Abstract

Understanding the mechanisms of magnetoelectric (ME) coupling within multiferroic structures is paramount from a fundamental as well as an applied point of view. We report here that the magnetoelectric properties, as well as the magnetization, of BaTiO$_3$-BiFeO$_3$ superlattices can be tuned by varying the BiFeO$_3$ layer thickness. The magnetoelectric voltage coefficient ($\alpha_{ME}$) reaches its maximum of 60.2 Vcm$^{-1}$Oe$^{-1}$ at 300 K, one of the highest values reported so far, for a sample with a BiFeO$_3$ thickness of 5 nm and a BaTiO$_3$ thickness of 10 nm. To gain deeper insight into the increased magnetoelectric coupling, and both the local and macroscopic magnetic properties, samples with varying BiFeO$_3$ thicknesses have been investigated. Correlations were established between the hyperfine field (HFF), the magnetoelectric voltage coefficient and the magnetization. The possible mechanisms responsible for the strong magnetoelectric coupling are discussed.

12. Effect of annealing on the magnetic properties of zinc ferrite thin films

Abstract

We report on the magnetic properties of zinc ferrite thin film deposited on SrTiO$_3$ single crystal using pulsed laser deposition. X-ray diffraction result indicates the highly oriented single phase growth of the film along with the presence of the strain. In comparison to the bulk antiferromagnetic order, the as-deposited film has been found to exhibit ferrimagnetic ordering with a coercive field of 1140~Oe at 5~K. A broad maximum, at $\approx$105~K, observed in zero-field cooled magnetization curve indicates the wide grain size distribution for the as-deposited film. Reduction in magnetization and blocking temperature has been observed after annealing in both argon as well as oxygen atmospheres, where the variation was found to be dependent on the annealing temperature., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, to be published in Materials Letters

Abstract

Eukaryotic organisms are composed of different cell types with defined shapes and functions. Specific cell types are produced by the process of cell differentiation, which is regulated by signal transduction pathways. Signaling pathways regulate cell differentiation by sensing cues and controlling the expression of target genes whose products generate cell types with specific attributes. In studying how cells differentiate, fungi have proved valuable models because of their ease of genetic manipulation and striking cell morphologies. Many fungal species undergo filamentous growth—a specialized growth pattern where cells produce elongated tube-like projections. Filamentous growth promotes expansion into new environments, including invasion into plant and animal hosts by fungal pathogens. The same signaling pathways that regulate filamentous growth in fungi also control cell differentiation throughout eukaryotes and include highly conserved mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathways, which is the focus of this review. In many fungal species, mucin-type sensors regulate MAPK pathways to control filamentous growth in response to diverse stimuli. Once activated, MAPK pathways reorganize cell polarity, induce changes in cell adhesion, and promote the secretion of degradative enzymes that mediate access to new environments. However, MAPK pathway regulation is complicated because related pathways can share components with each other yet induce unique responses (i.e. signal specificity). In addition, MAPK pathways function in highly integrated networks with other regulatory pathways (i.e. signal integration). Here, we discuss signal specificity and integration in several yeast models (mainly Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Candida albicans) by focusing on the filamentation MAPK pathway. Because of the strong evolutionary ties between species, a deeper understanding of the regulation of filamentous growth in established models and increasingly diverse fungal species can reveal fundamentally new mechanisms underlying eukaryotic cell differentiation. Abstract

Abstract Background The non-communicable disease (NCD) epidemic among Pacific Islanders prompted the declaration of a regional state of NCD emergency throughout the United States-Affiliated Pacific Islands (USAPIs) in 2010. Subsequently, the University of Guam Health Science Program launched a pilot study on NCD research in its undergraduate curriculum modeled after the Pacific Data for Decision Making (DDM) framework – a field epidemiology training program employed in the USAPIs. The primary objective of the research is to conduct annual assessments of student health indicators with plans for longitudinal follow-up. Here, development and evaluation of the undergraduate research curriculum are described. Methods The Pacific DDM framework covering knowledge and skills in resourcing, types of data and indicators, data sources, data management, information products, and data dissemination and use were incorporated in undergraduate core courses of the Health Science Program. During the data collection pilot years, 2013 and 2014, a survey containing questions predominantly on NCD risk factors was launched at the university. The survey was administered by upperclassmen in the Health Science Program and evolved into the Pacific Islands Cohort of College Students (PICCS) research study. The initial years were spent developing the infrastructure. Program outputs were tracked annually to measure program success. Results Students in the Health Science Program obtained research knowledge and skills through various courses while enrolled in the program. The PICCS data collection continued annually as a cross-sectional survey from 2015 to current. Numerous successes have resulted including student abstracts and publications, acceptances to summer programs and fellowships, a sustained annual health fair for college students, a grant award, and other program-related impacts. Conclusion The PICCS framework provided the organizational structure and documented tools, protocols, roles, and responsibilities to enhance consistency and reproducibility. Undergraduate students applied their knowledge and skills to an ongoing study focused on NCD risk factor surveillance of college students. Additionally, multiple research successes have been achieved through the PICCS curriculum. Plans are underway to begin the longitudinal design of the PICCS research study and sustain it through the curriculum, with room for adaptation as courses are updated over time.

15. Fundamental absorption edges in heteroepitaxial YBiO$_3$ thin films

Abstract

The dielectric function of heteroepitaxial YBiO$_3$ grown on $a$-Al$_2$O$_3$ single crystals via pulsed laser deposition is determined in the spectral range from 0.03 eV to 4.5 eV by simultaneous modeling of spectroscopic ellipsometry and optical transmission data of YBiO$_3$ films of different thickness. The (111)-oriented YBiO$_3$ films are nominally unstrained and crystallize in a defective fluorite-type structure with $Fm\bar{3}m$ space group. From the calculated absorption spectrum, a direct electronic bandgap energy of 3.6(1) eV and the signature of an indirect electronic transition around 0.5 eV are obtained. These values provide necessary experimental feedback to previous conflicting electronic band structure calculations predicting either a topologically trivial or non-trivial insulating ground state in YBiO$_3$., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Cryptococcosis is a potentially lethal disease of humans/animals caused by Cryptococcus neoformans and Cryptococcus gattii. Distinction between the two species is based on phenotypic and genotypic characteristics. Recently, it was proposed that C. neoformans be divided into two species and C. gattii into five species based on a phylogenetic analysis of 115 isolates. While this proposal adds to the knowledge about the genetic diversity and population structure of cryptococcosis agents, the published genotypes of 2,606 strains have already revealed more genetic diversity than is encompassed by seven species. Naming every clade as a separate species at this juncture will lead to continuing nomenclatural instability. In the absence of biological differences between clades and no consensus about how DNA sequence alone can delineate a species, we recommend using "Cryptococcus neoformans species complex" and "C. gattii species complex" as a practical intermediate step, rather than creating more species. This strategy recognizes genetic diversity without creating confusion.

17. Comparative Study of Optical and Magneto-Optical Properties of Normal, Disordered and Inverse Spinel Type Oxides

Abstract

Co$_3$O$_4$, ZnFe$_2$O$_4$, CoFe$_2$O$_4$, ZnCo$_2$O$_4$, and Fe$_3$O$_4$ thin films were fabricated by pulsed laser deposition at high and low temperatures resulting in crystalline single-phase normal, inverse, as well as disordered spinel oxide thin films with smooth surface morphology. The dielectric function, determined by spectroscopic ellipsometry in a wide spectral range from 0.5 eV to 8.5 eV, is compared with the magneto-optical response of the dielectric tensor, investigated by magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) spectroscopy in the spectral range from 1.7 eV to 5.5 eV with an applied magnetic field of 1.7 T. Crystal field, inter-valence and inter-sublattice charge transfer transitions, and transitions from O$_{2p}$ to metal cation 3d or 4s bands are identified in both the principal diagonal elements and the magneto-optically active off-diagonal elements of the dielectric tensor. Depending on the degree of cation disorder, resulting in local symmetry distortion, the magneto-optical response is found to be strongest for high crystal quality inverse spinels and for disordered normal spinel structure, contrary to the first principle studies of CoFe$_2$O$_4$ and ZnFe$_2$O$_4$. Abstract

Aim: To explore enablers and barriers to the creation of an oral health training for care workers at specialized centres for children with disabilities in Ouagadougou. Design: This was a formative study informed by the Theoretical Domains Framework using qualitative methods. Methods: Qualitative observations and 14 semi‐structured interviews were conducted with care workers from six specialized centres for disability. Results: Carer workers emphasized that a successful oral health training must account for available resources and competencies in each specific centre. Part of the training must be dedicated to oral hygiene targeted for people with disabilities and provide knowledge about risk factor management. Care workers must be empowered through the training with practical skills and tools to manage regular toothbrushing and identify oral health needs of their dependents. Conclusion: This study gathered valuable and unique perspectives about the roles of care workers of children with disabilities in Ouagadougou and underscores the need for improving access to oral health and care services for children with disabilities in low‐resourced settings. Implications for Patient Care: Teams planning oral health promotion activities in low resourced settings for vulnerable population groups can benefit from the methodology and results of this research for ensuring their interventions are appropriate and relevant. Impact: This is a unique field study conducted in a scarcely researched area of caregiving practices for children with disabilities in a low‐income country, Burkina Faso. Results from the disability centre observations and interviews with local caregivers are of great value to any team planning health projects in similar low‐resourced settings. Psychiatric and mental health nursing practices are highly context‐dependent, thus using proposed qualitative methods can help to ensure that planned interventions are appropriate and relevant. Abstract

Thin films are a prerequisite for application of the emergent exotic ground states in iridates that result from the interplay of strong spin-orbit coupling and electronic correlations. We report on pulsed laser deposition of Li$_{2}$IrO$_{3}$ films on ZrO$_{2}$:Y(001) single crystalline substrates. X-ray diffraction confirms preferential (001) and (10-1) out-of-plane crystalline orientations with well defined in-plane orientation. Resistivity between 35 and 300 K is dominated by a three-dimensional variable range hopping mechanism. The dielectric function is determined by means of spectroscopic ellipsometry and, complemented by Fourier transform infrared transmission spectroscopy, reveals a small optical gap of $\approx$ 300 meV, a splitting of the $5d$-$t_{2g}$ manifold, and several in-gap excitations attributed to phonons and possibly magnons., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

Abstract

Iridate thin films are a prerequisite for any application utilizing their cooperative effects resulting from the interplay of stron spin-orbit coupling and electronic correlations. Here, heteroepitaxial Na2IrO3 thin films with excellent (001) out-of-plane crystalline orientation and well defined in-plane epitaxial relationship are presented on various oxide substrates. Resistivity is dominated by a three-dimensional variable range hopping mechanism in a large temperature range between 300 K and 40 K. Optical experiments show the onset of a small optical gap of about 200 meV and a splitting of the Ir 5d-t2g manifold. Positive magnetoresistance below 3 T and 25 K shows signatures of a weak antilocalization effect. This effect can be associated with surface states in a topological insulator and hence supports proposals for a topological insulator phase present in Na2IrO3., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

Abstract

Unexpected ferromagnetism has been observed in carbon doped ZnO films grown by pulsed laser deposition [Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 127201 (2007)]. In this letter, we introduce carbon into ZnO films by ion implantation. Room temperature ferromagnetism has been observed. Abstract

Recent sequencing and assembly of the genome for the fungal pathogen Candida albicans used simple automated procedures for the identification of putative genes. We have reviewed the entire assembly, both by hand and with additional bioinformatic resources, to accurately map and describe 6,354 genes and to identify 246 genes whose original database entries contained sequencing errors (or possibly mutations) that affect their reading frame. Comparison with other fungal genomes permitted the identification of numerous fungus-specific genes that might be targeted for antifungal therapy. We also observed that, compared to other fungi, the protein-coding sequences in the C. albicans genome are especially rich in short sequence repeats. Finally, our improved annotation permitted a detailed analysis of several multigene families, and comparative genomic studies showed that C. albicans has a far greater catabolic range, encoding respiratory Complex 1, several novel oxidoreductases and ketone body degrading enzymes, malonyl-CoA and enoyl-CoA carriers, several novel amino acid degrading enzymes, a variety of secreted catabolic lipases and proteases, and numerous transporters to assimilate the resulting nutrients. The results of these efforts will ensure that the Candida research community has uniform and comprehensive genomic information for medical research as well as for future diagnostic and therapeutic applications.

38. Direct 16S/18S rRNA Gene PCR Followed by Sanger Sequencing as a Clinical Diagnostic Tool for Detection of Bacterial and Fungal Infections:a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract

rRNA gene Sanger sequencing is being used for the identification of cultured pathogens. A new diagnostic approach is sequencing of uncultured samples by using the commercial DNA extraction and sequencing platform SepsiTest (ST). The goal was to analyze the clinical performance of ST with a focus on nongrowing pathogens and the impact on antibiotic therapy. A literature search used PubMed/Medline, Cochrane, Science Direct, and Google Scholar. Eligibility followed PRISMA-P criteria. Quality and risk of bias were assessed drawing on QUADAS-2 (quality assessment of diagnostic accuracy studies, revised) criteria. Meta-analyses were performed regarding accuracy metrics compared to standard references and the added value of ST in terms of extra found pathogens. We identified 25 studies on sepsis, infectious endocarditis, bacterial meningitis, joint infections, pyomyositis, and various diseases from routine diagnosis. Patients with suspected infections of purportedly sterile body sites originated from various hospital wards. The overall sensitivity (79%; 95% confidence interval [CI], 73 to 84%) and specificity (83%; 95% CI, 72 to 90%) were accompanied by large effect sizes. ST-related positivity was 32% (95% CI, 30 to 34%), which was significantly higher than the culture positivity (20%; 95% CI, 18 to 22%). The overall added value of ST was 14% (95% CI, 10 to 20%) for all samples. With 130 relevant taxa, ST uncovered high microbial richness. Four studies demonstrated changes of antibiotic treatment at 12% (95% CI, 9 to 15%) of all patients upon availability of ST results. ST appears to be an approach for the diagnosis of nongrowing pathogens. The potential clinical role of this agnostic molecular diagnostic tool is discussed regarding changes of antibiotic treatment in cases where culture stays negative.

Abstract

Vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) is a prevalent gynaecological disease characterised by vaginal wall inflammation that is caused by Candida species. VVC impacts almost three-quarters of all women throughout their reproductive years. As the vaginal mucosa is the first point of contact with microbes, vaginal epithelial cells are the first line of defence against opportunistic Candida infection by providing a physical barrier and mounting immunological responses. The mechanisms of defence against this infection are displayed through the rapid shedding of epithelial cells, the presence of pattern recognition receptors, and the release of inflammatory cytokines. The bacterial microbiota within the mucosal layer presents another form of defence mechanism within the vagina through acidic pH regulation, the release of antifungal peptides and physiological control against dysbiosis. The significant role of the microbiota in maintaining vaginal health promotes its application as one of the potential treatment modalities against VVC with the hope of alleviating the burden of VVC, especially the recurrent disease. This review discusses and summarises current progress in understanding the role of vaginal mucosa and host immunity upon infection, together with the function of vaginal microbiota in VVC.

Abstract

We demonstrate that excitons in semiconductor alloys are subject to competing localization effects due to disorder (random potential fluctuations) and shallow point defects (impurities). The relative importance of these effects varies with alloy chemical composition, impurity activation energy as well as temperature. We evaluate this effect quantitatively for MgxZn1−xO : Al (0 6 x 6 0.058) and find that exciton localization at low (2 K) and high (300 K) temperatures is dominated by shallow donor impurities and alloy disorder, respectively.
