Abstract

This research is intended to examine the phenomenon of torture from a perspective as comprehensive as possible. Starting from definitions of torture in international law and discussing a wide range of literature, it focuses on its individual, relational and socio-political aspects. The aim of the research is to contribute to the development of a concise and integrated framework of understanding of torture based on psychoanalytic thinking that enable the examination of different levels of the phenomenon as well as a dialogue between psychoanalysis and human rights on the topic of torture. After a critical review of the literature that addresses the socio-political key features and the relational and individual aspects of social actors involved, the main framework of understanding of the phenomenon of torture is constructed through a selection of psychoanalytic theories on the functioning of self and its main dynamic principles. The main conceptual elements of this framework are those of splintered reflective triangle, monolithic self states and monolithic societal states, which are the original contributions of this .thesis but well grounded on existing psychoanalytic literature. They are an elaboration of selected key themes of psychoanalytic contributions of authors from different theoretical approaches (British Object Relations Theory, Relational Psychoanalysis and Analytical Psychology). These concepts with their emotional, relational and cognitive facets, aim to account for the crucial relational ' dynamics in torture that address the different but interconnected levels of experience in the social actors of torture. This framework is used to initiate a dialogue with the human rights field on the debate of permissibility of torture and other relevant themes, illustrating further lines of possible development for this study.

Abstract

O turismo sustentavel esta sendo consolidado em nivel internacional comouma abordagem que deve ser concretizada para que todos os tipos de turismosejam beneficiados ambientalmente, socialmente e economicamente, de modoa maximizar o “desenvolvimento sustentavel” (OYOLA et. al., 2012). A OrganizacaoMundial do Turismo (OMT), orgao das Nacoes Unidas (ONU), recomendou assuas nacoes-membros que o turismo, a partir do ano de 2007, fosse consolidadocomo agente-chave na luta contra a pobreza e as mazelas sociais.Neste enfoque, o turismo foi considerado uma das prioridades do GovernoFederal na gestao 2003-2007, momento este em que foi criado o Ministerio doTurismo do Brasil, e junto a ele, uma diversidade de planos, programas e projetosque buscam alcancar o desenvolvimento sustentavel, promover o desenvolvimentosocioeconomico e reduzir as desigualdades sociais dos destinos turisticos.As novas diretrizes para o desenvolvimento do turismo continuam sendopautadas pelo Codigo Mundial da Etica do Turismo (OMT) e, sao apresentadaspela primeira vez no Brasil, no Plano Nacional de Turismo 2007-2010, num textoalusivo ao combate a exploracao sexual de criancas e adolescentes ligada a atividadeturistica. Eis sua manifestacao: “a acao ministerial deve considerar prioritariaa protecao de criancas e adolescentes por meio da tematica de turismo sustentavele infância” (BRASIL, 2007, p. 15). Assim como ao [...] combate ao trabalho infantil e a exploracao sexual de criancas e adolescentes, e o compromisso coma sustentabilidade dos destinos turisticos brasileiros [...] (BRASIL, 2007, p. 75).“Essa exploracao sexual de menores e tida como um dos efeitos sociais nao desejaveisdo turismo e opoe-se ao que se compreende por turismo sustentavel”.(ZOAUIN; OLIVEIRA, 2008, p.3). Beni (2001) ressalta que, embora nao haja muitosdados fidedignos disponiveis, sabe-se por relatos de pesquisas, que o chamado“turismo sexual” vem crescendo no pais. O crescimento do fenomeno e tambemcorroborado por Roby (2005) onde relata que cerca de 1,2 milhoes de mulheres emeninas entram no comercio sexual a cada ano, gerando para os Estados Unidos1,5 bilhoes de dolares anualmente para seus exploradores. Entre 30% e 35% dasvitimas sao meninas com menos de 18 anos de idade.

3. The mark of torture and the therapeutic relationship.

Abstract

The title of this paper, 'The mark of torture,' comes from the clinical insight that in the intersubjective field of therapy for torture survivors a distinct set of motives tends to repeat itself. These motives are here conceptualized as 'perversion-like states', since they present features and dynamics that can also be found in the so-called 'perversions'. However, the limits and the sense of the use of this term will be discussed and clarified. It is argued that such states are the result of the perverse traumatic experiences of torture in which trauma represents only the pars destruens of the process, the disrupting device that disintegrates the previous psychological organization and leaves posttraumatic symptoms as traces of the impact of this experience; while the 'perversion' constructs and converts the functioning of mind - pars construens - through its characteristic use of body and pain. It is assumed that this happens through an implicit registration of the experience that may or may not reach the point of changing the characteristics of the person's object relations. A clinical vignette outlining the development of a particular course of therapy with a torture survivor will illustrate some of these peculiar aspects. This paper implies that a well-founded understanding of these aspects in the interpersonal dynamics of therapy may help the therapeutic dyad to unpack crucial themes created by torture, thus accelerating the patient's progress towards recovery.
