1. Interacting humans use forces in specific frequencies to exchange information by touch

Abstract

Object-mediated joint action is believed to be enabled by implicit information exchange between interacting individuals using subtle haptic signals within their interaction forces. The characteristics of these haptic signals have, however, remained unclear. Here we analyzed the interaction forces during an empirical dyadic interaction task using Granger-Geweke causality analysis, which allowed us to quantify the causal influence of each individual's forces on their partner's. We observed that the inter-partner influence was not the same at every frequency. Specifically, in the frequency band of [2.15-7] Hz, we observed inter-partner differences of causal influence that were invariant of the movement frequencies in the task and present only when information exchange was indispensable for task performance. Moreover, the interpartner difference in this frequency band was observed to be correlated with the task performance by the dyad. Our results suggest that forces in the [2.15-7] Hz band constitute task related information exchange between individuals during physical interactions.

2. Multisensory integration impacts coordination

Abstract

Behavioral benefits have been recently evidenced via multisensory integration process. Reaction times, detection or synchronization performances could be made more efficient by a bimodal stimulation than by its unimodal components. We questioned about the generalization of such results on a more challenging behavioral task. We used a well-known bimanual coordination task in which participants have to synchronize with audio, tactile or audio-tactile metronomes. Results show that according to the intrinsic parameters of the metronome, audio-tactile events could lead to higher coordination performance scores than its corresponding unimodal components.

Abstract

Elementary reactive behavior can be improved in the case of cross-modal sensory interactions thanks to underlying multisensory integration mechanisms. Can this benefit be generalized to a challenging ongoing perceptive-motor performance? We choose a juggling task to examine this question. A central issue wellknown in juggling lies in establishing and maintaining a specific temporal coordination among balls, hands, eyes and posture. Here, we tested whether providing additional timing information about the balls and hands motions by using external sound and tactile periodic stimulations improved the performance of jugglers. Results indicated that specific combination of auditory and tactile metronome led to a decrease of the spatiotemporal variability of the juggler’s performance. A contrario, degraded performances were obtained in the case of unimodal tactile metronome. We discuss these results in view of the understanding of the neuronal integration process implied in the audio-tactile interaction, and considering the well-known gating effect of movement on vibrotactile perception.

Abstract

Cell plasticity, or the ability of cells within a population to reversibly alter their phenotype, is an important feature of tissue homeostasis during processes such as wound healing and cancer. Plasticity operates alongside other sources of cell-to-cell heterogeneity such as genetic mutations and variation in signaling. Ultimately these processes prevent most cancer therapies from being curative. The predominant methods of quantifying tumor-drug response operate on snapshot population-level measurements and therefore lack evolutionary dynamics, which are particularly critical for dynamic processes such as plasticity. Here we apply a tree-based adaptation of a hidden Markov model (tHMM) that employs single cell lineages as input to learn the characteristic patterns of single cell heterogeneity and state transitions in an unsupervised fashion. This model enables single cell classification based on the phenotype of individual cells and their relatives for improved specificity in pinpointing the structure and dynamics of variability in drug response. Integrating this model with a modular interface for defining observed phenotypes allows the model to easily be adapted to any phenotype measured in single cells. To benchmark our model, we paired cell fate with either cell lifetimes or individual cell cycle phase lengths (G1 and S/G2) as our observed phenotypes on synthetic data and demonstrated that the model successfully classifies cells within experimentally tractable dataset sizes. As an application, we analyzed experimental measurements of cell fate and phase duration in cancer cell populations treated with chemotherapies to determine the number of distinct subpopulations. In total, this tHMM framework allows for the flexible classification of single cell heterogeneity across lineages.

Abstract

This feasibility study seeks to find the current problems in the office procedures of the Sales and Marketing Department, Credit Department and Human Resource Department of ABC Company. In this study, the researchers develop solutions to the existing problems and enhance the office procedure to make the process efficient and productive. Different methods were used in this study. The proponents conducted observations, interviews and surveys to obtain information about the current situation in the selected departments. An ocular visit was performed to observe the actual working condition of all the employees. Interview was also conducted among the selected employees to determine the existing problems they encountered inside their respective departments. Moreover, survey questionnaires were administered to gather views and opinions of the employees. All the employees who participated in this research strongly agreed that the existing problems in the selected departments include: 1) difficulties in delivering the orders of the client; 2) termination of employees without conducting an investigation and; 3) having the same process for new and regular clients. The researchers observed that the resources in the Sales and Marketing Department are not used well resulting to a number of complaints received from the clients. In Human Resource Department, the lack of thorough investigation before terminating an employee cannot be observed in the actual process ofter mination. Investigation is indeed a vital aspect for decision-making to avoid unjust treatment for both parties. The findings show that there is a need for enhancement in the current office procedure in all selected departments. In Sales and Marketing Department, the researchers propose to separate the delivery process from the existing procedure and create an improved process to avoid wrong deliveries. Abstract

Early identification of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) risk factors would aid development of interventions to delay the onset of dementia, but current biomarkers are invasive and/or costly to assess. Validated plasma biomarkers would circumvent these challenges. We previously identified the kinase DYRK1A in plasma. To validate DYRK1A as a biomarker for AD diagnosis, we assessed the levels of DYRK1A and the related markers brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and homocysteine in two unrelated AD patient cohorts with age-matched controls. Receiver-operating characteristic curves and logistic regression analyses showed that combined assessment of DYRK1A, BDNF and homocysteine has a sensitivity of 0.952, a specificity of 0.889 and an accuracy of 0.933 in testing for AD. The blood levels of these markers provide a diagnosis assessment profile. Combined assessment of these three markers outperforms most of the previous markers and could become a useful substitute to the current panel of AD biomarkers. These results associate a decreased level of DYRK1A with AD and challenge the use of DYRK1A inhibitors in peripheral tissues as treatment. These measures will be useful for diagnosis purposes.

Abstract

This study was carried out in the dense semi-deciduous production forest of East Cameroon. The objective of this work of this study was to provide comparative floristic knowledge that can serve as a basis for the planning and sustainable management of ligneous plant resources in Communal Forests before and after logging. Sampling was done in unlogged and logged forest. Data collection was carried out using the linear transects subdivided into 10 plots of 25 m × 20 m (500 m2) with an equidistance of 225 m for the inventory of all trees with dbh ≥10 cm installed measured at 1.3 m above ground level. Nested quadrats 5 m × 5 m, oriented south-west and north-east were set up in each plot for the counting and identification of all individuals with a diameter less than 10 cm. The analysis of inventory data showed that the floristic composition was higher in the unlogged forest. The individuals were more evenly distributed in the logged (Pielou's equitability index = 0.83) than in the unlogged forest. The study of the functional spectra showed that the flora of the two forest types was dominated by Guinean-Congolese species (67.57% in the unlogged forest and 63.07% in the logged forest) and Phanerophytes, particularly Mesophanerophytes. The dominance of sarcochorous species reveals that the main mode of dissemination in this forest is zoochory, particularly endozoochory. The presence of pleochroic species in the logged forest reveals the importance of dissemination by water in the environment. The plants surveyed were divided into five plant assemblages (three for logged forest and two for unlogged forest) based on ecological parameters. The findings of this study suggest that forest management which combines assisted natural regeneration with the natural process of secondary succession facilitates the reconstitution of the vegetation cover and, by extension, the conservation of biodiversity in post-logging forest concessions.

Abstract

The transcriptome is the readout of the genome. Identifying common features in it across distant species can reveal fundamental principles. To this end, the ENCODE and modENCODE consortia have generated large amounts of matched RNA-sequencing data for human, worm and fly. Uniform processing and comprehensive annotation of these data allow comparison across metazoan phyla, extending beyond earlier within-phylum transcriptome comparisons and revealing ancient, conserved features. Specifically, we discover co-expression modules shared across animals, many of which are enriched in developmental genes. Moreover, we use expression patterns to align the stages in worm and fly development and find a novel pairing between worm embryo and fly pupae, in addition to the embryo-to-embryo and larvae-to-larvae pairings. Furthermore, we find that the extent of non-canonical, non-coding transcription is similar in each organism, per base pair. Finally, we find in all three organisms that the gene-expression levels, both coding and non-coding, can be quantitatively predicted from chromatin features at the promoter using a â universal model' based on a single set of organism-independent parameters. © 2014 Macmillan Publishers Limited.

Abstract

We evaluated 25 protocol variants of 14 independent computational methods for exon identification, transcript reconstruction and expression-level quantification from RNA-seq data. Our results show that most algorithms are able to identify discrete transcript components with high success rates but that assembly of complete isoform structures poses a major challenge even when all constituent elements are identified. Expression-level estimates also varied widely across methods, even when based on similar transcript models. Consequently, the complexity of higher eukaryotic genomes imposes severe limitations on transcript recall and splice product discrimination that are likely to remain limiting factors for the analysis of current-generation RNA-seq data. Contains fulltext : 154094.pdf (publisher's version ) (Open Access), BACKGROUND: Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is an effective treatment for fatigue and disabilities in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). However, treatment capacity is limited. Providing web-based CBT and tailoring the amount of contact with the therapist to the individual needs of the patient may increase the efficiency of the intervention. Web-based CBT for adolescents with CFS has proven to be effective in reducing fatigue and increasing school attendance. In the proposed study the efficacy of a web-based CBT intervention for adult patients with CFS will be explored. Two different formats of web-based CBT will be tested. In the first format named protocol driven feedback, patients report on their progress and receive feedback from a therapist according to a preset schedule. In the second format named support on demand, feedback and support of the therapist is only given when patients ask for it. The primary objective of the study is to determine the efficacy of a web-based CBT intervention on fatigue severity. METHOD/DESIGN: A randomized clinical trial will be conducted. Two-hundred-forty adults who have been diagnosed with CFS according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) consensus criteria will be recruited and randomized to one of three conditions: web-based CBT with protocol driven feedback, web-based CBT with support on demand, or wait list. Feedback will be delivered by therapists specialized in CBT for CFS. Each of the web-based CBT interventions will be compared to a wait list condition with respect to its effect on the primary outcome measure; fatigue severity. Secondary outcome measures are level of disability, physical functioning, psychological distress, and the proportion of patients with clinical significant improvement in fatigue severity. Abstract

Identification of blood-based biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease (AD) remains a challenge. Neuropathological studies have identified enlarged endosomes in post-mortem brains as the earliest cellular change associated to AD. Here the presence of enlarged endosomes was investigated in peripheral blood mononuclear cells from 48 biologically defined AD patients (25 with mild cognitive impairment and 23 with dementia (AD-D)), and 23 age-matched healthy controls using immunocytochemistry and confocal microscopy. The volume and number of endosomes were not significantly different between AD and controls. However, the percentage of cells containing enlarged endosomes was significantly higher in the AD-D group as compared with controls. Furthermore, endosomal volumes significantly correlated to [C(11)]PiB cortical index measured by positron emission tomography in the AD group, independently of the APOE genotype, but not to the levels of amyloid-beta, tau and phosphorylated tau measured in the cerebrospinal fluid. Importantly, we confirmed the presence of enlarged endosomes in fibroblasts from six unrelated AD-D patients as compared with five cognitively normal controls. Abstract

The classic organization of a gene structure has followed the Jacob and Monod bacterial gene model proposed more than 50 years ago. Since then, empirical determinations of the complexity of the transcriptomes found in yeast to human has blurred the definition and physical boundaries of genes. Using multiple analysis approaches we have characterized individual gene boundaries mapping on human chromosomes 21 and 22. Analyses of the locations of the 5′ and 3′ transcriptional termini of 492 protein coding genes revealed that for 85% of these genes the boundaries extend beyond the current annotated termini, most often connecting with exons of transcripts from other well annotated genes. The biological and evolutionary importance of these chimeric transcripts is underscored by (1) the non-random interconnections of genes involved, (2) the greater phylogenetic depth of the genes involved in many chimeric interactions, (3) the coordination of the expression of connected genes and (4) the close in vivo and three dimensional proximity of the genomic regions being transcribed and contributing to parts of the chimeric RNAs. The non-random nature of the connection of the genes involved suggest that chimeric transcripts should not be studied in isolation, but together, as an RNA network.

Abstract

In this paper we analyze the concept of UnControlled Manifold (UCM), that consists in the kinematic variables that are not controlled by the user, being not relevant to the task. We proceed testing a set of controlled variables inspired by the literature about tracking task, then we propose a procedure to identify them on the basis of captured data. We are interested in the analysis of behavior in a Virtual Environment and in the real world. In particular we analyze the three ball cascade juggling and its simulation through a platform named Light Weight Juggling focusing on the task of ball tossing. Users arm kinematics is represented as a robotic manipulator with 7 degrees of freedom. Joint angles are retrieved through an optical tracking system. The variables controlled in the virtual environment are a subset of the ones controlled in the real world, that leads to an UM that differs from the one in the real world. A comparison between the statistics computed in the two cases is performed to explore behavioral differences in the two cases.

Abstract

This paper presents the training of juggling skills, a highly complex problem of coordination, under tight time and space constraints. This training is achieved with a simple training platform, a light weight juggling platform (LWJ), and is compared to training with real balls. The principle directing the design of the platform is to obtain a simple tool. The simplification, in comparison to real world juggling, is based on the identification of invariant properties in the spatiotemporal coordination of intermediate and expert jugglers. Two classes training solutions were added to the LWJ: An audio-tactile pacing or augmented multimodal environment, and the manipulation of cognitive components of the juggling skills. The transfer to juggling with real balls was evaluated in four different experiments.

Abstract

Titan’s haze is strongly suspected to be an HCN-derived polymer, but despite the first in situ measurements by the ESA-Huygens space probe, its chemical composition and formation process remain largely unknown. To investigate this question, we simulated in the laboratory, the atmospheric haze for- mation process. We synthesized analogues of Titan’s haze, named Titan tholins, in an irradiated N2–CH4 gas mixture, mimicking Titan’s upper atmosphere chemistry. HCN was monitored in situ in the gas phase simultaneously with the formation and evolution of the haze particles. We show that HCN is produced as long as the particles are absent, and is then progressively consumed when the particles appear and grow. This work highlights HCN as an effective precursor of Titan’s haze and confirms the HCN-derived polymer nature of the haze.

Abstract

Classical T Tauri Stars (CTTSs) are young stellar objects surrounded by a circumstellar disk with which they exchange mass and angular momentum through accretion. Despite this process is a crucial aspect of star formation, some issues are still not clear; in particular how the material loses angular momentum and falls into the star. CTTSs are also characterized by strong X-ray emission. Part of this X-ray emission comes from the heated plasma in the external regions of the stellar corona with temperature between 1 and 100 MK. The plasma heating is presumably due to the strong magnetic field (Feigelson and Montmerle, 1999) in the form of high energetic flares in proximity of the stellar surface. This energetic phenomena may influence the circumstellar environment. Recently, Reale et al. (2018) proved that long flares may connect the disk to the stellar surface. Moreover a study of Orlando et al. (2011) has shown that an intense flare close to the disk may strongly perturb its stability, inducing accretion episodes. Starting from these lines of evidence, here we investigate the effects of multiple flares with low-to-medium intensity on the disk stability, and check if they may be responsible for triggering accretion episodes. To this end, we developed a 3D magnetohydrodynamics model describing a CTTS surrounded by an accretion disk subject to intense flaring activity. The flares occur randomly in proximity of a thick disk. We found that the flaring activity determines the formation of a hot extended corona that links the disk to the stellar surface. In addition, the flares strongly perturb the disk and trigger accretion phenomena with a mass accretion rate comparable with those inferred by X-ray observations.
