We present a mathematical theory of metastable pure states in closed many-body quantum systems with finite-dimensional Hilbert space. Given a Hamiltonian, a pure state is defined to be metastable when all sufficiently local operators either stabilize the state, or raise its average energy. We prove that short-range entangled metastable states are necessarily eigenstates (scars) of a perturbatively close Hamiltonian. Given any metastable eigenstate of a Hamiltonian, in the presence of perturbations, we prove the presence of prethermal behavior: local correlation functions decay at a rate bounded by a time scale nonperturbatively long in the inverse metastability radius, rather than Fermi's Golden Rule. Inspired by this general theory, we prove that the lifetime of the false vacuum in certain $d$-dimensional quantum models grows at least as fast as $\exp(\epsilon^{-d} \log^{-3} \epsilon^{-1} )$, where $\epsilon\rightarrow 0$ is the relative energy density of the false vacuum; up to logarithms, this lower bound matches, for the first time, explicit calculations using quantum field theory. We identify metastable states at finite energy density in the PXP model, along with exponentially many metastable states in "helical" spin chains and the two-dimensional Ising model. Inspired by the hunt for new phases of matter in quantum mixed states, it has recently been proposed that the equivalence of microcanonical and canonical ensembles in statistical mechanics is a manifestation of strong-to-weak spontaneous symmetry breaking (SWSSB) in an underlying many-body quantum description. Here, we build an effective field theory for SWSSB of a global U(1) symmetry; the answer exactly reproduces the Schwinger-Keldysh effective field theory of diffusion for the conserved charge. We conclude that hydrodynamics can be understood as a theory of "superfluidity" for the broken strong symmetry: a non-vanishing susceptibility is a measurable order parameter for SWSSB, the diffusion mode is the Goldstone boson of the spontaneously broken continuous symmetry, and a generalization of Goldstone's Theorem implies that the diffusion mode is always long-lived. This perspective provides a transparent physical explanation for the unusual "reparameterization" symmetries which are a necessary ingredient of Schwinger-Keldysh effective field theories for "normal fluids".

We revisit the theory of dissipative mechanics in RLC circuits, allowing for circuit elements to have nonlinear constitutive relations, and for the circuit to have arbitrary topology. We systematically generalize the dissipationless Hamiltonian mechanics of an LC circuit to account for resistors and incorporate the physical postulate that the resulting RLC circuit thermalizes with its environment at a constant positive temperature. Our theory explains stochastic fluctuations, or Johnson noise, which are mandated by the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. Assuming Gaussian Markovian noise, we obtain exact expressions for multiplicative Johnson noise through nonlinear resistors in circuits with convenient (parasitic) capacitors and/or inductors. With linear resistors, our formalism is describable using a Kubo-Martin-Schwinger-invariant Lagrangian formalism for dissipative thermal systems. Generalizing our technique to quantum circuits could lead to an alternative way to study decoherence in nonlinear superconducting circuits without the Caldeira-Leggett formalism., Comment: 30 pages, 6 figures

Quantum error correction protects logical quantum information against environmental decoherence by encoding logical qubits into entangled states of physical qubits. One of the most important near-term challenges in building a scalable quantum computer is to reach the break-even point, where logical quantum circuits on error-corrected qubits achieve higher fidelity than equivalent circuits on uncorrected physical qubits. Using Quantinuum's H2 trapped-ion quantum processor, we encode the GHZ state in four logical qubits with fidelity $ 99.5 \pm 0.15 \% \le F \le 99.7 \pm 0.1\% $ (after postselecting on over 98% of outcomes). Using the same quantum processor, we can prepare an uncorrected GHZ state on four physical qubits with fidelity $97.8 \pm 0.2 \% \le F\le 98.7\pm 0.2\%$. The logical qubits are encoded in a $[\![ 25,4,3 ]\!]$ Tanner-transformed long-range-enhanced surface code. Logical entangling gates are implemented using simple swap operations. We prove the existence of extensive many-body Hamiltonians with few-body interactions and a many-body mobility edge: all eigenstates below a nonzero energy density are localized in an exponentially small fraction of "energetically allowed configurations" within Hilbert space. Our construction is based on quantum perturbations to a classical low-density parity check code. We provide a systematic framework for constructing generic models of nonequilibrium quantum dynamics with a target stationary (mixed) state. Our framework identifies (almost) all combinations of Hamiltonian and dissipative dynamics that relax to a steady state of interest, generalizing the Davies' generator for dissipative relaxation at finite temperature to nonequilibrium dynamics targeting arbitrary stationary states. We focus on Gibbs states of stabilizer Hamiltonians, identifying local Lindbladians compatible therewith by constraining the rates of dissipative and unitary processes. Moreover, given terms in the Lindbladian not compatible with the target state, our formalism identifies the operations -- including syndrome measurements and local feedback -- one must apply to correct these errors. Our methods also reveal new models of quantum dynamics: for example, we provide a "measurement-induced phase transition" where measurable two-point functions exhibit critical (power-law) scaling with distance at a critical ratio of the transverse field and rate of measurement and feedback. Time-reversal symmetry -- defined naturally within our formalism -- can be broken both in effectively classical, and intrinsically quantum, ways. Passive error correction protects logical information forever (in the thermodynamic limit) by updating the system based only on local information and few-body interactions. A paradigmatic example is the classical two-dimensional Ising model: a Metropolis-style Gibbs sampler retains the sign of the initial magnetization (a logical bit) for thermodynamically long times in the low-temperature phase. Known models of passive quantum error correction similarly exhibit thermodynamic phase transitions to a low-temperature phase wherein logical qubits are protected by thermally stable topological order. Here, in contrast, we show that certain families of constant-rate classical and quantum low-density parity check codes have no thermodynamic phase transitions at nonzero temperature, but nonetheless exhibit ergodicity-breaking dynamical transitions: below a critical nonzero temperature, the mixing time of local Gibbs sampling diverges in the thermodynamic limit. Slow Gibbs sampling of such codes enables fault-tolerant passive quantum error correction using finite-depth circuits. We apply "hydrodynamic" effective field theory techniques to an ersatz Fermi liquid. Our effective theory, which captures the correlation functions of density operators at each angle on the Fermi surface, can only deviate from conventional Fermi liquid behavior if the effective theory is non-local. Neglecting non-local effects, the ersatz Fermi liquid's effective action is the Legendre transform of the effective action for Fermi liquids, based on the coadjoint orbit method, up to irrelevant corrections., Comment: 11 pages

We bound the time necessary to implement the shift unitary on a one-dimensional ring, both using local Hamiltonians and those with power-law interactions. This time is constrained by the Frobenius light cone; hence we prove that (for certain power law exponents) shift unitaries cannot be implemented in the same amount of time needed to prepare long-range Bell pairs. The quantum mechanics of superconducting circuits is derived by starting from a classical Hamiltonian dynamical system describing a dissipationless circuit, usually made of capacitive and inductive elements. However, standard approaches to circuit quantization treat fluxes and charges, which end up as the canonically conjugate degrees of freedom on phase space, asymmetrically. By combining intuition from topological graph theory with a recent symplectic geometry approach to circuit quantization, we present a theory of circuit quantization that treats charges and fluxes on a manifestly symmetric footing. For planar circuits, known circuit dualities are a natural canonical transformation on the classical phase space. The past decade has witnessed the development of systematic effective theories for dissipative thermal systems. Here, we describe an analogous effective theory framework that applies to the classical stochastic dynamics of nonequilibrium systems. We illustrate this approach using a range of examples, including nonreciprocal (predator-prey) dynamics, dissipative and driven rigid-body motion, and active chiral fluids and solids. Many of these systems exhibit a generalized time-reversal symmetry, which plays a crucial role within our formalism, and in many cases can be implemented within the Martin-Siggia-Rose path integral. This effective theory formalism yields generalizations of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem and second law of thermodynamics valid out of equilibrium. By stipulating a stationary distribution and a set of symmetries -- rather than postulating the stochastic equations of motion directly -- this formalism provides an alternative route to building phenomenological models of driven and active matter. We hope that this approach facilitates a systematic investigation of the universality classes of active matter, and provides a common language for nonequilibrium many-body physics from high energy to condensed matter., Comment: 74 pages, 6 figures

We discuss the generic slowing down of quantum dynamics in low energy density states of spatially local Hamiltonians. Beginning with quantum walks of a single particle, we prove that for certain classes of Hamiltonians (deformations of lattice-regularized $H\propto p^{2k}$), the ``butterfly velocity" of particle motion at low energies has an upper bound that must scale as $E^{(2k-1)/2k}$, as expected from dimensional analysis. We generalize these results to obtain bounds on the typical velocities of particles in many-body systems with repulsive interactions, where for certain families of Hubbard-like models we obtain similar scaling., Comment: 12 pages, 0 figures

We build a minimal model of dissipative vortex dynamics in two spatial dimensions, subject to a kinematic constraint: dipole conservation. The additional conservation law implies anomalously slow decay rates for vortices. We argue that this model of vortex dynamics is relevant for a broad range of time scales during a quench into a uniaxial charge density wave state. Our predictions are consistent with recent experiments on uniaxial charge density wave formation in $\mathrm{LaTe}_3$.

The surface code is a quantum error-correcting code for one logical qubit, protected by spatially localized parity checks in two dimensions. Due to fundamental constraints from spatial locality, storing more logical qubits requires either sacrificing the robustness of the surface code against errors or increasing the number of physical qubits. We bound the minimal number of spatially nonlocal parity checks necessary to add logical qubits to a surface code while maintaining, or improving, robustness to errors. We saturate the lower limit of this bound, when the number of added logical qubits is a constant, using a family of hypergraph product codes, interpolating between the surface code and constant-rate low-density parity-check codes. Fault-tolerant protocols for logical gates in the quantum code can be inherited from its classical parent codes. We provide near-term practical implementations of this code for hardware based on trapped ions or neutral atoms in mobile optical tweezers. We show that it is possible to perform Heisenberg-limited metrology on GHZ-like states, in the presence of generic spatially local, possibly strong interactions during the measurement process. An explicit protocol, which relies on single-qubit measurements and feedback based on polynomial-time classical computation, achieves the Heisenberg limit. In one dimension, matrix product state methods can be used to perform this classical calculation, while in higher dimensions the cluster expansion underlies the efficient calculations. Using holographic duality, we present an analytically controlled theory of quantum critical points without quasiparticles, at finite disorder and finite charge density. These fixed points are obtained by perturbing a disorder-free quantum critical point with relevant disorder whose operator dimension is perturbatively close to Harris marginal. We analyze these fixed points both using field theoretic arguments, and by solving the bulk equations of motion in holography. We calculate the critical exponents of the IR theory, together with thermoelectric transport coefficients. Our predictions for the critical exponents of the disordered fixed point are consistent with previous work, both in holographic and nonholograpic models., Comment: 5+14 pages

The computational complexity of simulating quantum many-body systems generally scales exponentially with the number of particles. This enormous computational cost prohibits first principles simulations of many important problems throughout science, ranging from simulating quantum chemistry to discovering the thermodynamic phase diagram of quantum materials or high-density neutron stars. We present a classical algorithm that samples from a high-temperature quantum Gibbs state in a computational (product state) basis. The runtime grows polynomially with the number of particles, while error vanishes polynomially. This algorithm provides an alternative strategy to existing quantum Monte Carlo methods for overcoming the sign problem. Our result implies that measurement-based quantum computation on a Gibbs state can provide exponential speed up only at sufficiently low temperature, and further constrains what tasks can be exponentially faster on quantum computers., Comment: 4+4 pages; 0+1 figure

Circuit quantization is an extraordinarily successful theory that describes the behavior of quantum circuits with high precision. The most widely used approach of circuit quantization relies on introducing a classical Lagrangian whose degrees of freedom are either magnetic fluxes or electric charges in the circuit. By combining nonlinear circuit elements (such as Josephson junctions or quantum phase slips), it is possible to build circuits where a standard Lagrangian description (and thus the standard quantization method) does not exist. Inspired by the mathematics of symplectic geometry and graph theory, we address this challenge, and present a Hamiltonian formulation of non-dissipative electrodynamic circuits. The resulting procedure for circuit quantization is independent of whether circuit elements are linear or nonlinear, or if the circuit is driven by external biases. We explain how to re-derive known results from our formalism, and provide an efficient algorithm for quantizing circuits, including those that cannot be quantized using existing methods., Comment: 30 pages, 8 figures

We examine the hydrodynamics of systems with spontaneously broken multipolar symmetries using a systematic effective field theory. We focus on the simplest non-trivial setting: a system with charge and dipole symmetry, but without momentum conservation. When no symmetries are broken, our formalism reproduces the quartic subdiffusion ($\omega \sim -i k^4$) characteristic of `fracton hydrodynamics' with conserved dipole moment. Our formalism also captures spontaneous breaking of charge and/or dipole symmetry. When charge symmetry is spontaneously broken, the hydrodynamic modes are quadratically propagating and quartically relaxing ($\omega \sim \pm k^2 - ik^4$). When the dipole symmetry is spontaneously broken but the charge symmetry is preserved, then we find quadratically relaxing (diffusive) transverse modes, plus another mode which depending on parameters may be either purely diffusive ($\omega \sim -i k^2$) or quadratically propagating and quadratically relaxing ($\omega \sim \pm k^2 -i k^2$). We review the mathematical speed limits on quantum information processing in many-body systems. After the proof of the Lieb-Robinson Theorem in 1972, the past two decades have seen substantial developments in its application to other questions, such as the simulatability of quantum systems on classical or quantum computers, the generation of entanglement, and even the properties of ground states of gapped systems. Moreover, Lieb-Robinson bounds have been extended in non-trivial ways, to demonstrate speed limits in systems with power-law interactions or interacting bosons, and even to prove notions of locality that arise in cartoon models for quantum gravity with all-to-all interactions. We overview the progress which has occurred, highlight the most promising results and techniques, and discuss some central outstanding questions which remain open. We develop a Schwinger-Keldysh effective field theory describing the hydrodynamics of a fluid with conserved charge and dipole moments, together with conserved momentum. The resulting hydrodynamic modes are highly unusual, including sound waves with quadratic (magnon-like) dispersion relation and subdiffusive decay rate. Hydrodynamics itself is unstable below four spatial dimensions. We show that the momentum density is, at leading order, the Goldstone boson for a dipole symmetry which appears spontaneously broken at finite charge density. Unlike an ordinary fluid, the presence or absence of energy conservation qualitatively changes the decay rates of the hydrodynamic modes. We prove that prethermalization is a generic property of gapped local many-body quantum systems, subjected to small perturbations, in any spatial dimension. More precisely, let $H_0$ be a Hamiltonian, spatially local in $d$ spatial dimensions, with a gap $\Delta$ in the many-body spectrum; let $V$ be a spatially local Hamiltonian consisting of a sum of local terms, each of which is bounded by $\epsilon \ll \Delta$. Then, the approximation that quantum dynamics is restricted to the low-energy subspace of $H_0$ is accurate, in the correlation functions of local operators, for stretched exponential time scale $\tau \sim \exp[(\Delta/\epsilon)^a]$ for any $a<1/(2d-1)$. This result does not depend on whether the perturbation closes the gap. It significantly extends previous rigorous results on prethermalization in models where $H_0$ was frustration-free. We present a theory of hydrodynamics for a vector U(1) charge in 2+1 dimensions, whose rotational symmetry is broken to the point group of an equilateral triangle. We show that it is possible for this U(1) to have a chiral anomaly. The hydrodynamic consequence of this anomaly is the introduction of a ballistic contribution to the dispersion relation for the hydrodynamic modes. We simulate classical Markov chains and find compelling numerical evidence for the anomalous hydrodynamic universality class. Generalizations of our theory to other symmetry groups are also discussed.

We present the hydrodynamics of fluids in three spatial dimensions with helical symmetry, wherein only a linear combination of a rotation and translation is conserved in one of the three directions. The hydrodynamic degrees of freedom consist of scalar densities (e.g. energy or charge) along with two velocity fields transverse to the helical axis when the corresponding momenta are conserved. Nondissipative hydrodynamic coefficients reminiscent of chiral vortical coefficients arise. We write down microscopic Hamiltonian dynamical systems exhibiting helical symmetry, and we demonstrate using kinetic theory that these systems will generically exhibit the new helical phenomena that we predicted within hydrodynamics. We also confirm our findings using modern effective field theory techniques for hydrodynamics. We postulate regimes where pinned cholesteric liquid crystals may possess transport coefficients of a helical fluid, which appear to have been overlooked in previous literature., Comment: 24 pages, 1 figure

The speed of light $c$ sets a strict upper bound on the speed of information transfer in both classical and quantum systems. In nonrelativistic quantum systems, the Lieb-Robinson Theorem imposes an emergent speed limit $v \hspace{-0.2mm} \ll \hspace{-0.2mm} c$, establishing locality under unitary evolution and constraining the time needed to perform useful quantum tasks. We extend the Lieb-Robinson Theorem to quantum dynamics with measurements. In contrast to the expectation that measurements can arbitrarily violate spatial locality, we find at most an $(M \hspace{-0.5mm} +\hspace{-0.5mm} 1)$-fold enhancement to the speed $v$ of quantum information, provided the outcomes of measurements in $M$ local regions are known. This holds even when classical communication is instantaneous, and extends beyond projective measurements to weak measurements and other nonunitary channels. Our bound is asymptotically optimal, and saturated by existing measurement-based protocols. We tightly constrain the resource requirements for quantum computation, error correction, teleportation, and generating entangled resource states (Bell, GHZ, quantum-critical, Dicke, W, and spin-squeezed states) from short-range-entangled initial states. We describe a simple quantum error correcting code built out of a time-dependent transverse field Ising model. The code is similar to a repetition code, but has two advantages: an $N$-qubit code can be implemented with a finite-depth spatially local unitary circuit, and it can subsequently protect against both $X$ and $Z$ errors if $N\ge 10$ is even. We propose an implementation of this code with 10 ultracold Rydberg atoms in optical tweezers, along with further generalizations of the code., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures

We extend recent work on hydrodynamics with global multipolar symmetries -- known as "fracton hydrodynamics" -- to systems in which the multipolar symmetries are gauged. We refer to the latter as "fracton magnetohydrodynamics", in analogy to conventional magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), which governs systems with gauged charge conservation. We show that fracton MHD arises naturally from higher-rank Maxwell's equations and in systems with one-form symmetries obeying certain constraints; while we focus on "minimal" higher-rank generalizations of MHD that realize diffusion, our methods may also be used to identify other, more exotic hydrodynamic theories (e.g., with magnetic subdiffusion). In contrast to semi-microscopic derivations of MHD, our approach elucidates the origin of the hydrodynamic modes by identifying the corresponding higher-form symmetries. Spatially resolved transport in two-dimensional quantum materials can reveal dynamics which is invisible in conventional bulk transport measurements. We predict striking patterns in spatially inhomogeneous transport just above the critical temperature in two-dimensional superconducting thin films, where electrical current will appear to flow as if it were a viscous fluid obeying the Navier-Stokes equations. Compared to viscous electron fluids in ultrapure metals such as graphene, this analogue viscous vortex fluid can exhibit a far more tunable crossover, as a function of temperature, from Ohmic to non-Ohmic transport, with the latter arising on increasingly large length scales close to the critical temperature. We present an effective field theory for the nonlinear fluctuating hydrodynamics of a single conserved charge with or without time-reversal symmetry, based on the Martin-Siggia-Rose formalism. Applying this formalism to fluids with only charge and multipole conservation, and with broken time-reversal symmetry, we predict infinitely many new dynamical universality classes, including some with arbitrarily large upper critical dimensions. Network effects are the added value derived solely from the popularity of a product in an economic market. Using agent-based models inspired by statistical physics, we propose a minimal theory of a competitive market for (nearly) indistinguishable goods with demand-side network effects, sold by statistically identical sellers. With weak network effects, the model reproduces conventional microeconomics: there is a statistical steady state of (nearly) perfect competition. Increasing network effects, we find a phase transition to a robust non-equilibrium phase driven by the spontaneous formation and collapse of fads in the market. When sellers update prices sufficiently quickly, an emergent monopolist can capture the market and undercut competition, leading to a symmetry- and ergodicity-breaking transition. When continuous rotational invariance of a two-dimensional fluid is broken to the discrete, dihedral subgroup $D_6$ - the point group of an equilateral triangle - the resulting anisotropic hydrodynamics breaks both spatial-inversion and time-reversal symmetries, while preserving their combination. In this work, we present the hydrodynamics of such $D_6$ fluids, identifying new symmetry-allowed dissipative terms in the hydrodynamic equations of motion. We propose two experiments - both involving high-purity solid-state materials with $D_6$-invariant Fermi surfaces - that are sensitive to these new coefficients in a $D_6$ fluid of electrons. We develop a hydrodynamic effective field theory on the Schwinger-Keldysh contour for fluids with charge, energy, and momentum conservation, but only discrete rotational symmetry. The consequences of anisotropy on thermodynamics and first-order dissipative hydrodynamics are detailed in some simple examples in two spatial dimensions, but our construction extends to any spatial dimension and any rotation group (discrete or continuous). We construct infinite families of new universality classes of fracton hydrodynamics with momentum conservation, both with multipole conservation laws and/or subsystem symmetry. We explore the effects of broken inversion and/or time-reversal symmetry at the ideal fluid level, along with momentum relaxation. In the case of one-dimensional multipole-conserving models, we write down explicit microscopic Hamiltonian systems realizing these new universality classes. All of these hydrodynamic universality classes exhibit instabilities and will flow to new non-equilibrium fixed points. We develop a renormalization group for weak Harris-marginal disorder in otherwise strongly interacting quantum critical theories, focusing on systems which have emergent conformal invariance. Using conformal perturbation theory, we argue that previously proposed random lines of fixed points with Lifshitz scaling in fact flow towards other universal fixed points, and this flow is captured by a "one-loop" analysis. Our approach appears best controlled in theories with only a few operators with low scaling dimension. We show that the simplest universality classes of fracton hydrodynamics in more than one spatial dimension, including isotropic theories of charge and dipole conservation, can exhibit hidden "quasiconservation laws", in which certain higher multipole moments can only decay due to dangerously irrelevant corrections to hydrodynamics. We present two simple examples of this phenomenon. Firstly, an isotropic dipole-conserving fluid in the infinite plane conserves an infinite number of "harmonic multipole charges" within linear response; we calculate the decay or growth of these charges due to dangerously irrelevant nonlinearities. Secondly, we consider a model with $xy$ and $x^2-y^2$ quadrupole conservation, in addition to dipole conservation, which is described by isotropic fourth-order subdiffusion, yet has dangerously irrelevant sixth-order corrections necessary to relax the harmonic multipole charges. We show that in anisotropic Fermi liquids where momentum-conserving scattering is much faster than momentum-relaxing scattering processes, local imaging of the electric current flow patterns can cleanly distinguish between ballistic, viscous and ohmic flow patterns simultaneously (using a single image). We propose using multi-layer graphene-based heterostructures, including ABA trilayer graphene, as a natural experimental platform where an anisotropic ballistic-to-viscous crossover may be visible in near-term experiments. We prove that quantum information propagates with a finite velocity in any model of interacting bosons whose (possibly time-dependent) Hamiltonian contains spatially local single-boson hopping terms along with arbitrary local density-dependent interactions. More precisely, with density matrix $\rho \propto \exp[-\mu N]$ (with $N$ the total boson number), ensemble averaged correlators of the form $\langle [A_0,B_r(t)]\rangle $, along with out-of-time-ordered correlators, must vanish as the distance $r$ between two local operators grows, unless $t \ge r/v$ for some finite speed $v$. In one dimensional models, we give a useful extension of this result that demonstrates the smallness of all matrix elements of the commutator $[A_0,B_r(t)]$ between finite density states if $t/r$ is sufficiently small. Our bounds are relevant for physically realistic initial conditions in experimentally realized models of interacting bosons. In particular, we prove that $v$ can scale no faster than linear in number density in the Bose-Hubbard model: this scaling matches previous results in the high density limit. We present the nonlinear fluctuating hydrodynamics which governs the late time dynamics of a chaotic many-body system with simultaneous charge/mass, dipole/center of mass, and momentum conservation. This hydrodynamic effective theory is unstable below four spatial dimensions: dipole-conserving fluids at rest become unstable to fluctuations, and are governed not by hydrodynamics, but by a fractonic generalization of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class. In many-body quantum systems with spatially local interactions, quantum information propagates with a finite velocity, reminiscent of the ``light cone" of relativity. In systems with long-range interactions which decay with distance $r$ as $1/r^\alpha$, however, there are multiple light cones which control different information theoretic tasks. We show an optimal (up to logarithms) ``Frobenius light cone" obeying $t\sim r^{\min(\alpha-1,1)}$ for $\alpha>1$ in one-dimensional power-law interacting systems with finite local dimension: this controls, among other physical properties, the butterfly velocity characterizing many-body chaos and operator growth. We construct an explicit random Hamiltonian protocol that saturates the bound and settles the optimal Frobenius light cone in one dimension. Understanding electrical transport in strange metals, including the seeming universality of Planckian $T$-linear resistivity, remains a longstanding challenge in condensed matter physics. We propose that local imaging techniques, such as nitrogen vacancy center magnetometry, can locally identify signatures of quantum critical response which are invisible in measurements of a bulk electrical resistivity. As an illustrative example, we use a minimal holographic model for a strange metal in two spatial dimensions to predict how electrical current will flow in regimes dominated by quantum critical dynamics on the Planckian length scale. We describe the crossover between quantum critical transport and hydrodynamic transport (including Ohmic regimes), both in charge neutral and finite density systems. We compare our holographic predictions to experiments on charge neutral graphene, finding quantitative agreement with available data; we suggest further experiments which may determine the relevance of our framework to transport on Planckian scales in this material. The Lieb-Robinson theorem states that information propagates with a finite velocity in quantum systems on a lattice with nearest-neighbor interactions. What are the speed limits on information propagation in quantum systems with power-law interactions, which decay as $1/r^\alpha$ at distance $r$? Here, we present a definitive answer to this question for all exponents $\alpha>2d$ and all spatial dimensions $d$. Schematically, information takes time at least $r^{\min\{1, \alpha-2d\}}$ to propagate a distance~$r$. As recent state transfer protocols saturate this bound, our work closes a decades-long hunt for optimal Lieb-Robinson bounds on quantum information dynamics with power-law interactions.

When electrons flow as a viscous fluid in anisotropic metals, the reduced symmetry can lead to exotic viscosity tensors with many additional, nonstandard components. We present a viscometry technique that can, in principle, measure the multiple dissipative viscosities allowed in isotropic and anisotropic fluids alike. By applying representation theory to exploit the intrinsic symmetry of the fluid, our viscometry is also exceptionally robust to both boundary complications and ballistic effects. We present the technique via the illustrative example of dihedral symmetry, relevant in this context as the point symmetry of 2D crystals. Finally, we propose a present-day realizable experiment for detecting, in a metal, a novel hydrodynamic phenomenon: the presence of rotational dissipation in an otherwise isotropic fluid.

We present a framework for understanding the dynamics of operator size, and bounding the growth of out-of-time-ordered correlators, in models of large-$S$ spins. Focusing on the dynamics of a single spin, we show the finiteness of the Lyapunov exponent in the large-$S$ limit; our bounds are tighter than the best known Lieb-Robinson-type bounds on these systems. We numerically find our upper bound on Lyapunov exponents is within an order of magnitude of numerically computed values in classical and quantum kicked top models. Generalizing our results to coupled large-$S$ spins on lattices, we show that the butterfly velocity, which characterizes the spatial speed of quantum information scrambling, is finite as $S\rightarrow\infty$. We present an optimal protocol for encoding an unknown qubit state into a multiqubit Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger-like state and, consequently, transferring quantum information in large systems exhibiting power-law ($1/r^\alpha$) interactions. For all power-law exponents $\alpha$ between $d$ and $2d+1$, where $d$ is the dimension of the system, the protocol yields a polynomial speedup for $\alpha>2d$ and a superpolynomial speedup for $\alpha\leq 2d$, compared to the state of the art. For all $\alpha>d$, the protocol saturates the Lieb-Robinson bounds (up to subpolynomial corrections), thereby establishing the optimality of the protocol and the tightness of the bounds in this regime. The protocol has a wide range of applications, including in quantum sensing, quantum computing, and preparation of topologically ordered states. We study the entanglement dynamics in a generic quantum automaton circuit subjected to projective measurements. We design an efficient algorithm which not only allows us to perform large scale simulation for the R\'enyi entropy but also provides a physical picture for the entanglement dynamics, which can be interpreted in terms of a classical bit-string model which belongs to the directed percolation universality class. We study the purification dynamics of a state formed by EPR pairs, and the growth of entanglement starting from a product state. We develop the theory of hydrodynamics of an isotropic Fermi liquid of electrons coupled to isotropic acoustic phonons, assuming that umklapp processes may be neglected. At low temperatures, the fluid is approximately Galilean invariant; at high temperatures, the fluid is nearly relativistic; at intermediate temperatures, there are seven additional temperature regimes with unconventional thermodynamic properties and hydrodynamic transport coefficients in a three-dimensional system. We predict qualitative signatures of electron-phonon fluids in incoherent transport coefficients, shear and Hall viscosity, and plasmon dispersion relations.
