A study on the nanoscale electrocrystallization of pure Sb and the compound semiconductor AlSb on Au(111) is conducted by in situ scanning probe techniques (STM and STS). Conductance spectra of these clusters display the main features of the electronic structure of the bulk semiconductor AlSb, with a band gap of 2.0 plusmn 0.2 eV.

Microorganisms are potent contributors to maintaining a safe environment as they are able to degrade organic toxicants. For environmental applications, mostly bacteria are used while fungal strains have received less attention. However, they are able to degrade highly persistent organic contaminants and survive extreme conditions, and may thus be promising organisms. To find new fungal candidates for these applications, twelve soil samples from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) contaminated sites in Austria were used to isolate fungal strains. A microplate screening method using PAH contaminated soil as inoculant was set up to isolate fungal strains being able to live in presence of toluene, hexadecane, or polychlorinated biphenyl 126. Not many microbial strains are known that degrade these three contaminants, while the PAH contamination acted as selective pressure for the soil microbiota. After obtaining pure cultures, the fungal strains were further screened for their ability to live in the presence of one of the three contaminant substrates. The potential for technical application of the 11 best performing strains, identified using ITS and 18S rDNA, is discussed. The presented microtiter plate screening method is a cost efficient and quick approach to identify fungal strains for pollutant degradation and results in candidates with a high relevance for bioremediation techniques.

Abstract Introduction Perivascular epitheloid cell tumours are rare mesenchymal neoplasms characterized by a proliferation of perivascular cells with an epitheloid phenotype and expression of myomelanocytic markers. Case presentation Here we present the case of a cystic perivascular epitheloid cell tumour of the retroperitoneum associated with multifocal lung lesions. A 27-year-old woman underwent laparotomy to remove a 10 × 6 × 4 cm sized retroperitoneal mass. The resected specimen was subjected to frozen and permanent histological sections with conventional and immunohistochemical stains, including antibodies against HMB45. The tumour displayed the typical morphological and immunohistochemical features of a perivascular epitheloid cell tumour. Focal necrosis and a proliferative index of 10% suggested a malignant potential. Moreover, postoperative computed tomography scans demonstrated multiple lung lesions, which were radiologically interpreted as being most likely compatible with lymphangioleiomyomatosis. Conclusion Since lymphangioleiomyomatosis, an otherwise benign condition, belongs to the family of perivascular epitheloid cell tumours, it cannot be excluded that the lung lesions in this case in fact represent metastases from the retroperitoneal perivascular epitheloid cell tumour rather than independent neoplasms. More experience with this new and unusual tumour entity is clearly needed in order to define reliable criteria for benign or malignant behaviour.

Background: Patient reported outcome measures (PROMs) can be used to assess knee function following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. Intra-operatively, femoral and tibial tunnels are created to accommodate the new ACL graft. It is postulated that there is an optimum position and orientation of these tunnels and that outcomes from this procedure are affected by their position., Aim: To evaluate the influence of graft tunnel position on early to mid-term clinical outcomes following ACL reconstruction., Methods: Six PROMs were collected following ACL reconstruction which included the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS), International Knee Documentation Committee, Lysholm, Tegner, EuroQol-5 Dimension-5 level, and Short Form 12-item Health Survey. A total of 8 radiological parameters were measured from post-operative X-rays relating to graft tunnel positions. This data was analysed to assess for any correlations between graft tunnel position and post-operative PROMs., Results: A total of 87 patients were included in the study with a mean post-operative follow-up of 2.3 years (range 1 to 7 years). Posterior position of tibial tunnel was associated with improved KOOS quality of life (rho = 0.43, P = 0.002) and EQ-5D VAS (rho = 0.36, P = 0.010). Anterior position of EndoButton femoral tunnel was associated with an improved EQ-5D index (rho = -0.38, P = 0.028). There were no other significant correlations between any of the other radiological parameters and PROM scores., Conclusion: Overall, graft tunnel position had very little correlation with clinical outcomes following ACL reconstruction. Violence is a key mechanism in the reproduction of community disadvantage. The existing evidence indicates that violence in a community impacts the intergenerational mobility of its residents. The current study explores the possibility of a reverse relationship. This study provisionally tests the hypothesis that depressed intergenerational mobility in a community may also spark subsequent community violence. We deploy a county measure of intergenerational mobility captured during early adulthood for a cohort of youth born between 1980 and 1986 and raised in low-income families [R. Chetty, N. Hendren, Quart. J. Econom. 133 , 1163-1228 (2018)]. We model the relationship between county mobility scores and two county-level outcomes: violent crime and homicide. We find that a county's level of intergenerational mobility as measured by the Chetty-Hendren data is a major predictor of its rate of violent crime and homicide in 2008, when the youth in Chetty's mobility cohort were young adults (the same age the mobility measure was captured). In fact, mobility is a significantly stronger and more consistent predictor of community violent crime and homicide rates than more commonly used factors like poverty, inequality, unemployment, and law enforcement presence., Competing Interests: Competing interests statement:The authors declare no competing interest.

Background: The development of obesity-associated comorbidities such as type 2 diabetes (T2D) and hepatic steatosis has been linked to selected microRNAs in individual studies; however, an unbiased genome-wide approach to map T2D induced changes in the miRNAs landscape in human liver samples, and a subsequent robust identification and validation of target genes are still missing., Methods: Liver biopsies from age- and gender-matched obese individuals with (n=20) or without (n=20) T2D were used for microRNA microarray analysis. The candidate microRNA and target genes were validated in 85 human liver samples, and subsequently mechanistically characterized in hepatic cells as well as by dietary interventions and hepatic overexpression in mice., Results: Here, we present the human hepatic microRNA transcriptome of type 2 diabetes in liver biopsies and use a novel seed prediction tool to robustly identify microRNA target genes, which were then validated in a unique cohort of 85 human livers. Subsequent mouse studies identified a distinct signature of T2D-associated miRNAs, partly conserved in both species. Of those, human-murine miR-182-5 p was the most associated with whole-body glucose homeostasis and hepatic lipid metabolism. Its target gene LRP6 was consistently lower expressed in livers of obese T2D humans and mice as well as under conditions of miR-182-5 p overexpression. Weight loss in obese mice decreased hepatic miR-182-5 p and restored Lrp6 expression and other miR-182-5 p target genes. Hepatic overexpression of miR-182-5 p in mice rapidly decreased LRP6 protein levels and increased liver triglycerides and fasting insulin under obesogenic conditions after only seven days., Conclusions: By mapping the hepatic miRNA-transcriptome of type 2 diabetic obese subjects, validating conserved miRNAs in diet-induced mice, and establishing a novel miRNA prediction tool, we provide a robust and unique resource that will pave the way for future studies in the field. Background: It remains unknown whether there is a causal relationship between intraoperative hypotension and postoperative neurocognitive disorders. We tested the hypothesis that personalised-compared to routine-intraoperative blood pressure management reduces the incidence of postoperative neurocognitive disorders in patients having major noncardiac surgery., Methods: In this single-centre trial, 328 elective major noncardiac surgery patients were randomly allocated to receive personalised blood pressure management (i.e. maintaining intraoperative mean arterial pressure [MAP] above preoperative baseline MAP from automated 24-h blood pressure monitoring) or routine blood pressure management (i.e. maintaining MAP above 65 mm Hg). The primary outcome was the incidence of neurocognitive disorders (composite of delayed neurocognitive recovery and delirium) between postoperative days 3 and 7., Results: The primary outcome, neurocognitive disorders, occurred in 18 of 147 patients (12%) assigned to personalised and 21 of 148 patients (14%) assigned to routine blood pressure management (odds ratio [OR]=0.84, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.40-1.75, P =0.622). Delayed neurocognitive recovery occurred in 17 of 146 patients (12%) assigned to personalised and 17 of 145 patients (12%) assigned to routine blood pressure management (OR=0.99, 95% CI: 0.45-2.17, P =0.983).
