This tutorial is a pedagogical introduction to recent methods of computing quantum spin entanglement witnesses from spectroscopy, with a special focus on neutron scattering on quantum spin systems. We offer a brief introduction to the concepts and equations, define a data analysis protocol, and discuss the interpretation of three entanglement witnesses: one-tangle, two-tangle, and Quantum Fisher Information. We also discuss practical experimental considerations, and give three examples of extracting entanglement witnesses from experimental data: Copper Nitrate, KCuF3, and NiPS3., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

We study the impact of hole-doping on the Kitaev-Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice. We investigate the pairing tendencies and correlation functions in the framework of a $t-J-K$ model using density matrix renormalization group calculations on three-leg cylinders. In the case of the pure Kitaev model, which realizes a quantum spin-liquid phase at half-filling, we find that binding of two holes only occurs at low values of the hopping, where the holes are slow. We have theoretically verified that pair formation occurs in the limit of immobile holes, where the pure Kitaev model remains exactly solvable. When we instead fix the hopping at an intermediate, more realistic, value, and vary the Heisenberg and Kitaev interaction strengths, we find pairing tendencies only in the N\'eel phase. This is in contrast to prior mean-field calculations, highlighting the importance of accounting for the kinetic energy of dopants in generalized Kitaev models. Interestingly, we also find signatures of pair-density wave formation over the studied range of model parameters, namely a periodic modulation of the charge density as well as the spin-spin and pair-pair correlations in real space. Moreover, we present a comparative study of the different correlations as a function of doping. Fano resonances are ubiquitous phenomena appearing in many fields of physics, e.g. atomic or molecular photoionization, or electron transport in quantum dots. Recently, attosecond interferometric techniques have been used to measure the amplitude and phase of photoelectron wavepackets close to Fano resonances in argon and helium, allowing for the retrieval of the temporal dynamics of the photoionization process. In this work, we study the photoionization of argon atoms close to the $3s^13p^64p$ autoionizing state using an interferometric technique with high spectral resolution. The phase shows a monotonic $2{\pi}$ increase across the resonance or a sigmo\"idal less than ${\pi}$ variation depending on experimental conditions, e.g. the probe laser bandwidth. Using three different, state-of-the-art calculations, we show that the measured phase is influenced by the interaction between final states reached by two-photon transitions.

We report neutron scattering, pressure-dependent AC calorimetry, and AC magnetic susceptibility measurements of triangular lattice NaYbSe$_2$. We observe a continuum of scattering, which is reproduced by matrix product simulations, and no phase transition is detected in any bulk measurements. Comparison to heat capacity simulations suggest the material is within the Heisenberg spin liquid phase. AC Susceptibility shows a significant 23~mK downturn, indicating a gap in the magnetic spectrum. The combination of a gap with no detectable magnetic order, comparison to theoretical models, and comparison to other $A$YbSe$_2$ compounds all strongly indicate NaYbSe$_2$ is within the quantum spin liquid phase. The gap also allows us to rule out a gapless Dirac spin liquid, with a gapped $\mathbb{Z}_2$ liquid the most natural explanation., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures; 7 pages and 13 figures supplemental materials

In this study, we demonstrated the direct use of an inherently narrowband backward wave in the mid-infrared for CO$_2$ and H$_2$O vapor spectroscopy in ambient air. This wave is generated in a backward wave optical parametric oscillator (BWOPO) pumped by a multi longitudinal mode laser at 1030 nm, eliminating the need for additional spectral narrowing or wavelength stabilization. A full characterization of the source is presented, revealing a central output at 2712 nm, showcasing temperature tuning of -1.77 GHz/K, and achieving an output pulse energy of 2.3 $\mu$J. Novel methods are introduced for measuring the linewidth and wavelength stability using lab air. These approaches demonstrate a narrow output of 43 pm and establish an upper limit of stability at 65 MHz, with no active means of stabilization. These findings underscore the potential of BWOPOs as a robust platform for future DIAL systems.

The detection and certification of entanglement and quantum correlations in materials is of fundamental and far-reaching importance, and has seen significant recent progress. It impacts both our understanding of the basic science of quantum many-body phenomena as well as the identification of systems suitable for novel technologies. Frameworks suitable to condensed matter that connect measurements to entanglement and coherence have been developed in the context of quantum information theory. These take the form of entanglement witnesses and quantum correlation measures. The underlying theory of these quantities, their relation to condensed matter experimental techniques, and their application to real materials are comprehensively reviewed. In addition, their usage in e.g. protocols, the relative advantages and disadvantages of witnesses and measures, and future prospects in, e.g., correlated electrons, entanglement dynamics, and entangled spectroscopic probes, are presented. Consideration is given to the interdisciplinary nature of this emerging research and substantial ongoing progress by providing an accessible and practical treatment from fundamentals to application. Particular emphasis is placed on quantities accessible to collective measurements, including by susceptibility and spectroscopic techniques. This includes the magnetic susceptibility witness, one-tangle, concurrence and two-tangle, two-site quantum discord, and quantum coherence measures such as the quantum Fisher information., Comment: 41 pages, 13 figures, 2 tables

There is a growing interest in reconstructing the density matrix of photoelectron wavepackets, in particular in complex systems where decoherence can be introduced either by a partial measurement of the system or through coupling with a stochastic environment. To this end, several methods to reconstruct the density matrix, quantum state tomography protocols, have been developed and tested on photoelectrons ejected from noble gases following absorption of extreme ultraviolet (XUV) photons from attosecond pulses. It remains a challenge to obtain model-free, single scan protocols that can reconstruct the density matrix with high fidelities. Current methods require extensive measurements or involve complex fitting of the signal. Efficient single-scan reconstructions would be of great help to increase the number of systems that can be studied. We propose a new and more efficient protocol that is able to reconstruct the continuous variable density matrix of a photoelectron in a single time delay scan. It is based on measuring the coherences of a photoelectron created by absorption of an XUV pulse using a broadband infrared (IR) probe that is scanned in time and a narrowband IR reference that is temporally fixed to the XUV pulse. We illustrate its performance for a Fano resonance in He as well as mixed states in Ar arising from spin-orbit splitting. A backward wave optical parametric oscillator (BWOPO) waveguide in periodically poled Rb-doped KTP is presented. The waveguide exhibits low loss (0.16 dB/cm) and has an oscillation threshold, almost 20 times lower than the corresponding bulk device. The backward wave has a narrow linewidth of 21 GHz at 1514.6 nm while the forward wave at 1688.7 nm has a spectrum replicating the pump. The unique spectral features of the BWOPO will unlock novel opportunities in low-power nonlinear integrated optics. A conversion efficiency of 8.4% was obtained limited by the emergence of backward stimulated polariton scattering.

We investigate the pairing tendencies in the hole-doped Haldane spin-1 chain. To allow for doping, we extend the original spin chain Hamiltonian into a fermionic model involving a two-orbital Hubbard chain at intermediate or strong repulsive interaction strengths $U$, and for degenerate orbitals. At half-filling and large $U$, the ferromagnetic Hund's coupling, $J_\mathrm{H}$, generates effective spin-$1$ moments, with antiferromagnetic correlations between sites. Using large-scale density matrix renormalization group calculations, we study accurately the system's behavior under light hole-doping. For $U=1.6$ in units of the non-interacting bandwidth and for $J_\mathrm{H}/U\gtrsim 0.275$ we find that singlet pairing dominates the long-distance physics, establishing this system as a promising platform for repulsively mediated superconductivity. We provide concrete examples of materials that could realize the physics described here. We also provide evidence that the system approaches a Luther-Emery liquid state at large system sizes, reminiscent of the behavior of doped one-orbital two-leg ladders at weak coupling, which also have superconducting tendencies. The numerically calculated central charge approaches one in the thermodynamic limit, indicating a single gapless mode as is expected for the Luther-Emery state. Exponents characterizing the power-law decays of singlet pair-pair and charge density-density correlations are determined, and found to approximately satisfy the Luther-Emery identity., Comment: Main text: 10 pages, 9 figures. A photoelectron, emitted due to the absorption of light quanta as described by the photoelectric effect, is often characterized experimentally by a classical quantity, its momentum. However, since the photoelectron is a quantum object, its rigorous characterization requires the reconstruction of the complete quantum state, the photoelectron's density matrix. Here, we use quantum state tomography to fully characterize photoelectrons emitted from helium and argon atoms upon absorption of ultrashort, extreme ultraviolet light pulses. While in helium we measure a pure photoelectronic state, in argon, spin-orbit interaction induces entanglement between the ion and the photoelectron, leading to a reduced purity of the photoelectron state. Our work shows how state tomography gives new insights into the fundamental quantum aspects of light-induced electronic processes in matter, bridging the fields of photoelectron spectroscopy and quantum information, and offering new spectroscopic possibilities for quantum technology.

Magnetic excitations in the spin chain candidate Sr$_2$V$_3$O$_9$ have been investigated by inelastic neutron scattering on a single crystal sample. A spinon continuum with a bandwidth of $\sim22$ meV is observed along the chain formed by alternating magnetic V$^{4+}$ and nonmagnetic V$^{5+}$ ions. Incipient magnetic Bragg peaks due to weak ferromagnetic interchain couplings emerge when approaching the magnetic transition at $T_N\sim 5.3$ K while the excitations remain gapless within the instrumental resolution. Comparisons to the Bethe ansatz, density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations, and effective field theories confirm Sr$_2$V$_3$O$_9$ as a host of weakly coupled $S = 1/2$ chains dominated by antiferromagnetic intrachain interactions of $\sim7.1$(1) meV., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures

Quantum correlations are a fundamental property of quantum many-body states. Yet they remain experimentally elusive, hindering certification of genuine quantum behavior, especially in quantum materials. Here we show that the momentum-dependent dynamical susceptibility measured via inelastic neutron scattering enables the systematic reconstruction of a general family of quantum correlation functions, which express the degree of quantum coherence in the fluctuations of two spins at arbitrary mutual distance. Using neutron scattering data on the compound KCuF$_3$ $\unicode{x2014}$ a system of weakly coupled $S=1/2$ Heisenberg chains $\unicode{x2014}$ and of numerically exact quantum Monte Carlo data, we show that quantum correlations possess a radically different spatial structure with respect to conventional correlations. Indeed, they exhibit a new emergent length scale $\unicode{x2014}$ the quantum coherence length $\unicode{x2014}$ which is finite at any finite temperature (including when long-range magnetic order develops). Moreover, we show theoretically that coupled Heisenberg spin chains exhibit a form of quantum monogamy, with a trade-off between quantum correlations along and transverse to the spin chains. Attosecond photoelectron spectroscopy is often performed with interferometric experimental setups that require outstanding stability. We demonstrate and characterize in detail an actively stabilized, versatile, high spectral resolution attosecond beamline. The active-stabilization system can remain ultra-stable for several hours with an RMS stability of 13 as and a total pump-probe delay scanning range of \sim 400 fs. A tunable femtosecond laser source to drive high-order harmonic generation allows for precisely addressing atomic and molecular resonances. Furthermore, the interferometer includes a spectral shaper in 4f-geometry in the probe arm as well as a tunable bandpass filter in the pump arm, which offer additional high flexibility in terms of tunability as well as narrowband or polychromatic probe pulses. We show that spectral phase measurements of photoelectron wavepackets with the rainbow RABBIT technique (reconstruction of attosecond beating by two photon transitions) with narrowband probe pulses can significantly improve the photoelectron energy resolution. In this setup, the temporal-spectral resolution of photoelectron spectroscopy can reach a new level of accuracy and precision.

Fully gapped, spin singlet superconductors with antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling in a Zeeman magnetic field provide a promising route to realize superconducting states with non-Abelian topological order and therefore fault-tolerant quantum computation. Here we use a quantum Monte Carlo dynamical cluster approximation to study the superconducting properties of a doped two-dimensional attractive Hubbard model with Rashba spin-orbit coupling in a Zeeman magnetic field. We generally find that the Rashba coupling has a beneficial effect towards s-wave superconductivity. In the presence of a finite Zeeman field, when superconductivity is suppressed by Pauli pair-breaking, the Rashba coupling counteracts the spin imbalance created by the Zeeman field by mixing the spins, and thus restores superconductivity at finite temperatures. We show that this favorable effect of the spin-orbit coupling is traced to a spin-flip driven enhancement of the amplitude for the propagation of a pair of electrons in time-reversed states. Moreover, by inspecting the Fermi surface of the interacting model, we show that for sufficiently large Rashba coupling and Zeeman field, the superconducting state is expected to be topologically non-trivial.

We calculate the dynamical spin structure factor of the generalized spin-$1/2$ compass spin chain using the density matrix renormalization group. The model, also known as the twisted Kitaev spin chain, was recently proposed to be relevant for the description of the spin chain compound CoNb$_2$O$_6$. It features bond-dependent interactions and interpolates between an Ising chain and a one-dimensional variant of Kitaev's honeycomb spin model. The structure factor, in turn, is found to interpolate from gapped and non-dispersive in the Ising limit to gapless with non-trivial continua in the Kitaev limit. In particular, the component of the structure factor perpendicular to the Ising directions changes abruptly at the Kitaev point into a dispersionless continuum due to the emergence of an extensive groundstate degeneracy. We show this continuum is consistent with analytical Jordan-Wigner results. We study resonant two-photon ionization of helium atoms via the $1s3p$, $1s4p$ and $1s5p^1$P$_1$ states using the 15$^\mathrm{th}$ harmonic of a titanium-sapphire laser for the excitation and a weak fraction of the laser field for the ionization. The phase of the photoelectron wavepackets is measured by an attosecond interferometric technique, using the 17$^\mathrm{th}$ harmonic. We perform experiments with angular resolution using a velocity map imaging spectrometer and with high energy resolution using a magnetic bottle electron spectrometer. Our results are compared to calculations using the two-photon random phase approximation with exchange to account for electron correlation effects. We give an interpretation for the multiple $\pi$-rad phase jumps observed, both at and away from resonance, as well as their dependence on the emission angle.

Alpha-phase (a-) RuCl_3 has emerged as a prime candidate for a quantum spin liquid (QSL) that promises exotic quasiparticles relevant for fault-tolerant quantum computation. Here, we report spin sensitive transport measurements to probe spin correlation in a-RuCl_3 using a proximal spin Hall metal platinum (Pt). Both transverse and longitudinal resistivities exhibit oscillations as function of the angle between an in-plane magnetic field and the current, akin to previously measured spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) in antiferromagnet/Pt heterostructures. The oscillations are observed from 1.5 T to 18 T, both within and beyond the magnetic field range where the antiferromagnetic order and QSL state are reported in a-RuCl_3. The SMR oscillations show that spins in a-RuCl3 are largely locked to an in-plane quantization axis transverse to the magnetic field, constituting a continuous-symmetry-broken state that does not necessarily represent a long-range order. This robust anisotropy of spin axis uncovers critical energy scales connected with reported QSL signatures in a-RuCl_3. Simulations suggest a predominantly antiferromagnetic correlation to moderately high magnetic-fields, that may support the SMR oscillations. The coupling of the spin states within a-RuCl_3 and Pt demonstrated in our experiment opens a transport route to exploring exotic spin phases and device functionalities of QSL materials.

Recent work has demonstrated that quantum Fisher information (QFI), a witness of multipartite entanglement, and magnetic Van Hove correlations $G(r,t)$, a probe of local real-space real-time spin dynamics, can be successfully extracted from inelastic neutron scattering on spin systems through accurate measurements of the dynamical spin structure factor $S(k,\omega)$. Here we apply theoretically these ideas to the half-filled Hubbard chain with nearest-neighbor hopping, away from the strong-coupling limit. This model has nontrivial redistribution of spectral weight in $S(k,\omega)$ going from the non-interacting limit ($U=0$) to strong coupling ($U\rightarrow \infty$), where it reduces to the Heisenberg quantum spin chain. We use the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) to find $S(k,\omega)$, from which QFI is then calculated. We find that QFI grows with $U$. With realistic energy resolution it becomes capable of witnessing bipartite entanglement above $U=2.5$ (in units of the hopping), where it also changes slope. This point is also proximate to slope changes of the bandwidth $W(U)$ and the half-chain von Neumann entanglement entropy. We compute $G(r,t)$ by Fourier-transforming $S(k,\omega)$. The results indicate a crossover in the short-time short-distance dynamics at low $U$ characterized by ferromagnetic lightcone wavefronts, to a Heisenberg-like behavior at large $U$ featuring antiferromagnetic lightcones and spatially period-doubled antiferromagnetism. We find this crossover has largely been completed by $U=3$. Our results thus provide evidence that, in several aspects, the strong-coupling limit of the Hubbard chain is reached qualitatively already at a relatively modest interaction strength. Single crystal inelastic neutron scattering data contain rich information about the structure and dynamics of a material. Yet the challenge of matching sophisticated theoretical models with large data volumes is compounded by computational complexity and the ill-posed nature of the inverse scattering problem. Here we utilize a novel machine-learning-assisted framework featuring multiple neural network architectures to address this via high-dimensional modeling and numerical methods. A comprehensive data set of diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering measured on the Kitaev material $\alpha-$RuCl$_3$ is processed to extract its Hamiltonian. Semiclassical Landau-Lifshitz dynamics and Monte-Carlo simulations were employed to explore the parameter space of an extended Kitaev-Heisenberg Hamiltonian. A machine-learning-assisted iterative algorithm was developed to map the uncertainty manifold to match experimental data; a non-linear autoencoder used to undertake information compression; and Radial Basis networks utilized as fast surrogates for diffraction and dynamics simulations to predict potential spin Hamiltonians with uncertainty. Exact diagonalization calculations were employed to assess the impact of quantum fluctuations on the selected parameters around the best prediction., Comment: 22 pages, 18 figures

We propose a continuous variable quantum state tomography protocol of electrons which result from the ionization of atoms or molecules by the absorption of extreme ultraviolet light pulses. Our protocol is benchmarked against a direct calculation of the quantum state of photoelectrons ejected from helium and argon in the vicinity of a Fano resonance. In the latter case, we furthermore distill ion-photoelectron entanglement due to spin-orbit splitting. This opens new routes towards the investigation of quantum coherence and entanglement properties on the ultrafast timescale.

Traditional spectroscopy, by its very nature, characterizes properties of physical systems in the momentum and frequency domains. The most interesting and potentially practically useful quantum many-body effects however emerge from the deep composition of local, short-time correlations. Here, using inelastic neutron scattering and methods of integrability, we experimentally observe and theoretically describe a local, coherent, long-lived, quasiperiodically oscillating magnetic state emerging out of the distillation of propagating excitations following a local quantum quench in a Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain. This "quantum wake" displays similarities to Floquet states, discrete time crystals and nonlinear Luttinger liquids., Comment: 7 pages 4 figures, with 4 pages supplemental information

Quantum coherence plays a fundamental role in the study and control of ultrafast dynamics in matter. In the case of photoionization, entanglement of the photoelectron with the ion is a well known source of decoherence when only one of the particles is measured. Here we investigate decoherence due to entanglement of the radial and angular degrees of freedom of the photoelectron. We study two-photon ionization via the 2s2p autoionizing state in He using high spectral resolution photoelectron interferometry. Combining experiment and theory, we show that the strong dipole coupling of the 2s2p and 2p$^2$ states results in the entanglement of the angular and radial degrees of freedom. This translates, in angle integrated measurements, into a dynamic loss of coherence during autoionization.

We investigate the magnetic excitations of elemental gadolinium (Gd) using inelastic neutron scattering, showing that Gd is a Dirac magnon material with nodal lines at $K$ and nodal planes at half integer $\ell$. We find an anisotropic intensity winding around the $K$-point Dirac magnon cone, which is interpreted to indicate Berry phase physics. Using linear spin wave theory calculations, we show the nodal lines have non-trivial Berry phases, and topological surface modes. We also discuss the origin of the nodal plane in terms of a screw-axis symmetry, and introduce a topological invariant characterizing its presence and effect on the scattering intensity. Together, these results indicate a highly nontrivial topology, which is generic to hexagonal close packed ferromagnets. We present a comprehensive study of the magnetic exchange Hamiltonian of elemental Gadolinium. We use neutron scattering to measure the magnon spectrum over the entire Brillouin zone, and fit the excitations to a spin wave model to extract the first 26 nearest neighbor magnetic exchange interactions with rigorously defined uncertainty. We find these exchange interactions to follow RKKY behavior, oscillating from ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic as a function of distance. Finally, we discuss the topological features and degeneracies in Gd, and HCP ferromagnets in general. We show theoretically how, with asymmetric exchange, topological properties could be tuned with a magnetic field., Comment: 6 pages, 10 figures, 5 pages appendices. We demonstrate how quantum entanglement can be directly witnessed in the quasi-1D Heisenberg antiferromagnet KCuF$_3$. We apply three entanglement witnesses --- one-tangle, two-tangle, and quantum Fisher information --- to its inelastic neutron spectrum, and compare with spectra simulated by finite-temperature density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and classical Monte Carlo methods. We find that each witness provides direct access to entanglement. Of these, quantum Fisher information is the most robust experimentally, and indicates the presence of at least bipartite entanglement up to at least 50 K, corresponding to around 10% of the spinon zone-boundary energy. We apply quantum Fisher information to higher spin-S Heisenberg chains, and show theoretically that the witnessable entanglement gets suppressed to lower temperatures as the quantum number increases. The lack of methods to experimentally detect and quantify entanglement in quantum matter impedes our ability to identify materials hosting highly entangled phases, such as quantum spin liquids. We thus investigate the feasibility of using inelastic neutron scattering (INS) to implement a model-independent measurement protocol for entanglement based on three entanglement witnesses: one-tangle, two-tangle, and quantum Fisher information (QFI). We perform high-resolution INS measurements on Cs$_2$CoCl$_4$, a close realization of the $S=1/2$ transverse-field XXZ spin chain, where we can control entanglement using the magnetic field, and compare with density-matrix renormalization group calculations for validation. The three witnesses allow us to infer entanglement properties and make deductions about the quantum state in the material. We find QFI to be a particularly robust experimental probe of entanglement, whereas the one- and two-tangles require more careful analysis. Using a spectrally resolved electron interferometry technique, we measure photoionization time delays between the $3s$ and $3p$ subshells of argon over a large 34-eV energy range covering the Cooper minima in both subshells. The observed strong variations of the $3s-3p$ delay difference, including a sign change, are well reproduced by theoretical calculations using the Two-Photon Two-Color Random Phase Approximation with Exchange. Strong shake-up channels lead to photoelectrons spectrally overlapping with those emitted from the $3s$ subshell. These channels need to be included in our analysis to reproduce the experimental data. Our measurements provide a stringent test for multielectronic theoretical models aiming at an accurate description of inter-channel correlation.

Operator square-roots are ubiquitous in theoretical physics. They appear, for example, in the Holstein-Primakoff representation of spin operators and in the Klein-Gordon equation. Often the use of a perturbative expansion is the only recourse when dealing with them. In this work we show that under certain conditions differential equations can be derived which can be used to find perturbatively inaccessible approximations to operator square-roots. Specifically, for the number operator $\hat n=\hat a^\dag a$ we show that the square-root $\sqrt{\hat n}$ near $\hat n=0$ can be approximated by a polynomial in $\hat n$. This result is unexpected because a Taylor expansion fails. A polynomial expression in $\hat n$ is possible because $\hat n$ is an operator, and its constituents $a$ and $a^\dag$ have a non-trivial commutator $[a,a^\dag]=1$ and do not behave as scalars. We apply our approach to the zero mass Klein-Gordon Hamiltonian in a constant magnetic field, and as a main application, the Holstein-Primakoff representation of spin operators, where we are able to find new expressions that are polynomial in bosonic operators. We prove that these new expressions exactly reproduce spin operators. Our expressions are manifestly Hermitian, which offer an advantage over other methods, such as the Dyson-Maleev representation.

The photoionization of xenon atoms in the 70-100 eV range reveals several fascinating physical phenomena such as a giant resonance induced by the dynamic rearrangement of the electron cloud after photon absorption, an anomalous branching ratio between intermediate Xe$^+$ states separated by the spin-orbit interaction and multiple Auger decay processes. These phenomena have been studied in the past, using in particular synchrotron radiation, but without access to real-time dynamics. Here, we study the dynamics of Xe 4d photoionization on its natural time scale combining attosecond interferometry and coincidence spectroscopy. A time-frequency analysis of the involved transitions allows us to identify two interfering ionization mechanisms: the broad giant dipole resonance with a fast decay time less than 50 as and a narrow resonance at threshold induced by spin-flip transitions, with much longer decay times of several hundred as. Our results provide new insight into the complex electron-spin dynamics of photo-induced phenomena.

The magnetic excitation spectrum of the quantum magnet YbCl$_3$ is studied with inelastic neutron scattering. The spectrum exhibits an unusually sharp feature within a broad continuum, as well as conventional spin waves. By including both transverse and longitudinal channels of the neutron response, linear spin wave theory with a single Heisenberg interaction on the honeycomb lattice reproduces all of the key features in the spectrum. In particular, the broad continuum corresponds to a two-magnon contribution from the longitudinal channel, while the sharp feature within this continuum is identified as a Van Hove singularity in the joint density of states, which indicates the two-dimensional nature of the two-magnon continuum. We term these singularities magneto-caustic features in analogy with caustic features in ray optics where focused envelopes of light are generated when light passes through or reflects from curved or distorted surfaces. The experimental demonstration of a sharp Van Hove singularity in a two-magnon continuum is important because analogous features in potential two-spinon continua could distinguish quantum spin liquids from merely disordered systems. These results establish YbCl$_3$ as a nearly ideal two-dimensional honeycomb lattice material hosting strong quantum effects in the unfrustrated limit., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures
