This article provides an overview of the life and political career of Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman, a prominent figure in British politics during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in Glasgow in 1836, Campbell-Bannerman started as a Member of Parliament and eventually became the leader of the Liberal Party and Prime Minister. He faced challenges such as the split within the Liberal Party over Irish home rule and the Second Boer War. Campbell-Bannerman's leadership and ethical standards were tested during these times, but he ultimately led the Liberal Party to a landslide victory in the 1906 general election. He supported various reforms, including education, land, and licensing, but faced opposition from the Conservative majority in the House of Lords. Special collections libraries sometimes include games among their collections. However, games pose a challenge to catalogers, who are typically trained in printed formats. There is no single standard for cataloging games for special collections libraries. "Best Practices for Cataloging Objects Using RDA and MARC 21," published by Online Audiovisual Catalogers, focuses on circulating collections. The Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Materials manuals provide guidance on describing resources as artifacts but do not provide instructions for cataloging three-dimensional objects. As a result, special collections catalogers describing games at the item level draw instructions from multiple standards. This article describes the process of cataloging a game collection. Using two items from the collection as illustrative examples, the article shows how instructions from RDA, the OLAC Best Practices, and the DCRM manuals were used together to provide users with information to identify resources and to improve discovery of games in the library's catalog. Through analysing how information literate practitioners emerged in the pre-digital era, how they were taught and how they communicated their understandings of practice, we can better appreciate how these actors helped shape contemporary information landscapes. Such studies can be conducted through the resources in special collections of libraries and archives. Case studies of medieval scholarly practice, and the history of the island of St Helena, are presented as examples of where these archival sources reveal the influence of historic information (literate and illiterate) practice on modern information landscapes. This article explores how diasporic Chinese video artists present familial histories and tales of cross-cultural exchange in the context of an exhibition I am curating, Another Beautiful Country: Moving Images by Chinese American Artists, at the University of Southern California (USC) Pacific Asia Museum. I discuss projects by featured artists Richard Fung and Patty Chang. These artists' experimental documentaries and performative videos foster deep personal discoveries that defy the late-capitalist obsession with the new as defined by youth, novelty, and the next trend, providing revelatory insights through recuperative engagements with what has come before. In analyzing artworks by Fung and Chang, I also reference related texts by/about artists and historical figures including Walter Benjamin, Anna May Wong, and Zhang Ailing, who emigrated from the People's Republic of China to the United States in the 1950s and whose special collections in the USC Libraries helped inform the exhibition's programming. Charles J. Hirsch was an accountant and controller for the Golden Nugget casino from 1950 to 1970. He contributed to a movement in the 1950s and 1960s to advance the use of statistical sampling and analysis in the accounting profession. This manuscript is based on analysis of Hirsch's professional papers, held at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Libraries Special Collections and Archives. Hirsch used statistical sampling and analysis at Golden Nugget when statistical techniques had not yet been widely accepted or implemented by practicing accountants and auditors. Beginning in 1959, Hirsch made numerous conference presentations describing his work. In addition, Hirsch explicitly challenged the accounting profession to follow his lead and integrate statistical sampling and analysis into existing practice. In doing so, he joined an exclusive group of individuals, including Robert Trueblood, who were early advocates for using statistical techniques to improve the practice of accounting and auditing. The governance and development history of the Yellow River is an important part of Chinese history. Many historical documents and archives have been produced around the governance and development of the Yellow River as well as modern information resources such as databases and pictures, which together constitute a special collection of cultural heritage resources of the Yellow River Governance Landscape. In this paper, a literature search was conducted and unique resources collected for the construction of the Yellow River Governance Landscape, including the main literature, archives, pictures, databases, and other resources. Experts identified the concept and relevant resources of the Yellow River Governance Landscape, and librarians constructed the special collection. The future direction of digitization and database construction for the Yellow River Governance Landscape resources are also discussed. The special resources of the Yellow River Governance Landscape will help to increase the discipline collections and special collections of university libraries, provide resources for multidisciplinary teaching and research, and help to digitize and build databases of Yellow River Governance Landscape resources in the future as well as provide the content basis for open access and sharing of digital resources. In 2020, UNLV Special Collections and Archives conducted an internal audit of collections, strategic plans, and programming in order to assess how well it is meeting strategic goals of being more inclusive and increasing diversity and representation. In a data-driven institution, how can assessment be used to advocate for resources focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion? In conducting this analysis, UNLV hoped to answer the following query: how is progress measured if the goal is to preserve stories outside the traditional narrative (white, male, cisgender, heteronormative, etc.)? This paper details the library special collections material held at the library of Highland Theological College, University of the Highlands and Islands. Our three main special collections are the primary focus of this article: the William Temple Collection, the Rutherford House Collection, and the Fort Augustus Collection. We detail here the story behind these collections entering our custody and proceed to highlight a selection of monographs of provenance and personal interest. This paper constitutes original research into the collections, building upon a foundation laid by the late college librarian, Mr. Martin Cameron (1955-2019), who curated the collections over some twenty years. We also discuss our ongoing work in formulating our new Historical Texts Collection, comprising the library's oldest books of academic interest, and a subcollection of liturgical music, isolated from the Fort Augustus Collection. As special collections librarians have become increasingly focused on instruction and active learning there has been a move toward more elaborately designed assignments spread over multiple visits to the special collections library. While such activities are undoubtedly rewarding as library experiences, they may not meet the needs of the professors teaching the classes, for whom teaching time is often at a premium. The one-shot session allows the professor more flexibility within the semester, and this calls for librarians to think about how active learning techniques can be implemented in a single session. This article offers some practical solutions to how the librarian can plan one-time visits to the special collections library that center student learning, while still making the most of the semester's instruction time. Ultimately, librarians would do well to make a virtue out of the necessity of such single-visit instruction sessions, as their flexibility for professors means that they will be a central part of special collections' instruction for the foreseeable future. Based on the representative attributes built around specific subjects or uniqueness in publishing forms, special collections are often viewed as important asset of research libraries. However, previous studies have pointed out the common issues of hidden collections and backlogs in many special collections due to the unfamiliarity of the collections. This bibliometric study adopts the research methods of document analysis and citation analysis to investigate NTU Tanaka Collection, a special collection about botanical literature housed by National Taiwan University Library. 204 of the plant taxonomist Tanaka Tyozaburo's publications and the 792 citations he used are selected for citation analysis with reference to the history of taxonomic botany. The results of the study suggest NTU Tanaka Collection possesses significant and important references to taxonomic botanists in general, and to Tanaka's research on the identification and phylogeny of citrus fruits in specific. According to the findings, this study provides a historical bibliography and a reference network of NTU Tanaka Collection. This study is one of the very few empirical studies that adopted bibliometric analyses in library special collection, and it also provides rather thorough and objective evidence of scholarly usage of special collections. This is an editorial introduction to the Open Library of Humanities Special Collection on Utopian Art and Literature from Modern India, which has a major focus on literary and filmic imaginings of utopia and dystopia, with the majority of articles examining texts from the period before the Partition and independence of India in 1947. We show how the collection is part of the current scholarly endeavour to recognize the wealth of non-Eurocentric utopian and dystopian texts in literature. The introduction captures key themes such as the rural and the urban, discussed in the collection, and points out the scholarly innovation of paying sustained attention to literature written in bhashas (vernacular Indian languages) in both utopian and dystopian modes, and of analysing the work of classic Modernist writers from 20th-century India, such as Satinath Bhaduri and Tarasankar Bandopadhyay. Collecting and preserving e-books in special collections institutions poses challenges and rewards for working professionals in the field. Although scholars of book history have spent the last decade or so including e-books in their historical overviews, reviewing e-books' connections to their physical past and speculating on their impact on the future of books, their importance in the overall timeline of book evolution has not yet made an impact on collecting guidelines. Institutions do not seem overly eager to be the first to create a permanent collection of e-books--and there may be just cause for reluctance. Not only do e-book files come with the same long-term preservation problems as any born-digital materials, they also have added complications such as a lack of standardized file format, a lack of permanence in licensing agreements, and the constant threat of content changes, just to name a few. While this paper aims to persuade special collections libraries to begin collecting e-books, it also lays out the complications standing in the way of a successful e-book collection. Outreach events and public programming in academic libraries have grown to be an essential and regular part of institutional missions over the past twenty years. Events hosted by special collections and archives help break down the public perception of these spaces as unfamiliar and unwelcoming. Yet practical approaches to event planning in the literature to date rarely focus on the special collections field. This case study details the planning and execution of a long-running, well-attended, low-cost event hosted by an academic special collections library and provides guidance for library and archives staff looking to start similar events at their own institutions. The article discusses event planning, registration and publicity, donor outreach, additional event offerings, assessment methods, and future opportunities for expansion. This paper examines the ways the Philadelphia-based Chronicling Resistance project is breaking down or reinforcing the silencing of historically marginalized populations in the archives and the ways the shuttering of archives during the coronavirus pandemic has affected those populations' access to and relationship with archival material. Initiated by the Philadelphia Area Consortium of Special Collections Libraries (PACSCL) in 2018, Chronicling Resistance has had two chief aims: to amplify stories of resistance in the archives and to help collect and preserve stories of today's acts of resistance. The global pandemic hit shortly after the project entered a pilot phase (February 2020) in which three individuals who identify as black and as cultural organizers began working as nontraditional archival research fellows in PACSCL institutions. The researchers were frustrated by the loss of physicality and increased dependence upon archival theory's social hierarchies in online searches. In virtual group discussions about their research practice, they expressed concerns about the increased policing effect that public health precautions like restricted access to special collections may have on black and brown people. Their perseverance through the pilot phase, however, also offers an opportunity for archivists and special collections librarians trying to find improvisational, creative solutions to a public health and public history crisis. Archives and special collections libraries are not intuitive spaces for users. Barriers, both real and perceived1, exist whenever accessing an archive or special collections library. Access to archives and rare books should be within reasonable reach of all who have an interest in historical topics. This paper examines barriers to access in archival and special collections environments, discusses the importance of recognizing barriers, and addresses steps to dismantle them at your institution. Specific examples from our experience help illustrate where barriers exist and how to increase access, inclusivity, and transparency in archival and special collections public services. Imagine a UC library with more than half a million volumes, carefully acquired and protected, many of them singular or not commonly held by others in the world. Imagine the contents lining thirteen and a half miles from end to end—more than one Bancroft Library’s worth of material—but all of it invisible and inaccessible to users. That library represents the self-reported aggregate of the unprocessed backlog of special collections and archives materials owned by UC.The UC Libraries have the opportunity to bring such a library online, and make its contents discoverable and accessible to researchers, within this next decade. The UC Libraries also have the opportunity to prevent the creation of such a backlog of newly created scholarly content, much of it in digital format. Collective commitment is needed to invest the time and initial resources to follow through and to capture these opportunities.

In October 2018, Brigham Young University's Harold B. Lee Library experienced thefts from its general circulating collection and L. Tom Perry Special Col- lections. This article explores the literature on theft in special collections and libraries in general, reviews the events that occurred as a case study in dealing with theft, and concludes with some thoughts on how institutions can avoid purchasing stolen materials. The field of bibliometrics provides a lens through which to explore how a journal's environment is shaped by the professionals that contribute to its creation and maintenance. Despite a rich legacy of bibliometric studies in Library and Information Science scholarship more generally, to date no studies have explored bibliometrics related specifically to special collections library literature. This study considers the Rare Books and Manuscripts Section (RBMS) of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) journals, RBML and RBM, to explore what it is possible to learn about late twentieth and early twenty-first century American special collections librarianship as a profession through an aggregate consideration of the professional literature. This study uses existing tools from author affiliation studies to explore the professional literature and available data about the perspectives that shaped the RBMS journals, RBML and RBM, to gain a better understanding of the particular ecosystem that informs research and publication in the field of American special collections librarianship. A personal narrative is presented which explores the author's experiences of establishing the Thomas Fox Averill Kansas Studies Collection (TFAKSC) at Washburn University's Mabee Library in Topeka, Kansas.

Recent statistics suggest that nearly 1 in 5 undergraduate students in the United States report having a disability. Educators and special collections practitioners are thus confronted with a difficult question: What can be done to ensure that these students receive the accessible educational experience they deserve--and that is legally mandated--within our institutions? This article seeks to begin a critical discourse relating to the design of inclusive outreach in special collections for persons with disabilities. We begin by briefly outlining the emergence of the Disability Rights Movement and its relationship to institutional libraries, highlighting in particular where we see opportunities for improving outreach to populations that have special access needs. Next, we offer strategies for building a program of user-centered, accessible outreach for special collections libraries, such as locating and partnering with key stakeholders, designing flexible instruction modules, and assessing outreach activities. Finally, we conclude with reflections on the value of accessibility to the mission of special collections. Ultimately, instituting a programmatic approach, such as that which we advocate here, aligns with the professional ethics of the field and improves the quality of the special collections experience for all of our many diverse patron groups. The University of Denver's Libraries' Special Collections, which include the Beck Archives of Rocky Mountain Jewish History, have made a concerted effort to encourage faculty to incorporate the use of primary sources into their undergraduate curricula. Teaching teams, consisting of special collections curators, reference and instruction librarians, and faculty members, used both digital and physical primary resources to engage students. These efforts led to the DU project's being named the recipient of the 2018 Primary Source Award for Teaching from the Center of Research Libraries. The author shares the circumstances that led to his encounter with the personal archives of Victor Haim Perera (1934-2003), an award-winning Sephardic-American writer, journalist, environmental and political activist, and academic born in Guatemala City. Perera published six books on topics as varied as Sephardic history, the Maya Indians, and the Loch Ness monster, and contributed dozens of articles, short stories, and essays to newspapers, trade journals, magazines, and literary anthologies. This paper also provides an overview of Perera's life and work and shares information about the Victor Perera Papers collection at the University of Michigan Library. It presents a case study illustrating that library catalogers can improve discoverability of and access to library special collections by expanding beyond their core duties and investigating the contexts behind the materials that cross their desks. The article tackles with the growing attention given to special collections in academic libraries in Italy due to an increasing and more meaningful collaboration among professionals in the cultural heritage and to the third mission. The author describes the main activities related to the promotion of special collections in academic libraries, as third mission is highlighting their value for the general public and library stakeholders. One of the most relevant activity in order to promote a collection is the organization of exhibitions of ancient and rare books in library spaces: step by step the author describes the main challenges in projecting a collection exhibition in academic libraries, tackling with the aims, the costs, the staff, the communication plan, the competencies, and the administrative burdens necessary to organize it. In the second part of the article the author presents an assessment scheme to evaluate special collections in the perspective of the third mission in Italy. The scheme proceeds through three steps. The first step is the assessment of the external context and of the needs of the academic library publics; the second step involves the detailed analysis of the special collections’ profile; the third step is a qualitative and quantitative analysis to be carried out by gathering data and stories in order to highlight the social and historical value of the academic library for students, researchers and, last but not least, for the general public. In this article the author talks about the adaptive responses to the COVID-19 shutdown at the University of Washington Libraries Special Collections. It mentions that the creative and collective efforts of staff, online projects were developed with the remote resources at hand and staff were able to focus on projects such as data clean-up, transcription and enhancing finding aids.

Colorado State University Libraries has been creating digitized collections, primarily from its Archives and Special Collections unit, since 2000. These projects involved collaboration among Archives, Cataloging, and Digitization; the most recent and ambitious project, digitizing 13,000 historical images of the university dating from the 1880s into the 1930s, required closer collaboration than any previous project. The three authors, each with a distinctive role in the project, use this case study to illustrate and discuss in detail the different professional and technical skills and perspectives that each brought to the project and how they learned from each other.
