1. Questionable Exercises.

Abstract

This publication presents general guidelines for exercise prescription that have an anatomical basis but also consider the exerciser's ability to do the exercise correctly. It reviews various common questionable exercises, explaining how some exercises, especially those designed for flexibility and muscle fitness, can cause harm. Safer alternatives are provided. Section 1 discusses parameters of evaluation. Section 2 describes the spine. Section 3 explains spinal movements, focusing on the neck (cervical) area, the trunk area, and the pelvic area. It examines exercise concerns related to cervical spine range of motion; hip-joint flexion range of motion; hip-joint/trunk (extension strength); trunk/hip-joint (flexion strength); and other nuances of abdominal strength. Section 4 discusses the knee, noting exercise concerns and describing the standing quadricep/hip-flexor stretch, the hurdler stretch, knee hyperflexion, and high impact exercises. Section 5 summarizes the issue, re-emphasizing the fact that certain exercises that are appropriate for some people may be totally inappropriate for others. The quality of the exerciser's movements is a critical variable when evaluating exercises for inclusion in a conditioning program. Criteria to consider when judging an exercise or an exerciser are included. Several important definitions are also provided. (Contains 41 references.) (SM)

3. An Interdisciplinary Approach to Training the Arrhythmic Child. Final Project Report and Addendum to Final Project Report.

Abstract

The final report and addendum document a 2-year study which examined the efficacy of a rhythmic training program to improve rhythmic skill in children with mild mental retardation or learning disabilities (year 1) or hearing impairments (year 2). The study was based on the writings of the Soviet neuropsychologist A. R. Luria suggesting the value of improving rhythmicity skills in disabled individuals. During the first year of the study 268 learning disabled and educable mentally retarded children between the ages of 7 and 10 participated, while during the second year participants were 43 children between the ages of 9 and 14 from the Tennessee School for the Deaf. Results indicated the treatment groups performed significantly better than the control groups on the rhythmic testing protocol. Both treatment and control groups were found to improve significantly in response to tactile stimuli rather than visual stimuli. (DB)

4. Rhythm and Motor Ability in Developmentally Disabled Children.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between a developmentally disabled child's ability to perform (a) a simple rhythmic task, and (b) a series of gross and fine motor tasks. The subjects of this study were 77 boys aged 65 months (5.416 years) to 174 months (14.5 years). All were classified as educable mentally retarded, emotionally disturbed, and/or developmentally disabled. In addition, some of these children were believed to have minimal brain dysfunction or damage. The motor tests used in the comparison were (a) developmental test of visual-motor integration; (b) hopping right foot; (c) hopping left foot; (d) hop two right foot, two left, plus hop two left foot, two right; (e) body perception; (f) locomotor agility; and (g) standing broad jump. The rhythmic test required the subject to tap with a rhythmic signal from a metronome with a visible oscillating pendulum. The highest coefficients were between the rhythmic tests and the developmental test of visual-motor integration, while the lowest were between rhythmic ability scores and (a) body perception, and (b) standing broad jump scores. Results of comparisons suggest that temporal perception and rhythmic expression are related to certain motor abilities in exceptional children. (PB)

5. Hamstring Injuries--An Examination of Possible Causes.

Abstract

On the basis of research, the following characteristics appear to be important factors relative to precluding hamstring strains in sprinters: bilaterality relative to hamstring and quadricep strength development, optimum strength ratios between ipsilateral antagonists throughout the range of movement, and above-normal hip-joint flexibility.
