The NiCr/YSZ coating was fabricated on γ-TiAl alloy by double glow plasma surface metallurgy technology and multi-arc ion plating technology. The microstructure, microhardness, bonding strength, and burn resistance of NiCr/YSZ coating were studied in detail. The results showed that the NiCr/YSZ coating was dense and homogeneous, including a duplex structure of top YSZ ceramic coating and underlying Ni-Cr bond coating. The average microhardness of NiCr/YSZ coating was raised by a factor of about 2 compared to the γ-TiAl substrate. The thermal shock test indicated that the composite structure had superior bonding strength and the defects such as metal droplets on the ceramic coating were the source of cracks. The high-energy laser beam destroyed the surface of γ-TiAl alloy, forming protruding combustion products in ablation zone and splashing residues around ablation zone. When coated by NiCr/YSZ coating, the combustion process was delayed through isolating and dissipating heat. The ablation range was controlled and the ablation damage was reduced at the same irradiation power. The NiCr/YSZ coating preliminarily realized to improve the burn resistance of γ- TiAl alloy.

To improve the wear resistance of γ-TiAl alloy, Ta alloy layer was prepared on surface by double glow plasma surface alloying technique. The tribology behavior of Ta alloy layer against Si3N4 at 25℃, 350℃ and 500℃ were comparatively studied. The results showed that Ta alloy layer comprised a deposition layer and a diffusion layer. The deposition layer played a role in protection as a soft film. With the increase of temperature, the wear mechanism of γ-TiAl changed from abrasive wear to coexistence of abrasive wear and oxidation wear. Ta alloy layer’s wear mechanism changed from adhesive wear to coexistence of adhesive wear and oxidation wear. Surface Ta alloying process significantly reduced the wear volume, the specific wear rate and the friction coefficient of γ-TiAl and improved the wear resistance properties of γ-TiAl.

In the present paper, plasma surface alloying was implemented on powder metallurgy gears to improve its wear resistance based on double glow plasma surface metallurgy technology. A W-Mo alloy coating was obtained in the process. The morphology, microstructure and phase composition were investigated by SEM, EDS and XRD. The hardness was examined by Vickers hardness test and nanoindentation test. The tribological behavior of powder metallurgy gears before and after plasma surface alloying was evaluated on a ball-on-disc reciprocating sliding tribometer under dry sliding condition at room temperature. The results indicate that the W-Mo alloy coating is homogeneous without defects, which includes deposition layer and interdiffusion layer. The average microhardness of powder metallurgy gears before and after plasma surface alloying is 145.8 HV0.1 and 344.4 HV0.1, respectively; Nano hardness of deposition layer and interdiffusion layer is 5.76 GPa, 14.35 GPa, respectively. The specific wear rate of W-Mo alloy coating is lower than original PM gears. The wear mechanism of W-Mo alloy coating is slight adhesive wear. The W-Mo alloy coating prepared by double glow plasma surface alloying technology can effectively improve wear resistance of powder metallurgy gears.

Prey animals modify their behaviour and physiology in the presence of predators. Domestic animals differ from wild animals in having less exposure to wild predators, but whether they still retain an antipredator instinct is frequently unknown. In this study, we used domesticated Small Tail Han sheep as a model prey animal to gauge their response to the presence of predators, in the form of odours from the faeces of lion, tiger, and leopard. The faeces of male sheep and male rabbit (as a heterogeneous non-predator) were used as control. We found that the frequency and time of feeding, exploration, moving, watching, and lying down behaviours were significantly affected by predator odour, and that there was an interaction between odour sources and sex. When exposed to predator odour, sheep reduced their frequency and time of feeding, and increased their exploratory, moving, and watching behaviours. Female sheep showed greater motivation towards frequent and lengthy exploration, moving, watching, and lying down behaviours than male sheep, and less motivation towards feeding and drinking behaviours. Serum cortisol levels were lowest in response to tiger stimuli. These results illustrated that Small Tail Han sheep could recognise predator odour and adjust their behaviour to display antipredator strategies, and displayed some physiological responses, although only changing in serum cortisol could be significantly attributed to the odour of predators., (Copyright © 2023 The Author(s). The mechanism of dominant follicle selection is unclear because of its physiological complexity. However, some studies have reported that the immune system plays an important role in reproductive physiology. The objective of the current study was to investigate the differential expression of Toll-like receptors (TLRs) in the dominant (DFs) and nondominant follicles (NFs), and to determine the correlation between the expression of TLRs and the related genes, such as WNT4 and FOXL2. In this comparative study, the expression levels of TLRs, WNT4, and FOXL2 genes of DFs and NFs were obtained from three Dazu black goats were estimated using the real-time PCR. Our results showed no significant difference in the expression of seven TLRs (excluding TLR2, TLR5, and TLR8), WNT4, and FOXL2 between the DFs and NFs. In addition, the mRNA expression levels of WNT4 significantly correlated with the relative expression of TLR6 (r = 0.949739, P < 0.01); however, no significant expression of the TLR genes was found to be associated with FOXL2 mRNA expression. Our results support the fact that TLRs are not involved in the process of dominant follicle selection; however, TLR6 might play a role in the development of follicles by interacting with WNT4.

We compared the CMV Brite Turbo Kit (BT) and the Digene Hybrid Capture CMV DNA (version 2.0) assay (HC2) in the quantitation of pp65 antigenemia and cytomegalovirus (CMV) DNA levels in immunosuppressed renal transplant recipients. Of 123 blood specimens collected from 24 renal transplant recipients, BT and HC2 assays detected 35 and 39 positive samples, respectively. The overall concordance rate between the two assays was 90%. Discordant results were observed at low levels of viremia, so that 8 samples were HC2 positive but BT negative and another 4 were BT positive but HC2 negative. There was good correlation (R(2) = 0.766; P<0.01) between the levels of CMV DNA and pp65 antigenemia in the 31 concordant positive samples. Correlation between results obtained with the two assays was confirmed by longitudinal studies for a patient who developed clinical CMV disease. HC2 may be more sensitive at low viremia levels and allow earlier detection of impending CMV disease. The BT assay offered the advantage of a rapid (2-h) turnaround time. We conclude that BT and HC2 assays have similar sensitivity and efficacy in the diagnosis and monitoring of CMV infection and disease in renal transplant recipients. While the HC2 assay would be appropriate for centers that handle a large number of samples, the BT test may be more suitable for small sample numbers or when results are needed urgently.

Background: Leukocyte migration into the peritoneal cavity is a diagnostic feature of peritonitis in patients treated with peritoneal dialysis (PD). While neutrophil (PMN) influx is characteristic of the acute phase of peritoneal infection, significant mononuclear cell (MNC) infiltration, occurs throughout the whole period of infection. Recent data suggests that human peritoneal mesothelial cell (HPMC) adhesion molecule expression and the synthesis of chemotactic cytokines may be important in the process., Methods: In the present study we have examined, the regulation and directed secretion of chemokines (IL-8, MCP-1 and RANTES) and the basolateral to apical migration of unstimulated leukocytes across mesothelial cell monolayers using an in vitro model where HPMC were grown on the porous membrane of tissue culture inserts. Separate experiments have defined the importance of chemokine synthesis and ICAM-1 expression in the transmigration process., Results: Apical stimulation of HPMC with IL-1 beta or TNF alpha resulted in a time and dose dependent up-regulation of IL-8, MCP-1 and RANTES mRNA expression and synthesis. This secretion was predominately into the apical compartment (> 85%) with all chemokines. Apical pre-stimulation of HPMC resulted in a dose- and time-dependent migration of both PMN and MNC across HPMC. Neutrophil migration was significantly reduced in the presence of appropriate concentrations of polyclonal IL-8 antibody (IL-1 beta (100 pg/ml) 153 +/- 12 versus anti-IL-8 (100 ng/ml) 71 +/- 7 (X 10(3)) PMN, N = 6, P < 0.02) and in the presence of anti-ICAM-1 F(ab)'2 fragments or soluble ICAM-1. Constitutive and cytokine stimulated mononuclear cell migration was significantly reduced in the simultaneous presence of polyclonal MCP-1 or RANTES antibody., Conclusions: These data demonstrate that HPMC synthesize IL-8, MCP-1 and RANTES in response to inflammatory cytokines. HPMC-derived C-x-C and C-C chemokines might contribute to the intra-peritoneal recruitment of leukocytes during peritoneal inflammation.

Fibrosing cholestatic hepatitis is a histological variant of hepatitis B virus infection with a high rate of mortality. We describe a patient who acquired acute hepatitis B virus infection 8 months after renal transplantation. Clinical features of rapidly progressive liver failure, indicated by prolonged prothrombin time (57 seconds) and increased bilirubin (40.4 mg/dL) and ammonia (129 mumol/L) concentrations, were accompanied by an extremely high serum HBV DNA level (2.153 x 10(6) pg/mL). Liver biopsy specimen showed fibrosing cholestatic hepatitis with widespread balloon degeneration of hepatocytes, focal hepatocyte loss, bile stasis, periportal fibrosis, mild lymphocytic infiltration, and strongly positive immunohistochemical staining for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and hepatitis B core antigen. Lamivudine therapy suppressed HBV DNA to < 10 pg/mL within 4 weeks, which was followed by gradual recovery of liver function from a state of hepatic precoma. Twenty-four months after the onset of hepatitis, the patient had normal prothrombin time and bilirubin, transaminase, and albumin levels. She remained HBsAg positive and hepatitis B e antigen negative. Renal allograft function was stable, with a creatinine level of 1.52 mg/dL. HBV DNA remained suppressed after 22 months of lamivudine therapy. Our experience shows that fibrosing cholestatic hepatitis and liver failure caused by HBV infection can be successfully treated with lamivudine.

The stenosis and subsequent thrombosis of the arteriovenous fistulae may lead to a loss of vascular access sites; this a major problem in chronic haemodialysis patients. Percutaneous transluminal angioplasty has been a popular way of correcting such lesions in recent years. We have reviewed patients who underwent this operation from 1993 to 1996 at the Queen Mary Hospital. Among 11 patients who were documented as having arteriovenous fistula stenosis, 60% of lesions were in the anastomotic area while 40% were in the venous limb. All patients had abnormal dialysis blood line pressures corresponding to the actual site of stenosis. The initial success rate of percutaneous transluminal angioplasty in treating the stenotic lesions was 73%. This method is thus a promising form of semi-invasive treatment for symptomatic arteriovenous fistula stenosis.
