Abstract

Plant functional traits have been recognized as important factors related to the ecological strategies of species in forest ecosystems. We examined the relationships between functional traits and both tree species performance and environmental conditions in a subtropical forest in Brazil. Over four years (2008-2012), we investigated how demographic rates were related to functional traits (wood density, leaf area and tree height) of 20 species sampled within 50 plots of 10 × 20 m, which had previously evaluated as to environmental conditions. Non-metric multidimensional scaling was used to order the species by their functional traits. The demographic rates were fit a posteriori to the ordination, with significant rates (p < 0.05) plotted as vectors. The relationships between environmental conditions and the community-weighted means (CWMs) of trait values were verified using redundancy analysis. CWM wood density was positively correlated with soil pH. CWM leaf area and CWM maximum tree height were both negatively correlated with altitude and positively correlated with soil magnesium (Mg) content. The taller species with lower wood density, which occupied the forest canopy, had a greater diameter increment and lower recruitment than did the shortest species with higher wood density. The shorter species with higher wood density, which occupied the understory, had greater recruitment and a greater increase in abundance than did the taller/lower-wood-density species. Our study (i) revealed changes in the forest related to the light environment, with an increase in the relative participation of shade-tolerant species with higher wood densities, and (ii) detected small-scale spatial variation in community traits as a response to variations in soil chemical properties and topography.

4. Análisis de la ocurrencia de Ocotea porosa (Lauraceae) a través del método de regresión logística

Abstract

This study was directed towards examining factors that influence the occurrence of Ocotea porosa (Nees) L. Barroso (Lauraceae) in the mixed Ombrophylous forest at the Caçador Forest Reserve in Santa Catarina State, Brazil. The sampling area was 8 ha and consisted of four subunits (20 x 500 m) distributed in the four cardinal directions. A total of eight subunits were installed, and each was divided into 50 plots of 10 x 20 m. In each plot, all individuals of O. porosa 10 cm or more in height were noted. Data on basal area, inclination, exposition, altitude and the qualitative type of soil were analyzed by logistic regression methods to verify the influence of site and competition characteristics on the occurrence of O. porosa. The main factor influencing the presence of the species was a negative correlation with the hydric soil. The basal area was positively correlated for the population as a whole, and negatively correlated for the natural regeneration in relation to the occurrence of the species., El presente trabajo tuvo por objetivo estudiar los factores que influencian la ocurrencia de Ocotea porosa (Nees) L. Barroso (Lauraceae), en el Bosque Ombrófilo Mixto, ubicado en la Reserva Forestal de Caçador, en el Estado de Santa Catarina, Brasil. Se utilizó el método de unidades de muestreo en forma de conglomerado, compuesto por 4 subunidades (20 x 500 m) distribuidas en las 4 direcciones cardinales. En total, 8 subunidades fueron instaladas, sumando 8 hectáreas de área de muestreo. Cada subunidad fue dividida en 50 parcelas de 10 x 20 m. En cada parcela todos los individuos de Ocotea porosa de tamaño igual o superior a 10 cm de altura fueron notificados. Para verificar la influencia de características del sitio y de competencia, en la presencia o ausencia de Ocotea porosa, en cada parcela se obtuvieron datos del área basal, inclinación, exposición, altitud y tipo cualitativo de suelo, que fueron analizados por el método de regresión logística. Los resultados muestran que el principal factor que influye en la presencia de la especie de manera negativa fue el suelo hídrico. El área basal se correlaciona, en relación con la ocurrencia de la especie, de forma positiva para la población como un todo y de manera negativa para la regeneración natural.
