Background: Chemosensory proteins are a family of insect-specific chemical sensors that sense specific chemical cues and regulate insect behavior. Chemosensory proteins have been identified and analyzed in many insect species, such as Drosophila melanogaster, Bactrocera dorsalis and Calliphora stygia. This research has revealed that these proteins play a crucial role in insect orientation, predation and oviposition. However, little is known about the chemosensory proteins of Chlorops oryzae, a major pest of rice crops throughout Asia. Results: Comparative transcription analysis of the genes of Chlorops oryzae larvae, pupae and adults identified a total of 104 chemosensory genes, including 25 odorant receptors (ORs), 26 odorant-binding proteins (OBPs), 19 ionotropic receptors (IRs), 23 gustatory receptors (GRs) and 11 sensory neuron membrane proteins (SNMPs). The sequences of these candidate chemosensory genes were confirmed and used to construct phylogenetic trees. Quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) confirmed that the expression of candidate OR genes in different developmental stages was consistent with the fragments per kilobase per million fragments (FPKM) values of differentially expressed genes (DEGs). Conclusions: The identification of chemosensory genes in C. oryzae provides a foundation for the investigation of the function of chemosensory proteins in this species, which, in turn, could allow the development of new, improved methods of controlling this pest. Superelastic shape memory alloys (SMAs) are smart materials that can recover 6–8% elastic strains due to their phase transformation. SMAs also possess unique characteristics such as good energy dissipation, excellent re-centering capabilities and corrosion resistance. Recent studies have incorporated the use of superelastic SMA fibers in cementitious composites to achieve re-centering and crack-closing capabilities. Consequently, it is important to investigate the performance of fiber reinforced concrete (FRC) members under cyclic loading. This study investigates the use of hybrid steel/SMA fibers as reinforcement in concrete members subjected to cyclic flexural loading. Digital image correlation (DIC) was used to monitor the full field displacements and strains of the concrete beam specimens. Fiber density and statistical spatial point pattern functions were used to assess the fiber distribution. Two acoustic emission sensors were attached to each side of the concrete specimens to characterize crack development. A correlation between the crack width propagation and cumulative energy captured by the acoustic emission sensors was established. Results showed that the hybrid specimen with equal fiber volume ratios for steel and SMA fibers exhibit a lower mid-span deflection and smaller crack width. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rose rosette emaravirus (RRV, genus Emaravirus), the causal agent of rose rosette disease, is the topmost pathogen of concern for the rose industry in the United States. The only strategy available for disease management is early identification and eradication of the infected plants. Highly reliable, specific, and sensitive detection assays are thus required to test and confirm the presence of RRV in suspected plant samples. RRV is only a recently characterized virus and hence limits the diagnostic tools available for its early detection. With a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Specialty Crop Research Initiative (SCRI) project sponsorship, several diagnostic tools including end-point reverse transcriptionpolymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and RT-qPCR assays targeting single and multiple genes targets were developed for routine diagnostics. This review introduces an overall view of the different diagnostic tools developed, which are reliable, highly sensitive, and can be easily implemented for detection and identification in laboratories providing diagnostic services and confirmation of RRV-infected samples. Quantum two-level systems interacting with the surroundings are ubiquitous in nature. The interaction suppresses quantum coherence and forces the system towards a steady state. Such dissipative processes are captured by the paradigmatic spin-boson model, describing a two-state particle, the “spin”, interacting with an environment formed by harmonic oscillators. A fundamental question to date is to what extent intense coherent driving impacts a strongly dissipative system. Here we investigate experimentally and theoretically a superconducting qubit strongly coupled to an electromagnetic environment and subjected to a coherent drive. This setup realizes the driven Ohmic spin-boson model. We show that the drive reinforces environmental suppression of quantum coherence, and that a coherent-toincoherent transition can be achieved by tuning the drive amplitude. An out-of-equilibrium detailed balance relation is demonstrated. Topics discussed include social interaction has a direct impact not only on the maturation of the vocal behavior but also on acoustic call structures during vocal development, systematic differences in call entropy and social interaction in proper primate vocal development.

Summary NanoShaper is a program specifically aiming the construction and analysis of the molecular surface of nanoscopic systems. It uses ray-casting for parallelism and it performs analytical computations whenever possible to maximize robustness and accuracy of the approach. Among the other features, NanoShaper provides volume, surface area, including that of internal cavities, for any considered molecular system. It identifies pockets via a very intuitive definition based on the concept of probe radius, intrinsic to the definition of the solvent excluded surface. We show here that, with a suitable choice of the parameters, the same approach can also permit the visualisation of molecular channels. NanoShaper has now been interfaced with the widely used molecular visualization software VMD, further enriching its already well furnished toolset. Flow phantoms are widely used in studies associated with Doppler ultrasound measurements, acting as an effective experimental validation system in cardiovascular-related research and in new algorithm/instrumentation development. The development of materials that match the acoustic and mechanical properties of the vascular system is of great interest while designing flow phantoms. Although recipes that meet the flow phantom standard defined by the International Electrotechnical Commission 61685 are already available in the literature, the standard procedure for material preparations and phantom fabrications has not been well established. In this paper, two types of flow phantoms, with and without blood vessel mimic, are described in detail in terms of the material preparation and phantom fabrication. The phantom materials chosen for the two phantoms are from published phantom studies, and their physical properties have been investigated previously. Both the flow phantoms have been scanned by ultrasound scanners and images from different modes are presented. These phantoms may be used in the validation and characterization of Doppler ultrasound measurements in blood vessels with a diameter above 1 mm. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

It is of great significance to provide theoretical guidance to the application of carbon nanotubes as adhesive materials via the investigation on their adhesion force. In this paper, molecular dynamics was adopted to investigate the adhesion force between the graphene substrate and the carbon nanotubes with varying deformation degrees and diverse types of irradiation induced defects at different temperatures. No obvious adhesion force was found between the carbon nanotube and graphene until the deformation degree of the former reached > 70%. The adhesion force would be maintained at a high level when the temperature was in the range of 280–320 K, which limited its application. Moreover, the adhesion force between carbon nanotube with vacancies and graphene substrate would decrease with increasing size of vacancies. Finally, compared with monovacancies and divacancies, Stone-Wales defects most remarkably reduced the adhesion force of carbon nanotubes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present paper reports a complete mass spectrometric characterization of both the phenolic and volatile fractions of a dried spearmint extract. Phenolic compounds were analysed by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (UHPLC-ESI-MSn) and a total of 66 compounds were tentatively identified, being the widest phenolic characterisation of spearmint to date. The analysis suggests that the extract is composed of rosmarinic acid and its derivatives (230.5 ± 13.5 mg/g) with smaller amounts of salvianolic acids, caffeoylquinic acids, hydroxybenzoic acids, hydroxycinnamic acids, flavones, and flavanones. Head space solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) technique, that was applied to characterize the volatile fraction of spearmint, identified molecules belonging to different chemical classes, such as p-cymene, isopiperitone, and piperitone, dihydroedulan II, menthone, p-cymen-8-ol, and β-linalool. This comprehensive phytochemical analysis can be useful to test the authenticity of this product rich in rosmarinic acid and other phenolics, and when assessing its biological properties. We acoustically modulated the localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) of metal nanostructures integrated within microfluidic systems. An acoustically driven micromixing device based on bubble microstreaming quickly and homogeneously mixes multiple laminar flows of different refractive indices. The altered refractive index of the mixed fluids enables rapid modulation of the LSPRs of gold nanodisk arrays embedded within the microfluidic channel. The device features fast response for dynamic operation, and the refractive index within the channel is tailorable. With these unique features, our "acousto-plasmofluidic" device can be useful in applications such as optical switches, modulators, filters, biosensors, and lab-on-a-chip systems. Purulent pericarditis is a rare diagnosis with life-threatening implications due to the rapid accumulation of pericardial material, swiftly progressing to tamponade physiology. The nature of its quickly evolving and severe implications demands a low threshold for diagnostic consideration where appropriate. We present an unusual case of purulent pericarditis secondary to Streptococcus intermedius in a previously healthy male adolescent without traditional risk factors, which raises the question of whether emergent S. intermedius species may have acquired novel molecular mechanisms. The breakthrough capacity of optoacoustics for three-dimensional visualization of dynamic events in real time has been recently showcased. Yet, efficient spectral unmixing for functional imaging of entire volumetric regions is significantly challenged by motion artifacts in concurrent acquisitions at multiple wavelengths. Here, we introduce a method for simultaneous acquisition of multispectral volumetric datasets by introducing a microsecond-level delay between excitation laser pulses at different wavelengths. Robust performance is demonstrated by real-time volumetric visualization of functional blood parametrers in human vasculature with a handheld matrix array optoacoustic probe. This approach can avert image artifacts imposed by velocities greater than 2 m/s, thus, does not only facilitate imaging influenced by respiratory, cardiac or other intrinsic fast movements in living tissues, but can achieve artifact-free imaging in the presence of more significant motion, e.g. abrupt displacements during handheld-mode operation in a clinical environment. Reef fish distributions are patchy in time and space with some coral reef habitats supporting higher densities (i.e., aggregations) of fish than others. Identifying and quantifying fish aggregations (particularly during spawning events) are often top priorities for coastal managers. However, the rapid mapping of these aggregations using conventional survey methods (e.g., non-technical SCUBA diving and remotely operated cameras) are limited by depth, visibility and time. Acoustic sensors (i.e., splitbeam and multibeam echosounders) are not constrained by these same limitations, and were used to concurrently map and quantify the location, density and size of reef fish along with seafloor structure in two, separate locations in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Reef fish aggregations were documented along the shelf edge, an ecologically important ecotone in the region. Fish were grouped into three classes according to body size, and relationships with the benthic seascape were modeled in one area using Boosted Regression Trees. These models were validated in a second area to test their predictive performance in locations where fish have not been mapped. Models predicting the density of large fish (≥29 cm) performed well (i.e., AUC = 0.77). Water depth and standard deviation of depth were the most influential predictors at two spatial scales (100 and 300 m). Models of small (≤11 cm) and medium (12–28 cm) fish performed poorly (i.e., AUC = 0.49 to 0.68) due to the high prevalence (45–79%) of smaller fish in both locations, and the unequal prevalence of smaller fish in the training and validation areas. Integrating acoustic sensors with spatial modeling offers a new and reliable approach to rapidly identify fish aggregations and to predict the density large fish in un-surveyed locations. New Caledonia is a Pacific island with a unique biodiversity showing an extreme microendemism. Many species distributions observed on this island are extremely restricted, localized to mountains or rivers making biodiversity evaluation and conservation a difficult task. A rapid biodiversity assessment method based on acoustics was recently proposed. This method could help to document the unique spatial structure observed in New Caledonia. Here, this method was applied in an attempt to reveal differences among three mountain sites (Mandjélia, Koghis and Aoupinié) with similar ecological features and species richness level, but with high beta diversity according to different microendemic assemblages. In each site, several local acoustic communities were sampled with audio recorders. An automatic acoustic sampling was run on these three sites for a period of 82 successive days. Acoustic properties of animal communities were analysed without any species identification. A frequency spectral complexity index (NP) was used as an estimate of the level of acoustic activity and a frequency spectral dissimilarity index (Df) assessed acoustic differences between pairs of recordings. As expected, the index NP did not reveal significant differences in the acoustic activity level between the three sites. However, the acoustic variability estimated by the index Df, could first be explained by changes in the acoustic communities along the 24-hour cycle and second by acoustic dissimilarities between the three sites. The results support the hypothesis that global acoustic analyses can detect acoustic differences between sites with similar species richness and similar ecological context, but with different species assemblages. This study also demonstrates that global acoustic methods applied at broad spatial and temporal scales could help to assess local biodiversity in the challenging context of microendemism. Abstract: This study presents the data elements to develop a new processing route to transform elastomeric waste residue (particulates) into acoustic and thermal insulation materials that can compete with commercial products. The approach is to bind these grain and fibre particulates with a foaming polyurethane or a similar polymer, the chemistry of which can be manipulated to control the structure stiffness and the evolution of the foaming gas into open or closed cells. Here the study uses two examples of such residues, tyre and carpet shreds both composed of fibres trapping grains of either rubber or PVC. Compounds were made from these systems with different PU binders and the structural properties (density, porosity, air flow resistivity, tortuosity and stiffness) and performance properties (sound absorption, sound transmission, impact sound insulation and thermal conductivity) were measured as a function of binder loading and chemistry. The data obtained show clearly that performance can be tailored by tailoring structural properties resulting with materials that match or even outperform commercial products. The data set obtained here can be usefully exploited with available acoustic and thermal insulation materials model to take the approach further and extended to other waste systems. Ultrasonic velocity (U), viscocity (η) and density (ρ) of L - ascorbic acid, dextrose and sucrose in aqueous guanidine hydrochloride (0.3 m) have been measured at 298.15 K. The derived acoustical parameters namely adiabatic compressibility (β), apparent molal compressibility (φK) apparent molal volume (φv) limiting apparent molal compressibility ((φ0K) limiting apparent molal volume (φ0v) and their constants (SK, SV) and viscosity Bcoefficient and hydration number (nH) have been computed from the experimental data. The variation of these parameters with respect to the molality of solutes have been explained on the basis of solute-solvent interaction and structure making tendency of the solutes in solvents. Tracheal sound average power is directly related to the breathing flow rate and recently it has attracted considerable attention for acoustical flow estimation. However, the flow–sound relationship is highly variable among people and it also changes for the same person at different flow rates. Hence, a robust model capable of estimating flow from tracheal sounds at different flow rates in a large group of individuals does not exist. In this paper, a model is proposed to estimate respiratory flow from tracheal sounds. The proposed model eliminates the dependence of the previous methods on calibrating the model for every individual and at different flow rates. To validate the model, it was applied to the respiratory sound and flow data of 93 healthy individuals. We investigated the statistical correlation between the model parameters and anthropometric features of the subjects. The results have shown that gender, height, and smoking are the most significant factors that affect the model parameters. Hence, we grouped nonsmoker subjects into four groups based on their gender and height. The average of model parameters in each group was defined as the group-calibrated model parameters. These models were applied to estimate flow from data of subjects within the same group and in the other groups. The results show that flow estimation error based on the group-calibrated model is less than 10%. The low estimation errors confirm the possibility of defining a general flow estimation model for subjects with similar anthropometric features with no need for calibrating the model parameters for every individual. The mechanical admittance of the soundboards of four full-size concert harps from three manufacturers was measured, and the results show that there is little variation between them. More detailed vibro-acoustic data were then obtained for an Aoyama Amphion harp. Analysis of these data show that the individual soundholes amplify the radiated sound in successive frequency bands associated with the modal frequencies of the soundboard. The lower holes tend to contribute at the lower end of the frequency scale, and the higher holes at the higher end of the scale. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We analyzed cryptophyte nucleomorph 18S rRNA gene sequences retained in natural Myrionecta rubra cells and plastid 16S rRNA gene and psbA sequences retained in natural cells of several Dinophysis species collected from Japanese coastal waters. A total of 715 nucleomorph sequences obtained from 134 M. rubra cells and 564 plastid 16S rRNA gene and 355 psbA sequences from 71 Dinophysis cells were determined. Almost all sequences in M. rubra and Dinophysis spp. were identical to those of Teleaulax amphioxeia, suggesting that M. rubra in Japanese coastal waters preferentially ingest T. amphioxeia. The remaining sequences were closely related to those of Geminigera cryophila and Teleaulax acuta. Interestingly, 37 plastid 16S rRNA gene sequences, which were different from T. amphioxeia and amplified from Dinophysis acuminata and Dinophysis norvegica cells, were identical to the sequence of a D. acuminata cell found in the Greenland Sea, suggesting that a widely distributed and unknown cryptophyte species is also preyed upon by M. rubra and subsequently sequestered by Dinophysis. To confirm the reliability of molecular identification of the cryptophyte Teleaulax species detected from M. rubra and Dinophysis cells, the nucleomorph and plastid genes of Teleaulax species isolated from seawaters were also analyzed. Of 19 isolates, 16 and 3 clonal strains were identified as T. amphioxeia and T. acuta, respectively, and no sequence variation was confirmed within species. T. amphioxeia is probably the primary source of prey for M. rubra in Japanese coastal waters. An unknown cryptophyte may serve as an additional source, depending on localities and seasons. Monolayer lubricant films applied to head-disk interface of hard disk drives consist of bonded and mobile molecules. We measured the diffusion coefficient of mobile molecules that spread through the spaces not covered with bonded molecules and revealed its dependence on the coverage fraction. The diffusion coefficient gradually decreased with increasing coverage from 0.2 to 0.8, and its trend was well represented by reptation theory. However, the diffusion coefficient significantly decreased at a coverage higher than 0.8, in contrast to the prediction of reptation theory. A quartz thickness shear mode (TSM) hulk acoustic wave resonator was used for in situ and real-time detection of liquid flow rate in this study. A special flow chamber made of 2 parallel acrylic plates was designed for flow measurement. The flow chamber has a rectangular flow channel, 2 flow reservoirs for stabilizing the fluid flow, a sensor mounting port for resonator holding, one inlet port, and one outlet port for pipe connection. A 5-MHz TSM quartz resonator was edge-bonded to the sensor mounting port with one side exposed to the flowing liquid and other side exposed to air. The electrical impedance spectra of the quartz resonator at different volumetric flow rate conditions were measured by an impedance analyzer for the extraction of the resonant frequency through a data-fitting method. The fundamental, 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 9th resonant frequency shifts were found to be around 920, 3572, 5947, 8228, and 10300 Hz for flow rate variation from 0 to 3000 mL/min, which had a corresponding Reynolds number change from 0 to 822. The resonant frequency shifts of different modes are found to be quadratic with flow rate, which is attributed to the nonlinear effect of quartz resonator due to the effective normal pressure imposing on the resonator sensor by the flowing fluid. Abstract: Density ρ, speed of sound u, and viscosity η of the binary systems 2-methyl-1-propanol+hexadecane and 2-methyl-1-propanol+squalane (2,6,10,15,19,23-hexamethyltetracosane) have been measured over the entire range of composition at T =(298.15, 303.15, and 308.15)K and atmospheric pressure using a vibrating tube densimeter and sound analyzer Anton Paar model DSA-5000 and Ubbelohde suspended level viscometer. Excess molar volume , excess molar isentropic compressibility , and deviations of the speed of sound uD from their ideal values uid and excess thermal expansion coefficient αE were evaluated from the experimental results obtained. These derived properties were fitted to variable-degree polynomials. Further, the Extended Real Associated Solution (ERAS) model has been applied to for the present binary mixtures along with (2-methyl-1-propanol+hexane,+octane and+decane) and the findings are compared with the experimental results. The structural, electrical, and magnetic properties of thin R-Fe-Ge (R = Y, La, Sc) films have been studied in relation to preparation conditions (annealing temperature and the action of an external electric field on molecular vapor), film thickness, and the size of the crystallites formed in the amorphous matrix. The resistivity and coercivity of the films have been measured at temperatures from 77 to 500 K,. We consider the interaction between an elastic body and a compressible inviscid fluid, which occupies the unbounded exterior domain. The inverse problem of determining the shape of such an elastic scatterer from the measured far field pattern of the scattered fluid pressure field is of central importance in detecting and identifying submerged objects. Following a method proposed by Kirsch and Kress, we approximate the acoustic and elastodynamic wave by potentials over auxiliary surfaces, and we reformulate the inverse problem as an optimization problem. The objective function to be minimized is the sum of three terms. The first is the deviation of the approximate far field pattern from the measured one, the second is a regularization term, and the last a control term for the transmission condition. We prove that the optimization problem has a solution and that, for the regularization parameter tending to zero, the minimizers tend to a solution of the inverse problem. Can we decipher speech content ("what" is being said) and speaker identity ("who" is saying it) from observations of brain activity of a listener? Here, we combine functional magnetic resonance imaging with a data-mining algorithm and retrieve what and whom a person is listening to from the neural fingerprints that speech and voice signals elicit in the listener's auditory cortex. These cortical fingerprints are spatially distributed and insensitive to acoustic variations of the input so as to permit the brain-based recognition of learned speech from unknown speakers and of learned voices from previously unheard utterances. The term ‘molecular magnet’ generally refers to a molecular entity containing several magnetic ions whose coupled spins generate a collective spin, S (ref. 1). Such complex multi-spin systems provide attractive targets for the study of quantum effects at the mesoscopic scale. In these molecules, the large energy barriers between collective spin states can be crossed by thermal activation or quantum tunnelling, depending on the temperature or an applied magnetic field. There is the hope that these mesoscopic spin states can be harnessed for the realization of quantum bits—‘qubits’, the basic building blocks of a quantum computer—based on molecular magnets. But strong decoherence must be overcome if the envisaged applications are to become practical. Here we report the observation and analysis of Rabi oscillations (quantum oscillations resulting from the coherent absorption and emission of photons driven by an electromagnetic wave) of a molecular magnet in a hybrid system, in which discrete and well-separated magnetic clusters are embedded in a self-organized non-magnetic environment. Each cluster contains 15 antiferromagnetically coupled S = 1/2 spins, leading to an S = 1/2 collective ground state. When this system is placed into a resonant cavity, the microwave field induces oscillatory transitions between the ground and excited collective spin states, indicative of long-lived quantum coherence. The present observation of quantum oscillations suggests that low-dimension self-organized qubit networks having coherence times of the order of 100 μs (at liquid helium temperatures) are a realistic prospect. Although recent methodological advances have allowed the incorporation of rate variation in molecular dating analyses, the calibration procedure, performed mainly through fossils, remains resistant to improvements. One source of uncertainty pertains to the assignment of fossils to specific nodes in a phylogeny, especially when alternative possibilities exist that can be equally justified on morphological grounds. Here we expand on a recently developed fossil cross-validation method to evaluate whether alternative nodal assignments of multiple fossils produce calibration sets that differ in their internal consistency. We use an enlarged Crypteroniaceae-centered phylogeny of Myrtales, six fossils, and 72 combinations of calibration points, termed calibration sets, to identify (i) the fossil assignments that produce the most internally consistent calibration sets and (ii) the mean ages, derived from these calibration sets, for the split of the Southeast Asian Crypteroniaceae from their West Gondwanan sister clade (node X). We found that a correlation exists between s values, devised to measure the consistency among the calibration points of a calibration set (Near and Sanderson, 2004), and nodal distances among calibration points. By ranking all sets according to the percent deviation of s from the regression line with nodal distance, we identified the sets with the highest level of corrected calibration-set consistency. These sets generated lower standard deviations associated with the ages of node X than sets characterized by lower corrected consistency. The three calibration sets with the highest corrected consistencies produced mean age estimates for node X of 79.70, 79.14, and 78.15 My. These timeframes are most compatible with the hypothesis that the Crypteroniaceae stem lineage dispersed from Africa to the Deccan plate as it drifted northward during the Late Cretaceous. The article presents two ontological conceptions of sounds which include the unrepeated event (UE) and the repeatable object (RO). In the EU conception, sounds are considered events happening to and depending on material objects, and have temporal parts. The RO conception shares two principles with the EU conception, which state that sounds are particulars rather than universals and are not ordinary space-occupying objects. Lastly, it suggests that RO conception differs from the EU conception in terms of conceiving sounds to be kinds of objects rather than events.

Myosin V is a molecular motor that moves cargo along actin filaments. Its two heads, each attached to a long and relatively stiff neck, move alternately forward in a ‘hand-over-hand’ fashion. To observe under a microscope how the necks move, we attached a micrometer-sized rod to one of the necks. The leading neck swings unidirectionally forward, whereas the trailing neck, once Lifted, undergoes extensive Brownian rotation in all directions before landing on a site ahead of the leading head. The neck-neck joint is essentially free, and the neck motion supports a mechanism where the active swing of the leading neck biases the random motion of the lifted head to let it eventually land on a forward site. Abstract: The paper reports the methods of preparing molecular magnets and patterning of the molecules on a semiconductor surface. A highly magnetically aligned metallothionein containing Mn and Cd (Mn,Cd-MT-2) is first synthesized, and the molecules are then placed into nanopores prepared on silicon (001) surfaces using electron beam lithography and reactive ion-etching techniques. We have observed the self-assemble growth of the MT molecules on the patterned Si surface such that the MT molecules have grown into rod or ring type three-dimensional nanostructures, depending on the patterned nanostructures on the surface. We also provide scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and magnetic force microscope studies of the molecular nanostructures. This engineered molecule shows molecular magnetization and is biocompatible with conventional semiconductors. These features make Mn,Cd-MT-2 a good candidate for biological applications and sensing sources of new nanodevices. Using molecular self-assembly and topographical patterning of the semiconductor substrate, we can close the gap between bio-molecules and nanoelectronics built into the semiconductor chip. A complete analysis of coordinate transformations in elastic media by Milton et al has shown that, in general, the equations of motion are not form invariant and thus do not admit transformation-type solutions of the type discovered by Pendry et al for electromagnetics. However, in a two-dimensional (2D) geometry, the acoustic equations in a fluid are identical in form to the single polarization Maxwell equations via a variable exchange that also preserves boundary conditions. We confirm the existence of transformation-type solutions for the 2D acoustic equations with anisotropic mass via time harmonic simulations of acoustic cloaking. We discuss the possibilities of experimentally demonstrating acoustic cloaking and analyse why this special equivalence of acoustics and electromagnetics occurs only in 2D. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bisphosphoglycerate mutase is an erythrocyte-specific enzyme catalyzing a series of intermolecular phosphoryl group transfer reactions. Its main function is to synthesize 2,3- bisphosphoglycerate, the allosteric effector of hemoglobin. In this paper, we directly observed real-time motion of the enzyme active site and the substrate during phosphoryl transfer. A series of high resolution crystal structures of human bisphosphoglycerate mutase co-crystallized with 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate, representing different time points in the phosphoryl transfer reaction, were solved. These structures not only clarify the argument concerning the substrate binding mode for this enzyme family but also depict the entire process of the key histidine phosphorylation as a "slow movie". It was observed that the enzyme conformation continuously changed during the different states of the reaction. These results provide direct evidence for an "in line" phosphoryl transfer mechanism, and the roles of some key residues in the phosphoryl transfer process are identified. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The establishment of stationary solution concentration in a growing or evaporating droplet of an ideal binary solution (binary droplet) placed in a vapor mixture of constituting substances and passive gas is described analytically. Relations defining time dependences of solution concentration in a droplet, the number of molecules of each constituting component, and droplet radius are derived at known parameters of the vapor-gas mixture and the initial composition of a binary droplet. A neural correlate for phrase boundary perception in music has recently been identified in musicians. It is called music closure positive shift ("music CPS") and has an equivalent in the perception of speech ("language CPS"). The aim of the present study was to investigate the influence of musical expertise and different phrase boundary markers on the music CPS, using event-related brain potentials (ERPs) and event-related magnetic fields (ERFs). Musicians and nonmusicians were tested while listening to binary phrased melodies. ERPs and ERFs of both subject groups differed considerably from each other. Phrased melody versions evoked an electric CPS and a magnetic CPSm in musicians, but an early negativity and a less pronounced CPSm in nonmusicians, suggesting different perceptual strategies for both subject groups. Musicians seem to process musical phrases in a structured manner similar to language. Nonmusicians, in contrast, are thought to detect primarily discontinuity in the melodic input. Variations of acoustic cues in the vicinity of the phrase boundary reveal that the CPS is influenced by a number of parameters that are considered to indicate phrasing in melodies: pause length, length of the last tone preceding the pause, and harmonic function of this last tone. This is taken as evidence that the CPS mainly reflects higher cognitive processing of phrasing, rather than mere perception of pauses. Furthermore, results suggest that the ERP and MEG methods are sensitive to different aspects within phrase perception. For both subject groups, qualitatively different ERP components (CPS and early negativity) seem to reflect a top-down activation of general but different phrasing schemata, whereas quantitatively differing MEG signals appear to reflect gradual differences in the bottom-up processing of acoustic boundary markers. Abstract: The acoustic spectrum of cavities can be identified using integral equation formulations. Because of the transcendental dependence on frequency of the Green function, difficulties arise in calculating acoustic frequencies and modes of vibration when the Kirchhoff–Helmholtz boundary-integral operator is applied. This trouble is circumvented by the present, nonstandard, integral formulation that, by using the fundamental solution of the Laplace operator, allows the identification of acoustic spectra of cavities through solution of a standard eigenvalue problem. This formulation is compared both with that based on the Kirchhoff–Helmholtz operator and with an alternative integral approach introduced in the past that, akin to the one used here, analyzes cavity acoustics in terms of an eigenvalue problem. The majority of the existing models describing the behavior of microbubble ultrasound contrast agents consider single, isolated microbubbles suspended in infinite media. The behavior of a microbubble population is predicted by summing the results for single microbubbles and ignoring multiple scattering effects. The aim of this investigation is to determine the significance of multiple scattering in microbubble populations and establish whether an alternative approach is required. In the first part of the work, linear models are derived to identify approximately the conditions under which multiple scattering may be expected. A nonlinear model for sound propagation in a microbubble suspension then is developed and used to examine multiple scattering at higher insonation pressures. Broadband attenuation measurements are described for two different types of microbubble suspension (albumin encapsulated octofluropropane and copolymer encapsulated isobutane) to ascertain whether or not multiple scattering may be observed experimentally. The results from the simulation work indicate that multiple scattering effects would be discernible at moderate concentrations (106 microbubbles/ml) such as may be present in vivo. The effect upon attenuation in the suspension would be pronounced, however, only if the population contained a sufficient proportion of relatively large (> 4 μm radius) microbubbles excited at their resonance frequency. This also is found to be the case experimentally. The paper investigates the possibility of reverberating a shielded room by means of source mode stirring. The transmitting antenna position and orientation are randomly changed inside a sub-volume of the chamber. In general, antenna displacement can be achieved by a proper design of an array of antennas, where one or more antennas are activated at different time instants. This technique eliminates mechanical rotating paddles inside the chamber, and offers the advantage of a continuous wave (CW) operation with respect to the frequency stirring method. A numerical model of wires in rectangular metal cavities is introduced for computing antennas in a simplified theoretical reverberation chamber. The code is based on the method of moments, and it uses the Ewald summation for efficient calculation of the cavity Green's function. The Q-value of the chamber is accounted for in the model by a homogeneous material filling the chamber. The S-parameters of two dipoles placed in many random positions in the cavity are computed and averaged to provide the average transfer function of the chamber. This represents mode stirring by moving the antennas, referred to as position stirring. The computed results are compared with theoretical statistical values as well as experimental results. Synchronous sexual signalling is a behavioural phenomenon that has received considerable theoretical interest, but surprisingly few empirical tests have been conducted. Here, we present a set of experiments designed to determine (i) whether the sexual signalling of the drumming wolf spider Hygrolycosa rubrofasciata is synchronous, and (ii) whether the synchrony may have evolved through female preference. Using controlled playback experiments, we found that males actively synchronized their drumming bouts with other males and females significantly preferred closely synchronized drumming clusters compared with loose clusters. In loose clusters, the first drumming signals attracted the most female responses, whereas in close clusters, the last drumming signals were the most heeded. We suggest that this female preference for the last drummer can maintain male synchronous signalling in H. rubrofasciata. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

New cyclopentadienyl derivatives of rhodium COD complexes [Cp*=C5H4COOCH2CH&z.dbnd6;CH2 (1); C5H4CH2CH2CH&z.dbnd6;CH2 (2); C5H(i-C3H7)4 (3)] and carbonyl complex [Cp*=C5H(i-C3H7)4 (4)] were synthesized from [RhCl(COD)]2 and [RhCl(CO)2]2. 1, 2 and 3 oxidized by iodine gave iodine bridged dimers 5, 6 and 7, respectively. Triphenyl phosphine, carbon monoxide and carbon disulfide molecules broke down the iodine bridged structure easily and produced monomer products Cp*RhI2L [Cp*=C5H4COOCH2CH&z.dbnd6;CH2, L=CS2 (8); L=PPh3 (9). Cp*=C5H(i-C3H7)4, L=CO (10)]. All of these new compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, 1H NMR, IR, UV–Vis and mass spectroscopy. The crystal structure of 1 was solved in the triclinic space group P1¯ with one molecule in the unit cell, the dimensions of which are a=7.082(9) A˚, b=8.392(3) A˚, c=13.889(5) A˚, α=101.19(3)°, β=99.06(6)°, γ=105.11(5)°, and V=763(1) A˚3. The crystal structure of 3 was solved in the orthorhombic space group Pn21a with four molecules in the unit cell, the dimensions of which are a=9.748(3) A˚, b=16.054(5) A˚, c=14.816(4)A˚ and V=2319(1) A˚3. Least squares refinement leads to values for the conventional R1 of 0.0251 for 1 and 0.0558 for 3, respectively. Compared to that in 1, a shorter metal–ligand bond length in 3 was observed and this is attributed to the rich electron density on Rh(I) metal center piled up by the C5H(i-C3H7)4 ligand. Systematic inefficiencies and internal noise in a spectral profile discrimination task were investigated. Listeners detected a 1000-Hz sinusoid added in-phase to the central component of a complex consisting of 11 equal-intensity sinusoids. Parameters for a channel model that employs decision weights and internal noise were estimated with molecular psychophysical techniques. Maximum likelihood predictions of the model were generally within a few decibels of observed thresholds. In this work, we describe a novel pulse mode shear horizontal-surface acoustic wave (SH-SAW) polymer coated biosensor that monitors rapid changes in both amplitude and phase. The SH-SAW sensors were fabricated on 36° rotated Y-cut X propagating lithium tantalate (36 YX.LT). The sensitivity of the device to both mass loading and visco-elastic effects may be increased by using a thin guiding layer of cross-linked polymer. Two acoustic modes are excited by the electrodes in this crystalline direction. Metallisation of the propagation path of the 36 YX.LT devices allows the two modes to be discriminated. Successive polymer coatings resulted in the observation of resonant conditions in both modes as the layer thickness was increased. Using the 36 YX.LT devices, we have investigated the application of a novel pulse mode system by sensing a sequence of deposition and removal of a biological layer consisting of vesicles of the phospholipid POPC. A continuous wave system was used to verify the accuracy of the pulse mode system by sensing a series of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) solutions. The data clearly demonstrates the ability of the 36 YX.LT pulse mode system to provide rapid measurements of both amplitude and phase for biosensing applications. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Calculations at the B3LYP/6-311+G(d,p)//B3LYP/6-311+G(d,p) level involving the atoms-in-molecules (AIM) and electron localization function (ELF) methods have been carried out for a variety of PO-bond-containing molecules in an effort to further characterize the phosphoryl bond. One cannot distinguish the phosphoryl bond from a conventional PO double bond by comparing bond distances. Both the bond breaking energies and delocalization indices do divide into the three classes of single, double, and phosphoryl and tend to parallel each other. On the basis of the PO bond in HPO having a reference bond order of 2.0, the phosphoryl bond has a bond order of about 1.3. Examination of localized orbitals confirm our ideas that the phosphoryl bond is highly polar as, indeed, are the other PO bonds. What sets the phosphoryl bond apart is the high degree of back-bonding that contributes to the delocalization index (and covalent bond order) and provides for its stronger-than-single-bond character and short bond distance. Three Pipistrellus pygmaeus bats were trained to capture prey on the wing while flying in the laboratory. The bats' capture behaviour and capture success were determined and correlated with acoustic analyses of postbuzz echolocation signals. Three acoustic parameters revealed capture success: in case of success, post-buzz pauses (pbP) were longer, interpulse intervals (IPI) of the post-buzz signals were longer and, most notably, the spectra of the echolocation signals showed a number of notches that were absent after unsuccessful attempts. If the bats touched the prey without seizing it, pbP was significantly increased, but by less than was seen following a successful capture. Thus, acoustic recordings can be used to determine the outcome of a capture attempt with 72-75% correct using IPI or pbP, and with 78% correct using notches. Even more trials (>85%) were classified correctly by using the first canonical discriminant factor from principal component analysis combining the three parameters. Four types of prey were used, of 7-22 mm length and 7-240 mg mass. After successful captures, interpulse intervals, post-buzz pause and notches all depended on prey type, but not in a way that was systematically related to size, indicating that acoustic parameters cannot reveal prey size. By removing the symmetry of a free plate configuration, fluid loading significantly modifies the nature of acoustic waves travelling along a plate, and it even gives existence to new acoustic modes. We present theoretical predictions for the existence, dispersive behavior, and spatial distribution of leaky Lamb waves in a fluid-loaded film. Although Lamb modes are often investigated by studying the radiated fluid waves resulting from their leakage, here their properties are assessed by detecting the wave displacements directly using laser beam deflection. By using crossed laser beam excitation, the detection and analysis of the different modes is done at a fixed wavelength, allowing one to verify the existence, the velocity, and the damping of each predicted mode in a simple and unambiguous way. The surface tensions σ of nonaqueous solutions of n-propyl acetate in caprylic ( n-octanoic) acid were measured between 273 and 303 K using the Wilhelmy plate method. Complicated concentration dependences were obtained, different from any previously reported. In addition, independent volumetric and acoustic (sound velocity and absorption) methods were applied.
