This was the inaugural edition of a festival that I founded, led/directed, curated and produced. Also known as the #r3fest, this was a hybrid programme examining running as an arts and humanities discourse, not just within sport science or as a fitness practice. This fills an existing gap within and beyond the academy. Thus far, RUN! RUN! RUN! has presented the drawings, installations, performances, papers, academic posters and films of 65 researchers, artists and runners from 40 institutions, across venues including Cardiff National Indoor Stadium and Paris School of Culture and Art. Through RUN! RUN! RUN!, which the Guardian urges other academics to 'take a leaf from' (2014), I am recognised as being 'absolutely central' in the field of 'Running Studies' (Whelan 2015). For #r3fest 2014, I approached Alan Latham, a geographer from University College London, to be Co-Director, and artist/Slade Director Jo Volley as co-host. Funded by University College London and the Arts and Humanities Research Council, the one-day event took place at the Slade Research Centre, and was attended by 50 artists, academics and community leaders from 30 institutions and including the Universities of Harvard and Oxford, Goodgym and the Sri Chimnoy Centre. Disciplines were jumbled up to generate lively, productive antagonisms (Latham and Tan 2016), practice was mixed with research, and cultural and academic hierarchies and boundaries irritated. e usual presentations aside, there were quick- re, 8-min speaking slots that we timed with a stopwatch. Object-based learning activities were also programmed in, as paleo-anthropologists brought samples illustrating anatomical parts of the human runner for participants to explore. Academic posters, such as one on the biomechanics of running, were juxtaposed with commissioned artworks, such as Volley's drawing of a map of her run at Hampstead Heath (Figure 3). Key Thinkers on Cities provides an engaging introduction to the dynamic intellectual field of urban studies. Notably, the book also includes a range of thinkers who have more recently begun to shape the study of cities through engagements with art, architecture, computer modelling, ethnography, public health, post-colonial theory and more. With an introduction that provides a mapping of the current transdisciplinary field, and individual entries by those currently involved in cutting edge urban research in the Global North and South, this book promises to be an essential text for anyone interested in the study of cities and urban life. It will be of use to those in the fields of anthropology, economics, geography, sociology and urban planning.

Through artist-led creative interfaces and initiatives, what new insights arise, regarding participation, audience and place to promote public health and enrich existing understanding of wellbeing? RIGOUR, ORIGINALITY: Also known as the #antiadultrun, this was a series of masterclasses run by experts aged 7-14 to teach adults (top age 82) how to re-claim fun and be ‘old children’, like the Chinese Daoist philosopher Lao Zi (literally ‘old child’, 500BCE). The workshops draw on my research since 2009 on the ‘gentle anarchism’ of Lao Zi, and the Situationists’ notion of the revolution of everyday life, and the childlike and subversive qualities of running. Commissioned by the annual ANTI Festival of Contemporary Arts, this was held in Kuopio Finland, September 2015, which also featured at the festival was acclaimed live artist Heather Cassils. Around 40 participants enjoyed the 5 masterclasses that took place at a local stadium (before the Kuopio Annual Marathon kicked off), and the Kuopio Market Square in Finland. The ‘Masters’ were recruited from a local school, and the artwork was co-developed from 2-days/4 hours of workshops. I invited geographer Dr Alan Latham (UCL Senior Lecturer) to work on this with me. The establishment of the New Zealand whitegoods industry was largely a product of the regime of accumulation which solidified out of a series of structural reforms set in place during the late 1930s and 1940s. Central to the regime, which flourished from the 1950s through to the early 1970s, was the expansion of a highly protected, import substituting, manufacturing sector supported by an internationally competitive and technologically dynamic agricultural sector. Throughout this period the whitegoods industry mimicked the fordist technological and competitive principles of North American and Western European whitegoods manufacturers. This pattern of development saw the level of technological sophistication and concentration within the industry increase steadily throughout the 1950s and 1960s. The late 1970s and early 1980s saw the post-war regime of accumulation slide into an endemic state of crisis. This triggered a wide-ranging dismantling of the institutional matrix which had structured the post-war economy, in the hope that by allowing capital the freedom to do as it will New Zealand would move on to a new, sustainable, growth path. The success of these reforms remains to be seen. They have, however, greatly altered the competitive environment within which the whitegoods industry has been operating – increasing the volatility of the local market and exposing the industry to international competition. This has led to the withdrawal from the industry of all but two of the companies which survived into the 1980s. Through the development of a range of technological and organisational innovations which transcend the limitations which fordist production systems place on companies which produce only on a small scale, one company (Fisher and Paykel) has managed not only to continue to dominate the local whitegoods market, but also to expand into international markets. Contemporary cities are thick with infrastructure. In recognition of this fact a great deal of recent work within urban studies and urban geography has focused on transformations in the governance and ownership of infrastructural elements within cities. Less attention has been paid to the practices through which urban infrastructures are inhabited by urban dwellers. Yet in all sorts of ways infrastructures are realised through their use and inhabitation. This paper argues for the importance of attending to the ways that infrastructures are reinterpreted through use. Focusing on a case study of commuter cyclists in London, it explores the ways in which cyclists accommodate themselves to (and are in turn accommodated by) the infrastructural orderings of London’s streets. Confronted by the obduracy of a road infrastructure designed primarily for motorised traffic, cyclists show a diverse range of approaches to negotiating movement through the city on bikes. The paper describes how this negotiation can be understood in terms of the more or less skilful processes of navigation, rule following, rule making, and rule bending. This involves a polymorphous mix of practices, some common to driving, others to walking, and yet others unique to cycling. In conclusion, the paper suggests that transformations of infrastructures found within cities need to be understood as much through emergent changes between their elements, and that close attention to how infrastructures come to be inhabited offers productive avenues for thinking about ways to improve them.
