This thesis studies the role of trust in the Catholic Reformation in seventeenth-century Genoa. It explores the way in which many reform-minded Catholics consciously tried to find an answer to the crisis of trust that dominated post-Reformation Europe by means of reforms and new initiatives. In particular, this dissertation examines how the effectiveness of these reforms and initiatives was impacted by practices of trust and distrust, as well as the reformers’ own perception of their strategies. Several features of the Catholic Reformation are analysed: the attempt to reform the secular clergy; new female religious initiatives; the effort to reform female cloistered life; and the establishment of new religious congregations. The trust approach used in this thesis constitutes an antidote to the current Italian paradigm in which the focus on power and discipline tends to obscure the plurality of the Italian Church in the seventeenth century. The concept moreover provides a key to explain several contradictions with which the current historiography confronts us such as the juxtaposition of instances of freedom and compulsion in the realm of female religiosity and the paradoxical coexistence of very ineffective and very successful attempts to reform.

At that time, the ultramontane reform, headed by the hierarchy of the Catholic Church, was at its peak and this congregation was one of the contributors to the process. However, this study intends to think of the Lazarists not only as reformist priests, but to reflect on the application of their model in Ceará. To do so, we will use institutional documents of the Congregation of the Mission, referring to France and Ceará, unpublished in researches in Brazil, crossing them with local documentation. Such a method will allow us to perceive the possible adaptations and conflicts, as well as the narratives constructed by them about an environment quite different from what they knew. Este trabalho propõe uma análise sobre as ações dos padres lazaristas franceses, pertencentes à Congregação da Missão no Ceará, entre os anos de 1870 a 1877, a fim de desenvolver seu modelo congregacional, durante as missões religiosas no interior da província. Nesse período, a reforma ultramontana, capitaneada pela hierarquia da Igreja Católica, estava em seu ápice e esta congregação foi uma das que mais contribuíram para esse processo. Entretanto, este estudo pretende considerar os lazaristas não apenas como padres reformistas, mas refletir sobre a aplicação do seu modelo no Ceará. Para tanto, usaremos documentos institucionais da Congregação da Missão, referentes à França e ao Ceará, inéditos em pesquisas no Brasil, cruzando-os com documentações locais. Tal método permitirá perceber as possíveis adaptações e conflitos, assim como as narrativas construídas por eles sobre um ambiente bastante diverso do que conheciam.

Cette contribution traite de la relation complexe entre catholiques libanais et écoles françaises au Liban entre 1900 et 1950. Elle a pour but de montrer que cette relation a une longue histoire et que sous l’influence grandissante de la France au Liban elle s’est encore consolidée parce qu’elle servait la quête d’identité politique et sociale des deux groupes. Alors que la période du régime ottoman témoignait d’un soutien et besoin réciproques entre catholiques libanais et écoles françaises, celle du régime mandataire fut marquée par un élargissement de cette coopération au profit d’un établissement des deux groupes au sein de l’élite politique, économique et sociale du pays. La période d’indépendance vit finalement la poursuite de cette relation étroite, mais aussi une plus grande ouverture vers d’autres communautés du pays, en particulier les sunnites. On peut donc parler d’un partage d’intérêts idéologiques mais aussi pragmatiques qui a survécu aux difficultés affrontées. This contribution deals with the complex relationship between the Lebanese Catholics and the French schools in Lebanon between 1900 and 1950. The intention here is to show that this relationship goes back to a long common history and was reinforced under the growing influence of France in Lebanon given that the cooperation helped both groups to find their political and social identity. The period of the late Ottoman Empire witnessed a close relationship of reciprocal need and support, the Mandate regime let both groups seek and find their place in the core of the political, economic and social elite positions of the country. After independence, the narrow relationship between Lebanese Catholics and French schools was pursued, but also broadened towards other communities in the country. One can thus speak of a common ground of ideological, but also pragmatic reasons which persisted despite difficulties.

Après 1794 l’ancien couvent de la Congrégation de saint Vincent de Paul , transformé en prison pour femmes, était devenu un lieu sinistre et mal entretenu qui menaçait ruine. L’architecte de l’administration pénitentiaire demande alors la démolition d’urgence de l’ancienne église gothique. En 1823, une nouvelle chapelle et une infirmerie sont construites par Louis-Pierre Baltard (1764-1846) nommé architecte des prisons du département de la Seine dix ans auparavant. La chapelle de plan pseudo-basilical avec une abside semi-circulaire est décorée de colonnes doriques. Elle est caractérisée par ses deux niveaux, une sorte de sous-sol ouvert et des galeries latérales de belle ampleur. Cette disposition permettait de différencier l’entrée des détenues de droit commun de celle des prostituées et évitait qu’elles se trouvent ensemble dans la nef. Cette église est un témoin de l’architecture religieuse de la Restauration, période assez peu féconde, et une œuvre bien représentative de Louis-Pierre Baltard qui a beaucoup participé aux débats architecturaux de son temps, mais qui a assez peu construit. L’ancienne infirmerie et la chapelle sont inscrites au titre des monuments historiques depuis le 28 novembre 2005.After 1794, the former convent of the Congregation of Saint Vincent de Paul, re-used as a prison for women, had become a sinister and badly maintained building which threatened ruin. The architect of the penitentiary administration demanded the urgent demolition of the convent’s old Gothic church. In 1823, a new chapel with an infirmary were built to the designs of Louis-Pierre Baltard (1764-1846), who had been appointed as architect for the prison administration of the Seine department ten years earlier. The chapel had a pseudo-basilical ground plan with a semi-circular apse, and had Doric columns. The building is characterised by its construction on two levels, with a sort of open basement level and generous side galleries. This design was intended to separate the entrances to keep the common law prisoners apart from the prostitutes and to prevent them from mingling in the nave. The church bears witness then to religious architecture during the period of the Restoration (1815-1830), a period which was not particularly prolific in its church building. It is also representative work for the architect Louis-Pierre Baltard who was an active participant in the architectural debates of his time but who in fact built very little. The former infirmary and the chapel were given statutory protection (inscription) on 28 November 2005.
