The basic tribological experiments have reported that nano-graphene lubricating oil has excellent anti-friction and anti-wear properties, which has been widely concerned. However, the real anti-friction effect of nano-graphene lubricating oil and its impact on engine power performance, economic performance and emission performance remain to be proved. This has seriously hindered the popularization and application of nano-graphene lubricating oil in the engine field. In this paper, nano-graphene powder was chemically grafted to prepare nano-graphene lubricating oil with high dispersion stability. The influence of nano-graphene on physicochemical properties of lubricating oil was studied, and the influence of nano-graphene on engine power performance, economic performance and emission performance was explored. The results show that after modification, the dispersion of nano-graphene in lubricating oil is improved. Compared with pure lubricating oil, the addition of nano-graphene makes the kinematic viscosity of lubricating oil slightly lower, and has little effect on the density, flash point, pour point and total acid value of lubricating oil. The reversed towing torque of nano-graphene lubricating oil is reduced by 1.82–5.53%, indicating that the friction loss decreases. The specific fuel consumption of the engine is reduced, which indicates that the fuel economic performance is improved. Engine HC+NOX, CH4, CO2 emissions do not change much, but particulate matter (PM) emissions increase by 8.85%. The quantity concentration of nuclear particles, accumulated particles and total particles of nano-graphene lubricating oil are significantly higher than that of pure lubricating oil. And the increase of the quantity concentration of accumulated particles is more obvious than that of nuclear particles, and the larger the load, the more obvious this phenomenon. In order to apply nano-graphene lubricating oil to the engine, it is also necessary to further study its impact on the post-processing system, adjust the control strategy of the post-processing system and then test and calibrate. This work focuses on the evolution of lubrication wedge shaping in internal combustion piston engines, taking into account liquid microflows on curved surfaces and coating microgeometries. It introduces a new approach to the analysis of friction losses by simulating the microflow of lubricating oil between the surfaces of piston rings cooperating with the cylinder surface. The models used take into account three types of microgeometry and material expansion. Key results indicate that microirregularities with a stereometry of 0.1–0.2 µm significantly influence the distribution of oil film thickness in the phase of maximum working pressure, which is critical for the functioning of the seal ring. The innovation of the work consists of demonstrating that, despite small changes in the friction force and power in the piston rings, changes in the minimum values of the oil film thickness are significant. The work highlights the failure to take into account microgeometry parameters in friction models, which leads to significant errors in the simulation results, especially in terms of oil film continuity and the contribution of mixed friction. The simulations also indicate that advanced geometric models with high mesh resolution are necessary only for the assessment of changes in oil film thickness during the highest pressure increase in the combustion chamber and taking into account various mixed friction conditions. The results suggest significant progress in engine design and performance, confirming the importance of advanced fluid and mixed friction models in piston engine lubrication research. This study focuses on the development of adsorptive materials to retain degraded 5w40 motor oil. The materials were prepared using xanthan (XG) and XG esterified with acrylic acid (XGAC) as the polymeric matrix. LignoBoost lignin (LB), LB esterified with oleic (LBOL), stearic acid (LBST) and montmorillonite (CL) were added into XG and XGAC matrices to obtain the adsorbents. Adsorption experiments revealed that XG/CL/LBOL had the highest adsorption capacity at 46.80 g/g, followed by XGAC/CL at 45.73 g/g, and XG/CL at 37.58 g/g. The kinetic studies, employing the pseudo-second-order (PSO) model, indicated rapid sorption rates with a good correlation to experimental data. FTIR spectra analysis have evidenced the physical nature of adsorption process, involving interactions such as hydrogen bonding, van der Waals forces, and π–π interactions. Equilibrium data fitting to the Henry, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherm models showed that the adsorption occurs within materials diverse pore structures, enhancing oil retention. Structural parameters like density, porosity, and surface area were pivotal, with XG/CL/LBOL showing the most favorable properties for high oil adsorption. Additionally, it was found that the adsorption efficiency was influenced by the material's morphology and the presence of chemical modifications. This comprehensive evaluation highlights the potential of these novel adsorptive materials for environmental remediation applications, offering an efficient and sustainable approach to reducing degraded motor oil pollution. This paper investigates the performance of a novel viscous passive damping solution to mitigate the chatter vibrations issue in the context of turning thin-walled cylindrical shell components for aerospace and other industries. This study involves the use of two different viscous fluids, motor oil and silicone oil, which have viscosities of 102 cSt and 350 cSt, respectively, to fill the in-house developed tube components with the aim of improving machining performance. Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) graphs were studied for chatter analysis, and surface roughness parameters such as average surface roughness (Ra) and mean roughness depth (Rz) were considered for studying the effectiveness of the viscous damping fluids. The results obtained with viscous damping were then compared with an undamped/unfilled tube with the same geometry. The cutting experiments showed that the motor oil reduced the excessive vibrations while silicone oil was able to eliminate them. For the tube with motor oil, the magnitude of the process sound at chatter frequency was reduced by 6.6 times as compared to an unfilled tube, whereas for the tube with silicone oil, the amplitude at chatter frequency was reduced by 14.8 times. Moreover, the surface quality of the tubes with motor oil and silicone oil shows almost equal improvement, indicating the need for future research on the type and amount of viscous fluids for implementing the concept in real cases. Durability and reliability have been studied for decades through intensive trial-error experimentation. However, there are numerous fields of application where the costs associated with this approach are not acceptable. In lubricated machines with severe dynamic loads, such as high-power-density engines, simulation tools offer clear advantages over intensive testing. Prototypes and multiple scenarios can be cost-effectively simulated to assess different lubricants and engine configurations. The work presented here details the study of wear based on a validated elastohydrodynamic (EHD) simulation model of the connecting rod journal bearing. This model accounts for elastic deformation through a connecting rod finite element model (FEM). In addition, multiple lubricant rheological and tribological dependences, determined by specific experimental tests, are applied in the model through their interaction with the simulation software. Correspondingly, a novel wear algorithm is proposed to predict wear depth over time evolution along a proposed wear cycle based on the typical working ranges of high-performance engines. A final assessment is presented to compare 4 different ultralow-viscosity lubricants in their protective performance under severe conditions. The results show the evolution of the wear load and wear depth over the wear cycle. This evaluation is key to describing a lubricant selection procedure for high-power-density engines. Oil monitoring plays an important role in early maintenance of mechanical equipment on account of the fact that lubricating oil contains a large amount of wear information. However, due to extreme industrial environment and long-term service, the data history and the sample size of lubricating oil are very limited. Therefore, to address problems due to a lack of oil samples, this paper proposes a new prediction strategy that fuses the domain shifts with uncertainty (DSU) method and long short-term memory (LSTM) method. The proposed DSU-LSTM model combines the advantages of the DSU model, such as increasing data diversity and uncertainty, reducing the impact of independent or identical domains on neural network training, and mitigating domain changes between different oil data histories, with the advantages of LSTM in predicting time series, thereby improving prediction capability. To validate the proposed method, a case study with real lubricating oil data is conducted, and comparisons are given by calculating the root-mean-square error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE), and mean relative error (MRE) with LSTM, support vector machine (SVM), and DSU-SVM models. The lubricating oil system is a significant component of aviation engine lubrication and cooling, and the scavenge pipe is an essential component of the lubricating oil system. Accurately identifying and understanding the flow state of the scavenge pipe is very important. This article establishes a visualization test bench for a 45-degree inclined scavenge pipe, with upward and downward flow directions, respectively. The test temperature is 370 K, and a high-speed camera captures the changes in the two-phase flow inside the pipeline. Based on high-speed photography photos, we develop software for analyzing the flow characteristics of bubbles inside the tube and explore the influence of gas phase conversion velocity and liquid phase conversion velocity on the apparent velocity of bubbles inside the tube. Multiple algorithms were used to develop the model by combining machine learning with speed and accuracy to establish a data regression prediction model for the apparent velocity of bubbles inside the tube. Through calculation and analysis, it was found that the root mean square error of the prediction model using the BP neural network algorithm was the lowest, and the decision coefficient of the prediction model using the support vector machine algorithm was the highest. This work describes the production of a novel biosurfactant produced by the bacterium Bacillus invictae UCP1617 cultivated using an alternative substrate and its use in the formulation of an eco‐friendly detergent. A factorial design was used to optimize agitation, temperature, and inoculum size in a mineral medium containing 1.5% corn steep liquor in 100‐mL shake flasks. The best conditions (175 rpm, 28°C, and 4% inoculum) were used to scale up biosurfactant production in a 50‐L bioreactor. Surface tension of the fermentation medium decreased from 69.5 to 30.2 mN/m within 72 h. The biosurfactant exhibited a critical micelle concentration (CMC) of 0.900 ± 0.08 g/L. The biosurfactant formed stable oil‐in‐water emulsions of motor oil and petroleum, achieving emulsification indices of 90.80% and 99.00%, respectively. An eco‐friendly detergent was formed that included biosurfactant at several different concentrations, 0.2 (wt) % hydroxyethyl cellulose and 0.2% potassium sorbate. The detergent remained stable under extreme conditions of pH, temperature, and salinity when stored for 90 days. The detergent was nontoxic to cabbage, cherry tomato plants, and the microcrustacean Artemia salina. A detergent formulation containing biosurfactant at the CMC completely dispersed motor oil in seawater at a 1:1 surfactant/oil (vol/vol) ratio and removed 99.21% of motor oil (20 mL) contained in 60 g of clayey soil. The detergent removed 98.42% of the oil adhered to a glass surface and removed 75.00% of motor oil adsorbed to a porous surface. Diesel engines commonly suffer from oil contamination by fuel and other chemicals during operation and maintenance. This contamination alters the oil's lubricating properties, leading to increased wear, corrosion, and other potential problems. Therefore, it is crucial to understand how oil degrades and becomes contaminated due to different replacement strategies is crucial for both engine operators and manufacturers. This study focuses on the impact of fuel dilution on specific properties of engine oil under real-world operating conditions in a marine diesel engine. Oil samples were collected regularly from the crankcase of the engine fuel injection pump and tribological tests were performed. These tests aimed to assess how marine gas oil affects the oil lubricity performance and how it maintains its useful life. The use of refined used lubricating oils (RULO) is an opportunity for use for the industrial sector, improving the environment. The objective of the research was to evaluate different RULO/diesel mixtures from the AT80 and AT40C1 treatments. The experiment consisted of applying different proportions of RULO, forming five different mixtures between ALUR/diesel. The mixes were 85/15, 70/30, 55/45, 40/60 and 30/70. The results showed that the best mixtures were M4 and M5 of the AT80 treatment, with average density of 0.80 g/cm3, viscosity of 5.83 cP, electrical stability of 1694.33 V, flash point of 95°C and 96.67% oil. With these results, a new alternative and use is created, reducing diesel and economic costs for the oil industry that prepares oil-based drilling fluids. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The squeeze film damper (SFD) is a damping device that has been widely used in rotating machines. The SFD can effectively suppress rotor vibration and reduce transmitted forces. However, it would cause complex motions of the rotor system under specific operating conditions. This paper investigates the support structure of a high-pressure stage simulated rotor in an aircraft engine. A dynamic model of the SFD considering the effects of inertia and cavitation is established to investigate the influence of structural parameters on the stiffness and damping coefficient of the damper. Subsequently, a finite element model of the Jeffcott rotor–SFD system is developed to explore the effects of the structure parameters of the SFD on the critical speed, mode shapes, and other dynamic characteristics of the Jeffcott rotor–SFD system. Experimental tests are conducted to validate and refine the numerical calculations regarding the dynamic characteristics of the rotor–damper system. The results indicate that there is consistency between numerical simulations and experimental results. Within a certain range, enlarging the width of the damper can significantly increase the magnitude of the pressure distribution of the oil film. However, when the pressure amplitude increases to the saturation vapor pressure of the lubricating oil, the cavitation effect begins to manifest. As the width of the damper increases, both the stiffness coefficient and damping coefficient of the SFD are enhanced. Reusing industrial waste is one of the new tactics being used to fight the dumping of solid waste for environmental protection. In the current work, the waste polyurethane (WPU) was ground to a fine powder and used for reinforcement of devulcanized waste rubber/styrene butadiene rubber (DWR/SBR) blends. DWR/SBR/WPU composites were prepared using (0, 3, 6, 9, 15, 30) phr (parts per hundred of rubber) of WPU. It was hypothesized that the treatment of WPU with trimethylolpropane triacrylate (TMPTMA) and irradiated at 10 kGy would improve its compatibility with the DWR/SBR blend and, consequently, its reinforcement efficacy. The incorporation of 30 phr of treated WPU (TWPU) improved the tensile strength (TS) by 47.7% and 8.6% compared to neat DWR/SBR and composites containing 30 phr of untreated WPU (UWPU). In addition, the incorporation of TWPU improved other mechanical characteristics such as tear strength, hardness, and abrasion resistance. As a result of increasing polarity and cross‐link density within the DWR/SBR blend after the addition of polar WPU, the resistance to motor oil was improved. The outcomes are encouraging from the standpoint of the circular economy and help produce high‐performing, reasonably priced DWR/SBR composites for a range of industrial uses, especially in the floor tiles application. Enhancing lubrication across various tribological systems in the maritime industry is essential for improving safety, efficiency, and environmental sustainability. Al2O3 nanoparticles, employed as additives in lubricating oils, demonstrate favorable tribological properties including anti-wear and anti-friction characteristics. In this work, nano-scale γ-Al2O3 particles with different shapes, i.e., nanosheet, nanorod, nanosphere, and irregular-shaped nanoparticles, were prepared and calcinated forming the same crystalline phase with nanoscale size, which dispersed well in lubricating oil. The tribological properties of Al2O3 nanoparticles as lubricating oil additives were examined using block-on-ring wear tests, and the effects of the particle shape and particle concentration were investigated. The results indicated that the frictional properties are largely influenced by the particle shape and the concentration of the Al2O3 additives, with the optimal concentration being around 0.1 wt% for each shape. The lubricating oil with nanosheet additives presented the best tribological performance, followed by those with nanorod, nanosphere, and irregular-shaped Al2O3 nanoparticle additives. Al2O3 nanosheets as the lubricating oil additives reduced the stress effect on the friction surface because of their larger bearing area and are inter-particle-sheared during sliding due to the movement of friction pairs, which can further improve the tribological properties compared to other shapes. In this paper, a semi-analytical calculation model for the coefficient of friction (COF) of single spherical protrusions is presented. It allows the prediction of the deformative friction part (μdef) and adhesive friction part (μadh) of the friction pairings steel ∣ polyethylene with ultra-high molecular weight (PE-UHMW) and polyoxymethylene (POM) ∣ PE-UHMW. The experimental studies included unlubricated friction tests, which served to determine the total COF (μtot), as well as tests being lubricated with silicone oil, from which μdef is obtained. Based on the verification tests, it could be shown that both states of lubrication result in the same deformation and that the relationship between the rear angle (ω) and μdef postulated in the calculation model is valid. Therefore, friction tests with segmented spheres were carried out, which allow a specific variation of the ω. It can be concluded that for both pairings the μdef is generally of minor significance (approx. 1/3 μtot) and the influence of the μadh predominates (approx. 2/3 μtot) the friction process. Furthermore the μtot decreases with increasing contact pressure especially in the low pressure range and depends on the form of motion (continuous and discontinuous). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Termites, beetles, and fungi are the main deteriorating agents on forest products and services within Ethiopia's industry and construction sectors. This study aimed to assess the natural durability of Pinus patula ssp tecunumanii lumber and the efficacy of used motor oil (UMO) in protecting against subterranean termites and fungal damage. Sixty-four lumber samples (stakes) measuring 2x5x50cm were treated with UMO using hot-and-cold dipping (HCD) and brushing methods, besides untreated controls. These samples were then installed at Bako and Adami Tulu Graveyard Research Stations for observation over four and a half years. At the final evaluation period, the mean damage caused by subterranean termites at Bako station on P. tecunumanii stakes treated with UMO using HCD, brushing, and untreated controls was 47%, 90%, and 96%, respectively, while fungal damage rates were 23%, 69%, and 42%, respectively. At Adami Tulu station, termite damage rates on treated stakes were 30% (HCD), 61% (brushing), and 63% (untreated), with fungal damage rates of 0%, 38%, and 53%, respectively. The UMO treatment using HCD method doubled the service life of P. tecunumanii lumber stakes compared to untreated controls. Therefore, applying used motor oil using the HCD method is recommended to enhance the durability of P. tecunumanii lumber for ground and moisture contact applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hydro-viscous clutch has already become an inevitable choice for special vehicle transmission in the present and future. As a nonlinear system with a large hysteresis loop, its speed control performance is affected by input rotational speed, lubricating oil temperature, lubrication pressure, and other factors. The traditional control method cannot adjust the temperature and rotational speed, which will lead to problems of narrow speed range, poor rotational speed stability, and large dynamic load impact. In order to solve the above problems, this paper studies the control method of an integrated multi-parameter hydro-viscous speed control system (HSCS) in a controlled environment. Through the mechanism analysis of the law of HSCS, the influence law of speed and temperature during the system operation is found. The temperature closed loop based on model predictive control (MPC) is introduced to control the rotational speed, and then the traditional PID control results are compensated according to the speed closed loop. Next, a novel double closed loop control method of temperature and rotational speed for HSCS is formed. Finally, the simulating verification is carried out. Compared with the traditional control method, the design method in this paper can adjust the control parameters according to the temperature of the lubricating oil and the input rotational speed and effectively expand the domain of HSCS and the speed control stability. The effective transmission ratio is extended to 0.2~0.8, and the hydro-viscous torque and speed fluctuation under the engine rotational speed fluctuation are reduced by more than 30%. The novel control method of HSCS designed in this paper can effectively improve the influence of input rotational speed and lubricating oil temperature on the speed control performance of HSCS and can be widely used in nonlinear HSCS such as hydro-viscous clutch. Development of energy-efficient lubricants is a way to reduce energy consumption for transportation, with the tendency to design molecules that are beneficial in reducing the viscosity of synthetic oils. Oligoether esters (OEEs), as a low-viscosity ester base oil, have characteristics such as simple synthesis and excellent lubrication effect, however, the application of OEEs in tribology field has rarely been investigated. The objective of the present study is to investigate the effect of structure on the lubricating performance of OEEs and to develop a predictive model for OEEs based on quantitative structure-property relationship (QSPR) through a combination of experiment and statistical modeling. Results showed that glycol chains contribute positively to lubrication with the ether functional groups increasing the sites of adsorption. Compared to branched-chain OEEs, straight-chain OEEs exhibited reduced wear, which was mainly due to the thicker adsorption film formed by the straight-chain structure. Furthermore, carbon films were detected on lightly worn surfaces, indicating that OEEs underwent oxidation during the friction process. Based on the results of principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least squares (PLS), it could be found that the predictive models of viscosity–temperature performance, thermal stability performance, coefficient of friction (COF), and wear volume (WV) performed well and robustly. To assess the effect of silicon content (SC) and test parameters on the lubricated wear of Zn-30 wt.% Al-3 wt.% Cu-(0.5–5) wt.% Si alloys, six quaternary alloys were produced by casting. Their wear properties were investigated at different ranges of contact pressure (CP) of 1–8 MPa and sliding velocity (SV) of 1–3 ms−1 for two different sliding distances (SD) of 20 km and 108 km. It was observed that Si addition (SA) improved the tribological properties of Zn-30Al-3Cu alloy, but an increase in the SC above a certain percentage (0.5%) adversely affected these properties. Therefore, Zn-30Al-3Cu-0.5Si alloy demonstrated the lowest friction coefficient (FC) and wear volume (WV) among the alloys tested. The correlations between the lubricated wear properties (FC and WV) of the alloys and test conditions (CP and SV) were made by non-linear regression analysis using the wear test data. The deposition of spray droplets is a hot topic in the field of plant protection. The air-induction nozzle, which is commonly used in agricultural spray, can produce droplets containing bubbles. However, few studies have addressed the deposition of hollow droplets. In the present study, we used experimental and numerical methods to investigate the deposition of hollow droplets. Three kinds of liquid—water, oil-based emulsion and organosilicon—were used to produce hollow droplets, and the diameter of droplets varied from 3 to 4.5 mm. Both hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces were selected as deposition targets. The results show that the deposition of hollow droplets can generate a central jet, which is similar to the Wortington jet. High deposition velocity and the large bubble volume were responsible for the large attainable height of the central jet. On the hydrophilic surface, for water hollow droplets with Weber number (We) ranging from 350 to 391, the central jet began to break up as the bubble fraction of the hollow droplet reached 0.15. Based on the numerical results, it was found that the internal pressure difference between the bottom liquid and the air cavity leads to the formation of the central jet. The bubble volume and impact velocity were both positively correlated with the internal pressure difference. The oil-based emulsion promoted the adherence of the hollow droplet by lubricating the hydrophobic surface. The oil-based emulsion hollow droplets shifted from rebounding to adhering on the hydrophobic surface as the emulsion concentration reached 0.4%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Experience shows that dilution of lubricating oil with diesel oil is unfavorable to the engine, causing issues including deterioration of engine performance, shortening of oil life, and reduction in engine reliability and safety. This paper presents the verification of the hypothesis that the changes in lubricity, friction coefficient, and decreasing oil film thickness (using a relative approach, given as a percentage) are similar for lubricating oil and diesel mixtures prepared from fresh lubricating oil and used lubricating oil. To validate this hypothesis, an experiment is conducted using a high-frequency reciprocating rig (HFFR), in which the lubricity is determined by the corrected average wear scar WS1.4, the coefficient of friction μ, and the percentage relative decrease in oil film thickness r. A qualitative visual assessment of the wear scars on the test specimens is also performed after the HFFR tests. The testing covers mixtures of SAE 30 grade Marinol CB-30 RG1230 lubricating oil with Orlen Efecta Diesel Biodiesel. The used lubricating oil is extracted from the circulating lubrication system of a supercharged, trunk-piston, four-stroke ZUT Zgoda Sulzer 5 BAH 22 engine installed in the laboratory of ship power plants of the Maritime University of Szczecin. Mixtures for the experiment are prepared for fresh lubricating oil with diesel oil and used lubricating oil with diesel oil. Mixtures of these lubricating oils with diesel oil are examined for diesel oil concentrations in the mixture equal to 1, 2, 5, 10, 15, and 20% m/m. The results of the experiment confirm the hypothesis, proving that, for up to 20% m/m diesel oil concentration in lubricating oil, the changes in the lubricity of used lubricating oil diluted with diesel oil can be evaluated based on reference data prepared for mixtures of diesel oil with fresh lubricating oil. The linear approximation of μ and r trends is made with a certain margin of error we estimated. Herein, raw and alkali-treated hydrochars from biomass waste are prepared as a highly active catalyst for the conversion of waste motor oil into diesel-like fuels. Among all materials, hydrochar obtained at 250 °C and subsequent alkali activation with KOH showed a 600% improvement of the kinetic constant from 0.0088 to 0.0614 m−1. Conversion values at the same conditions were also improved from 66 to 80% regarding thermal and catalytic cracking, respectively. Moreover, the activation energy was also reduced from 293 to 246 kJ mol−1 for thermal and catalytic cracking, respectively. After characterization, the enhanced catalytic activity was correlated to an increased surface area and functionalization due to the alkali activation. Finally, the liquid product characterization demonstrated that catalytic cracking is more effective than thermal cracking for producing hydrocarbons in the diesel range. In particular, hydrochar-based catalysts are suggested to promote the formation of specific hydrocarbons so that the carbon distribution can be tailored by modifying the hydrothermal treatment temperature. One of the primary challenges in the automotive industry is the wear of engine components, such as the crankshaft and camshaft, which is the most pronounced during the engine's startup phase, when the amount of lubricant fluid is at its lowest. This study aims to enhance the surface wear resistance of automotive crankshaft steel by applying a boriding thermochemical process. This process forms a hard surface layer on the steel, improving its mechanical properties and bolstering its wear resistance, especially under dry conditions. Boride layers were achieved using the powder-pack boriding process in a conventional furnace, with meticulous treatment times of 2, 4, and 6 h at a constant temperature of 950 °C. The nature of the layers was analyzed using X-ray diffraction, and their tribological behavior was evaluated using the pin-on-disk test. The growth of the layers was directly proportional to the treatment time and was estimated at 145 µm and 48 µm for the 6 and 2 h of treatment, respectively. The surface hardness increased from 320 HV for the non-treated steel to 2034 HV for the sample exposed to 950 °C for 6 h. The results indicate a significant reduction in the coefficient of friction from 0.43 for the non-treated steel to 0.12 for the samples exposed to 950 °C for 6 h, suggesting potential wear protection during the engine starting period. The current study encompasses a comprehensive assessment of three biopolymeric flocculants on the overall performance of recycling waste lubricating oil to achieve a higher percentage recovery, flocculation efficacy, and better quality of recovered base oil. The findings reveal that with experimental conditions such as (i) mixing time of 80 min; (ii) agitation speed of 400 rpm; (iii) reaction temperature 50°C; (iv) solvent to waste oil ratio 3:1 g/g; and (v) flocculant dosage 1 g/ kg of solvents, 1‐butanol and sodium alginate gives highest percentage yield of 91% followed by corn starch of 89.10% and xanthan gum of 87.18% as bio‐polymer flocculant. The effects of various process parameters of bio‐flocculants on flocculation efficiency are expounded. With the process parameters of (i) initial pH of 5.9, 6.0, and 6.2; (ii) mixing time − 59, 60, and 63 min; and (iii) solution temperature of 59, 60, and 62.2°C, maximum flocculation efficacy (% sludge removal) of 16.24%, 13.01%, and 14.09% were attained for the cases of refined oil treated with sodium alginate, corn starch, and xanthan gum, respectively. Results also reveal that the physicochemical properties of refined base oil treated with 1‐butanol and sodium alginate as bio flocculant are almost close to the virgin lubricating oil. The optimum recovery of high‐quality base oil with the adoption of green technology and solvent–bio flocculant combination can mitigate the environmental impact of waste oil and create an energy‐efficient sustainable condition for the regeneration of re‐refined base oil. Micro-arc oxidation (MAO) is a promising technology for enhancing the wear resistance of engine cylinders by growing a high hardness alumina ceramic film on the surface of light aluminum engine cylinders. However, the positive and negative pulse coordination, voltage characteristic signal, hardness distribution characteristics of the ceramic film, and their internal mechanism during the growth process are still unclear. This paper investigates the synergistic effect mechanism of cathodic and anodic current on the growth behaviour of alumina, dynamic voltage signal, and hardness distribution of micro-arc oxidation film. Ceramic film samples were fabricated under various conditions, including current densities of 10, 12, 14, and 16 A/dm2, and current density ratios of cathode and anode of 1.1, 1.2, and 1.3, respectively. Based on the observed characteristics of the process voltage curve and the spark signal changes, the growth of the ceramic film can be divided into five stages. The influence of positive and negative current density parameters on the segmented growth process of the ceramic film is mainly reflected in the transition time, voltage variation rate, and the voltage value of different growth stages. Enhancing the cathode pulse effect or increasing the current density level can effectively shorten the transition time and accelerate the voltage drop rate. The microhardness of the ceramic film cross-section presents a discontinuous soft-hard-soft regional distribution. Multiple thermal cycles lead to a gradient differentiation of the Al2O3 crystal phase transition ratio along the thickness direction of the layer. The layer grown on the outer surface of the initial substrate exhibits the highest hardness, with a small gradient change in hardness, forming a high hardness zone approximately 20–30 μm wide. Nano-graphene lubricating oil with appropriate concentration shows excellent performance in reducing friction and wear under different working conditions of diesel engines, and has been widely concerned. Lubricating oil has a significant impact on particulate matter (PM) emissions. At present, there are few studies on the impact of nano-graphene lubricating oil on the physicochemical properties of PM. In order to comprehensively evaluate the impact of nano-graphene lubricating oil on diesel engines, this paper mainly focused on the effects of lubricating oil nano-graphene additives on the particle size distribution and physicochemical properties of PM. The results show that, compared with pure lubricating oil, the total number of nuclear PM and accumulated PM of nano-graphene lubricating oil is significantly increased. The fractal dimension of PM of nano-graphene lubricating oil increases and its structure becomes more compact. The average fringe separation distance of basic carbon particles decreases, the average fringe length increases. The degree of ordering and graphitization of basic carbon particles are higher. The fringe tortuosity of basic carbon particles decreases, and the fluctuation of carbon layer structure of basic carbon particles decreases. Aliphatic substances in PM are basically unchanged, aromatic components and oxygen functional groups increase. The initial PM oxidation temperature and burnout temperature increase, the maximum oxidation rate temperature and combustion characteristic index decrease, and the activation energy increases, making it more difficult to oxidize. This article presents the verification of the hypothesis on using certain approximation curves in the evaluation of used lubricating oil. These curves are plotted for fresh lubricating oil to approximate the parameters of lubricating oil diluted with diesel oil. To confirm the hypothesis, an experiment is conducted to determine the flash point, initial boiling point, density at 15 °C, kinematic viscosity at 40 °C and 100 °C, and viscosity index. The analysis covers fresh oil and used SAE 30 grade Marinol CB-30 RG1230 oil taken from the circulating lubrication system of a supercharged, trunk-piston, 4-stroke ZUT Zgoda Sulzer 5 BAH 22 engine that is located in the Marine Power Plant Laboratory of the Maritime University of Szczecin. Undiluted lubricating oils (both fresh and used) and mixtures of lubricating oils with diesel oil are examined for diesel oil concentrations in the mixture equal to 1, 2, 5, 10, 15, and 20% m/m. Orlen Efecta Diesel Biodiesel is used to prepare the mixtures. The functions approximating the parameters for fresh oil are determined and adapted to describe the variation of the same parameters for the used lubricating oil. For each case, the coefficient of determination, the maximum relative error of the model fitting to the experimental results, and the root mean square error (RMSE) are determined. Recently, aiming for the enhanced dispersibility of graphene-based nanomaterials in lubricating oil matrices to serve as highly efficient lubricant additives, numerous modification approaches have been extensively studied. However, these previous modification routes usually involve a tedious multistep modification process or multitudinous toxic reagents, restricting their extensive practical application. In this work, novel graphene oxide (GO) nanoadditives (RGO-g-BO) featuring excellent durable dispersion capability and remarkable tribological performance were successfully prepared via an environmentally friendly one-step approach consisting of surface grafting of long-chain bromooctadecane (BO) and in situ chemical reduction. Benefiting from the greatly improved lipophilicity (resulting from the introduction of hydrophobic long-chain alkane groups and chemical reduction), along with the miniaturization effect, RGO-g-BO exhibits superior long-term dispersion stability in the finished oil. Moreover, the tribological properties results demonstrated that the finished oil filled with RGO-g-BO nanolubricants achieved an outstanding friction-reducing and antiwear performance. Particularly, under the optimum content of RGO-g-BO (as low as 0.005 wt%), the friction coefficient as well as the wear volume of the composite finished oil were greatly reduced by 13% and 53%, respectively, as compared with nascent finished oil. Therefore, in view of the advantages of low-cost, one-step facile synthesis, desirable dispersion capability, and remarkable tribological performance, RGO-g-BO holds great prospects as a highly efficient lubrication additive in the tribology field. The real-time monitoring and fault diagnosis of modern machinery and equipment impose higher demands on equipment maintenance, with the extraction of morphological characteristics of wear debris in lubricating oil emerging as a critical approach for real-time monitoring of wear, holding significant importance in the field. The online visual ferrograph (OLVF) technique serves as a representative method in this study. Various semantic segmentation approaches, such as DeepLabV3+, PSPNet, Segformer, Unet, and other models, are employed to process the oil wear particle image for conducting comparative experiments. In order to accurately segment the minute wear debris in oil abrasive images and mitigate the influence of reflection and bubbles, we propose a multi-level feature reused Unet (MFR Unet) that enhances the residual link strategy of Unet for improved identification of tiny wear debris in ferrograms, leading to superior segmentation results. The reliability of a car engine is ensured by the combination of oil properties that are laid in the oil production process. The properties of engine oil change with the mileage of the car compared to the initial state. When the rejection parameters of the oil reach the limit level, then it is necessary to replace the old oil with a new one. The rate of change intensity in the properties of particular oil depends on both the make of the vehicle and the operating its conditions. In difficult conditions of operation of the car, it is necessary to reduce the run period of between oil changes. But if the car is operated in light or gentle conditions, then the normative oil change may not realize its full potential. In this case, extending the oil change intervals beyond the norm leads to an increase in the efficiency of its use, which reduces the overall operating costs. It will be optimal when the service life of the oil will be determined by the actual state of the basic properties. The paper presents the results of experimental studies on changes in the concentration and rate of iron entry into motor oil. In addition, other indicators of oil in samples were determined: the viscosity, the flash point in an open crucible, the dielectric constant, the acidity and alkali numbers. The study involved motor oils of the same group, but from different manufacturers, for various brands of trucks and cars at different stages of the life cycle. The energy loading on the engine can be estimated by fuel consumption, which depends on the operating speed or operating conditions of the vehicle. An analysis of the results experiment was carried out, which established a relationship between the concentration of iron in oil and fuel consumption or car mileage. The initial friction stage between the contacting materials would generate a maximum shear force and an unstable fluctuating time, which had a negative effect on the entire frictional system, especially at low temperature conditions. In order to decrease the occurring shear force and fluctuating time on the onset of friction, two different lubricating oils were applied in this study to investigate the influence of lubricant's viscosity on these friction behaviors. The frictional experiments were conducted between the steel ball and the 40CrMnMo, and special attention was paid to the relationship between maximum friction force, fluctuating time, frictional vibration and the initial lubricant temperature. The results showed that the friction force first increased to the maximum value and then experienced an oscillation damping period (fluctuating time) before it reached a stable state. And this fluctuating behavior caused corresponding vibrations on the initial contacting. However, compared to the high viscosity lubricating oil (HO), the low viscosity lubricating oil (LO) contributed to more than 50% reductions on max friction force, fluctuating time and vibration at the cold start (0 °C). Moreover, the weakened initial frictional fluctuation was conducive to generating a low and stable friction coefficient (COF) and wear loss of the long-term test. The discrepancy on lubricating performance was that the low viscosity provided high fluidity, which allowed rapid distribution of the lubricant between the contacting surfaces and formed an intact lubricating film. Similarly, the high temperature decreased the viscosity of HO and thus led to satisfactory friction reductions. Lubricating oils play an important role in friction-reducing and anti-wear, as well as enhancing mechanical efficiency. To improve the oxidation stability and service life of lubricating oils, the composition and structure of antioxidants should be strategically designed, and these parameters have significantly affected the performance of antioxidants in lubricating oils. Antioxidants are classified into two types based on the substrates they act on: peroxide decomposers and radical scavengers. In this review, the effects of peroxide decomposers (including sulfur compounds, phosphorus compounds, sulfur–phosphorus compounds, and sulfur–nitrogen compounds) and radical scavengers, such as hindered phenols and aromatic amines, have been discussed as additives in the antioxidant properties of lubricating oils. The results indicate that peroxide decomposers have excellent performances in lubricating oils, but high pollution of S and P is not conducive to their widespread use. On the contrary, radical scavengers also have superior antioxidant properties and no pollution, possessing the potential to replace traditional antioxidants. In addition, molecular structures with (multiple) synergistic antioxidant properties have been extensively designed and reported. The hydraulic oil of marine equipment contains a large number of abrasive contaminants that reflect the operating condition of the equipment. In order to realize the detection of particulate contaminants, this research first proposes a shape-based classification method for oil abrasive particles, designs an oil abrasive particle collection system, and constructs a new dataset. After that, the research introduces deep learning target detection technology in computer vision, and uses GhostNet to lighten the network structure, the CBAM (Convolutional Block Attention Module) attention mechanism to improve the generalization ability of the model, and the ASPP module to enhance the model sensory wildness, respectively. A lightweight target detection model, WDD, is created for the identification of abrasive particles. In this study, the WDD model is tested against other network models, and the mAP value of WDD reaches 91.2%, which is 4.8% higher than that of YOLOv5s; in addition, the detection speed of the WDD model reaches 55 FPS. Finally, this study uses real ship lubricating oils for validation, and the WDD model still maintains a high level of accuracy. Therefore, the WDD model effectively balances the accuracy and detection speed of marine oil abrasive particle detection, which is superior to other oil abrasive particle detection techniques. Oxide layers on the surface of the aluminum alloys D16 and AMg6 and on arc coatings sprayed with electrode wires made of the alloys D16 and AMg6 were synthesized using plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO). The microstructure, phase composition and micro-hardness of the PEO layers were studied. In addition to the two main phases (α-Al2O3 and γ-Al2O3), a small amount of a metastable crystalized Al2.427O3.64 phase was found in their structure. A comparison was made of the wear resistance and friction coefficients of the synthesized PEO layers during friction tests in pairs with other PEO layers, a galvanic chromium coating, cast iron, steels and bronze of the BrC30 type. The results of the friction tests for the various PEO layers on aluminum alloys in tribo-contact with high-hardness elements made of hardened or chrome-plated steel justify the possibility of their use in a friction pair. We experimentally showed the influence of glycerin additive in motor oil 15W30 on the change in the friction coefficient of the PEO layers synthesized on the aluminum alloys and on the arc-sprayed coatings on their surfaces in tribocouples with hardened steel. The content of this article presents research on used and fresh engine oils. The aim of the experiment is to preliminarily develop a method for assessing the condition of engine oil subjected to service. A four-ball tester was used to compare the lubricating properties of the engine oil as one component of the tribosystem under laboratory conditions. The method used to determine the mashing load consisted of subjecting the kinematic node to a linearly increasing load with a build-up rate of 409 N·s-1 under operating conditions of approximately 20°C and a spindle speed of 500 rpm. The presented article is a continuation of the consideration of the lubricating properties of engine oils subjected to operation. The tests carried out made it possible to observe that fresh oils are characterised by their ability to carry higher loads in relation to oils subjected to service. This is evidenced by the obtained values of scuffing loads, which have a higher value for fresh oils (The average percentage increase in scuffing load for fresh oils was 62.23%). Comparing the friction torque characteristics with each other, it can be seen that the values of maximum friction torque are also higher for the fresh oils group. The modelling process made it possible to characterise changes in the tribological properties of the lubricating oil being used. In the future, the described model will be extended to include further input parameters (viscosity, contaminant content, fractional composition, etc.), which will allow a multi-parametric assessment of lubricating oil wear. In this paper, the tribological characteristics of an oil-soluble magnetic fluid additive under mixed lubrication are studied by experiments and numerical simulation. [bmim][FeCl4] is dissolved in CF10W-40 lubricating oil as a magnetic liquid additive, and its friction coefficient is tested by a point contact friction tester at different temperatures, rotational speeds and magnetic field intensities. The transition condition of lubrication state is obtained through analyzing the Stribeck curves based on the experiments, and the strength model of boundary film is established accordingly. A mixed lubrication model is established by substituting the boundary film strength model and the surface roughness model into the hydrodynamic lubrication model based on Reynolds equation. The results show that the magnetic solution as an additive can obviously reduce friction and wear, and the effect is more obvious under the condition of magnetic field. The boundary film strength model can accurately reflect the transition characteristics of lubrication state in the presence of boundary film, and the mixed lubrication model based on boundary film strength model can more precisely reflect the tribological characteristics of friction pairs, so this study provides a new theoretical method for the related research on the influence of boundary film on lubrication characteristics. Carbazole derivatives can be used as antioxidants in the lubricating oil industry. The alkylation of carbazole with 2-chloro-2-methylpropane and 2-bromopropane catalyzed by anhydrous aluminum chloride was studied. Initially, 3,6-di-iso-propylcarbazole and 3,6-di-tert-butylcarbazole were using dichloromethane and dibromomethane as solvents at room temperature, respectively. The synthesis conditions were optimized. Subsequently, the effects of reaction time, catalyst dosage, and molar ratio of carbazole to alkylating agent were investigated, and orthogonal experiments were performed. The structures of the carbazole derivatives were characterized by Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), mass spectrum (MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR). The thermal stability of the synthesized carbazole derivatives was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The carbazole derivatives were added into the lubricating oil with a mass fraction of 0.8% and the miscibility, stability and oxidation resistance of the mixed system were evaluated by mechanical stirring and a rotary pressure vessel oxidation test (RPVOT). The DSC results showed that there was good thermal stability for the carbazole derivatives. The mechanical stirring method revealed good solubility and stability for the mixture of oil and carbazole derivatives. The RPVOT results showed that isopropyl carbazole derivatives could increase the oxidation induction period of lubricating oil to 1.39 times, and tert-butyl carbazole derivatives could increase the oxidation induction period of lubricating oil to 1.91 times. Ferromagnetic debris in lubricating oil, serving as an important communication carrier, can effectively reflect the wear condition of mechanical equipment and predict the remaining useful life. In practice application, the detection signals collected by using inductive sensors contain not only debris signals but also noise terms, and weak debris features are prone to be distorted, which makes it a severe challenge to debris signature identification and quantitative estimation. In this paper, a debris signature extraction method established on segmentation entropy with an adaptive threshold was proposed, based on which five identification indicators were investigated to improve detection accuracy. Poly (2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine) (PMPC), as a highly hydrophilic as well as biocompatible material, has been widely used in biomedical applications. In this study, the friction reduction and wear resistance of HXLPE were improved by grafting PMPC on its surface. However, the PMPC will be sheared off during friction, which is difficult to meet the long-term service requirements of artificial joints. This can be achieved by improving the lubrication environment to minimize PMPC shedding. To simulate the human lubrication environment, free PMPC (lubrication factor) and Cu2+ (transition group metal ion catalyst) were added to neonatal bovine serum (NBCS). When the friction pair consisting of grafted PMPC-modified HXLPE and Cu/ZrO2 ceramics is rubbed therein, the grafted PMPC interacts with the free PMPC, while Cu2+ catalyzes the oxidative hydrolysis of serum proteins into carbon-containing small molecules and adsorbs on the surface of the Cu/ZrO2 ceramics to form a carbon-rich lubrication layer. The composite lubrication layer consisting of grafted-free PMPC and carbon-rich lubrication layer provides good load-bearing and lubrication properties at the friction interface. And the wear rate is reduced by 45% compared to rubbing in deionized water. This technique can reduce the shedding of grafted PMPC state and improve the load-bearing performance of the interfacial lubrication layer, thus reducing the wear of HXLPE and prolonging the service life of the artificial joint. The development of slippery surfaces has been widely investigated due to their excellent icephobic properties. A distinct kind of an ice-repellent structure known as a slippery liquid-infused porous surface (SLIPS) has recently drawn attention due to its simplicity and efficacy as a passive ice-protection method. These surfaces are well known for exhibiting very low ice adhesion values (τice < 20 kPa). In this study, pure Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) fibers were fabricated using the electrospinning process to produce superhydrophobic (SHS) porous coatings on samples of the aeronautical alloy AA6061-T6. Due to the high fluorine–carbon bond strength, PTFE shows high resistance and chemical inertness to almost all corrosive reagents as well as extreme hydrophobicity and high thermal stability. However, these unique properties make PTFE difficult to process. For this reason, to develop PTFE fibers, the electrospinning technique has been used by an PTFE nanoparticles (nP PTFE) dispersion with addition of a very small amount of polyethylene oxide (PEO) followed with a sintering process (380 °C for 10 min) to melt the nP PTFE together and form uniform fibers. Once the porous matrix of PTFE fibers is attached, lubricating oil is added into the micro/nanoscale structure in the SHS in place of air to create a SLIPS. The experimental results show a high-water contact angle (WCA) ≈ 150° and low roll-off angle (αroll-off) ≈ 22° for SHS porous coating and a decrease in the WCA ≈ 100° and a very low αroll-off ≈ 15° for SLIPS coating. On one hand, ice adhesion centrifuge tests were conducted for two types of icing conditions (glaze and rime) accreted in an ice wind tunnel (IWT), as well as static ice at different ice adhesion centrifuge test facilities in order to compare the results for SHS, SLIPs and reference materials. This is considered a preliminary step in standardization efforts where similar performance are obtained. On the other hand, the ice adhesion results show 65 kPa in the case of SHS and 4.2 kPa of SLIPS for static ice and <10 kPa for rime and glace ice. Lubrication system failure is a significant cause of in-flight shutdown incidents in aviation engines. The pressure differential valve, an essential component of a certain type of aviation engine lubrication system, is responsible for controlling the flow rate and pressure of the lubricating oil. Comprehending the transient flow characteristics of the pressure differential valve is of paramount importance for the secure operation of lubrication systems. This paper establishes a transient flow model of a pressure differential valve based on a transient computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method, and the experimental validation demonstrates the effectiveness of the computational model. The internal flow characteristics of the differential pressure valve at different stages during the opening process were studied. Additionally, four transient lubricating oil flow models with different valve spool damping orifice were established to analyse the impact of damping orifice structure on valve spool movement characteristics, pressure control characteristics, and flow field distribution. The results indicate that when the diameter of the valve spool damping orifice increases from 0.3 mm to 1.0 mm, the valve spool displacement and fluid force increase by 88 % and 20 %, respectively. Meanwhile, the peak valve spool velocity, peak oil supply pressure, and steady-state value decreased by 15 %, 29 %, and 34 %, respectively. As the length of the valve spool damping orifice increases from 0.894 mm to 4.0 mm, the growth rate of valve spool displacement and fluid force gradually decreases, with the peak valve spool velocity decreasing by 7 %. The online monitoring of metal particles in lubricating oil plays an important role in equipment fault diagnosis technology. This paper designs an online wear monitoring warning sensor based on the electromagnetic induction of metal particles in lubricating oil. First, different from the traditional three-coil sensing and detection method, the sensor consists of two excitation coils and one detection coil. In addition, the parallel capacitance and detection capacitance parameters are obtained by COMSOL's scanning frequency, and the best detection capacitance is 7.53 nF. Second, according to the obtained optimal detection parallel capacitance value, the amplitude data of the particle signal, as well as the ferromagnetic particles above 60 µm and the non-ferromagnetic particles above 80 µm, are obtained. Third, according to the principle of three-coil induction, a mapping relationship model was established between the size range of metal wear particles in lubricating oil. Finally, we set up an oil wear particle platform to verify the sensor performance. The ferromagnetic and non-ferromagnetic particles are divided into multiple size ranges, and the peak-to-peak values of the output signal of different-sized wear particles are measured. We developed a prototype sensor and verified the signal consistency and repeatability of the sensor to wear metal particles. In addition, we used the sensor to test a large number of metal particles of different sizes (14 ferromagnetic particle standard samples with particle sizes ranging from 20.64 to 457.59 µm and ten non-ferromagnetic particle standard samples with particle sizes ranging from 40.52 to 348.07 µm). The experimental results show that the sensor can directly achieve monitoring sensitivity for ferromagnetic particles greater than 64.57 µm and non-ferromagnetic (copper) particles greater than 82.83 µm under the 4.2 mm aperture flow channel. The sensor can effectively realize the sensitivity on monitoring of small ferromagnetic particles and non-ferromagnetic particles, and it is particularly sensitive to small non-ferromagnetic particles. VARIOUS TESTS HAVE BEEN CARRIED OUT ON THE RECYCLED USED LUBRICATING OIL, INCLUDING THOSE FOR DENSITY, KINEMATIC VISCOSITY, VISCOSITY INDEX. POUR POINT, COLOR, AND SULFUR CONTENT. Protecting motor bearings from electric erosion is crucial as electric vehicles evolve. To better understand how lubrication interacts with electric discharge within motor bearings during varying speeds of vehicle operation, an optical ball-on-disk tribometer was modified to investigate the influence of alternating current (AC) electric fields on film thickness, friction force under various lubrication regions, and discharge characteristics. The study revealed that in AC electric fields, as the lubrication state shifts from mixed lubrication to fluid lubrication region, the electrical characteristic of the lubricating oil film changes from resistive to capacitive, accompanied by an increase in discharge frequency. Under the elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) region, an electrical potential difference between the surfaces separated by the lubrication film leads to a reduction in film thickness, which can be attributed to the generation of Joule heating. If the potential difference across the oil film increases to the threshold voltage, destructive discharge occurs with the emission of a significant amount of purple light. Joule heating generated by the AC electric fields also results in a reduction in the friction coefficient under the fluid lubrication region. However, due to the reduction in film thickness, the lubrication state eventually moves to mixed lubrication, leading to a substantial increase in the friction coefficient. In addition, the study also investigated the use of grease with a nanographite conductive additive. With the advancement of industries such as high-speed railways, new energy vehicles, and wind power, bearings are frequently exposed to various electric field environments, leading to the need for lubricating oil films of bearings to withstand voltage. One of the major issues caused by the breakdown discharge process of the lubricating oil film in bearings is the generation of local instantaneous high temperatures. This temperature rise is a key factor contributing to problems such as high operating temperature of bearings, surface damage in the contact area, and degradation of lubrication performance. This research article focuses on the comprehensive influence of bearing friction and electrical factors. It establishes a heat source calculation model and a temperature field simulation model specifically for current-carrying bearings. This study analyzes both the overall temperature rise of bearings and the local temperature rise resulting from breakdown discharge. Furthermore, the accuracy of the simulation analysis is verified through experiments. The temperature field simulation and experimental results consistently indicate that electrical environmental factors can cause an increase in the overall temperature rise of a bearing. Four hot-gas bypass defrosting configurations for CO2-NH3 cascade blast freezer for application in fish processing firm are numerically investigated. Due to the high moisture content of fish, defrosting is necessary after every 4 to 5 h of batch operation. A thermodynamic model for the cascade system and defrosting was developed to study various defrosting configurations formulated by rearranging the existing compressor to operate as a defrosting compressor and with the addition of an external defrosting compressor. From the simulation findings, it can be summarized that the conventional hot-gas bypass defrosting without defrost compressor is suitable for a high-capacity cascade refrigeration system with more than three evaporators. For low cooling capacity refrigeration systems, a defrosting compressor is necessary to elevate the temperature above the cascade condensing temperature. A dedicated defrosting compressor with a power consumption of 3.1 kW and a modified refrigeration/defrosting compressor with a power consumption of 6.8 kW can deliver 33.3 kW of heating at a temperature of +10 °C (45 bar). Incorporating a desuperheater between the main and defrosting compressors reduces compressor temperature and maintains the lubricating oil stability, without change in defrosting energy consumption and less exergy loss. The field of nanotechnology has shown promise in addressing major problems and improving drilling effectiveness. An overview of the difficulties encountered during oil and gas well drilling operations and the demand for creative solutions opens the debate. This review explores how nanotechnology is transforming the oil industry and enhancing performance as a whole. The evaluation of the uses of nanotechnology for better oil recovery, real-time monitoring, innovative materials, drilling fluids, and reservoir characterization are extensively discussed in this review. The primary function of additives is to improve the fundamental characteristics of drilling fluids. The variety of fluid additives available is a reflection of the complex drilling–fluid systems that are currently being used to enable drilling in increasingly difficult subsurface conditions. Common additives used in water- and oil-based drilling fluids include lubrication, shale stability, filtration control, rheology control, viscosification, and pH regulation. Drilling fluids frequently contain filtration control additives such as starch, polyanionic cellulose (PAC), carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), and nanoparticles (NP). Commonly used rheology-modifier additives are xanthan gum, carboxymethyl cellulose, guar gum powder, and, more recently, salt-responsive zwitterionic polymers that were used as viscosifiers to water-based drilling fluids. The three main additives that regulate pH are citric acid monohydrate, potassium hydroxide, and sodium hydroxide. Additives that stabilize shale, such as potassium and sodium salts and asphaltenes, are often used. A wide range of materials are included in the category of lubricating additives, including polymers, asphaltenes, glass beads, oils of various grades, and oil-surfactants. Various fibrous materials, including wood, cotton, fibrous minerals, shredded tires from vehicles, and paper pulp, are used as additives to control circulation. Furthermore, shredded cellophane, bits of plastic laminate, plate-like minerals like mica flakes, granulated inert materials such as nut shells, and nano-polymers are used in wellbores to reduce fluid loss. The incorporation of nanoparticles into drilling fluids has produced upgraded fluids with better features, including improved lubricity, thermal stability, and filtering capacities. These developments aid in lowering friction, enhancing wellbore stability, and enhancing drilling efficiency. This paper also emphasizes how nanotechnology has made enhanced drilling equipment and materials possible. Drilling equipment's longevity and performance are increased by nanocomposite materials that have been reinforced with nanoparticles due to their improved mechanical strength, wear resistance, and thermal stability. Advanced reservoir characterisation tools, including nanoparticle tracers and nanoscale imaging methods, can help locate the best drilling sites and increase production effectiveness. On the other hand, nanofluids and nanoemulsions can potentially increase oil recovery because they enhance fluid mobility, lower interfacial tension, and alter rock wettability. Although nanotechnology has many advantages, there are also issues that need to be resolved. For an implementation to be effective, factors including nanoparticle stability, dispersion, and potential environmental effects must be carefully taken into account. This review highlights the need for future research to create scalable manufacturing procedures, improve nanoparticle behaviour, and determine nanomaterials' long-term environmental effects. Abnormal wear of the cylinder liner and piston ring in a marine diesel engine will lead to the failure of the diesel engine and colossal energy loss. Using lubricating oil additive with good anti-friction and anti-wear properties effectively inhibits the abnormal wear of cylinder liner and piston rings in diesel engine. The potassium borate/graphene (PB/GN) nano-composite lubricant additive suitable for a marine diesel engine was prepared in this study. Its tribological properties in 500 N base oil were investigated using a pin-on-disk tribotester under various loads and temperature. The frictional surface was comprehensively analyzed using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), x-ray photoelectron spectroscope (XPS) and Raman to explore the lubrication mechanisms of the PB/GN nano-composite additive. The results indicated that the PB/GN nano-composite additive could substantially improve the tribological performances of 500N base oil. This could be attributed to the good thermal conductivity of graphene and the tribofilms composed of C, FeO, Fe2O3 and B2O3 formed on the worn surface.
