We investigate order parameter fluctuations in the Hubbard model within a time-dependent Gutzwiller approach. While in the weak coupling limit we find that the amplitude fluctuations are short-lived due to a degeneracy with the energy of the edge of the quasiparticle continua (and in agreement with Hartree-Fock + RPA theory), these are shifted below the edge upon increasing the interaction. Our calculations therefore predict undamped amplitude (Higgs) oscillations of the order parameter in strongly coupled superconductors, cold atomic fermion condensates and in strongly interacting charge- and spin-density wave systems. We propose an experimental realization for the detection of the spin-type Higgs mode in undoped cuprates and related materials where, due to the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction, it can couple to an out-of plane ferromagnetic excitation which is visible via the Faraday effect., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

High-temperature solid-state reaction between orthorhombic AgF2 and monoclinic CuF2 (y = 0.15, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5) in a fluorine atmosphere resulted in coexisting solid solutions of Cu-poor orthorhombic and Cu-rich monoclinic phases with stoichiometry Ag1-xCuxF2. Based on X-ray powder diffraction analyses, the mutual solubility in the orthorhombic phase (AgF2 doped with Cu) appears to be at an upper limit of Cu concentration of 30 mol % (Ag0.7Cu0.3F2), while the monoclinic phase (CuF2 doped with Ag) can form a nearly stoichiometric Cu : Ag = 1 : 1 solid solution (Cu0.56Ag0.44F2), preserving the CuF2 crystal structure. Experimental data and DFT calculations showed that AgF2 doped with Cu and CuF2 doped with Ag solid solutions deviate from the classical Vegards law. Magnetic measurements of Ag1-xCuxF2 showed that the Neel temperature (TN) decreases with increasing Cu content in both phases. Likewise, theoretical DFT+U calculations for Ag1-xCuxF2 showed that the progressive substitution of Ag by Cu decreases the magnetic interaction strength (J2D) in both structures. Electrical conductivity measurements of Ag0.85Cu0.15F2 showed a ca. 2-fold increase in specific ionic conductivity (3.71 x 10-13 plus/minus 2.6 x 10-15 S/cm) as compared to pure AgF2 (1.85 x 10-13 plus/minus 1.2 x 10-15 S/cm), indicating the formation of a vacancy- or F adatom-free metal difluoride sample., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, 1 Table, and electronic supplement of 14 pages

We investigate the physics of an adiabatic transition from a BCS superconductor to a Fermi liquid for an exponentially slow decreasing pairing interaction. In particular, we show that the metal keeps memory of the parent BCS state so it is possible to reverse the dynamics and go back to the original state similarly to a spin/photon echo experiment. Moreover, we study the evolution of the order parameter phase phi in transforming the BCS superconductor to a conventional metal. Since the global phase is the conjugate variable of the density we explicitly show how to use the dynamics of phi together with gauge invariance to build up the non-interacting chemical potential away from particle-hole symmetry. We further analyze the role of phi in restoring the gauge invariant current response when the non-interacting Fermi liquid is approached starting from a BCS superconductor in the presence of an external vector field., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures

Using density functional theory, we study the lattice dynamical properties of magnetite (Fe$_3$O$_4$) in the high-temperature cubic and low-temperature monoclinic phases. The calculated phonon dispersion curves and phonon density of states are compared with the available experimental data obtained by inelastic neutron, inelastic x-ray, and nuclear inelastic scattering. We find a very good agreement between the theoretical and experimental results for the monoclinic $Cc$ structure revealing the strong coupling between charge-orbital (trimeron) order and specific phonon modes. For the cubic phase, clear discrepancies arise which, remarkably, can be understood assuming that the strong trimeron-phonon coupling can be extended above the Verwey transition, with lattice dynamics influenced by the short-range trimeron order instead of the average cubic structure. Our results establish the validity of trimerons (and trimeron-phonon coupling) in explaining the physics of magnetite much beyond their original formulation., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, 1 table

We investigate the quench dynamics of strongly coupled superconductors within the time-dependent Gutzwiller approximation from the BCS to the BEC regime and evaluate the out-of-equilibrium transient spectral density and optical conductivity relevant for pump probe experiments. Fourier transformation of the order parameter dynamics reveals a frequency $\Omega_J$ which, as in the BCS case, is controlled by the spectral gap. However, we find a crossover from the BCS dynamics to a new strong coupling regime where a characteristic frequency $\Omega_U$, associated to double occupancy fluctuations controls the order parameter dynamics. The change of regime occurs close to a dynamical phase transition. Both, $\Omega_J$ and $\Omega_U$ give rise to a complex structure of self-driven slow Rabi oscillations which are visible in the non-equilibrium optical conductivity where also side bands appear due to the modulation of the double occupancy by superconducting amplitude oscillations. From systematic analysis of the high pulsed magnetic field resistance data of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_{4}$ thin films, we extract an experimental phase diagram for several doping values ranging from the very underdoped to the very overdoped regimes. Our analysis highlights a competition between charge density waves and superconductivity which is ubiquitous between $x=0.08$ and $x=0.19$ and produces the previously observed double step transition. When suppressed by a strong magnetic field, superconductivity is resilient for two specific doping ranges centered around respectively $x\approx 0.09$ and $x\approx 0.19$ and the characteristic temperature for the onset of the competing charge density wave phase is found to vanish above $x = 0.19$. At $x=1/8$ the two phases are found to coexist exactly at zero magnetic field., Comment: 13 figures. Changes from previous version are in red. Although charge density waves (CDWs) are omnipresent in cuprate high-temperature superconductors, they occur at significantly different wavevectors, confounding efforts to understand their formation mechanism. Here, we use resonant inelastic x-ray scattering to investigate the doping- and temperature-dependent CDW evolution in La2-xBaxCuO4 (x=0.115-0.155). We discovered that the CDW develops in two stages with decreasing temperature. A precursor CDW with quasi-commensurate wavevector emerges first at high-temperature. This doping-independent precursor CDW correlation originates from the CDW phase mode coupled with a phonon and "seeds" the low-temperature CDW with strongly doping dependent wavevector. Our observation reveals the precursor CDW and its phase mode as the building blocks of the highly intertwined electronic ground state in the cuprates., Comment: In press at Physical Review X; 11 pages, 6 figures

Solid 4He may acquire superfluid characteristics due to the frustration of the solid phase at grain boundaries. Here, we show that an analogous effect occurs in systems with competition among charge-density-waves (CDWs) and superconductivity in the presence of disorder, as cuprate or dichalcogenide superconductors. The CDWs breaks apart in domains with topologically protected filamentary superconductivity (FSC) at the interfaces. Transport experiments carried out in underdoped cuprates with the magnetic field acting as a control parameter are shown to be in excellent agreement with the theoretical expectation. At high temperature and low fields we find a transition from CDWs to fluctuating superconductivity, weakly affected by disorder, while at high field and low temperature the protected filamentary superconducting phase appears in close analogy with "glassy" supersolid phenomena in 4He.

Although all superconducting cuprates display charge-ordering tendencies, their low-temperature properties are distinct, impeding efforts to understand the phenomena within a single conceptual framework. While some systems exhibit stripes of charge and spin, with a locked periodicity, others host charge density waves (CDWs) without any obviously related spin order. Here we use resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) to follow the evolution of charge correlations in the canonical stripe ordered cuprate La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_{4}$ (LBCO~$1/8$) across its ordering transition. We find that high-temperature charge correlations are unlocked from the wavevector of the spin correlations, signaling analogies to CDW phases in various other cuprates. This indicates that stripe order at low temperatures is stabilized by the coupling of otherwise independent charge and spin density waves, with important implications for the relation between charge and spin correlations in the cuprates., Comment: Accepted in Proceeding of the National Academy of Sciences; 8 pages, 4 figures

The Raman spectrum of Ba2CuGe2O7, a tetragonal insulator which develops Dzyaloshinsky- Moriya helical magnetism below TN = 3.2 K, has been detected at temperatures varying from 300 to 80 K in a single crystal, with the radiation polarized either in the ab plane or along the c axis of its tetragonal cell. 29 phonon lines out of the 35 allowed by the Raman selection rules for the present geometry were observed, and their vibrational frequencies were found in overall good agreement with those provided by shell-model calculations. Together with the previous report on the infrared-active phonons [A. Nucara et al., Phys. Rev. B 90, 014304 (2014)] the present study provides an exhaustive description, both experimental and theoretical, of the lattice dynamics in Ba2CuGe2O7.

Empirical evidence in heavy fermion, pnictide, and other systems suggests that unconventional superconductivity appears associated to some form of real-space electronic order. For the cuprates, despite several proposals, the emergence of order in the phase diagram between the commensurate antiferromagnetic state and the superconducting state is not well understood. Here we show that in this regime doped holes assemble in "electronic polymers." Within a Monte Carlo study we find, that in clean systems by lowering the temperature the polymer melt condenses first in a smectic state and then in a Wigner crystal both with the addition of inversion symmetry breaking. Disorder blurs the positional order leaving a robust inversion symmetry breaking and a nematic order, accompanied by vector chiral spin order and with the persistence of a thermodynamic transition. Such electronic phases, whose properties are reminiscent of soft-matter physics, produce charge and spin responses in good accord with experiments., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures plus supplementary information

We investigate the disorder dependence of the static density, amplitude and current correlations within the attractive Hubbard model supplemented with on-site disorder. It is found that strong disorder favors a decoupling of density and amplitude correlations due to the formation of superconducting islands. This emergent granularity also induces an enhancement of the density correlations on the SC islands whereas amplitude fluctuations are most pronounced in the 'insulating' regions. While density and amplitude correlations are short-ranged at strong disorder we show that current correlations have a long-range tail due to the formation of percolative current paths in agreement with the constant behavior expected from the analysis of one-dimensional models., Comment: 17 pages, 19 figures; revised discussion and conclusions section; accepted for Physical Review B

Besides significant electronic correlations, high-temperature superconductors also show a strong coupling of electrons to a number of lattice modes. Combined with the experimental detection of electronic inhomogeneities and ordering phenomena in many high-T_c compounds, these features raise the question as to what extent phonons are involved in the associated instabilities. Here we address this problem based on the Hubbard model including a coupling to phonons in order to capture several salient features of the phase diagram of hole-doped cuprates. Charge degrees of freedom, which are suppressed by the large Hubbard U near half-filling, are found to become active at a fairly low doping level. We find that possible charge order is mainly driven by Fermi surface nesting, with competition between a near-(pi,pi) order at low doping and antinodal nesting at higher doping, very similar to the momentum structure of magnetic fluctuations. The lattice dynamics of Ba$_2$CuGe$_2$O$_7$, a compound which develops Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya (DM) helical magnetism below $T_N$ = 3.2 K, has been studied by measuring the infrared reflectivity of a single crystal with the radiation polarized both in the $ab$ plane and along the $c$ axis of its tetragonal cell, from 7 K to 300 K. In this compound, where the unit cell has no inversion symmetry, fourteen $E$ phonon modes of the $ab$ plane, out of the eighteen predicted, and all the ten $B_2$ modes of the $c$ axis, have been observed. They have been assigned to the atomic motions by a comparison with shell-model calculations, which provided vibrational frequencies in good agreement with the experiment, while most calculated intensities turned to be much lower than the experimental values. This discrepancy has been tentatively explained by assuming strong electron-phonon interactions, a hypothesis supported by the failure of the $f$- sum rule if restricted to the phonon region. Indeed, we observe a remarkable increase in the oscillator strengths at $T$'s low but higher than $T_N$, which suggests that the dielectric constant of Ba$_2$CuGe$_2$O$_7$ may increase at those temperatures., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures, 4 tables

The high Curie temperature multiferroic compound, CuO, has a quasidegenerate magnetic ground state that makes it prone to manipulation by the so called ``order-by-disorder'' mechanism. First principle computations supplemented with Monte Carlo simulations and experiments show that isovalent doping allows to stabilize the multiferroic phase in non-ferroelectric regions of the pristine material phase-diagram with experiments reaching a 250% widening of the ferroelectric temperature window with 5% of Zn doping. Our results allow to validate the importance of a quasidegenerate ground state on promoting multiferroicity on CuO at high temperatures and open a path to the material engineering of new multiferroic materials., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

According to the Goldstone theorem the breaking of a continuous U(1) symmetry comes along with the existence of low-energy collective modes. In the context of superconductivity these excitations are related to the phase of the superconducting (SC) order parameter and for clean systems are optically inactive. Here we show that for strongly disordered superconductors phase modes acquire a dipole moment and appear as a subgap spectral feature in the optical conductivity. This finding is obtained with both a gauge-invariant random-phase approximation scheme based on a fermionic Bogoliubov-de Gennes state as well as with a prototypical bosonic model for disordered superconductors. In the strongly disordered regime, where the system displays an effective granularity of the SC properties, the optically active dipoles are linked to the isolated SC islands, offering a new perspective for realizing microwave optical devices.

We measure the electrical resistance of o-TaS3 between 1K and 300K under pressures up to 20GPa. We observe a gradual decrease of the charge density wave transition temperature with increasing pressure P following a mean-field quantum fluctuation power law with a quantum critical point at a pressure Pc = 11.5GPa. Around the quantum critical point we observe a superconducting dome with a maximum superconducting transition temperature Tc = 3.1K. Such dome is similar to superconducting domes around other types of order suggesting that the QCP is directly responsible for the enhancement of superconductivity through a universal mechanism still not well understood., Comment: To be published in PRB as a Rapid Communication. 11 pages with 4 figures

Within a Lagrangian formalism we derive the time-dependent Gutzwiller approximation for general multi-band Hubbard models. Our approach explicitly incorporates the coupling between time-dependent variational parameters and a time-dependent density matrix from which we obtain dynamical correlation functions in the linear response regime. Our results are illustrated for the one-band model where we show that the interacting system can be mapped to an effective problem of fermionic quasiparticles coupled to "doublon" (double occupancy) bosonic fluctuations. The latter have an energy on the scale of the on-site Hubbard repulsion $U$ in the dilute limit but becomes soft at the Brinkman-Rice transition which is shown to be related to an emerging conservation law of doublon charge and the associated gauge invariance. Coupling with the boson mode produces structure in the charge response and we find that a similar structure appears in dynamical mean-field theory., Comment: 29 pages, 7 figures

We investigate theoretically and experimentally the statistical properties of the inhomogeneous order-parameter distribution (OPD) at the verge of the superconductor-insulator transition (SIT). We find within two prototype fermionic and bosonic models for disordered superconductors that one can identify a universal rescaling of the OPD. By performing scanning-tunneling microscopy experiments in three samples of NbN with increasing disorder we show that such a rescaling describes also with an excellent accuracy the experimental data. We present a model for the combined nematic and `smectic' or stripe-like orders seen in recent scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) experiments in cuprates. We model the stripe order as an electronic charge density wave with associated Peierls distortion -- a `Pomeranchuk wave'. We calculate the magnetic phase diagram of the half-filled t-t'-U Hubbard model as a function of t' and U, within the Gutzwiller approximation RPA (GA+RPA). As U increases, the system first crosses over to one of a wide variety of incommensurate phases, whose origin is clarified in terms of double nesting. We evaluate the stability regime of the incommensurate phases by allowing for symmetry-breaking with regard to the formation of spin spirals, and find a crossover to commensurate phases as U increases and a full gap opens. The results are compared with a variety of other recent calculations, and in general good agreement is found. A general constructive procedure is presented for analyzing magnetic instabilities in two-dimensional materials, in terms of [predominantly] double nesting, and applied to Hartree-Fock HF+RPA and Gutzwiller approximation GA+RPA calculations of the Hubbard model. Applied to the cuprates, it is found that competing magnetic interactions are present only for hole doping, between half filling and the Van Hove singularity. While HF+RPA instabilities are present at all dopings (for sufficiently large Hubbard U), in a Gutzwiller approximation they are restricted to a doping range close to the range of relevance for the physical cuprates. We study a model for low doped cuprates where holes aggregate into oriented stripe segments which have a vortex and an antivortex fixed to the extremes. We argue that due to the interaction between segments a state with macroscopic polarization is stabilized, which we call a ferronematic. This state can be characterized as a charge nematic which, due to the net polarization, breaks inversion symmetry and also exhibits an incommensurate spin modulation. Our calculation can reproduce the doping dependent spin structure factor of lanthanum cuprates in excellent agreement with experiment and allows to rationalize experiments in which the incommensurability has an order parameter-like temperature dependence., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We propose a density functional to find the ground state energy and density of interacting particles, where both the density and the pair density can adjust in the presence of an inhomogeneous potential. As a proof of principle we formulate an a priori exact functional for the inhomogeneous Hubbard model. The functional has the same form as the Gutzwiller approximation but with an unknown kinetic energy reduction factor. An approximation to the functional based on the exact solution of the uniform problem leads to a substantial improvement over the local density approximation.

We present a short account of the present experimental situation of stripes in cuprates followed by a review of our present understanding of their ground state and excited state properties. Collective modes, the dynamical structure factor, and the optical conductivity of stripes are computed using the time-dependent Gutzwiller approximation applied to realistic one band and three band Hubbard models, and are found to be in excellent agreement with experiment. On the other hand, experiments like angle-resolved photoemission and scanning tunneling microscopy show the coexistence of stripes at high energies with Fermi liquid quasiparticles at low energies. We show that a phenomenological model going beyond mean-field can reconcile this dynamic dichotomy., Comment: 20 pages, 14 figures. Dynamical information on spin degrees of freedom of proteins or solids can be obtained by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and Electron Spin Resonance (ESR). A technique with similar versatility for charge degrees of freedom and their ultrafast correlations could move forward the understanding of systems like unconventional superconductors. By perturbing the superconducting state in a high-Tc cuprate using a femtosecond laser pulse, we generate coherent oscillations of the Cooper pair condensate which can be described by an NMR/ESR formalism. The oscillations are detected by transient broad-band reflectivity and found to resonate at the typical scale of Mott physics (2.6 eV), suggesting the existence of a non-retarded contribution to the pairing interaction, as in unconventional (non Migdal-Eliashberg) theories., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the U.S.A. As a prototype of a disordered superconductor we consider the attractive Hubbard model with on-site disorder. We solve the Bogoljubov-de-Gennes equations on two-dimensional finite clusters at zero temperature and evaluate the electromagnetic response to a vector potential. We find that the standard decoupling between transverse and longitudinal response does not apply in the presence of disorder. Moreover the superfluid density is strongly reduced by the relaxation of the phase of the order parameter already at mean-field level when disorder is large. We also find that the anharmonicity of the phase fluctuations is strongly enhanced by disorder. Beyond mean-field, this provides an enhancement of quantum fluctuations inducing a zero-temperature transition to a non-superconducting phase of disordered preformed pairs. Finally, the connection of our findings with the glassy physics for extreme dirty superconductors is discussed., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

We use Monte Carlo simulations and analytical arguments to analyze a frustrated Ising model with nearest neighbour antiferromagnetic coupling $J_1$ and next nearest neighbour coupling $J_2$. The model is inspired on the physics of pnictide superconductors and to some extent we argue that it can be more representative of this physics than the Heisenberg counterpart. Parameters are chosen such that the ground state is a columnar or striped state, as observed experimentally, but is close to the transition to the simple Neel ordered antiferromagnetic state $R = J_2/|J_1|\gtrsim 0.5$. We find that a nematic phase is induced close to $R = 0.5$ by finite size effects and argue that this explains experiments in imperfect samples which find a more robust nematic state as the quality of the sample decreases [A. Jesche et al., Phys. Rev. B 81, 134525 (2010)]. Including the effect of a weak coupling with the lattice we find that a structural transition occurs associated with a nematic phase, with a magnetic transition occurring at a lower temperature. These two transitions merge into a single structural and magnetic transition with a stronger first-order character for larger spin-lattice couplings. These two situations are in agreement with the different phenomenologies found in different families of pnictides., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures

We investigate a model for the CuO_2 plane of high-T_c superconductors where the charge carriers are coupled to A_{1g} and B_{1g} symmetric out-of plane vibrations of the oxygen atoms in the presence of local Hubbard correlations. The coupling is implemented via a modulation of the hopping integral and we calculate the renormalization of vertex and pairing scattering functions based on the time-dependent Gutziller approximation. Contrary to local electron-phonon couplings we find that the transitive coupling can even be enhanced by correlations for certain momenta and symmetries of the vibrations. While this effect may be important for certain properties, we find that, with regard to superconductivity, electron-electron correlations still generically lead to a suppression of the pairing correlations. Our results allow for an estimate of correlation effects on the electron-phonon induced pair scattering from weak electron-electron interactions up to the Mott regime. For onsite repulsions relevant to cuprate superconductors our calculations reveal a significant contribution of B_{1g} phonons to d-wave superconductivity., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures

Based on the extended Hubbard model we calculate the energy of stripe and spiral ground states. We find that uniform spirals get favored by a large $t'/t$ ratio but are unstable at small doping towards stripes and checkerboard textures with spin canting. The structure of these inhomogeneities also depends on t'/t and the associated spin currents may induce a small lattice distortion associated with local dipole moments. We discuss a new kind of stripe which appears as a domain wall of the antiferromagnetic (AF) order parameter with a fractional change of the phase of the AF order. For large |t'/t| spirals can be stabilized under certain conditions in the overdoped regime which may explain the elastic incommensurate magnetic response recently observed in iron-codoped Bi2201 materials., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

We show that a variety of spectral features in high-T_c cuprates can be understood from the coupling of charge carriers to some kind of dynamical order which we exemplify in terms of fluctuating charge and spin density waves. Two theoretical models are investigated which capture different aspects of such dynamical scattering. The first approach leaves the ground state in the disordered phase but couples the electrons to bosonic degrees of freedom, corresponding to the quasi singular scattering associated with the closeness to an ordered phase. The second, more phenomological approach starts from the construction of a frequency dependent order parameter which vanishes for small energies. Both theories capture scanning tunneling microscopy and angle-resoved photoemission experiments which suggest the protection of quasiparticles close to the Fermi energy but the manifestation of long-range order at higher frequencies., Comment: 27 pages, 13 figures, to appear in New J. We determine the nature of the magnetic quantum critical point in the doped LaFeAsO using a set of constrained density functional calculations that provide ab initio coefficients for a Landau order parameter analysis. The system turns out to be remarkably close to a quantum tricritical point, where the nature of the phase transition changes from first to second order. The phonon-mediated attractive interaction between carriers leads to the Cooper pair formation in conventional superconductors. Despite decades of research, the glue holding Cooper pairs in high-temperature superconducting cuprates is still controversial, and the same is true as for the relative involvement of structural and electronic degrees of freedom. Ultrafast electron crystallography (UEC) offers, through observation of spatio-temporally resolved diffraction, the means for determining structural dynamics and the possible role of electron-lattice interaction. A polarized femtosecond (fs) laser pulse excites the charge carriers, which relax through electron-electron and electron-phonon coupling, and the consequential structural distortion is followed diffracting fs electron pulses. In this review, the recent findings obtained on cuprates are summarized. In particular, we discuss the strength and symmetry of the directional electron-phonon coupling in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+\delta (BSCCO), as well as the c-axis structural instability induced by near-infrared pulses in La2CuO4 (LCO). The theoretical implications of these results are discussed with focus on the possibility of charge stripes being significant in accounting for the polarization anisotropy of BSCCO, and cohesion energy (Madelung) calculations being descriptive of the c-axis instability in LCO.

We have obtained mid-infrared optical absorption spectra of the S=1/2 quasi one-dimensional CuO using polarized transmission measurement and interpreted the spectra in terms of phonon assisted magnetic excitations. When the electric field is parallel to the main antiferromagnetic direction a Delta shaped peak is observed with the maximum at 0.23eV which is attributed to spinons along Cu-O chains. At low temperatures in the antiferromagnetic phase another peak appears at 0.16eV which is attributed to two-magnon absorption but the spinon peak remains. This behavior is interpreted as due to a dimensional crossover where the low temperature three-dimensional magnetic phase keeps short range characteristics of a one-dimensional magnet., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Within the time-dependent Gutzwiller approximation (TDGA) applied to Holstein- and SSH-Hubbard models we study the influence of electron correlations on the phonon self-energy. For the local Holstein coupling we find that the phonon frequency renormalization gets weakened upon increasing the onsite interaction $U$ for all momenta. In contrast, correlations can enhance the phonon frequency shift for small wave-vectors in the SSH-Hubbard model. Moreover the TDGA applied to the latter model provides a mechanism which leads to phonon frequency corrections at intermediate momenta due to the coupling with double occupancy fluctuations. Both models display a shift of the nesting-induced to a $q=0$ instability when the onsite interaction becomes sufficiently strong and thus establishing phase separation as a generic phenomenon of strongly correlated electron-phonon coupled systems., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures

Based on the unrestricted Gutzwiller approximation we study the possibility that the diagonal incommensurate spin scattering in the spin glass phase of lanthanum cuprates originates from stripe formation. Similar to the metallic phase two types of diagonal stripe structures appear to be stable: (a) site-centered textures which have one hole per site along the stripe and (b) ferromagnetic stair-case structures which are the diagonal equivalent to bond-centered stripes in the metallic phase and which on average have a filling of 3/4 holes per stripe site. We investigate a model where superconducting electrons are coupled to a frequency dependent charge-density wave (CDW) order parameter Delta(w). Our approach can reconcile the simultaneous existence of low energy Bogoljubov quasiparticles and high energy electronic order as observed in scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) experiments. The theory accounts for the contrast reversal in the STM spectra between positive and negative bias observed above the pairing gap. We derive the phase diagram of a paradigmatic model of Coulomb frustrated phase separation in two-dimensional systems with negative short-range electronic compressibility. We consider the system subject either to the truly three-dimensional long-range Coulomb interaction (LRC) and to a two-dimensional LRC with logarithmic-like behavior. In both cases we find that the transition from the homogeneous phase to the inhomogeneous phase is generically first-order except for a critical point. Close to the critical point, inhomogeneities arrange in a triangular lattice with a subsequent first-order topological transition to stripe-like objects by lowering the Coulomb frustration. A proliferation of inhomogeneities which have inside smaller inhomogeneities is expected near all the transition lines in systems embedded in the three-dimensional LRC alone., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

Based on the time-dependent Gutzwiller approximation we study the possibility that the diagonal incommensurate spin scattering in strongly underdoped lanthanum cuprates originates from antiferromagnetic domain walls (stripes). Calculation of the dynamic spin response for stripes in the diagonal phase yields the characteristic hour glass dispersion with the crossing of low energy Goldstone and high-energy branches at a characteristic energy Ecross at the antiferromagnetic wave-vector Q_{AF}. The high energy part is close to the parent antiferromagnet. We investigate the effect of a dynamical collective mode coupled with quasiparticles at specific wavevectors only. This coupling describes the incipient tendency to order and produces shadow spectral features at high energies, while leaving essentially untouched the low energy quasiparticles. This allows to interpret seemingly contradictory experiments on underdoped cuprates, where many converging evidences indicate the presence of charge (stripe or checkerboard) order, which remains instead elusive in the Fermi surface obtained from angle-resolved photoemission experiments., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures

Using the unrestricted Hartree-Fock approximation and Landau theory we identify possible phases competing with superconductivity in FeAs layers. We find that close to half-filling the transition from the paramagnet to the magnetically ordered phase is first-order making anharmonicities relevant and leading to a rich phase diagram. Between the already known one dimensionally modulated magnetic stripe phase and the paramagnet we find a new phase which has the same structure factor as the former but in which magnetic moments at nearest-neighbor sites are at right angles making electrons to acquire a non trivial phase when circulating a plaquette at strong coupling. We consider the Hubbard-Holstein model in the adiabatic limit to investigate the effects of electron-electron interactions on the electron-phonon coupling. To this aim we compute at any momentum and filling the static charge susceptibility of the Hubbard model within the Gutzwiller approximation and we find that electron-electron correlations effectively screen the electron coupling to the lattice. This screening is more effective at large momenta and, as a consequence, the charge-density wave phase due to the usual Peierls instability of the Fermi surface momenta is replaced by a phase-separation instability when the correlations are sizable., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures

We present a method to compute pairing fluctuations on top of the Gutzwiller approximation (GA). Our investigations are based on a charge-rotational invariant GA energy functional which is expanded up to second order in the pair fluctuations. Equations of motion for the fluctuations lead to a renormalized ladder type approximation. Both spectral functions and corrections to static quantities, like the ground-state energy, are computed. The quality of the method is examined for the single-band Hubbard model where we compare the dynamical pairing correlations for s- and d-wave symmetries with exact diagonalizations and find a significant improvement with respect to analogous calculations done within the standard Hartree-Fock ladder approximation. The technique has potential applications in the theory of Auger spectroscopy, superconductivity, and cold atom physics., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures

Using numerical techniques and asymptotic expansions we obtain the phase diagram of a paradigmatic model of Coulomb frustrated phase separation in systems with negative short-range compressibility. The transition from the homogeneous phase to the inhomogeneous phase is generically first order in isotropic three-dimensional systems except for a critical point. Close to the critical point, inhomogeneities are predicted to form a BCC lattice with subsequent transitions to a triangular lattice of rods and a layered structure. Competition between interactions on different length scales leads to self-organized textures in classical as well as quantum systems. We present a theory of the dynamical two-particle response function in the Hubbard model based on the time-dependent Gutzwiller approximation. The results are in excellent agreement with exact diagonalization on small clusters and give reliable results even for high densities, where the usual ladder approximation breaks down. We apply the theory to the computation of antibound states relevant for Auger spectroscopy and cold atom physics. After 20 years of research the low energy physics of cuprates remains a mystery. It is generally accepted that a three band Hamiltonian with Cu's and O's orbitals should contain the essential physics so we can say that there is consensus at the length scale of the Cu-O distance but there is disagreement when it comes to describe higher length scales or to set up a low energy model. Here we present computations of cuprates which accurately describe the physics arising at scales of up to several lattice constants. We show that the Gutzwiller variational wave function is surprisingly accurate for the computation of magnetic phase boundaries in the infinite dimensional Hubbard model. This allows us to substantially extend known phase diagrams. For both the half-hypercubic and the hypercubic lattice a large part of the phase diagram is occupied by an incommensurate phase, intermediate between the ferromagnetic and the paramagnetic phase. In case of the hypercubic lattice the three phases join at a new quantum Lifshitz point at which the order parameter is critical and the stiffness vanishes., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures
