In searches for rare phenomena such as elastic scattering of dark matter particles or neutrinoless double beta decay, alpha decays of Rn222 progenies attached to the surfaces of the detection material have been identified as a serious source of background. In measurements with CsI(Tl) scintillator crystals, we demonstrate that alpha decays of surface contaminants produce fast signals with a characteristic mean-time distribution that is distinct from those of neutron- and gamma-induced events., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures

Liquid xenon is a suitable material for a dark matter search. For future large scale experiments, single phase detectors are attractive due to their simple configuration and scalability. However, in order to reduce backgrounds, they need to fully rely on liquid xenon's self-shielding property. A prototype detector was developed at Kamioka Observatory to establish vertex and energy reconstruction methods and to demonstrate the self-shielding power against gamma rays from outside of the detector. Sufficient self-shielding power for future experiments was obtained., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures

The intensity of scintillation light emission from liquid xenon at room temperature was measured. The scintillation light yield at 1 deg. was measured to be 0.64 +/- 0.02 (stat.) +/- 0.06 (sys.) of that at -100 deg. Using the reported light yield at -100 deg. (46 photons/keV), the measured light yield at 1 deg. corresponds to 29 photons/keV. This result shows that liquid xenon scintillator gives high light yield even at room temperature., Comment: 16pages,12figures

Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
We have measured the thermal neutron capture cross section for w-180 nucleus. There is only one previous data on this cross section with a value of 30 $^{+300%}_{-100%}$ barn. To consider w-181 as a low energy neutrino source, the thermal neutron capture cross section should be measured more precisely to estimate the production rate of w-181 inside a nuclear reactor. We measured the cross section of w-180 with a natural tungsten foil and obtained a new value of 21.9 $\pm$ 2.5 barn, Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

Astrophysics - Abstract
The Korea Invisible Mass Search(KIMS) experiment presents new limits on WIMP-nucleon cross section using the data from an exposure of 3409 kgd taken with low background CsI(Tl) crystals at Yangyang underground laboratory. The most stringent limit on the spin dependent interaction for pure proton case is obtained. The DAMA signal region for both spin independent and spin dependent interactions for the WIMP mass higher than 20 GeV/c^2are excluded by the single experiment with crystal scintillators., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

Introduction: Quality and safety is a core competency, yet there are limited formalised quality improvement (QI) courses for physician trainees offered in Australia. Methods: An introductory QI workshop was conducted for trainees at the Internal Medicine Society of Australia and New Zealand (IMSANZ) Conference 2022. The workshop covered principles of improvement science, QI tools and plan-do-study-act (PDSA) cycles. The contents were delivered through a small-group experiential learning format. Pre- and post-workshop surveys were administered to evaluate the participants' perceptions and improvement in QI knowledge domains. Results: Thirty-five trainees attended the workshop. Of all respondents, none had received formal QI training previously. Statistically significant improvements in nearly all QI knowledge domains were noted in the post-workshop evaluation along with improvement in participants' motivation to further learn QI processes relevant to their vocation. Conclusion: An introductory workshop can significantly improve knowledge and motivation to further learn QI amongst physician trainees. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Genetic alterations in signaling pathways that control cell-cycle progression, apoptosis, and cell growth are common hallmarks of cancer, but the extent, mechanisms, and co-occurrence of alterations in these pathways differ between individual tumors and tumor types. Using mutations, copy-number changes, mRNA expression, gene fusions and DNA methylation in 9,125 tumors profiled by The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), we analyzed the mechanisms and patterns of somatic alterations in ten canonical pathways: cell cycle, Hippo, Myc, Notch, Nrf2, PI-3-Kinase/Akt, RTK-RAS, TGFβ signaling, p53 and β-catenin/Wnt. We charted the detailed landscape of pathway alterations in 33 cancer types, stratified into 64 subtypes, and identified patterns of co-occurrence and mutual exclusivity. Eighty-nine percent of tumors had at least one driver alteration in these pathways, and 57% percent of tumors had at least one alteration potentially targetable by currently available drugs. Thirty percent of tumors had multiple targetable alterations, indicating opportunities for combination therapy. An integrated analysis of genetic alterations in 10 signaling pathways in >9,000 tumors profiled by TCGA highlights significant representation of individual and co-occurring actionable alterations in these pathways, suggesting opportunities for targeted and combination therapies. The surface and interface magnetism of Fe/Cr/Fe(001) is investigated using the full-potential linearized augmented-plane-wave (FLAPW) energy band method. It is found that the magnetic moment of surface Fe is 2.37 [micro]B which is smaller than that of clean bcc Fe surface (2.98 [micro]B) but larger than that of bulk Fe (2.22 [[micro].sub.B]). The calculated magnetic moment of interface Fe, 2.01 [[micro].sub.B], is smaller than that of bulk value, while that of interface Cr, 0.75 [[micro].sub.B], is slightly enhanced compared with the bulk value (0.59 [[micro].sub.B]). We find that these features are related to a strong d-d hybridization between Fe and Cr. We also compare our results with previous calculations of Fe/Cr(001). The calculated charge density, spin density, and density of states are presented and discussed in relation to magnetic properties. The electronic structure and the magnetism of Fe monolayer (ML) on Cr(110) are investigated by means of the all-electron full-potential linearized augmented plan-wave (FLAPW) method, based on the local density approximation (LDA), with a single slab approach. To investigate the magnetic structure we assumed three possible magnetic interlayer couplings: (i) a ferromagnetic Fe ML on an in-plane antiferromagnetic (IAF) Cr(110) surface [FM Fe/IAF Cr(110)]; (ii) a layer antiferromagnetic (LAF) couping between adjacent layers [LAF Fe/Cr(110)]; (iii) an in-plane antiferromagnetic (IAF) coupling [IAF Fe/Cr(110)]. From total energy calculations FM Fe/IAF Cr(110) is found to be more stable by 9 meV and 550 meV than those of LAF Fe/Cr(110) and IAF Fe/Cr(110), respectively. It is found that the magnetic moments of Fe in FM Fe/IAF Cr(110), LAF Fe/Cr(110), and IAF Fe/Cr(110) are 2.23 [[micro].sub.B], 2.22 [[micro].sub.B], and 1.75/[[micro].sub.B], respectively, which are comparable to the calculated value (2.22 [[micro].sub.B]) of bulk Fe. Meanwhile, the magnetic moments at the subsurfaces Ct(S-1) are 0.20 [[micro].sub.B], 0.03 [[micro].sub.B], and 0.43 [[micro].sub.B] in FM Fe/IAF Cr(110), LAF Fe/Cr(110), and IAF Fe/Cr(110), respectively, which are significantly reduced compared to the calculated value (0.59 [[micro].sub.]B) of bulk Ct. The work functions of FM Fe/IAF Cr(110), LAF Fe/Cr(110), and IAF Fe/Cr(110) are calculated to be 5.46 eV, 5.46 eV, and 5.62 eV, respectively. - Abstract
The asteroid impact near the Russian city of Chelyabinsk on 15 February 2013 was the largest airburst on Earth since the 1908 Tunguska event, causing a natural disaster in an area with a population exceeding one million. Because it occurred in an era with modern consumer electronics, field sensors, and laboratory techniques, unprecedented measurements were made of the impact event and the meteoroid that caused it. Here, we document the account of what happened, as understood now, using comprehensive data obtained from astronomy, planetary science, geophysics, meteorology, meteoritics, and cosmochemistry and from social science surveys. A good understanding of the Chelyabinsk incident provides an opportunity to calibrate the event, with implications for the study of near-Earth objects and developing hazard mitigation strategies for planetary protection.

- Abstract
A protein chip based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) was developed for measuring the Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae antibody titres using a recombinant 30-kDa fragment of P97 adhesin as an antigen. The diagnostic potential of this SPR assay, for detecting the antibody titres to the M. hyopneumoniae 30-kDa protein, was compared with that of conventional ELISA using 70 pig serum samples taken from six pig farms. The SPR assay was found to be highly specific and sensitive. Moreover, there was a strong positive correlation between the SPR and ELISA titres (n = 70, r = 0.898, P < 0.01). Therefore, this recombinant 30-kDa protein can be used as an antigen for serological studies, and the SPR, which is a label-free method, is expected to be a valuable and reproducible tool in the serodiagnosis of M. hyopneumoniae infection.
