The Internet of Things (IoT) is expected to transform the way we live, work, and learn. Using IoT could thus be a game-changer for municipalities towards sustainability. The Swedish municipality of Södertälje strives to develop IoT concepts and use open data for a sustainable and inclusive society. The goal of this study was to explore how IoT can enable route optimization and placement planning for increased operational efficiency. The goal was also to enhance the knowledge of the environmental and social benefits of IoT systems in the waste collection system in Södertälje. The analysis is based on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and interviews. The results show a minor climate change impact for the IoT solutions in the overall smart waste collection system. The major climate impact contributor was instead associated with the trash bags used. Additionally, the study showed that the performance of the system relies on smart planning of the operations and the transportations.

Abstract Identifying cell types and brain regions critical for psychiatric disorders and brain traits is essential for targeted neurobiological research. By integrating genomic insights from genome-wide association studies with a comprehensive single-cell transcriptomic atlas of the adult human brain, we prioritized specific neuronal clusters significantly enriched for the SNP-heritabilities for schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorder along with intelligence, education, and neuroticism. Extrapolation of cell-type results to brain regions reveals the whole-brain impact of schizophrenia genetic risk, with subregions in the hippocampus and amygdala exhibiting the most significant enrichment of SNP-heritability. Using functional MRI connectivity, we further confirmed the significance of the central and lateral amygdala, hippocampal body, and prefrontal cortex in distinguishing schizophrenia cases from controls. Our findings underscore the value of single-cell transcriptomics in understanding the polygenicity of psychiatric disorders and suggest a promising alignment of genomic, transcriptomic, and brain imaging modalities for identifying common biological targets.

Abstract Background Autism is associated with alterations of social communication, such as during face-to-face interactions. This study aimed to probe face processing in autistics with normal IQ utilizing magnetoencephalography to examine event-related fields within the fusiform gyrus during face perception. Methods A case–control cohort of 22 individuals diagnosed with autism and 20 age-matched controls (all male, age 29.3 ± 6.9 years) underwent magnetoencephalographic scanning during an active task while observing neutral faces, face-like pareidolic objects, and non-face objects. The fusiform face area was identified using a face localizer for each participant, and the cortical activation pattern was normalized onto an average brain for subsequent analysis. Results Early post-stimulus activation amplitudes (before 100–200 ms) indicated differentiation between stimuli containing fundamental facial features and non-face objects in both groups. In contrast, later activation (400–550 ms) differentiated real faces from both pareidolic and non-face objects across both groups and faces from objects in controls but not in autistics. There was no effect of autistic-like traits. Conclusions The absence of group differences in early activation suggest intact face detection in autistics possessing a normal IQ. Later activation captures a greater degree of the complexity and social information from actual faces. Although both groups distinguished faces from pareidolic and non-face objects, the control group exhibited a slightly heightened differentiation at this latency, indicating a potential disadvantage for autistics in real face processing. The subtle difference in late-stage face processing observed in autistic individuals may reflect specific cognitive mechanisms related to face perception in autism.

The diagnosis, treatment, and management of gynecologic malignancies benefit from both positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) and MRI. PET/CT provides important information on the local extent of disease as well as diffuse metastatic involvement. MRI offers soft tissue delineation and loco-regional disease involvement. The combination of these two technologies is key in diagnosis, treatment planning, and evaluating treatment response in gynecological malignancies. This review aims to assess the performance of PET/MRI in gynecologic cancer patients and outlines the technical challenges and clinical advantages of PET/MR systems when specifically applied to gynecologic malignancies.

Abstract Purpose To study the trend of delayed sequential bilateral cataract surgery (DSBCS) in Sweden in the past decade. Methods This register-based cohort study utilized data from the Swedish National Cataract Register (NCR) from 2010 through 2019. Register files from patients who underwent cataract surgery in both eyes during the study period were linked using their social security numbers. Bilateral surgeries on different days were classified as DSBCS. The study investigated the association between DSBCS within 3 months and several variables with stratification and multivariate logistic regression. The following variables were used: operation year, region, private or public unit, age, sex, indication for surgery, type of intraocular lens (IOL), preoperative visual acuity, ocular comorbidity, posterior capsule rupture and perioperative difficulties. Results During the study period, 368,106 patients underwent DSBCS, of which 62.6% (n = 230,331) had bilateral surgery within 3 months. The median time between the surgeries was 61 days (interquartile range 26–161 days), showing regional variations. Better visual acuity in the fellow eye, presence of ocular comorbidity, various perioperative events and complications were associated with longer time to surgery of the second eye. Conversely, cataract surgery in more recent years, private clinic, increasing age, anisometropia and multifocal IOL were associated with shorter timespan between surgeries. Conclusions The majority of DSBCS were conducted within a 3-month timeframe, with the interval between surgeries decreasing throughout the study period. Several rational factors were associated with the time difference, in addition to regional variations. Many patients would probably benefit from less time between the surgeries, and we encourage a clinical practice taking the whole patient’s visual function into account.

Abstract Multiple neural mechanisms underlying gating to working memory have been proposed with divergent results obtained in human and animal studies. Previous findings from non-human primates suggest prefrontal beta frequency bursts as a correlate of transient inhibition during selective encoding. Human studies instead suggest a similar role for sensory alpha power fluctuations. To cast light on these discrepancies we employed a sequential working memory task with distractors for human participants. In particular, we examined their whole-brain electrophysiological activity in both alpha and beta bands with the same single-trial burst analysis earlier performed on non-human primates. Our results reconcile earlier findings by demonstrating that both alpha and beta bursts in humans correlate with the filtering and control of memory items, but with region and task-specific differences between the two rhythms. Occipital beta burst patterns were selectively modulated during the transition from sensory processing to memory retention whereas prefrontal and parietal beta bursts tracked sequence order and were proactively upregulated prior to upcoming target encoding. Occipital alpha bursts instead increased during the actual presentation of unwanted sensory stimuli. Source reconstruction additionally suggested the involvement of striatal and thalamic alpha and beta. Thus, specific whole-brain burst patterns correlate with different aspects of working memory control.

Abstract Structural- and functional heterogeneity, as well as allosteric regulation, in homo-monomeric enzymes is a highly active area of research. One such enzyme is human nuclear-associated deoxyuridine 5’-triphosphate nucleotidohydrolase (dUTPase), which has emerged as an interesting drug target in combination therapy with traditional nucleotide analogue treatment of cancer. We report, for the first time, a full structural dynamics study of human dUTPase by NMR. dUTPase has been investigated in terms of structural dynamics in its apo form, in complex with the modified substrate resistant to hydrolysis, 2’-deoxyuridine 5’-α,β-imido-triphosphate (dUpNHpp), as well as the product, 2’-deoxy-uridine-monophosphate (dUMP). The apo form of the enzyme displayed slow dynamics in the milli- to microsecond regime in relaxation dispersion experiments, which was further slowed down to observable heterogeneity upon substrate-analogue binding. The results suggest that the non-hydrolysable substrate-analogue traps the enzyme in the conformational isomerization step that has been previously suggested to be part of the enzyme catalysis kinetics cycle. The observed heterogeneity fits well with the pattern expected to emerge from the suggested kinetic model, and no evidence for homotropic allosterism was found. The heatmaps of the slow dynamics, chemical shift perturbation upon substrate binding and conserved regions of the enzyme sequence all displayed a similar pattern, which suggests that the structural dynamics is finely tuned and important for the biological function of the enzyme for binding, conformational shift, catalysis and substrate release.

Abstract The social risks of green energy transition are underexplored. One of the important questions is which materials used in green energy technologies offer the greatest social benefits, such as ensuring decent living conditions, and which pose the most social risks. To address this issue, we develop a dynamic material-energy flow model integrating system dynamics, social life cycle assessment, and geometallurgical approaches. The analysis focuses on critical materials: Rare Earth Elements, Nickel, Silicon, Graphite, Magnesium, Gallium, Germanium, Indium, Aluminum, Cobalt, Lithium, Zinc, and Tellurium used in wind turbines, electric vehicles, lithium-ion batteries and solar photovoltaic panels. We assess their social impact on work safety, gender equality, informal employment, labor income share, employment rate, and child labor—key issues addressed by Sustainable Development Goals 1, 5, and 8. Here we show that Aluminum production for electric vehicles, wind turbines and solar photovoltaic panels generates the most jobs and income opportunities, while extraction of Cobalt, Lithium, Silicon, and Zinc carry the highest social risks.

Background: Tenecteplase is increasingly used off-label as an alternative to alteplase for ischemic stroke thrombolysis. Our aim was to evaluate the safety of tenecteplase versus alteplase in comprehensive real-world data. Methods: We compared the outcomes for adult patients with acute ischemic stroke treated with alteplase or tenecteplase, registered in the Swedish Stroke Register between January 1, 2018 and December 31, 2020. The primary outcome was symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage or death during hospital stay. Secondary outcomes were death within 90 days, modified Rankin Scale at 90 days, and mean door-to-needle time (DNT). Results: There were no significant differences in age or risk factors between 6,560 patients (45% women, mean age 74) treated with alteplase and 888 patients (43% women, mean age 74) treated with tenecteplase, although tenecteplase was more commonly used in non-university hospitals, hospitals with high use of thrombolysis, and in wake-up strokes. Tenecteplase was not non-inferior compared to alteplase in terms of symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage or death during hospital stay (13.2% vs. 10.7%, absolute risk difference [95% confidence interval, CI] 2.5% [0.1 to 4.9%], adjusted odds ratio 1.44 [1.07–1.94]). There were no significant differences in functional outcome or death at 90 days, but tenecteplase was associated with decreased DNT (mean difference 9 min). Conclusion: Tenecteplase was not non-inferior in safety outcome, although associated with decreased DNT. As accumulating randomized controlled studies support the non-inferiority of tenecteplase regarding functional outcome, it is important to keep scrutinizing the safety outcomes.

Background:Accurate tumor detection and quantification are important for optimized therapy planning and evaluation. Total tumor burden is also an appealing biomarker for clinical trials. Manual examination and annotation of oncologic PET/CT is labor-intensive and demands a high level of expertise. One significant challenge is the risk for human error, leading to potential omission of especially small tumors and tumors with low FDG uptake.Purpose: In this study, we introduced an automated framework with segmentation prior, from a tissue-wise multi-channel multi-angled based approach, to enhance tumor segmentation in whole-body FDG-PET/CT.Method: The proposed framework utilized a segmentation prior generated from tumor segmentations in tissue-wise multi-channel projections of the standardized uptake value (SUV) from PET. Projections were created from various angles and the tissues were identified based on their CT Hounsfield values. The resulting segmentation masks were subsequently backprojected into a unified 3D volume for creation of the segmentation prior. Finally, the segmentation prior was provided as an additional input channel along with the CT and SUV images to three variants of 3D segmentation networks (3D UNet, dynUNet, nnUNet) to enhance the overall tumor segmentation performance. All the methods were independently evaluated using 5-fold cross-validation on the autoPET dataset and subsequently tested on the U-CAN dataset.Results:Combining the segmentation prior with the original SUV and CT images improved overall tumor segmentation performance significantly compared to a baseline network. The increase in Dice coefficient for lymphoma, lung cancer, and melanoma across different segmentation networks were: 3D UNet (0.04⁎, 0.02⁎, 0.11⁎), dynUNet (0.05⁎, 0.04⁎, 0.08⁎), and nnUNet (0.02⁎, 0.00ns, 0.03⁎), respectively; *, p-value < 0.05; ns, non-significance.Conclusion: The increased segmentation accuracy could be attributed to the segmentation prior generated from tissue-wise SUV projections, revealing information from various tissues that was useful for segmentation of tumors. The results from this study highlight the potential of the proposed method as a valuable future tool for time-efficient quantification of tumor burden in oncologic FDG-PET/CT.

I fokus står vita migranter med en erkänd uppsättning privilegier avseende nationalitet, medborgarskap, och kompetens; tillgångar som öppnar för nya sätt att producera och reproducera kulturella, sociala och ekonomiska former av kapital. Som objektiverat och institutionaliserat kulturellt kapital finns vitheten i institutioner, pass eller visumpolitik, som alla innebär att människor som klassificeras som vita kan uppleva det mest upphöjda tillståndet av att känna sig hemmastadda nästan var som helst i världen. I kölvattnet av en globaliserad historia av rastänkande och europeisk kolonialisering positioneras dock vita grupper på olika sätt i det transnationella sociala rummet. Vithet som kulturellt kapital är med andra ord å ena sidan sammanflätat med historier om koloniala rasstrukturer, och utmanas å den andra av global konkurrens, där framför allt den asiatiska synen på vithet ställer den europeiska vitheten i nytt ljus.

Iron ore pellet production processes produce large amounts of CO2 emissions when burning fossil fuels. One example is the grate-kiln process, where normally a coal flame is used to indurate pellets. To mitigate the emissions, coal used in rotary kilns can be replaced with for example hydrogen. However, the fuel is mixed with secondary process air, and replacing a solid fuel with a gaseous one changes the mixing characteristics. This demands different means of injecting the fuel. A coaxial jet can be used to control the mixing of fuel and secondary air, as well as the flow field. The aim is to control the mixing of hydrogen and secondary air to achieve a hydrogen flame that is similar to the reference coal flame. This study numerically investigates different coaxial jet configurations. Steady-state simulations of a simplified model of the real kiln are performed using a Reynolds Stress turbulence model. Results show that decreasing the momentum flow ratio between the outer and inner jet, [Formula: see text], to a certain value delays the spread of the hydrogen jet and thus gives a longer jet. Further decreasing this ratio gives an even longer jet, but has the side effect of producing recirculation of hydrogen.

Background A substantial proportion of individuals with COPD have never smoked, and it is implied to be more common than previously anticipated but poorly studied.Aim To describe the process of recruitment of never-smokers with COPD from a population-based cohort (n = 30 154).Methods We recruited never-smokers with COPD, aged 50–75 years, from six University Hospitals, based on: 1) post broncho-dilator forced expiratory volume in 1 second/forced vital capacity (FEV1/FVC) < 0.70 and 2) FEV1 50–100% of predicted value and 3) being never-smokers (self-reported). In total 862 SCAPIS participants were identified, of which 652 were reachable and agreed to a first screening by telephone. Altogether 128 (20%) were excluded due to previous smoking or declined participation. We also applied a lower limit of normal (LLN) of FEV1/FVC (z-score 100% of predicted (26%) or z-score ≥ −1,64 (24%). Finally, 154 never-smokers with COPD were included: 56 (36%) women, (mean) age 60 years, FEV1 84% of predicted, FEV1/FVC: 0.6, z-score: −2.2, Oxygen saturation: 97% and BMI: 26.8 kg/m2.Conclusions The challenges of a recruitment process of never-smokers with COPD were shown, including the importance of correct spirometry testing and strict inclusion criteria. Our findings highlight the importance of repeated spirometry assessments for improved accuracy in diagnosing COPD.

Abstract Background Despite pain control being a top priority in end-of-life care, pain continues to be a troublesome symptom and comprehensive data on pain prevalence and pain relief in patients with different diagnoses are scarce. Methods The Swedish Register of Palliative Care (SRPC) was used to retrieve data from 2011 to 2022 about pain during the last week of life. Data were collected regarding occurrence of pain, whether pain was relieved and occurrence of severe pain, to examine if pain differed between patients with cancer, heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and dementia. Binary logistic regression models adjusted for sex and age were used. Results A total of 315 000 patients were included in the study. Abstract Background Parenteral fluid (PF) therapy of patients in end-of-life (EOL) is controversial. The purpose of this study was to assess associations between PF, quality of the EOL care process and symptom burden in dying cancer patients, using a population-based approach. Methods This was a nationwide retrospective register study of all adult cancer deaths with documented information on PF in the last 24 h of life as reported to the Swedish Register of Palliative Care during a three-year period (n = 41,709). Prevalence and relief of symptoms during the last week of life as well as EOL care process quality indicators were assessed in relation to PF in those patients who had a documented decision to focus on EOL care (immediately dying, n = 23,112). Odds ratios were calculated, adjusting for place of death (hospital vs. non-hospital). Results PF was administered to 30.9% of immediately dying patients in hospitals compared to 6.5% outside of hospitals. PF was associated with a higher likelihood for breathlessness and nausea. In patients screened for EOL symptoms with a validated instrument, PF was inversely associated with the likelihood of complete relief of breathlessness, respiratory secretions, anxiety, nausea and pain. Several palliative care quality indicators were inversely associated with PF, including EOL conversations and prescriptions of injectable drugs as needed. These associations were more pronounced in hospitals. Conclusions Parenteral fluid therapy in the last 24 h of life was associated with inferior quality of the EOL care process and with increased symptom burden in imminently dying cancer patients.

Abstract This study focuses on the effect of an emerging source of waste, lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cathode materials, on the hydrometallurgical recycling of the currently dominant industrial battery waste that is rich in transition metals (Ni, Co, Mn, and Li). The effects of the dosage of LFP, initial acidity, and timing of LFP reductant addition were investigated in sulfuric acid (H2SO4) leaching (t = 3 h, T = 60 °C, ω = 300 rpm). The results showed that addition of LFP increased both transition metal extraction and acid consumption. Further, the redox potential was lowered due to the increased presence of Fe2+. An initial acidity of 2.0 mol/L H2SO4 with acid consumption of 1.3 kg H2SO4/kg black mass provided optimal conditions for achieving a high leaching yield (Co = 100%, Ni = 87.6%, Mn = 91.1%, Li = 100%) and creating process solutions (Co 8.8 g/L, Ni 13.8 g/L, Li 6.7 g/L, Mn 7.6 g/L, P 12.1 g/L) favorable for subsequent hydrometallurgical processing. Additionally, the overall efficiency of H2O2 decreased due to its decomposition by high concentrations of Fe2+ and Mn2+ when H2O2 was added after t = 2 h, leading to only a minor increase in final battery metals extraction levels.
