We propose a scheme to realize quantum controlled-Z (CZ) gates through single gradient metasurface. Using its unique parallel beam-splitting feature, i.e., a series of connected beam splitters with the same splitting ratio, one metasurface can support a CZ gate, several independent CZ gates, or a cascaded CZ gates. Taking advantage of the input polarization determined output path-locking feature, both polarization-encoded and path-encoded CZ gates can be demonstrated on the same metasurface, which further improves the integration level of quantum devices. Our research paves the way for integrating quantum logical function through the metasurface.

Gradient metasurface, formed by a set of subwavelength unit cells with different phase modulation, is widely used in polarized beam splitting (BS) in the classical and quantum optics. Specifically, its phase gradient allows the path and polarization of multiple output lights to be locked by corresponding inputs.Using this unique path-polarization locked property, we demonstrate that the single metasurface can function as sequentially linked beamsplitters, enabling the parallelization of a series of BS processes. Such a parallel BS metasurface provides a multi-beam interference capability for both classical and quantum light manipulation. Taking this advantage, we first prepare path and polarization hybrid entangled states of two, three, and multi photons from unentangled photon sources. Then, the ability of parallel BS-facilitated entanglement is applied to demonstrate entanglement fusion among entangled photon pairs, which can greatly enlarge the entanglement dimension. The principle of parallel BS through the metasurface opens up a versatile way to manipulate the quantum state at the micro/nano scale, which will have potential applications in on-chip quantum optics and quantum information processing.

We study the resonant enhancement of linear and nonlinear chiroptical effects in asymmetric silicon metasurfaces supporting multipolar Mie resonances and quasi-bound states in the continuum (quasi-BICs). We demonstrate theoretically and observe in experiment the pronounced linear circular dichroism at the quasi-BIC resonances. We further find that both local field enhancement and third-harmonic signal are large for Mie resonances and some quasi-BIC modes. We explain the selectivity of the nonlinear enhancement by employing the concept of critical coupling being more favorable for the modes with moderately large radiative quality factors ($Q$ factors). We demonstrate experimentally strong nonlinear chiroptical response associated with high efficiency of the third-harmonic generation and large nonlinear circular dichroism varying from $+0.918\pm0.049$ to $-0.771\pm0.004$ for the samples with different asymmetries. Nanophotonic platforms such as metasurfaces, achieving arbitrary phase profiles within ultrathin thickness, emerge as miniaturized, ultracompact and kaleidoscopic optical vortex generators. However, it is often required to segment or interleave independent subarray metasurfaces to multiplex optical vortices in a single nano device, which in turn affects the compactness and channel capacity of the device. Here, inspired by phyllotaxis patterns in pine cones and sunflowers, we theoretically prove and experimentally report that multiple optical vortices can be produced in a single compact phyllotaxis nanosieve, both in free space and on a chip, where one metaatom may contribute to many vortices simultaneously. The time resolved dynamics of on chip interference wavefronts between multiple plasmonic vortices was revealed by ultrafast time-resolved photoemission electron microscopy. Our nature inspired optical vortex generator would facilitate various vortex related optical applications, including structured wavefront shaping, free space and plasmonic vortices, and high capacity information metaphotonics.

Compact and robust cold atom sources are increasingly important for quantum research, especially for transferring cutting-edge quantum science into practical applications. In this letter, we report on a novel scheme that utilizes a metasurface optical chip to replace the conventional bulky optical elements used to produce a cold atomic ensemble with a single incident laser beam, which is split by the metasurface into multiple beams of the desired polarization states. Atom numbers $~10^7$ and temperatures (about 35 ${\mu}$K) of relevance to quantum sensing are achieved in a compact and robust fashion. Our work highlights the substantial progress towards fully integrated cold atom quantum devices by exploiting metasurface optical chips, which may have great potential in quantum sensing, quantum computing and other areas.

Phase, polarization, amplitude and frequency represent the basic dimensions of light, playing crucial roles for both fundamental light-mater interactions and all major optical applications. Metasurface emerges as a compact platform to manipulate these knobs, but previous metasurfaces have limited flexibility to simultaneous control them. Here, we introduce a multi-freedom metasurface that can simultaneously and independently modulate phase, polarization and amplitude in an analytical form, and further realize frequency multiplexing by a k-space engineering technique. The multi-freedom metasurface seamlessly combine geometric Pancharatnam-Berry phase and detour phase, both of which are frequency-independent. As a result, it allows complex-amplitude vectorial hologram at various frequencies based on the same design strategy, without sophisticated nanostructure searching of massive size parameters. Based on this principle, we experimentally demonstrate full-color complex-amplitude vectorial meta-holograms in the visible with a metal-insulator metal architecture, unlocking the long-sought full potential of advanced light field manipulation through ultrathin metasurfaces.

Optical metasurfaces open new avenues for precise wavefront control of light for integrated quantum technology. Here, we demonstrate a hybrid integrated quantum photonic system that is capable to entangle and disentangle two-photon spin states at a dielectric metasurface. By interfering single-photon pairs at a nanostructured dielectric metasurface, a path-entangled two-photon NOON state with circular polarization is generated that exhibits a quantum HOM interference visibility of 86 $\pm$ 4%. Furthermore, we demonstrate nonclassicality and phase sensitivity in a metasurface-based interferometer with a fringe visibility of 86.8 $\pm$ 1.1 % in the coincidence counts. This high visibility proves the metasurface-induced path entanglement inside the interferometer. Our findings provide a promising way to hybrid-integrated quantum technology with high-dimensional functionalities in various applications like imaging, sensing, and computing.

Nonlinear nanostructured surfaces provide a paradigm shift in nonlinear optics with new ways to control and manipulate frequency conversion processes at the nanoscale, also offering novel opportunities for applications in photonics, chemistry, material science, and biosensing. Here, we develop a general approach to employ sharp resonances in metasurfaces originated from the physics of bound states in the continuum for both engineering and enhancing the nonlinear response. We study experimentally the third-harmonic generation from metasurfaces composed of symmetry-broken silicon meta-atoms and reveal that the harmonic generation intensity depends critically on the asymmetry parameter. We employ the concept of the critical coupling of light to the metasurface resonances to uncover the effect of radiative and nonradiative losses on the nonlinear conversion efficiency., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

The abrupt phase change of light at metasurfaces provides high flexibility in wave manipulation without the need of accumulation of propagating phase through dispersive materials. In the linear optical regime, one important application field of metasurfaces is imaging by planar metalenses, which enables device miniaturization and aberration correction compared to conventional optical microlens systems. With the incorporation of nonlinear responses into passive metasurfaces, optical functionalities of metalenses are anticipated to be further enriched, leading to completely new applications areas. Here, we demonstrate imaging with nonlinear metalenses that combine the function of an ultrathin planar lens with simultaneous frequency conversion. With such nonlinear metalenses, we experimentally demonstrate imaging of objects with near infrared light while the image appears in the second harmonic signal of visible frequency range. Furthermore, the functionality of these nonlinear metalenses can be modified by switching the handedness of the circularly polarized fundamental wave, leading to either real or virtual nonlinear image formation. Nonlinear metalenses do not only enable infrared light imaging through a visible detector but also have the ability to modulate nonlinear optical responses through an ultrathin metasurface device while the fundamental wave remains unaffected, which offers the capability of nonlinear information processing with novel optoelectronic devices.

We propose and substantiate experimentally the cascaded rotational Doppler effect for interactions of spinning objects with light carrying angular momentum. Based on the law of parity conservation for electromagnetic interactions, we reveal that the frequency shift can be doubled through cascading two rotational Doppler processes which are mirror-imaged to each other. This effect is further experimentally verified with a rotating half-wave plate, and the mirror-imaging process is achieved by reflecting the frequency-shifted circularly polarized wave upon a mirror with a quarter-wave plate in front of it. The mirror symmetry and thus parity conservation guarantees that this doubled frequency shift can be further multiplied with more successive mirror-imaging conjugations, with photons carrying spin and/or orbital angular momentum, which could be widely applied for detection of rotating systems ranging from molecules to celestial bodies with high precision and sensitivity., Comment: Four Pages and Two Figures; Comments to Welcome

Structural symmetry of crystals plays important roles in physical properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials, particularly in the nonlinear optics regime. It has been a long-term exploration on the physical properties in 2D materials with various stacking structures, which correspond to different structural symmetries. Usually, the manipulation of rotational alignment between layers in 2D heterostructures has been realized at the synthetic stage through artificial stacking like assembling Lego bricks. However, the reconfigurable control of translational symmetry of crystalline structure is still challenging. High pressure, as a powerful external control knob, provides a very promising route to circumvent this constraint. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a pressure-controlled symmetry transition in layered InSe. The continuous and reversible evolution of structural symmetries can be in-situ monitored by using the polarization-resolved second harmonic generation (SHG) spectroscopy. As pressure changes, the reconfigurable symmetry transition of the SHG pattern from three-fold rotational symmetry to mirror symmetry was experimentally observed in a layered InSe samples and was successfully explained by the proposed interlayer-translation model. This opens new routes towards potential applications of manipulating crystal symmetry of 2D materials.

Metasurface, a kind of two-dimensional structured medium, represents a novel platform to manipulate the propagation of light at subwavelength scale. In linear optical regime, many interesting topics such as planar metalens, metasurface optical holography and so on have been widely investigated. Recently, metasurfaces go into nonlinear optical regime. While it is recognized that the local symmetry of the meta-atoms plays vital roles, its relationship with global symmetry of the nonlinear metasurfaces remains elusive. According to the Penrose tiling and the newly proposed hexagonal quasicrystalline tiling, here we designed and fabricated the nonlinear optical quasicrystal metasurfaces based on the geometric phase controlled plasmonic meta-atoms with local rotational symmetry. The second harmonic waves will be determined by both the tiling schemes of quasicrystal metasurfaces and the local symmetry of meta-atoms they consist of. The proposed concept opens new routes for designing nonlinear metasurface crystals with desired optical functionalities.

Third-order harmonic generation (THG) plays a vital role in microscopy, optical communications etc. Conventional methods of obtaining efficient THG in macroscopic crystal is already mature; however, they will finally limit the miniaturization and integration of on-chip laser sources. To date, THG from either photonic crystals or metamaterials provide compact photonic platforms, however selection of materials remains elusive. Herein, we experimentally demonstrate a giant enhancement of THG efficiency from an air/high index Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST225) /gold multi-layered Fabry-Perot cavity. At cavity resonant wavelength in near-infrared regime, the efficiency of THG from a 50 nm thick amorphous GST225 planar film is boosted by 422 times compared to that of nonresonant conditions. Interestingly, the THG efficiency has a dramatic decrease of three orders when the structural state of GST225 is transformed from amorphous to crystalline. Our findings have a potential for achieving ultra-compact nonlinear optical source with high efficiency and switchable functionality.

Curved reflective mirrors play an indispensable role in widely-employed Cassegrain-type optics, which consequently are inevitably bulky, and thus neither integratable nor well extendable. Through substituting geometric phase based reflective metasurfaces for curved mirrors, here a planar Cassegrain-type Schwarzschild objective is obtained, with both the focusing and imaging functionalities experimentally verified. The planar reflective objective achieved is intrinsically free of residual light and thus imposes less stringent restrictions on illuminating light and nanofabrications compared to its refractive counterpart. Our planar Cassegrain-type designs can potentially reshape and simplify the core components of the microscope and telescope systems working at a broadband spectral range, and thus opens new avenues for designing compact imaging systems.

In recent years, optical vortex beams possessing orbital angular momentum have caught much attention due to their potential for high capacity optical communications. This capability arises from the unbounded topological charges of orbital angular momentum (OAM) that provides infinite freedoms for encoding information. The two most common approaches for generating vortex beams are through fork diffraction gratings and spiral phase plates. While realization of conventional spiral phase plate requires complicated 3D fabrication, the emerging field of metasurfaces has provided a planar and facile solution for generating vortex beams of arbitrary orbit angular momentum. Here we realize a novel type of geometric metasurface fork grating that seamlessly combine the functionality of a metasurface phase plate for vortex beam generation, and that of a linear phase gradient metasurface for controlling the wave propagation direction. The metasurface fork grating is therefore capable of simultaneously controlling both the spin and the orbital angular momentum of light.

We prescribe a novel approach for continuously tailoring the local phase of the nonlinear polarizability which can lead to an arbitrary phase profile for harmonic generations. The introduced phase of the nonlinear polarizability is inherently a geometric Berry phase arising from the spin rotation coupling of light in the nonlinear regime. Nonlinear processes are often governed by selection rules imposed by the symmetries of the molecular configurations. The most well-known examples include the role of mirror symmetry breaking for the generation of even harmonics, and the selection rule related to the rotation symmetry in harmonic generation for fundamental beams with circular polarizations. While the role of mirror symmetry breaking in second harmonic generation has been extensively studied in plasmonic systems, the investigation on selection rules pertaining to circular polarization states of harmonic generation has been limited to crystals, i.e. symmetries at the atomic level. Here we demonstrate the rotational symmetry dependent third harmonic generation from nonlinear plasmonic metacrystals. We show that the selection rule can be imposed by the rotational symmetry of meta-crystals embedded into an isotropic organic nonlinear thin film. The results presented here may open new avenues for designing symmetry-dependent nonlinear optical responses with tailored plasmonic nanostructures., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures
