existentes entre los seres humanos y la naturaleza y se representa en la forma de un triángulo. Puede ser usado tanto como un objeto para generar perspectivas plurales en la creación de escenarios deseables de la naturaleza o como un marco para desarrollar escenarios de la naturaleza consistentes a través de escalas múltiples. Aquí, describimos los métodos empleados para desarrollar el MFN y como este se ajusta a un proceso de largo plazo para crear escenarios transformadores y a diferentes escalas para el futuro de la naturaleza. La contribución de los MFN persigue dos objetivos principales: a) la posibilidad de mantener una pluralidad de perspectivas en aquello que es deseable, lo que permite el desarrollo de un conjunto de objetivos y visiones reconociendo la posible convergencia y sinergias de las medidas para alcanzarlos y b) su funcionalidad a escalas múltiples para elaborar escenarios y modelos que puedan informar a los tomadores de decisiones a niveles relevantes, haciéndolo aplicable a través de perspectivas específicas sobre la naturaleza. Abstract

The density, size, and morphology of coastal invertebrate species often predictably vary with latitude. In this study we evaluate whether the density, size, and morphology of the pulmonate limpet, Siphonaria lessonii, in the Southwestern Atlantic varies in agreement to the predictions of the abundance-centre hypothesis (i.e., higher densities by the center of the species range), Bergmann´s rule (i.e., increasing body size with latitude), and Allen´s rule (i.e., decreasing body surface to volume ratio with latitude). Our results indicate that the upper density bounds of S. lessonii decrease with latitude across our study range, which may either contradict expectations of the abundant-centre model (i.e, if assuming a Temperate Southwestern Atlantic/Magellanic distribution; 27°S in the Atlantic to 42°S in the Pacific) or represent a partial trend within a broader scale, abundant-centre pattern (i.e., when considering a panmictic distribution from the Temperate Southwestern Atlantic to the Temperate Southeastern Pacific; 27°S in the Atlantic to 5°S in the Pacific). Limpet shell length (i.e., a surrogate of body size) was not significantly related to latitude (cf. Bergmann´s rule). The two principal components of morphological variation in limpet shells – which increased with decreasing shell surface to volume ratio – showed positive and negative relationships with latitude (i.e., contradictory support to Allen´s rule). From these analyses, we conclude (a) that the size and morphology of S. lessonii are primarily controlled by local conditions rather than broad-scale climatic or environmental gradients and, (b) that geographic marginality does not means reduced performance in this species at least as it concerns to abundance and maximum size. Abstract

Scenarios are powerful tools toenvision how nature might respondto different pathways of futurehuman development and policy choices1.Most scenarios developed for globalenvironmental assessments have exploredimpacts of society on nature, such asbiodiversity loss, but have not includednature as a component of socioeconomicdevelopment2. They ignore policyobjectives related to nature protectionand neglect nature?s role in underpinningdevelopment and human well-being.This approach is becoming untenablebecause targets for human developmentare increasingly connected with targetsfor nature, such as in the United Nations?Sustainable Development Goals. The nextgeneration of scenarios should explorealternative pathways to reach theseintertwined targets, including potentialsynergies and trade-offs between natureconservation and other developmentgoals, as well as address feedbacks betweennature, nature?s contributions to people,and human well-being. Abstract

Ecosystem engineers can modify habitat, creating structural microhabitats. This structural complexity can affect species richness. Marine ecosystem engineers are able to produce local effects in combination with environmental variables (e.g. to create more humid habitat during low tides). We tested the hypotheses that if there is a relationship between mussel morphology and environmental factors, mussels would be larger at warmer than at cooler locations, and in areas where 2 species of mussels overlap, size and biomass will decrease and density will increase. At a smaller scale, we predicted that there is a relationship between the assemblage structure and hardness of the substratum and sediment content of a mussel bed. Using a nested design, we measured density, biomass and size of 2 species of mussels, Brachidontes rodriguezii and Perumytilus (Brachidontes) purpuratus, and diversity of species associated with mussel beds at 2 rocky intertidal sites at each of 4 shores along the northern Argentinean coast. These variables were correlated with oceanographic conditions and local characteristics. Significant correlations were found between intertidal assemblages and local factors. The largest specimens of B. rodriguezii and P. purpuratus were found at the warmer shores. In areas where they overlapped, size, biomass and density of P. purpuratus were lower, although B. rodriguezii did not change. The mean abundance of invertebrates associated with a mussel bed showed significant differences among shores. These 2 species of mytilids coexist over a small area, and although these species are very similar in their biological and ecological function, the fauna associated with their matrices are very different. Abstract

Intraspecific competition for space is generally invoked as the chief process limiting crowding in sessile or highly sedentary marine invertebrates. However, the mechanisms by which high conspecific density induces individual removal or mortality, in turn restraining crowding in these organisms, generally remain uninvestigated. Here we illustrate that mussel crowding in a southwestern Atlantic rocky intertidal shore is limited by a combination of wave action and space limitation. Brachidontes rodriguezii mussel beds at this site occur primarily as a single layer of individuals because wave forces remove multilayered mussel hummocks quickly after they develop. Mussels in hummocks show lower attachment strength than those in the single-layered matrix. Accordingly, wave conditions associated with the passage of cold fronts (i.e. transition zones from warm air to cold air accompanied by moderate to strong winds and wave action, with 7 d average recurrence times based on historical weather data) cause detectable mussel dislodgment in a high proportion of hummocks but have virtually no impact on single-layered areas. Since wave action is the proximate cause of mussel dislodgment, upper limits to crowding in this species would not be fixed to a particular level of space occupation (i.e. as predictable from inter-individual interference alone) but would be variable in space and time depending on wave exposure. This example suggests a mechanism of population control where the impact of a physical factor on population size is larger at higher population density and supports early hypotheses about the occurrence of density-dependent population control by physical factors when the availability of safe sites is limiting.
