1. Probing magneto-ionic microstructure towards the Vela pulsar using a prototype SKA-Low station

Abstract: The Vela pulsar (J0835-4510) is known to exhibit variations in Faraday rotation and dispersion on multi-decade timescales due to the changing sightline through the surrounding Vela supernova remnant and the Gum Nebula. Until now, variations in Faraday rotation towards Vela have not been studied on timescales less than around a decade. We present the results of a high-cadence observing campaign carried out with the Aperture Array Verification System 2 (AAVS2), a prototype SKA-Low station, which received a significant bandwidth upgrade in 2022. We collected observations of the Vela pulsar and PSR J0630-2834 (a nearby pulsar located outside the Gum Nebula), spanning $\sim 1\,\mathrm{yr}$ and $\sim 0.3\,\mathrm{yr}$ respectively, and searched for linear trends in the rotation measure (RM) as a function of time. We do not detect any significant trends on this timescale ($\sim$months) for either pulsar, but the constraints could be greatly improved with more accurate ionospheric models. For the Vela pulsar, the combination of our data and historical data from the published literature have enabled us to model long-term correlated trends in RM and dispersion measure (DM) over the past two decades. We detect a change in DM of $\sim 0.3\,\mathrm{cm}^{-3}\,\mathrm{pc}$ which corresponds to a change in electron density of $\sim 10^5\,\mathrm{cm}^{-3}$ on a transverse length scale of $\sim$1-2 au. The apparent magnetic field strength in the time-varying region changes from $240^{+30}_{-20}\,\mu\mathrm{G}$ to $-6.2^{+0.7}_{-0.9}\,\mu\mathrm{G}$ over the time span of the data set. As well as providing an important validation of polarimetry, this work highlights the pulsar monitoring capabilities of SKA-Low stations, and the niche science opportunities they offer for high-precision polarimetry and probing the microstructure of the magneto-ionic interstellar medium., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables, published in PASA

2. Hierarchical mixtures of Unigram models for short text clustering: the role of Beta-Liouville priors

Abstract: This paper presents a variant of the Multinomial mixture model tailored for the unsupervised classification of short text data. Traditionally, the Multinomial probability vector in this hierarchical model is assigned a Dirichlet prior distribution. Here, however, we explore an alternative prior--the Beta-Liouville distribution--which offers a more flexible correlation structure than the Dirichlet. We examine the theoretical properties of the Beta-Liouville distribution, focusing on its conjugacy with the Multinomial likelihood. This property enables the derivation of update equations for a CAVI (Coordinate Ascent Variational Inference) variational algorithm, facilitating the approximate posterior estimation of model parameters. Additionally, we propose a stochastic variant of the CAVI algorithm that enhances scalability. 3. DARES: Depth Anything in Robotic Endoscopic Surgery with Self-supervised Vector-LoRA of the Foundation Model

Abstract: Robotic-assisted surgery (RAS) relies on accurate depth estimation for 3D reconstruction and visualization. While foundation models like Depth Anything Models (DAM) show promise, directly applying them to surgery often yields suboptimal results. Fully fine-tuning on limited surgical data can cause overfitting and catastrophic forgetting, compromising model robustness and generalization. Although Low-Rank Adaptation (LoRA) addresses some adaptation issues, its uniform parameter distribution neglects the inherent feature hierarchy, where earlier layers, learning more general features, require more parameters than later ones. To tackle this issue, we introduce Depth Anything in Robotic Endoscopic Surgery (DARES), a novel approach that employs a new adaptation technique, Vector Low-Rank Adaptation (Vector-LoRA) on the DAM V2 to perform self-supervised monocular depth estimation in RAS scenes. To enhance learning efficiency, we introduce Vector-LoRA by integrating more parameters in earlier layers and gradually decreasing parameters in later layers. We also design a reprojection loss based on the multi-scale SSIM error to enhance depth perception by better tailoring the foundation model to the specific requirements of the surgical environment. The proposed method is validated on the SCARED dataset and demonstrates superior performance over recent state-of-the-art self-supervised monocular depth estimation techniques, achieving an improvement of 13.3% in the absolute relative error metric. Abstract: The current standard model of cosmology successfully describes a variety of measurements, but the nature of its main ingredients, dark matter and dark energy, remains unknown. Euclid is a medium-class mission in the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 programme of the European Space Agency (ESA) that will provide high-resolution optical imaging, as well as near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy, over about 14,000 deg^2 of extragalactic sky. In addition to accurate weak lensing and clustering measurements that probe structure formation over half of the age of the Universe, its primary probes for cosmology, these exquisite data will enable a wide range of science. This paper provides a high-level overview of the mission, summarising the survey characteristics, the various data-processing steps, and data products. Abstract: Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are energetic, millisecond-duration radio pulses observed at extragalactic distances and whose origins are still a subject of heated debate. A fraction of the FRB population have shown repeating bursts, however it's still unclear whether these represent a distinct class of sources. We investigated the bursting behaviour of FRB 20220912A, one of the most active repeating FRBs known thus far. In particular, we focused on its burst energy distribution, linked to the source energetics, and its emission spectrum, with the latter directly related to the underlying emission mechanism. We monitored FRB 20220912A at $408$ MHz with the Northern Cross radio telescope and at $1.4$ GHz using the $32$-m Medicina Grueff radio telescope. Additionally, we conducted $1.2$ GHz observations taken with the upgraded Giant Meter Wave Radio Telescope (uGMRT) searching for a persistent radio source coincident with FRB 20220912A, which included high energy observations in the $0.3-10$ keV, $0.4-100$ MeV and $0.03-30$ GeV energy range. We report $16$ new bursts from FRB 20220912A at $408$ MHz during the period between October 16$^{\rm th}$ 2022 and December 31$^{\rm st}$ 2023. Their cumulative spectral energy distribution follows a power law with slope $\alpha_E = -1.3 \pm 0.2$ and we measured a repetition rate of $0.19 \pm 0.03$ hr$^{-1}$ for bursts having a fluence of $\mathcal{F} \geq 17$ Jy ms. Furthermore, we report no detections at 1.4 GHz for $\mathcal{F} \geq 20$ Jy ms. These non-detections imply an upper limit of $\beta < -2.3$, with $\beta$ being the $408$ MHz $-$ $1.4$ GHz spectral index of FRB 20220912A. This is inconsistent with positive $\beta$ values found for the only two known cases in which an FRB has been detected in separate spectral bands. Abstract: Preceding a core-collapse supernova, various processes produce an increasing amount of neutrinos of all flavors characterized by mounting energies from the interior of massive stars. Among them, the electron antineutrinos are potentially detectable by terrestrial neutrino experiments such as KamLAND and Super-Kamiokande via inverse beta decay interactions. Once these pre-supernova neutrinos are observed, an early warning of the upcoming core-collapse supernova can be provided. In light of this, KamLAND and Super-Kamiokande, both located in the Kamioka mine in Japan, have been monitoring pre-supernova neutrinos since 2015 and 2021, respectively. Recently, we performed a joint study between KamLAND and Super-Kamiokande on pre-supernova neutrino detection. A pre-supernova alert system combining the KamLAND detector and the Super-Kamiokande detector was developed and put into operation, which can provide a supernova alert to the astrophysics community. Fully leveraging the complementary properties of these two detectors, the combined alert is expected to resolve a pre-supernova neutrino signal from a 15 M$_{\odot}$ star within 510 pc of the Earth, at a significance level corresponding to a false alarm rate of no more than 1 per century. Therefore, design's methodological practices, encompassing various research and experiential facets, play a pivotal role in enhancing the usability and accessibility of digital resources within the social sphere. This study aims to expand the discourse on the characteristics and potential of the interplay between inclusive design and digital humanities practices, with a specific focus on the development of bilingual digital narratives (utilizing Brazilian Sign Language and Portuguese). The research adopts a collaborative, qualitative approach, encompassing processes of evaluation, validation, and enhancement. Digital visual narratives are presented as a facilitating tool for integrating LIBRAS and Portuguese, thereby aiding in language acquisition for deaf children. The article contributes to the discussion of the humanistic approach to design, emphasizing the values of empathy, ethics, and social responsibility in the creation of inclusive and accessible projects.

10. Gadolinium concentration measurement with an atomic absorption spectrophotometer

Abstract: Because gadolinium (Gd) has the highest thermal neutron capture cross section, resulting in an 8 MeV gamma cascade upon capture, it has been proposed for dissolution in water Cherenkov detectors to achieve efficient neutron tagging capabilities. While metallic Gd is insoluble in water, several compounds are very easy to dissolve. Gadolinium sulfate, Gd$_2$(SO$_4$)$_3$, has been thoroughly tested and proposed as the best candidate. Accurate measurement of its concentration, free of doubt from impurities in water, is crucial. An atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS) is a device that suits this purpose and is widely used to measure the concentration of many elements. In this study, we describe three different approaches to measure Gd sulfate concentrations in water using an AAS: doping samples with potassium and lanthanum, and employing tantalum and tungsten platforms.

21. Treat-to-Target in Inflammatory Bowel Disease: An Updated Survey of Treatment Strategies among Portuguese Gastroenterologists

Abstract: Background: In 2018, the authors surveyed the clinical practices among Portuguese gastroenterologists (PGEs) regarding treatment targets in Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). Since then, new evidence has emerged supporting additional targets, such as transmural remission and histological remission. This study provides an updated assessment of treatment practices among PGE with special emphasis on these new targets. Methods: Using the Portuguese Inflammatory bowel disease Study Group (GEDII) physician database, we invited PGE to participate in an anonymous online survey. Results: Fifty-six physicians agreed to participate in the study. Deep remission, steroid-free clinical remission, endoscopic remission, and biomarker remission were ranked among the most important treatment targets in CD (89%, 80%, 89%, and 84%, respectively) and UC (82%, 84%, 79%, and 84%, respectively). In CD, transmural remission was considered a target by 70% of participants, with 48% agreeing to intensify treatment to achieve it. In UC, histological remission was aimed by only 45% of PGE with most (88%) being unwilling to intensify treatment to achieve this goal. Physicians were more likely to seek endoscopic remission in CD and UC in younger and healthier patients, compared to older patients with comorbidities. Conclusion: PGEs are increasingly pursuing tougher treatment targets such as transmural remission in CD and, to a lesser extent, histological remission in UC. Physicians are more willing to escalate treatment to achieve endoscopic remission in younger patients.

Abstract: Abstract Systemic inflammation significantly increases the risk of short- and long-term mortality in geriatric hospitalized patients. To predict mortality in older patients with various age-related diseases and infections, including COVID-19, inflammatory biomarkers such as the C-reactive protein (CRP) to albumin ratio (CAR), and related scores and indexes, i.e. Glasgow Prognostic Score (GPS), modified GPS (mGPS), and high sensitivity (hs)-mGPS, have been increasingly utilized. Despite their easy affordability and widespread availability, these biomarkers are predominantly assessed for clinical purposes rather than predictive applications, leading to their underutilization in hospitalized older patients. In this study, we investigated the association of CAR, GPS, mGPS, and hs-mGPS with short-term mortality in 3,206 geriatric hospitalized patients admitted for acute conditions, irrespective of admission diagnosis. We observed that unit increases of CAR, and the highest classes of GPS, mGPS, and hs-mGPS were significantly associated with a two- to threefold increased risk of death, even adjusting the risk for different confounding variables. Interestingly, a hs-mGPS of 2 showed the highest effect size. Furthermore, gender analysis indicated a stronger association between all CRP-albumin based parameters and mortality in men, underscoring the gender-specific relevance of inflammation-based circulating parameters in mortality prediction. In conclusion, scores based on serum CRP and albumin levels offer additional guidance for the stratification of in-hospital mortality risk in older patients by providing additional information on the degree of systemic inflammation.

Abstract: Mitoribosome biogenesis is a complex process involving RNA elements encoded in the mitochondrial genome and mitoribosomal proteins typically encoded in the nuclear genome. This process is orchestrated by extra‐ribosomal proteins, nucleus‐encoded assembly factors, which play roles across all assembly stages to coordinate ribosomal RNA processing and maturation with the sequential association of ribosomal proteins. Both biochemical studies and recent cryo‐EM structures of mammalian mitoribosomes have provided insights into their assembly process. In this article, we will briefly outline the current understanding of mammalian mitoribosome biogenesis pathways and the factors involved. Special attention is devoted to the recent identification of iron–sulfur clusters as structural components of the mitoribosome and a small subunit assembly factor, the existence of redox‐sensitive cysteines in mitoribosome proteins and assembly factors, and the role they may play as redox sensor units to regulate mitochondrial translation under stress.

Abstract: We report an updated measurement of the $\nu_{\mu}$-induced, and the first measurement of the $\bar{\nu}_{\mu}$-induced coherent charged pion production cross section on $^{12}C$ nuclei in the T2K experiment. This is measured in a restricted region of the final-state phase space for which $p_{\mu,\pi} > 0.2$ GeV, $\cos(\theta_{\mu}) > 0.8$ and $\cos(\theta_{\pi}) > 0.6$, and at a mean (anti)neutrino energy of 0.85 GeV using the T2K near detector. The measured $\nu_{\mu}$ CC coherent pion production flux-averaged cross section on $^{12}C$ is $(2.98 \pm 0.37 (stat.) \pm 0.31 (syst.) \substack{ +0.49 \\ -0.00 } \mathrm{ (Q^2\,model)}) \times 10^{-40}~\mathrm{cm}^{2}$. The new measurement of the $\bar{\nu}_{\mu}$-induced cross section on $^{12}{C}$ is $(3.05 \pm 0.71 (stat.) \pm 0.39 (syst.) \substack{ +0.74 \\ -0.00 } \mathrm{(Q^2\,model)}) \times 10^{-40}~\mathrm{cm}^{2}$. The results are compatible with both the NEUT 5.4.0 Berger-Sehgal (2009) and GENIE 2.8.0 Rein-Sehgal (2007) model predictions.

Abstract: Along with the nearing completion of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), comes an increasing demand for accurate and reliable automated solutions to extract valuable information from the vast amount of data it will allow acquiring. Automated source finding is a particularly important task in this context, as it enables the detection and classification of astronomical objects. Deep-learning-based object detection and semantic segmentation models have proven to be suitable for this purpose. However, training such deep networks requires a high volume of labeled data, which is not trivial to obtain in the context of radio astronomy. Since data needs to be manually labeled by experts, this process is not scalable to large dataset sizes, limiting the possibilities of leveraging deep networks to address several tasks. In this work, we propose RADiff, a generative approach based on conditional diffusion models trained over an annotated radio dataset to generate synthetic images, containing radio sources of different morphologies, to augment existing datasets and reduce the problems caused by class imbalances. We also show that it is possible to generate fully-synthetic image-annotation pairs to automatically augment any annotated dataset. We evaluate the effectiveness of this approach by training a semantic segmentation model on a real dataset augmented in two ways: 1) using synthetic images obtained from real masks, and 2) generating images from synthetic semantic masks. We show an improvement in performance when applying augmentation, gaining up to 18% in performance when using real masks and 4% when augmenting with synthetic masks. Finally, we employ this model to generate large-scale radio maps with the objective of simulating Data Challenges.

27. Mapping the pathways to health sciences librarianship: reflections and future implications from an immersion session.

Abstract: OBJECTIVE: Many health sciences librarians enter the profession without specific health sciences training. Some LIS programs have health sciences courses or tracks, but health sciences training within an LIS program is only one path to entering health sciences librarianship. To develop a map of pathways into health sciences librarianship, an immersion session at the Medical Library Association conference in 2022 asked health sciences librarians to share how they entered the profession. METHODS: The immersion session was structured in three parts: facilitator introductions, small group discussions, and a whole group summary discussion. Guided by questions from the facilitators, small groups discussed what pathways currently exist, how to promote existing pathways, what new pathways should be created, and how to develop and promote pathways that make the profession more equitable, diverse, and inclusive. RESULTS: Through in-the-moment thematic analysis of the small group discussions, the following emerged as key pathways: library school education; internships and practica; the Library and Information Science (LIS) pipeline; on-thejob training; mentoring; self-teaching/hands-on learning; and continuing education. Themes of equity, diversity, and inclusion arose throughout the session, especially in the concluding whole group discussion. CONCLUSION: Small group discussions in a conference immersion session showed the value of community building in a profession that has multiple pathways for entrance, highlighting the importance of unearthing hidden knowledge about avenues for exploring and enhancing career pathways. The article seeks to address barriers to entry into the profession and adds to the literature on strengthening the field of health sciences librarianship.

Abstract: We detail the the REACH radiometric system designed to enable measurements of the 21-cm neutral hydrogen line. Included is the radiometer architecture and end-to-end system simulations as well as a discussion of the challenges intrinsic to highly-calibratable system development. Following this, we share laboratory results based on the calculation of noise wave parameters utilising an over-constrained least squares approach demonstrating a calibration RMSE of 80 mK for five hours of integration on a custom-made source with comparable impedance to that of the antenna used in the field. Abstract: Muon neutrino and antineutrino disappearance probabilities are identical in the standard three-flavor neutrino oscillation framework, but CPT violation and non-standard interactions can violate this symmetry. In this work we report the measurements of $\sin^{2} \theta_{23}$ and $\Delta m_{32}^2$ independently for neutrinos and antineutrinos. The aforementioned symmetry violation would manifest as an inconsistency in the neutrino and antineutrino oscillation parameters. The analysis discussed here uses a total of 1.97$\times$10$^{21}$ and 1.63$\times$10$^{21}$ protons on target taken with a neutrino and antineutrino beam respectively, and benefits from improved flux and cross-section models, new near detector samples and more than double the data reducing the overall uncertainty of the result. No significant deviation is observed, consistent with the standard neutrino oscillation picture.

Abstract: Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are millisecond radio transients observed at cosmological distances. The nature of their progenitors is still a matter of debate, although magnetars are invoked by most models. The proposed FRB-magnetar connection was strengthened by the discovery of an FRB-like event from the Galactic magnetar SGR J1935+2154. In this work, we aim to investigate how prevalent magnetars such as SGR J1935+2154 are within FRB progenitors. We carried out an FRB search in a sample of seven nearby (< 12 Mpc) galaxies with the Northern Cross radio telescope for a total of 692 h. We detected one 1.8 ms burst in the direction of M101 with a fluence of $58 \pm 5$ Jy ms. Its dispersion measure of 303 pc cm$^{-3}$ places it most-likely beyond M101. Considering that no significant detection comes indisputably from the selected galaxies, we place a 38 yr$^{-1}$ upper limit on the total burst rate (i.e. including the whole sample) at the 95\% confidence level. This upper limit constrains the event rate per magnetar $\lambda_{\rm mag} < 0.42$ magnetar$^{-1}$ yr$^{-1}$ or, if combined with literature observations of a similar sample of nearby galaxies, it yields a joint constraint of $\lambda_{\rm mag} < 0.25$ magnetar$^{-1}$ yr$^{-1}$. We also provide the first constraints on the expected rate of FRBs hypothetically originating from ultraluminous X-ray (ULX) sources, since some of the galaxies observed during our observational campaign host confirmed ULXs. We obtain $< 13$ yr$^{-1}$ per ULX for the total sample of galaxies observed. Our results indicate that bursts with energies $E>10^{34}$ erg from magnetars like SGR J1935+2154 appear more rarely compared to previous observations and further disfavour them as unique progenitors for the cosmological FRB population, leaving more space open to the contribution from a population of more exotic magnetars, not born via core-collapsed supernovae., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, published in A&A

Abstract: Abstract Glioblastoma (GBM) represents an aggressive brain tumor, characterized by intra- and inter-tumoral heterogeneity and therapy resistance, leading to unfavourable prognosis. An increasing number of studies pays attention on the regulation of ferroptosis, an iron-dependent cell death, as a strategy to reverse drug resistance in cancer. However, the debate on whether this strategy may have important implications for the treatment of GBM is still ongoing. In the present study, we used ferric ammonium citrate and erastin to evaluate ferroptosis induction effects on two human GBM cell lines, U-251 MG, with proneural characteristics, and T98-G, with a mesenchymal profile. The response to ferroptosis induction was markedly different between cell lines, indeed T98-G cells showed an enhanced antioxidant defence, with increased glutathione levels, as compared to U-251 MG cells. Moreover, using bioinformatic approaches and analysing publicly available datasets from patients’ biopsies, we found that GBM with a mesenchymal phenotype showed an up-regulation of several genes involved in antioxidant mechanisms as compared to proneural subtype. Thus, our results suggest that GBM subtypes differently respond to ferroptosis induction, emphasizing the significance of further molecular studies on GBM to better discriminate between various tumor subtypes and progressively move towards personalized therapy.

Este artigo tem como objetivo apresentar a ferramenta digital Sinalizando Química – SinQui, destacar suas potencialidades e como ela é utilizada pela equipe de professores de Química do Instituto Nacional de Educação de Surdos – INES. Essa ferramenta foi pensada e desenvolvida no Instituto por professores ouvintes e surdos. Abstract: Abstract To evaluate the safety and the potential antiviral treatment of inhaled enriched heparin in patients with COVID-19. The specific objectives were to investigate the anticoagulation profile, antiviral and anti-inflammatory effects, and respiratory evolution of inhaled enriched heparin. We conducted a randomized, triple-blind, placebo-controlled Phase I/II clinical trial in hospitalized adults with COVID-19 receiving inhalation of enriched heparin or saline (placebo) every 4 h for 7 days. Among the 27 patients who completed the study, no changes in blood coagulation parameters were observed, indicating the safety of inhaled enriched heparin. The group receiving enriched heparin showed a significant reduction in the need for supplemental oxygen and improvement in respiratory parameters, such as the PaO2/FiO2 ratio. Inhalation of enriched heparin is shown to be safe and has also demonstrated potential therapeutic benefits for patients with COVID-19. These promising results justify the continuation of the study to the next phase, Phase II/III, to further evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of inhaled enriched heparin in the treatment of COVID-19-associated viral pneumonia. 34. Immunotherapy-Based Combinations in First-Line Urothelial Cancer: A Systematic Review and Individual Patient Data (IPD) Meta-Analysis

Abstract: Introduction. Platinum-based chemotherapy represents the standard of care (SoC) for the first-line treatment of advanced urothelial carcinoma (mUC). The benefit of adding immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) to platinum-based chemotherapy was recently investigated. We performed an individual patient data (IPD) meta-analysis of phase 3 clinical trials comparing ICI-based treatments. Methods. A systematic literature search was conducted on the MEDLINE and CENTRAL databases. The results were filtered by including only reports on clinical trials or randomized clinical trials from 2018 to 2023, including 3047 patients from four clinical trials (EV302, CHECKMATE-901, IMVIGOR130, KEYNOTE-361). An IPD meta-analysis was performed by reconstructing IPD from Kaplan–Meier curves. The primary endpoints were overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) of Pembrolizumab + EV compared to experimental arms of the other trials of immunotherapy + chemotherapy. Results. The OS analysis showed an advantage of IPD from EV302 vs. all the other trials. For EV302 vs. KEYNOTE-361, the HR was 0.51; for EV302 vs. IMVIGOR130, the HR was 0.47; and for EV302 vs. CHECKMATE-901, the HR was 0.66 (CI 95% 0.51–0.85). In the PFS analysis, the EV302 arm showed a statistically significant advantage compared to CHECKMATE-901 (HR 0.66) and versus IMVIGOR130 (HR 0.51). Limitations: By using reconstructed IPD curves, it was not possible to adjust patient-level covariates, and the heterogeneity of the included population may have affected the pooled results. Conclusions: The EV302 experimental arm showed better OS and PFS when compared to the other immunochemotherapy combinations. An immunochemotherapy combination strategy at the beginning of treatment in mUC seems to be superior in terms of OS and PFS compared to platinum-based chemotherapy alone. EV–Pembrolizumab resulted to have better outcomes compared to avelumab, rather than other immunochemotherapy combinations. However, given the heterogeneity of these studies, a longer follow up and prospective trials are needed to confirm these data.

35. Material needs security and cardiovascular risk factors in rural South Africa

Abstract: Abstract Background The prevalence of cardiovascular disease is burgeoning in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). In sub-Saharan Africa, the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors is increasing, though rates of CVD diagnosis and management remain low. Awareness of the influence of social determinants of health (SDOH) on cardiovascular outcomes is growing, however, most work focuses on high-income countries. Material needs security is a measure of SDOH that may be particularly relevant for LMICs. This study investigated the relationship between material needs security and cardiovascular risk in older adults living in South Africa. Methods The analysis included 5059 respondents age ≥ 40 in the Health and Aging in Africa survey, an observational cohort study administered in 2014 in Mpumalanga Province, South Africa. Linear regression models tested the association between material needs and eight cardiovascular risk factors (waist-to-hip ratio, body mass index, blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol, LDL, and triglycerides). Adjusted linear regression models controlled for sociodemographic confounders. Results There were significant adjusted associations found between increased material needs security and four cardiovascular risk factors, including waist-to-hip ratio (β = 0.001; 95% CI [0.00002,0.002]), BMI (β = 0.19; 95%CI=[0.14,0.24]), glucose (β = 0.46; 95%CI=[0.02,0.90]), and triglycerides (β = 0.26; 95%CI=[0.02,0.49]). Conclusion Increased material needs security was associated with significantly increased cardiovascular risk in older adults in rural South Africa. These findings can inform the approach to treatment and management of cardiovascular disease in South Africa and similar LMICs. Future investigations should evaluate the implementation and efficacy of interventions that recognize the role of material needs security in cardiovascular risk.

Abstract: Antimicrobial resistance presents a substantial threat to global public health, demanding urgent attention and action. This study focuses on lanthipeptides, ribosomally encoded peptides that display significant structural diversity and hold promising potential as antibiotics. Genome mining was employed to locate biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) containing class II lanthipeptide synthetases encoded by lanM genes. A phylogenetic study analyzing homologous sequences of functional LanM sequences revealed a unique evolutionary clade of 17 LanM proteins associated with 12 Clostridium bacterial genomes. In silico exploration identified nine complete BGCs, including one super-cluster containing two co-localized operons from Clostridium cellulovorans 743B, that encode for two new peptides named clostrisin and cellulosin. Each operon was heterologously expressed in Escherichia coli. Molecular weights associated with the expected post-translational modifications of the purified lanthipeptide were confirmed by MS–MS/MS analysis for cellulosin, while clostrisin was not post-translationally modified. Both peptides demonstrated antimicrobial activity against multidrug-resistant bacteria, such as a clinical strain of Staphylococcus epidermidis MIQ43 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa PA14. This is the first report of lanthipeptides from the Clostridium genus produced with its native biosynthetic machinery, as well as chemically and biologically characterized. This study showcases the immense potential of genome mining in identifying new RiPP synthetases and associated bioactive peptides.

Abstract: This paper reports the first measurement of muon neutrino charged-current interactions without pions in the final state using multiple detectors with correlated energy spectra at T2K. The data was collected on hydrocarbon targets using the off-axis T2K near detector (ND280) and the on-axis T2K near detector (INGRID) with neutrino energy spectra peaked at 0.6 GeV and 1.1 GeV respectively. The correlated neutrino flux presents an opportunity to reduce the impact of the flux uncertainty and to study the energy dependence of neutrino interactions. The extracted double-differential cross sections are compared to several Monte Carlo neutrino-nucleus interaction event generators showing the agreement between both detectors individually and with the correlated result., Comment: Updated discussion in Sec. Abstract: In recent years, deep learning has been successfully applied in various scientific domains. Following these promising results and performances, it has recently also started being evaluated in the domain of radio astronomy. In particular, since radio astronomy is entering the Big Data era, with the advent of the largest telescope in the world - the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), the task of automatic object detection and instance segmentation is crucial for source finding and analysis. In this work, we explore the performance of the most affirmed deep learning approaches, applied to astronomical images obtained by radio interferometric instrumentation, to solve the task of automatic source detection. This is carried out by applying models designed to accomplish two different kinds of tasks: object detection and semantic segmentation. The goal is to provide an overview of existing techniques, in terms of prediction performance and computational efficiency, to scientists in the astrophysics community who would like to employ machine learning in their research.

Abstract: The T2K experiment presents new measurements of neutrino oscillation parameters using $19.7(16.3)\times10^{20}$ protons on target (POT) in (anti-)neutrino mode at the far detector (FD). Compared to the previous analysis, an additional $4.7\times10^{20}$ POT neutrino data was collected at the FD. Significant improvements were made to the analysis methodology, with the near-detector analysis introducing new selections and using more than double the data. Additionally, this is the first T2K oscillation analysis to use NA61/SHINE data on a replica of the T2K target to tune the neutrino flux model, and the neutrino interaction model was improved to include new nuclear effects and calculations. Frequentist and Bayesian analyses are presented, including results on $\sin^2\theta_{13}$ and the impact of priors on the $\delta_\mathrm{CP}$ measurement. Both analyses prefer the normal mass ordering and upper octant of $\sin^2\theta_{23}$ with a nearly maximally CP-violating phase. Assuming the normal ordering and using the constraint on $\sin^2\theta_{13}$ from reactors, $\sin^2\theta_{23}=0.561^{+0.021}_{-0.032}$ using Feldman--Cousins corrected intervals, and $\Delta{}m^2_{32}=2.494_{-0.058}^{+0.041}\times10^{-3}~\mathrm{eV^2}$ using constant $\Delta\chi^{2}$ intervals. The CP-violating phase is constrained to $\delta_\mathrm{CP}=-1.97_{-0.70}^{+0.97}$ using Feldman--Cousins corrected intervals, and $\delta_\mathrm{CP}=0,\pi$ is excluded at more than 90% confidence level. A Jarlskog invariant of zero is excluded at more than $2\sigma$ credible level using a flat prior in $\delta_\mathrm{CP}$, and just below $2\sigma$ using a flat prior in $\sin\delta_\mathrm{CP}$. When the external constraint on $\sin^2\theta_{13}$ is removed, $\sin^2\theta_{13}=28.0^{+2.8}_{-6.5}\times10^{-3}$, in agreement with measurements from reactor experiments. These results are consistent with previous T2K analyses.

Abstract: New developments in data processing and visualization are being made in preparation for upcoming radioastronomical surveys planned with the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) and its precursors. A major goal is enabling extraction of science information from the data in a mostly automated way, possibly exploiting the capabilities offered by modern computing infrastructures and technologies. In this context, the integration of source analysis algorithms into data visualization tools is expected to significantly improve and speed up the cataloguing process of large area surveys. To this aim, the CIRASA (Collaborative and Integrated platform for Radio Astronomical Source Analysis) project was recently started to develop and integrate a set of services for source extraction, classification and analysis into the ViaLactea visual analytic platform and knowledge base archive. 44. Fidelidade do manequim: efeito na satisfação e autoconfiança de estudantes de enfermagem

Abstract: Resumo Objetivo Comparar o efeito da fidelidade do manequim na simulação sobre os níveis de satisfação e autoconfiança com a aprendizagem de estudantes de graduação em enfermagem em relação a administração de medicamento intravenoso ao paciente crítico. Métodos Ensaio clínico randomizado, paralelo, duplo cego. Os participantes do estudo foram alocados em Grupo Experimental (manequim de alta fidelidade) e Grupo Controle (manequim de baixa fidelidade) e expostos a sessão de simulação. Nos momentos pré, imediatamente após e 30 dias após a simulação os estudantes preencheram a Escala de Satisfação do Estudante e Autoconfiança na Aprendizagem. Foram utilizados os testes estatísticos Mann Whitney, Qui-quadrado, teste de Wilcoxon e Exato de Fisher. Adotou-se nível de significância de 5%, considerados significativos resultados com valor p ≤ 0,05. Resultados Foram avaliados 60 estudantes (31 no Grupo Experimental e 29 no Grupo Controle). Foi significante a redução da satisfação (p = 0,02) e da autoconfiança (p < 0,001) ao longo do período de 30 dias no grupo controle. No grupo experimental verificou-se sustentação dos níveis de satisfação e autoconfiança nas diferentes etapas do estudo. Conclusão A alta fidelidade do manequim não se mostrou efetiva para o desenvolvimento de habilidades não técnicas como a satisfação e a autoconfiança quando comparado a baixa fidelidade na administração de medicamentos intravenosos no paciente crítico por estudantes de enfermagem.

Abstract: IntroductionThe incidence of metabolic diseases tends to be highest during the transition period (±3 weeks around parturition) in dairy cows due to physiological changes and the onset of lactation. Although blood profile testing allows for the monitoring of nutritional and metabolic status, conducting extensive analyses in the herd is costly and stressful for cows due to invasive procedures. Therefore, mid-infrared spectroscopy (MIR) could be seen as a valid alternative.MethodsIn the present study, we used laboratory-determined reference blood data and milk spectra of 349 Holstein cows to (i) identify the non-genetic factors affecting the variability of major blood traits in healthy cows and, subsequently, (ii) test the predictive ability of milk MIR. Cows belonged to 14 Italian commercial farms and were sampled once between 5 and 38 days in milk. For β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), cholesterol, glucose, urea, total protein, albumin, globulin, minerals, aspartate aminotransferase, gamma-glutamyl transferase, creatine kinase, total bilirubin, and cortisol, the effects of parity, days in milk, and season were investigated using a linear model.Results and discussionThe results indicate that all fixed effects significantly affected the hematic concentration of most of the traits. Regarding MIR, the most predictable traits were BHB, NEFA, and urea, with coefficients of determination equal to 0.57, 0.62, and 0.89, respectively. These values suggest that MIR predictions of BHB and NEFA are not sufficiently accurate for precise and punctual determination of the hematic concentration, however, still the spectrum of the milk can be exploited to identify cows at risk of negative energy balance and subclinical ketosis. Finally, the predictions can be useful for herd screening, decision-making, and genetic evaluation.

47. Kidney transplantation and perioperative complications: a prospective cohort study

Abstract: Background: Kidney transplant recipients face complex perioperative challenges due to comorbidities from chronic kidney disease. This study aimed to assess perioperative complications in kidney transplant recipients and evaluate the association between the Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) and complication severity using the Clavien-Dindo (CD) classification. Methods: A prospective cohort study conducted at a tertiary hospital in South Brazil from September 2020 to March 2022, including 230 adult kidney transplant recipients. Data on demographics, comorbidities, and complications were collected. Complications were categorized using the CD scale, and their relationship with CCI was analyzed using univariate and multivariate Cox regression. Results: Mean age was 49.2 ± 12.7 years, with 58.7% male recipients. The mean CCI score was 3.65 ± 1.5 points. Intraoperative complications occurred in 10.9% of patients, with notable issues including bleeding and airway difficulties. In the immediate postoperative period, 9.1% required urgent dialysis. In the 30-day follow-up, 57.8% had delayed graft function, 21.7% infections, 11.3% had vascular complications, and the mortality was 1.7%. CCI was not a significant predictor of severe complications; however, congestive heart failure was strongly associated with severe complications (HR = 6.6 95% CI 2.6–6.7, p < 0.001). Conclusions: Despite a low overall comorbidity profile, kidney transplant recipients faced significant perioperative challenges. The lack of a significant association between the CCI score and severe complications suggests that traditional risk assessment tools may not fully capture the risks specific to the early postoperative period in kidney transplantation, and future research should focus on developing more refined risk assessment models for chronic kidney disease patients.

Abstract: Background and purpose: In carbon ion radiotherapy (CIRT), different relative biological effectiveness (RBE) models have been used for calculating RBE-weighted dose (DRBE). Conversion between current RBE predictions and introduction of novel approaches remains a challenging task. Our aim is to introduce a framework considering multiple RBE models simultaneously during CIRT plan optimization, easing the translation between DRBE prescriptions. Materials and methods: An in-house developed Monte Carlo treatment planning system was extended to incorporate the local effect model version I (LEM-I), the modified microdosimetric kinetic model (mMKM) and the MKM-derived Japanese biological model (NIRS-MKM). Four clinical cases (two head-and-neck and two prostate patients), initially optimized with LEM-I for both targets and organs at risk (OARs), underwent two further optimizations: to fulfill mMKM/NIRS-MKM-based target prescriptions (mixed-RBE approach) or to simultaneously consider two biological models within the target regions (multi-RBE approach). Both approaches retained LEM-I-derived dose constraints for OARs. Results: The developed optimization strategies have been successfully applied, fulfilling all the clinical criteria for the applied RBE models. One of the RBE models showed unfavorable dose distribution when not explicitly considered in the optimization, while multi-RBE model optimization allowed meeting dose objectives for the selected OARs for both models simultaneously. Conclusions: The introduced optimization approaches allow for mixed- or multi-RBE optimization in CIRT through the selection of RBE models independently for each region of interest. This capability addresses challenges of adhering to multiple RBE frameworks and proposes an advanced solution for tailored patient treatment plans.

Abstract: Source finding is one of the most challenging tasks in upcoming radio continuum surveys with SKA precursors, such as the Evolutionary Map of the Universe (EMU) survey of the Australian SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP) telescope. The resolution, sensitivity, and sky coverage of such surveys is unprecedented, requiring new features and improvements to be made in existing source finders. Among them, reducing the false detection rate, particularly in the Galactic plane, and the ability to associate multiple disjoint islands into physical objects. To bridge this gap, we developed a new source finder, based on the Mask R-CNN object detection framework, capable of both detecting and classifying compact, extended, spurious, and poorly imaged sources in radio continuum images. The model was trained using ASKAP EMU data, observed during the Early Science and pilot survey phase, and previous radio survey data, taken with the VLA and ATCA telescopes. On the test sample, the final model achieves an overall detection completeness above 85\%, a reliability of $\sim$65\%, and a classification precision/recall above 90\%. Abstract: Observations of the 21-cm line from primordial hydrogen promise to be one of the best tools to study the early epochs of the Universe: the Dark Ages, the Cosmic Dawn, and the subsequent Epoch of Reionization. In 2018, the EDGES experiment caught the attention of the cosmology community with a potential detection of an absorption feature in the sky-averaged radio spectrum centred at 78 MHz. The feature is deeper than expected, and, if confirmed, would call for new physics. However, different groups have re-analyzed the EDGES data and questioned the reliability of the signal. The Radio Experiment for the Analysis of Cosmic Hydrogen (REACH) is a sky-averaged 21-cm experiment aiming at improving the current observations by tackling the issues faced by current instruments related to residual systematic signals in the data. The novel experimental approach focuses on detecting and jointly explaining these systematics together with the foregrounds and the cosmological signal using Bayesian statistics. To achieve this, REACH features simultaneous observations with two different antennas, an ultra wideband system (redshift range 7.5 to 28), and a receiver calibrator based on in-field measurements.
