This paper is programmatic: it defines the concept of “phantom borders” and describes its heuristic potential. The proposed approach positions itself between structuralist methodologies that postulate stable social and cultural regional structures and deconstructive viewpoints that reject the former, while focusing on the discursive dimension of regions. The paper takes this tension as its point of departure. Viewed from a situational perspective, phantom borders are neither to be understood as immutable structures nor as purely discursive constructions, but rather as an outcome of the interaction between three interwoven levels, which are simultaneously: 1) imagined in mental maps and discourses, 2) experienced and perceived by the respective actors, and 3) shaped by everyday practices and continuously updated and implemented. Phantom borders are context sensitive. We argue that the topic of phantom borders is not only relevant for research on eastern Europe, but also for research in “new area studies” in general. more...

An International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) workshop was held at Sydney University, Australia, from 13 to 16 June 2017 and was attended by 97 scientists from 12 countries. The aim of the workshop was to investigate future drilling opportunities in the eastern Indian Ocean, southwestern Pacific Ocean, and the Indian and Pacific sectors of the Southern Ocean. The overlying regional sedimentary strata are underexplored relative to their Northern Hemisphere counterparts, and thus the role of the Southern Hemisphere in past global environmental change is poorly constrained. A total of 23 proposal ideas were discussed, with ∼ 12 of these deemed mature enough for active proposal development or awaiting scheduled site survey cruises. Of the remaining 11 proposals, key regions were identified where fundamental hypotheses are testable by drilling, but either site surveys are required or hypotheses need further development. Refinements are anticipated based upon regional IODP drilling in 2017/2018, analysis of recently collected site survey data, and the development of site survey proposals. We hope and expect that this workshop will lead to a new phase of scientific ocean drilling in the Australasian region in the early 2020s. more...

Whether the latitudinal distribution of climate-sensitive lithologies are stable through greenhouse and icehouse regimes remains unclear. Previous studies suggest that the paleolatitudinal distribution of paleoclimate indicators, including coals, evaporites, reefs and carbonates, have remained broadly similar since Permian times, leading to the conclusion that atmospheric and oceanic circulation control their distribution rather than the latitudinal temperature gradient. Here we revisit a global-scale compilation of lithologic indicators of climate, including coals, evaporites and glacial deposits, back to the Devonian period. We test the sensitivity of their latitudinal distributions to the uneven distribution of continental areas through time and to global tectonic models, correct the latitudinal distributions of lithologies for sampling- and continental area-bias, and use statistical methods to fit these distributions with probability density functions and estimate their high-density latitudinal ranges with 50% and 95% confidence intervals. The results suggest that the paleolatitudinal distributions of lithologies have changed through deep geological time, notably a pronounced poleward shift in the distribution of coals at the beginning of the Permian. The distribution of evaporites indicate a clearly bimodal distribution over the past ~400 Ma, except for Early Devonian, Early Carboniferous (Serpukhovian), the earliest Permian (Asselian-Sakmarian) and Middle and Late Jurassic times. We discuss how the patterns indicated from these lithologies change through time in response to plate motion, orography, evolution, and greenhouse/icehouse conditions. Mantle convection shapes Earths surface by generating dynamic topography. Observational constraints and regional convection models suggest that surface topography could be sensitive to mantle flow for wavelengths as short as 1,000 km and 250 km, respectively. At these spatial scales, surface processes including sedimentation and relative sea-level change occur on million year timescales. However, time dependent global mantle flow models do not predict small-scale dynamic topography yet. Here, we present 2D-spherical annulus numerical models of mantle convection with large radial and lateral viscosity contrasts. We first identify the range of Rayleigh number, internal heat production rate and yield stress for which models generate plate-like behaviour, surface heat flow, surface velocities and topography distribution comparable to Earths. These models produce both whole mantle convection and small-scale convection in the upper mantle, which results in small- (< 500 km) to large-scale (> 10^4 km) dynamic topography, with a spectral power for intermediate scales (500 to 10^4 km) comparableto estimates of present-day residual topography. Timescales of convection and the associated dynamic topography vary from five to several hundreds of millions of years. For a Rayleigh number of 10^7, we investigate how lithosphereyield stress variations (10-50 MPa) and the presence of deep thermochemical heterogeneities favour small-scale (200-500 km) and intermediate scale (500-10^4 km) dynamic topography by controlling the formation of small scale convection and the number and distribution of subduction zones, respectively. The interplay between mantle convection and lithosphere dynamics generates a complex spatial and temporal pattern of dynamic topography consistent with constraints for Earth. more...

In global convection models constrained by plume motions and subduction history over the last 230 Myr, plumes emerge preferentially from the edges of thermochemical structures that resemble present-day large low shear velocity provinces (LLSVPs) beneath Africa and the Pacific Ocean. It has been argued that large igneous provinces (LIPs) erupting since 200 Ma may originate from plumes that emerged from the edges of the LLSVPs and numerical models have been devised to validate this hypothesis. Although qualitative assessments that are broadly in agreement with this hypothesis have been derived from numerical models, a quantitative assessment has been lacking. We present a novel plume detection scheme and derive Monte Carlo-based statistical correlations of model plume eruption sites and reconstructed LIP eruption sites. We show that models with a chemically anomalous lower mantle are highly correlated to reconstructed LIP eruption sites, whereas the confidence level obtained for a model with purely thermal plumes falls just short of 95%. A network of embayments separated by steep ridges form in the deep lower mantle in models with a chemically anomalous lower mantle. Plumes become anchored to the peaks of the chemical ridges and the network of ridges acts as a floating anchor, adjusting to slab push forces through time. The network of ridges imposes a characteristic separation between conduits that can extend into the interior of the thermochemical structures. This may explain the observed clustering of reconstructed LIP eruption sites that mostly but not exclusively occur around the present-day LLSVPs. more...

Ein stetig wachsender Anteil des Aufwands zum Entwurf digitaler Schaltungen entfällt auf die funktionale Verifikation. Der Verifikationsraum als Menge aller möglichen Kombinationen von Attributen einer Komponente, d. h. der Parameter und Eingangsdaten, ist oftmals sehr groß, wodurch die Verifikation aller Kombinationen unpraktikabel wird. Deshalb verwenden moderne Methoden der funktionalen Verifikation die zufallsgesteuerte Erzeugung von Stimuli in Verbindung mit manuell definierten Spezialfällen, sog. Corner Cases, um eine möglichst hohe funktionale Abdeckung in der angestrebten Verteilung zu erzielen. Als großer Nachteil diese Ansätze führen steigende Abdeckungsanforderungen zu exponentiell ansteigenden Laufzeiten. Um diesen Nachteil auszugleichen, wurden Generatoren propagiert, die nur solche Kombinationen erzeugen, die nicht bereits abgedeckt worden sind. Leider können die dabei verwendeten Verfahren das Problem nicht zufriedenstellend lösen, da auch sie im Allgemeinen zufällige Kombinationen erzeugen, um in einem zweiten Schritt zu prüfen, ob diese bereits abgedeckt sind. Im vorliegenden Beitrag werden Entscheidungsdiagramme zur Repräsentation aller zulässigen Kombinationen innerhalb des Verifikationsraums verwendet. Mit Hilfe dieses analytischen Modells kann jede beliebige Anzahl von Kombinationen in linearer Zeit erzeugt werden. Wird die vorgestellte Methode auf die Zufallserzeugung zur funktionalen Verifikation angewendet, kann diese um Größenordnungen beschleunigt werden. more...

Der Siegeszug der Mikroelektronik ist faszinierend. In den vergangenen Jahrzehnten bestimmte die Mikroelektronik das Geschehen in der Informationstechnik: Immer leistungsstärkere Computer, vernetzte Systeme und das Internet sind ohne Mikroelektronik nicht denkbar. Weltweit haben Mikroelektronik-Firmen ihre strategischen Ziele im Rahmen einer in regelmäßigen Abständen aktualisierten “Roadmap” niedergelegt. Alle gehen davon aus, dass die bisher zu beobachtende Steigerung der Leistungsfähigkeit mikroelektronischer Produkte auch in den nächsten Jahrzehnten fortgesetzt werden wird. Das bedeutet konkret, dass an vielen Stellen – auch in der heutigen Massenfertigung der Mikroelektronik – die charakteristischen Abmessungen der Einzelelemente im Nanometerbereich liegen, also eigentlich schon als Nanoelektronik bezeichnet werden können. Literatur 248, Die dieser Arbeit zu Grunde liegende Fragestellung ist der journalistischen Praxis von Online-Redakteuren vorzugsweise aus der Computerbranche entnommen. In der Frühphase des Internets, die etwa zwischen 1994 und 2000 angesiedelt werden kann und in der journalistische Anbieter das Neue Medium erstmals verstärkt in Anspruch nahmen, hatte der Online-Journalismus kein klares Bild seiner selbst. Für die Betreiber von Internet-Magazinen stellte sich die grundlegende und für ältere Medien längst geklärte Frage, in welcher Form sie ihren Lesern Nachrichten anbieten sollten. Für den Anbieter war und ist zumindest das Ziel klar: Er will so viel als möglich von seinem Zielpublikum erreichen, das - die später angeführten Statistiken zeichneten ein deutliches Bild ? gerade in den 90er Jahren prinzipiell nur aus gebildeten, jungen Männern bestehen konnte (vgl. unter anderen Wingert 1998; Groebel 1998). Das Problem besteht nach wie vor darin, dass das Neue Medium noch nicht die Zeit hatte zu zeigen, welche Form der Aufbereitung von Nachrichten die attraktivste für das Online- Publikum ist. Entsprechend den theoretischen Vorüberlegungen und den Gegebenheiten der Online- Praxis von im Informationstechnik-Sektor tätigen Redaktionen zu Beginn dieser Arbeit im Jahre 1998 waren drei verschiedene Modelle der formalen Aufbereitung von Nachrichtenangeboten vorstellbar und zumindest ansatzweise durchführbar: 1.) kurze Nachrichten, die einen schnellen Überblick über das Geschehene geben, 2.) ausführliche und stark verlinkte "Riemen", die eine größtmögliche Fülle an Informationen zum Thema bieten, und 3.) "Infotainment"-News mit vielen multimedialen Elementen wie Bildern, Videos und Ton. Letztere waren neu und daher interessant und versprachen darüber hinaus, zu einem Publikumsmagneten zu werden (Meier / Neuberger 1998, S. 10 ? 12). Nach mehreren Fragebogenwellen und einer experimentellen Versuchsanordnung innerhalb des redaktionellen Angebotes von ZDNet.de erwies sich als das grundlegende Ergebnis dieser Dissertation: Publikumsmagnet Nummer eins im Internet sind Nachrichtenangebote, die ein Maximum an weiterführenden Hyperlinks anbieten. Das Kriterium "Verlinkung" schlägt - wie in Kapitel 11 gesehen - sogar das Kriterium "Kürze", das nichts desto trotz ebenfalls hoch in der Gunst der Anwender steht. Das Kriterium "Multimedialität" dagegen, das 1998 laut Loosen und Weischenberg (1999) sehr hoch in der Gunst der Anbieter gestanden hat, ist für den Großteil der User ein Grund zum Nicht-Klicken., My work concerns the question of information usage in the information age. Information usage is one of the classic questions of medium psychology (Trepte 1999) and is consulted again and again in the Medium uses science as basis for further research (Saxer 1998). The question about formal selection criteria is one of the basic questions of the medium sciences (Donsbach 1988). The focus of my study is content usage on the Internet, which will be examined on specific subjective and formal aspects. My work narrows its focus on the usage of news stories. The analysis of news usage with a strong communications scientific perspective is concerned more with the exploration of user behavior than with their deep- seated contents of consciousness. The exclusion of this content was provided for in order to ensure that the analysis could take place on the basis of formal criteria, which are decisive for the selection process. Formal criteria for reading news in the Internet taken into consideration were: placement of a news story on a page, navigation by scroll bars, frames, page layout including colour, degree of integration with other content through links, multimedia elements (gif animations, video, sound, graphics, databases, statistics), story length, etc.. This work can be summarised into three concrete questions: * Which type of news stories addresses which population group? * Which variables influence the information usage behavior of Internet users? * Which criteria specifically attract the so-called information elite? To answer these questions a multi-method-study consisting of usage tracking and questionnaire was carried out. In the study, which already took place in June 1999, the effect of different arguments - in this case the formal criteria of the presentation of news in the Internet - was examined. The analysis took place quantitatively via a frequency analysis of the obtained page visits. First it had to be clarified which types of news presentation are found on the Internet. The result: there are three basic types: 1.) extremely compact, 2.) highly hyperlinked and 3.) multimedia-focussed presentations. In the experiment, users had to chose between these three presentation types. These three types were installed by me within a single editorial unit - in this case the news channel of the technology-oriented site ZDNet Germany. After one month and 1552 completed questionnaires the results show: A majority of users (26.946) selected the hyperlink-rich presentations. Slightly fewer (25.916) selected the short versions. Here the external influences such as time and online costs lead to the fact that in many cases usage takes place as rapidly as possible. Die vorliegende Arbeit befaßt sich mit dem Entwurf eines Systems zur Realisierung der formvariablen Hinterkante eines Tragflügels. Zielsetzung der formvariablen Hinterkante ist die Verbesserung der aerodynamischen Leistung zukünftiger Verkehrsflugzeuge durch eine Profilanpassung (Wölbung) mit glatten Übergängen. Bei dem hier vorgestellten sog. Hornkonzept werden mehrere hornförmige Tragkörper an dem starren Vorderkasten einer Landeklappe drehbar gelagert. Über diese Tragkörper wird eine flexible Hautstruktur gespannt, welche ihre Flexibilität aus biegeweichen Stegen erhält. Durch Drehung der Tragkörper wird der Haut die Form der Tragkörper aufgezwungen. Kennzeichnend sind die robuste und einfache Bauform, die wenigen beweglichen Bauteile und die vergleichsweise geringen Stellkräfte. Am Beispiel der A340 wird die prinzipielle Funktionsfähigkeit des Konzeptes gezeigt. Mit Finite-Elemente-Modellen wird das Steifigkeits- und Festigkeitsverhalten der einzelnen Strukturkomponenten analysiert. Es wird ein Aktuatorsystem ausgewählt, bei dem nur zwei Aktuatoren für eine Landeklappe erforderlich sind. Die Kopplung der einzelnen Tragkörper erfolgt dabei mit elastischen Stäben. Es wird gezeigt, daß sich solch ein Aktuatorsystem unter Beibehaltung aller Anforderungen realisieren läßt. Die praktische Überprüfung der Funktionsfähigkeit des Hornkonzeptes erfolgt mit dem Bau eines Demonstrators. Zur Herstellung der Tragkörper aus CFK wird ein spezielles Fertigungsverfahren entwickelt, erprobt und für den Bau der drei Tragkörper am Demonstrator eingesetzt. Die Standfestigkeit der Struktur wird mit Dauerbelastungstests nachgewiesen. Die Realisierbarkeit des Hornkonzeptes für eine in die Flügelstruktur integrierte reale Landeklappe wird mit Hilfe eines Gesamtmodells untersucht. Es wird eine optimale Konfiguration gefunden, bei der die Steifigkeit der Originalklappe erreicht wird, ohne daß es zu einem Gewichtszuwachs kommt., The present work deals with the design and the realisation of a flexible trailing edge system. Goal of the flexible trailing edge system witch consists of a smooth variable cambering is the improvement of the aerodynamic performance for future airliner. The 'Hornconcept' is introduced. Several of hornlike shaped structures are rotatable mounted at a rigid leading edge box of the flap structure. The hornlike structures are covered with a flexible skin structure. The upper and lower skin is connected with flexible webs which gives stiffness in spanwise direction. By turning the horns, the skin structure is forced to adapt the form of the shape of the horns. The main characteristic of the concept is the simple and robust design, the small number of moveable parts and the low necessary actuator forces. The functionality of the concept is shown with the outer flap of the A340 as a reference system. The structural behaviour (stiffness and stress) of the different components is analysed. An actuator system is selected and designed where only two actuators are necessary. The coupling of the individual horns is made with elastic rods. It is shown that such an actuator system fulfils all requirements. With the construction of a demonstrator the practical functionality is analysed. For the manufacturing of the hornlike structures with carbon fiber a special manufacturing process is developed and tested. The process is used for the assembly of the demonstrator. With lifecycle tests the stability of the structure is proved. A finite element model of the whole system with the interacting of horn structure and skin is developed. With this model and with the results of experimental analysis an optimum configuration is found by observance the stiffness requirements. It can be shown that in all load cases the stresses for the structural components are in the limits and the functionality of the concept is kept. more...
