In this letter we discuss the operator product expansion of scalar operators in five-dimensional field theories with an $SU(1,3)\times U(1)$ spacetime symmetry. Such theories arise by a novel conformal null reduction of six-dimensional Lorentzian conformal field theories. Unlike Lorentzian conformal field theories, three-point functions of generic operators in such theories are not completely fixed by $SU(1,3)\times U(1)$ symmetry. However, we show that in a special case the functional form of the OPE coefficients can be fully determined, and we use them to fix the form of the three-point function. The result is shown to agree with correlation functions obtained by reduction of six-dimensional conformal field theories., Comment: 17 pages, Typo corrected and some further clarifications. Optical frequency combs emit narrow pulses of light with a stable repetition rate. Equivalently, the generated light spectrum consists of many discrete frequencies spaced by this same repetition rate. These precision light sources have become ubiquitous in applications of photonic technologies because they allow coherent sampling over a broad part of the optical spectrum. The addition of another comb, with a slightly different line spacing, results in a dual comb. Widely used in spectroscopy, dual combs allow one to read out the broad frequency response of a sample in a simple electronic measurement. Many dual comb applications require a high level of mutual coherence between the combs, but achieving this stability can be demanding. Here, by exploiting the rich structure of the nonlinear electro-optic tensor in lithium niobate, we generate ultra-stable dual combs with the two combs naturally having orthogonal polarizations. Our combs have relative linewidths down to 400 microhertz, and require no stabilization or post-processing methods. The ultra-high stability of the spectrum emitted by our device, along with its simplicity of operation and energy efficiency, offer a route to the deployment of robust and versatile dual comb sources., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

We explore various geometrical aspects of an action for six-dimensional chiral 2-forms based on the formalism of 1903.12196. We elucidate the coupling to general backgrounds and construct the full supersymmetric completion to an abelian (2,0) superconformal lagrangian including matter. We investigate the non-standard diffeomorphism properties of the fields and their relation to the hamiltonian formulation. We also test the action by considering compactifications on a circle, K3 and a Riemann surface. We use an artificial neural network to analyze asymmetric noisy random telegraph signals (RTSs), and extract underlying transition rates. We demonstrate that a long short-term memory neural network can vastly outperform conventional methods, particularly for noisy signals. Our technique gives reliable results as the signal-to-noise ratio approaches one, and over a wide range of underlying transition rates. We apply our method to random telegraph signals generated by a superconducting double dot based photon detector, allowing us to extend our measurement of quasiparticle dynamics to new temperature regimes., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

We experimentally identify the magnetostatic modes active for Brillouin light scattering in the optical whispering gallery modes of a yttrium iron garnet sphere. Each mode is identified by magnetic field dispersion of ferromagnetic-resonance spectroscopy and coupling strength to the known field distribution of the microwave drive antenna. Our optical measurements confirm recent predictions that higher-order magnetostatic modes can also generate optical scattering, according to the selection rules derived from the axial symmetry. From this we summarize the selection rules for Brillouin light scattering. We give experimental evidence that the optomagnonic coupling to non-uniform magnons can be higher than that of the uniform Kittel mode., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

We increase the isolation of a superconducting double dot from its environment by galvanically isolating it from any electrodes. We probe it using high frequency reflectometry techniques, find 2e-periodic behaviour, and characterise the energy structure of its charge states. By modelling the response of the device, we determine the quasiparticle poisoning rate to be significantly worse than that of a unisolated double dot, and conclude that quasiparticle exchange between the dot and the leads is an important relaxation mechanism., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

We demonstrate that yttrium iron garnet microspheres support optical whispering gallery modes similar to those in non-magnetic dielectric materials. The direction of the ferromagnetic moment tunes both the resonant frequency via the Voigt effect as well as the degree of polarization rotation via the Faraday effect. An understanding of the magneto-optical coupling in whispering gallery modes, where the propagation direction rotates with respect to the magnetization, is fundamental to the emerging field of cavity optomagnonics., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We demonstrate the long range strong coupling of magnetostatic modes in spatially separated ferromagnets mediated by a microwave frequency cavity. Two spheres of yttrium iron garnet are embedded in the cavity and their magnetostatic modes probed using a dispersive measurement technique. We find they are strongly coupled to each other even when detuned from the cavity modes. We investigate the dependence of the magnet-magnet coupling on the cavity detuning $\Delta$, and find a $1/\Delta$ dependence also characteristic of cavity-coupled superconducting qubits. Dark states of the coupled magnetostatic modes of the system are observed, and ascribed to mismatches between the symmetries of the modes and the drive field., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

We demonstrate the dispersive measurement of ferromagnetic resonance in a yttrium iron garnet sphere embedded within a microwave cavity. The reduction in the longitudinal magnetization at resonance is measured as a frequency shift in the cavity mode coupled to the sphere. This measurement is a result of the intrinsic non-linearity in magnetization dynamics, indicating a promising route towards experiments in magnon cavity quantum electro-dynamics., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

We demonstrate, at room temperature, the strong coupling of the fundamental and non-uniform magnetostatic modes of an yttrium iron garnet (YIG) ferrimagnetic sphere to the electromagnetic modes of a co-axial cavity. The well-defined field profile within the cavity yields a specific coupling strength for each magnetostatic mode. We experimentally measure the coupling strength for the different magnetostatic modes and, by calculating the expected coupling strengths, are able to identify the modes themselves., Comment: 9 Pages, 3 figures, 1 table

We discuss instanton operators in five-dimensional gauge theories. These are defined as disorder operators which create a non-vanishing second Chern class on a four-sphere surrounding their insertion point. As such they may be thought of as higher-dimensional analogues of three-dimensional monopole (or `t Hooft) operators. We consider the energetics of a superconducting double dot, comprising two superconducting islands coupled in series via a Josephson junction. The periodicity of the stability diagram is governed by the competition between the charging energy and the superconducting gap, and the stability of each charge state depends upon its parity. We consider the maximal super-Yang-Mills theory in 5 Euclidean dimensions with SO(5) R-symmetry and 16 supersymmetries. We argue that the strong coupling limit of this theory (with a possible UV completion) has an emergent time dimension and gives a description of the 5+1 dimensional Lorentz invariant (2,0) theory of the M5-brane, compactified on a timelike circle with radius R=g^2/4\pi^2 . The single-mode Dicke model is well-known to undergo a quantum phase transition from the so-called normal phase to the supperradiant phase (hereinafter called the "superradiant quantum phase transition"). Normally, quantum phase transitions are closely related to the critical behavior of quantities such as entanglement, quantum fluctuations, and fidelity. In this paper, we study quantum Fisher information (QFI) of the field mode and that of the atoms in the ground state of the Dicke Hamiltonian. For finite and large enough number of atoms, our numerical results show that near the critical atom-field coupling, the QFIs of the atomic and the field subsystems can surpass the classical limits, due to the appearance of nonclassical squeezed states. As the coupling increases far beyond the critical point, the two subsystems are in highly mixed states, which degrade the QFI and hence the ultimate phase sensitivity. In the thermodynamic limit, we present analytical results of the QFIs and their relationships with the reduced variances. For each subsystem, we find that there is a singularity in the derivative of the QFI at the critical point, a clear signature of quantum criticality in the Dicke model., Comment: 7.8 pages, 3 figures, typing errors are fixed and new references are added

A metallic double-dot is measured with radio frequency reflectometry. Changes in the total electron number of the double-dot are determined via single electron tunnelling contributions to the complex electrical impedance. We measure an aluminum superconducting double quantum dot and find that its electrical impedance, specifically its quantum capacitance, depends on whether or not it contains a single broken Cooper pair. In this way we are able to observe, in real time, the thermally activated breaking and recombination of Cooper pairs. We examine the relationships between three proposals for the six-dimensional (2,0) theory: the DLCQ of hep-th/9707079, hep-th/9712117, the deconstruction prescription of hep-th/0110146, and the five-dimensional maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills proposal of 1012.2880, 1012.2882. We show that hep-th/0110146 gives a deconstruction of five-dimensional maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills. The proposal of hep-th/9707079, hep-th/9712117 uses a subset of the degrees of freedom of five-dimensional Yang-Mills and we show that compactification of it on a circle of finite radius agrees with the DLCQ arising from the proposal of 1012.2880, 1012.2882 or from the deconstruction proposal of hep-th/0110146., Comment: 29 pages, Latex; v2: substantial rewording and additional explanations

In the presence of a background supergravity flux, N M2-branes will expand via the Myers effect into M5-branes wrapped on a fuzzy three-sphere. In previous work the fluctuations of the M2-branes were shown to be described by the five-dimensional Yang-Mills gauge theory associated to D4-branes. Magnetically coupling a nano-mechanical resonator to a double quantum dot confining two electrons can enable the manipulation of a single electron spin and the readout of the resonator's natural frequency. When the Larmor frequency matches the resonator frequency, the electron spin in one of the dots can be selectively flipped by the magnetised resonator. By simultaneously measuring the charge state of the two-electron double quantum dots, this transition can be detected thus enabling the natural frequency of the mechanical resonator to be determined., Comment: 7 pages, fixed typos, updated figures 4 and 5

We study charge entanglement in two Coulomb-coupled double quantum dots in thermal equilibrium and under stationary non-equilibrium transport conditions. In the transport regime, the entanglement exhibits a clear switching threshold and various limits due to suppression of tunneling by Quantum Zeno localisation or by an interaction induced energy gap. We also calculate quantum noise spectra and discuss the inter-dot current correlation as an indicator of the entanglement in transport experiments., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We investigate the entanglement properties of an ensemble of atoms interacting with a single bosonic field mode via the Dicke (superradiance) Hamiltonian. The model exhibits a quantum phase transition and a well-understood thermodynamic limit, allowing the identification of both quantum and semi-classical many-body features in the behaviour of the entanglement. We consider the entanglement between the atoms and the field, an investigation initiated in [N. Lambert, C. Emary and T. Brandes, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 92}, %073602 (2004)]. We utilise the duality between M theory and Type IIA string theory to show the existence of Freund-Rubin compactifications of M theory on 7-manifolds with singularities supporting chiral fermions. We investigate the transport and coherence properties of a double quantum dot coupled to a single damped boson mode. Our numerically results reveal how the properties of the boson distribution can be steered by altering parameters of the electronic system such as the energy difference between the dots. We discuss the worldvolume description of intersecting D-branes, including the metric on the moduli space of deformations. We impose a choice of static gauge that treats all the branes on an equal footing and describes the intersection of D-branes as an embedded special Lagrangian three-surface. Some explicit solutions to these equations are given and their interpretation in terms of a superpotential on moduli space is discussed. These surfaces arise from flat direction of a non-Abelian superpotential and imply the existance of non-compact G_2 manifolds., Comment: References added

Recently effective actions have been extensively used to describe tachyon condensation in string theory. While the various effective actions which have appeared in the literature have very similar properties for static configurations, they differ for time-dependent tachyons. In this paper we discuss general properties of non-linear effective Lagrangians which are first order in derivatives. In particular we show that some observed properties, such as asymptotically vanishing pressure, are rather generic features, although the quantative features differ. On the other hand we argue that certain features of marginal tachyon profiles are beyond the reach of any first order Lagrangian description. We discuss the low energy effective action for the Bosonic and Fermionic zero-modes of a smooth BPS Randall-Sundrum domain wall, including the induced supergravity on the wall. The result is a pure supergravity in one lower dimension. We discuss the dimensional reduction of various effective actions, particularly that of the closed Bosonic string and pure gravity, to two and three dimensions. The result for the closed Bosonic string leads to coset symmetries which are in agreement with those recently predicted and argued to be present in a new unreduced formulation of this theory. We also show that part of the Geroch group appears in the unreduced duality symmetric formulation of gravity recently proposed. We conjecture that this formulation can be extended to a non-linear realisation based on a Kac-Moody algebra which we identify. We reconstruct the tachyon effective action for unstable D-branes in superstring theory by examining its behaviour near exactly marginal deformations, where the ambigous higher derivative terms can be eliminated. We then compare this action with that obtained in boundary string field theory and find remarkable agreement. In particular, the tension for lower dimensional branes and the BI-action for the centre of mass motion are reprodued exactly. We discuss the interactions of Goldstone particles with solitonic states. We observe that, contrary to the familiar situation in the vacuum sector, the Goldstone particles can have non-derivative interactions with the solitons. This result is applied to brane physics and in particular leads to the possibility that neutrinos in brane world scenarios are Goldstone particles for broken supersymmetry., Comment: 28 pages, phyzzx

We calculate the string loop corrections to the tachyon potential for stable non-BPS Dp-branes on the orbifold T^4/Z_2. We find a non-trivial phase structure and we show that, after tachyon condensation, the non-BPS Dp-branes are attracted to each other for p=0,1,2. We then identify the corresponding closed string boundary states together with the massless long range fields they excite. For p=3,4 the string loop correction diverge. We identify the massless closed string fields responsible for these divergencies and regularise the partition function using a Fischler-Susskind mechanism., Comment: References added and some minor corrections

In this talk we will discuss the low energy dynamics of non-BPS branes constructed as stable brane/anti-brane pairs at an orbifold. In particular we will determine the effective field theory and compare its predictions with those of the full open string theory. While the position and vector degrees of freedom have the familiar form found in supersymmetric gauge theories, the massless modes orginating in the tachyonic sector display novel non-commuting flat directions. The non-abelian flat directions in the tachyon potential of stable non-BPS branes recently found are shown to persist to all orders in alpha' at tree level in the string coupling. We also obtain the non-abelian Born-Infeld action including the tachyon potential for a stack of stable non-BPS branes on a critical orbifold. We discuss the existance of smooth soliton solutions which interpolate between supersymmetric vacua in odd-dimensional theories. In particular we apply this analysis to a wide class of supergravities to argue against the existence of smooth domain walls interpolating between supersymmetric vacua.
