Abstract

As one of the Analysis Centers (AC) of the International GNSS Service (IGS), Wuhan University (WHU) has been contributing to the IGS by providing ultra-rapid as well as rapid orbit and clock solutions for the established GPS and GLONASS since 2012. In the same year, the IGS initiated the Multi-GNSS Experiment (MGEX) to support the analysis of the emerging GNSS systems and prepare the IGS for Multi-GNSS, which includes GPS, GLONASS, the European Galileo system, the Chinese Beidou Navigation Satellite System (BDS), the Japanese Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (QZSS) and the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS/NaVIC). The major products, i.e., orbits, Earth Orientation Parameters (EOPs), satellite clock as well as attitude have also been provided by WHU since 2012. More recently, WHU has engaged the third reprocessing of IGS for generating the highly accurate station coordinates as inputs for establishment of the International Terrestrial Reference Frame (ITRF) 2020 during 2019—2020. This article presents the recent major advancements of the IGS AC at Wuhan University, including precise products, real-time products, bias products, antenna phase center calibration, and the non-linear motion modeling for GNSS Reference Stations.

5. Firm financial behaviour dynamics and interactions : is leverage residually determined?

Abstract

This thesis investigates the dynamics and interactions of firm financial behaviours, with a focus on capital structure (leverage) decisions. The thesis is composed of three empirical chapters, after a review of the literature in Chapter 2. Chapter 3 of the thesis uses a five-variable Structural Vector Autoregression (SVAR) framework to investigate the dynamics and interactions of firm financial behaviours (i.e., investment, dividend, leverage, equity issuance and profitability). The results show that the aforementioned financial behaviours are jointly-determined. Firms deviate from the desired level of each financial characteristic to absorb shocks to the other financial characteristics. The deviation is followed by a reversion in subsequent periods. Leverage is the most easily-influenced variable among the five, but there is still a clear tendency to revert. Chapter 4 discusses the mechanical effects of other financial behaviours on leverage target adjustments. This chapter extends the traditional partial adjustment model of capital structure by using interaction terms to capture the mechanical effects of other financial behaviours. The results show that capturing other financial behaviours reduces the estimated leverage adjustment speed by around 50%. Beyond that, there is still a substantial fraction of the observed adjustment, which is not controlled by the mechanical effects. This indicates that firms actively adjust their leverage ratio. Chapter 5 evaluates the supply-side effects on firm capital structure. Using a list of macroeconomic proxies, this chapter empirically demonstrates that firm leverage policy is associated with supply-side factors. However, controlling these factors does not eliminate leverage target adjustments. This indicates that the observed leverage target adjustment is not driven by the cyclical supply-side factors. Although firms adjust their leverage ratio to accommodate other financial behaviours and supply-side effects, the results show that leverage target adjustment remains robust. Overall, the evidence in this thesis supports the trade-off theory of capital structure, against the criticism that firm leverage policy might be residually determined. This thesis contributes to understanding corporate financial decisions in dynamic settings.

Abstract

Quantifying the carbon budget in rice paddy ecosystems is fundamental to understanding the role of paddy fields as carbon sinks or sources and to mitigating global climate change. This study used a process‐based model of the denitrification‐decomposition (DNDC) model to estimate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and carbon sinks in the paddy ecosystem across China. The simulation results showed that the GHG emissions were 0.147 Pg C‐equivalent year−1 and that the carbon sequestration in rice plants and soils reached 0.253 Pg C year−1 in 2016, indicating high carbon sequestration potential of the Chinese paddy ecosystem. Land management had a great influence on carbon budgets, among which straw residue incorporation rate and nitrogen fertilizer applications had a stronger influence on carbon budgets, particularly for double cropping rice. These results indicate that appropriate tillage practices can reduce GHG emissions and increase carbon sequestration of rice ecosystems while ensuring rice yields. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MEK-1, the kinase that activates the extracellular signal regulated kinases (ERK), is activated and phosphorylated by Raf-1. A new Raf-1-interacting protein has been isolated, using a two-hybrid screen. The protein, named Raf kinase inhibitor protein (RKIP) inhibits the activation and phosphorylation of MEK by Raf-1.

Abstract

Trophoblast cell surface antigen 2 (Trop-2) is overexpressed on many epithelial carcinomas while having low levels of expression on normal tissue. Overexpression of Trop-2 has been correlated with poor prognosis in several solid tumors. Trop-2 is overexpressed in ~60% of gastric cancer, which causes more than 500,000 mortalities every year in China. We have developed a Trop-2 antibody-drug conjugate (ADC), BAT8003, that utilizes an anti-Trop-2 IgG1 antibody, engineered for site-specific conjugation, a novel uncleavable linker, and a potent maytansine derivative as the payload. Site-specific conjugation allows for a more controllable drug-antibody ratio (DAR), resulting in a more homogenous product. BAT8003 also incorporates increased ADCC effects through afucosylation to further enhance potency. Here we show that BAT8003 is internalized in Trop-2 positive cells. It inhibits proliferation of a number of different Trop2-overexpressed tumor cells with IC50s of ~1 nM. In a gastric cancer (NCI-N87) mouse xenograft model, BAT8003 demonstrates strong inhibition activity on tumor growth at doses of 5 mg/kg and 15 mg/kg. A multiple dose toxicity study in monkey reveals that the highest non-severely toxic dose (HNSTD) of BAT8003 is 20 mg/kg when dose once every 3 weeks. The preclinical profile of BAT8003 warrants further clinical development for the treatment of gastric cancer as well as other Trop-2 over-expressing cancers.
