Abstract

The Chinese Government has promulgated the "Belt and Road Initiative" (BRI) to increase trade flows and integrate goods markets between China and BRI countries. The validity of purchasing power parity (PPP) implies well‐integrated goods markets, a precondition for further economic convergence, and the next stage of economic integration in factor, service, and financial markets. Our study aims to examine the validity of the PPP and the extent of goods market integration between China and selected BRI countries in Africa. Since the functional form of the cointegrating relationship may not be exact or linear, we adopt the nonparametric rank tests for analysis without prior knowledge and specification of the functional form. We also address the rank problems that occur in multivariate rank tests. Our empirical results provide strong evidence of an unrestricted PPP relationship with reasonably strong evidence of nonlinearity in the data. We also find that some African BRI countries have experienced goods market integration with China during the second‐half period only. This indicates that the introduction of the BRI in 2013 and China's active involvement in African economic development through BRI projects are leading to enhanced goods market integration between China and Africa. The results indicate favorable prospects of closer economic cooperation in the factor, service, and financial markets to build a free trade area or common markets with BRI countries in Africa. Abstract

Since 1979, China embarked on an economic reform to modernize the country. The reform was so successful that China was able to grow by an impressive rate of 9 percent per anum between 1979 and 1997. The rapid development of the economy leads to a drastic increase in demand for energy. Since China has the largest population in the world, its energy demand is nothing but huge. Each year, for example, China needs to install as much as 10,000 MW of new electricity generation capacity, which equals the curent capacity of Netherlands. This increase in demand for energy, which is likely to continue, wil have implications for global energy markets, the world price of energy and for the global environment as emissions of greenhouse gases grow rapidly. Against this background, there is an urgent need for the country to better manage the energy sector so that the market can function in an orderly manner. To tackle this issue, I single out three important energy problems to study. First, I wil examine the current situation of the energy imbalance in China. Second, I wil forecast how rapid the energy demand wil grow in future so that the deficit between the demand and domestic supply can be identified. Lastly, I wil discuss some methods that can be used to manage the demand. My finding shows that energy-capital and energy-material inputs are complementary, whereas the relationship of energy and labour is insignificant. In addition, the simulation exercises also reveals that a high energy pricing policy might not be effective in mitigating the demand and in encouraging firms to employ labour intensive techniques. Also, rising energy prices may bring spiral inflation and deterioration in the balance of payments and foreign resources. Therefore, government should act cautiously when increasing energy prices.

7. Price convergence in the UK supermarket chains: Evidence from nonlinear cointegration approach

Abstract

Supermarket chain is an important sector of the UK grocery stores and the growing dominance of supermarket chains has brought public concern over exploitation of market power in the UK retail grocery industry. This paper therefore aims to examine the price convergence of the UK supermarket products. Since the cointegrating relationship between supermarket prices may not be exact or linear, we adopt the rank tests for analysis which do not require prior knowledge and specification of the linear or nonlinear functional form. Our results confirm the evidence of the price convergence of all grocery products and then validate the price competition between the UK supermarket chains. Furthermore, a subset of the cointegration relationships exhibits nonlinear long-run price co-movements.

9. Christ and Business Culture: Another Classification of Christians in Workplaces According to an Empirical Study in Hong Kong

Abstract

We propose a new classification of Christians based on their levels of internal struggle and subsequent behaviors upon dealing with ethical issues in the workplace: Christian soldiers, panic followers, strugglers, and Sunday Christians. Then, we develop a model of potential, evolutionary processes that these Christian types may follow using game-theory analysis. We argue that Sunday Christians and Christian soldiers are the only two possible Christian equilibriums in repeated game settings. Finally, we use an empirical data set, which was conducted in Hong Kong, to illustrate our classifications and suggest potential strategies to efficiently allocate resources within Christian churches.Alan T. Abstract

This paper analyses post-90s teenagers in Hong Kong for their willingness to communicate their educational plans, personal challenges and academic difficulties to their parents, their teachers and their peers. Through logistic regression methods, this paper identifies demographic characteristics of those who are willing to share and those who are not, from a dataset of 308 students. Characteristics of those who are reluctant to share with anyone about any problems are also identified. This paper finds out a direct relationship between relationship closeness and the teenager's willingness to self-disclose.
