This article seeks to discuss how religion affects gender inequality in Ghana. Religious teachings and beliefs play an important role in either promoting or hindering gender equality. Defining ‘‘religion’’ with a common definition has become a major enterprise for theologians. From the biblical perspective, the impact of females is rarely felt, due to the socio-cultural injunctions purported to have come from the Graeco-Roman world. The subjugation of women is still common in all spheres of life including Ghana and religion has a role to play in this phenomenon. Using the works of various scholars, this article explored the extent of the influence of religion on gender inequality from the Christian perspective. It was observed that despite its influence on social development, Religion has not promoted the needed gender equality in Ghana. The church and society, therefore, need to confront the issue of gender inequality and sanction women’s equality with their male counterparts. This article is an investigation of the role of women in the Kwadaso Area, Kumasi in the Ashanti Region of the Church of Pentecost (CoP) in Ghana. It is stimulated by the realisation that while many of the Mainline Churches, as well as the African Independent Churches and Charismatic Churches have created avenues for women to play key roles and ordaining some as ministers at various levels, the CoP does not ordain female ministers.This entrenched position of the CoP has made its leadership (pastoral responsibilities) a male-dominated one in the context of not allowing females to become either District Pastors or Area Heads or to be called into the full-time. This action of the church is similar to the patriarchal structures of the Jewish community. This study used both primary and secondary sources in the collection of data. The data collection consisted of interviews, questionnaires and observations to assess whether the CoP has cultural challenges when it comes to the appointment of women into leadership positions. It was observed that, the highest leadership position a woman would be allowed to occupy in the CoP was a Deaconess. Also, the CoP has not officially opened up to discussions on the need to create gender equality when it comes to the appointment of members into leadership positions. The study recommended that the CoP should open up to discussions on the issue since the status of women. Again, the CoP leadership should re-look its Constitution with regards to enrolling only males into the ordained ministry.This study adds to the existing literature on women’s empowerment in the African Church. This study aimed to examine Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Compliance in the Artisanal Small-Scale Gold Mining (ASGM) sector in Ghana with a focus on Adadiem and identify the challenges associated with it. A quantitative research method was employed and all 248 survey respondents were sampled. The study revealed a lack of compliance with OSH practices, and “hit by working tools” and slipping/falling were identified as the most common types of safety hazards leading to minor injuries in the ASGM industry. It was also observed that working tools and machinery are the main sources of injuries and mostly affect the legs, knees, and feet. The findings of the study indicate the presence of OSH breaches in the ASGM industry in the study area. It is therefore proposed that the government of Ghana create and enforce legislation that places stringent requirements on ASGM operators to ensure that they are meeting OSH standards and protecting the health and safety of their workers, and that policy tools such as fines, taxes, restrictions, and subsidies may be employed to promote compliance with safety requirements.

Many occupational settings located outdoors in direct sun, such as open cut mining, pose a health, safety, and productivity risk to workers because of their increased exposure to heat. This issue is exacerbated by climate change effects, the physical nature of the work, the requirement to work extended shifts and the need to wear protective clothing which restricts evaporative cooling. Adaptation and social protection strategies have become crucial to enhance workers’ health, safety, productive capacity and social lives. However, the effective implementation of work-related heat stress adaptation mechanisms appears to be receiving little attention. This study assessed the barriers to occupational heat stress adaptation and social protection strategies of mining workers in Ghana. Many factors including depletion of the forest, environmental awareness, and generation of large quantities of agro-forest residues have increased the need to partially or wholly replace wood with agro-forest residue for particleboard production. This study assessed the decay resistance of particleboards produced from four agro-forest residues using cassava starch and urea formaldehyde as adhesives. Musa paradisiaca pseudostem, Theobroma cacao stem and pod, and sawdust of Ceiba pentandra were used for the study. Properties determined were: Weight loss, decay resistance rating and decay susceptibility index. These properties were evaluated after 12 weeks of exposure to Coriolopsis polyzona in accordance with ASTM D 2017-05. The results indicate that the weight loss for Musa paradisiaca pseudostem particleboard was least for both urea formaldehyde and cassava starch adhesives. Even though almost all the particleboards produced were classified as resistant or highly resistant to fungi attack, those produced with urea formaldehyde had better decay resistance properties than that of cassava starch. Furthermore, particleboards coated with synthetic polyvinyl lacquer had better resistance to fungi attack than the uncoated ones. At 5% level of significance, the agro-forest residue, adhesive and surface finish as well as their interactions had significant effects on decay resistance of the particleboards produced. It is recommended that further studies which aim at determining the effect of combination of the agro-forest residues and that of urea formaldehyde and cassava starch be conducted to determine their effects on decay properties of particleboards.

This study investigated the possible use of four agro-forest residues generated in Ghana as an alternative raw material for particleboard manufacture using cassava starch and urea formaldehyde as adhesives. The particle size of the materials ranged from 0.5 mm to 1.5 mm. An industrial pressing machine was used to press the homogeneous single layer particleboard. Physical and mechanical properties were determined in accordance with ASTM D 1037-06a and ASTM D 7519-11. The results indicate that the density of the particleboards produced ranged from 421 kg/m3 to 598 kg/m3. The water absorption property of the particleboards also ranged from 7.66% to 22.41% and 18.17% to 59.46% for 2-hour and 24-hour immersions respectively. Additionally, the thickness swelling of the particleboards ranged from 3.38% to 5.03% and 9.37% to 21.49% for 2-hour, and 24-hour immersions respectively. The results further indicate that the modulus of elasticity, modulus of rupture, internal bond strength and hardness of the particleboards produced for both cassava starch and urea formaldehyde were adequate. Comparatively, for all the agro-forest materials used for this study, the physical and mechanical properties of the particleboards produced using urea formaldehyde as adhesive was better than those produced using cassava starch as adhesive. It could be concluded that the particleboards produced could be used for indoor applications or interior furnishings, under dry conditions. Additionally, it is recommended that further studies that combine cassava starch and urea formaldehyde as adhesives be conducted, as well as studies on combining plantain pseudostem and cocoa pod in particleboard production.

Adverse effects of occupational heat stress in the context of the changing climate on working populations are subtle but considerably harmful. However, social dimensions and impacts of climate change-related occupational heat concerns on workers' safety and health, productivity and well-being are often overlooked or relegated as minor issues in social impact analyses of occupational heat exposure due to climate change. This paper offers a conceptual framework based on an appraisal and synthesis of the literature on social impacts of climate change-related occupational heat exposure on workers' safety and health, productivity and social welfare and the quest to localise and achieve sustainable development goals. A sustained global, national, institutional and individual collaborative involvement and financial support for research, improved adaptation and social protection strategies, predominantly in the developing world, where a large number of people work outdoors, can reduce heat exposure and boost the resilience and adaptive capacity of workers to facilitate efforts to achieve sustainable development goals.

Background The Suboptimal Health Status Questionnaire-25 (SHS-Q-25) developed to measure Suboptimal Health Status has been used worldwide, but its construct validity has only been tested in the Chinese population. Applying Structural Equation Modelling, we investigate aspects of the construct validity of the SHS-Q-25 to determine the interactions between SHS subscales in a Ghanaian population. Methods The study involved healthy Ghanaian participants (n = 263; aged 20–80 years; 63% female), who responded to the SHSQ-25. In an exploratory factor and parallel analysis, the study extracted a new domain structure and compared to the established five-domain structure of SHSQ-25. A confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was conducted and the fit of the model further discussed. Invariance analysis was carried out to establish the consistency of the instrument across multi-groups. Results The extracted domains were reliable with Cronbach’s $$\alpha$$ α of 0.846, 0.820 and 0.864 respectively, for fatigue, immune-cardiovascular and cognitive. The CFA revealed that the model fit indices were excellent $$\left( {{\text{RMSEA}} = 0.049~ < ~0.08,\,{\text{CFI}} = 0.903 > 0.9,\,{\text{GFI}} = 0.880 < 0.9,\,{\text{TLI}} = 0.907 > 0.9} \right)$$ RMSEA = 0.049 < 0.08 , CFI = 0.903 > 0.9 , GFI = 0.880 < 0.9 , TLI = 0.907 > 0.9 . The fit indices for the three-domain model were statistically superior to the five-domain model. There were, however, issues of insufficient discriminant validity as some average variance extracts were smaller than the corresponding maximum shared variance. The three-domain model was invariant for all constrained aspects of the structural model across age, which is an important risk factor for most chronic diseases. Conclusion The validity tests suggest that the SHS-Q25 can measure SHS in a Ghanaian population. It can be recommended as a screening tool to early detect chronic diseases especially in developing countries where access to facilities is diminished.

The effect of the deposition strategy on wire + arc additive manufacture (WAAM) has been conducted for aluminium alloys. In this study, oscillation and parallel deposition strategies were considered for thicker section linear wall building. The results indicate that the deposition strategy has a significant effect on mechanical properties and hardness of the WAAM structure. Optimum ultimate tensile and yield strength were identified after post-deposition heat treatment for both strategies. From microstructure analysis, it was observed that walls produced by oscillation deposition strategy were characterised by equiaxed grains whilst parallel deposited walls were characterised by a mixed grain structure consisting of columnar and equiaxed grains. It was also observed that parallel deposited walls showed an increased number of pores as compared to walls deposited using oscillation strategy. Adequate adaptation policies and heat exposure management for workers are imperative to reduce heat stress risk, and improve productive capacity and the social health of mining workers.

Across the tropical developing countries, smallholder farmers are confronted with various climate related risks that hinge on agricultural activities. Climate change is predicted to impact smallholder farmers and their livelihood, especially within and beyond this century. Several studies have examined the impact of drought and rainfall on smallholder farmers as climate change impact assessment. However, there is limited information on impacts and coping strategies of poor farmers to heat exposure at household and farm level in tropical developing countries. As global temperature is predicted to increase with robust impacts on farmers in African region due to poverty and low adaptive capacity, this study evaluates how farmers in Bawku East of Northern Ghana experience the impacts of heat stress and how they cope with it both at the household level and on the field of cultivation. Using household survey and focus group discussion, the authors elicited impacts and responses of heat exposure from 308 resident farmers in three selected farming communities in Bawku East to gauge their vulnerability to heat exposure. Even though farmers have various impacts and coping strategies to heat exposure, these are ineffective to prevent them from heat related morbidity and mortality at both household and farm level. The study recommends the need for government led intervention to assist farmers in their effort to cope with heat stress as global temperatures will exacerbate heat stress impacts on small holder farmers especially in African region., Risk; Climate; Exposure; Farmers. Dimensions of risks and impacts of occupational heat stress due to climate change on workers' health and safety, productivity, and social well-being are significantly deleterious. Aside from empirical evidence, no systematic review exists for policy development and decision making in managing occupation heat stress impacts and adaptation strategies of workers. This study sought to synthesise evidence on the social impacts of occupational heat stress and adaptation strategies of workers. From a review of existing literature, eight categories were obtained from 25 studies and grouped into three syntheses: (1) awareness of occupational heat stress, (2) social impacts of occupational heat stress and (3) workers' adaptation to occupational heat stress due to changing climate. Awareness of occupational heat stress among workers varied and their social impacts were related to workers' health and safety, productivity and social well-being. Sustainable adaptation to occupation heat stress due to climate change hinges on financial resource availability. Adequate investment and research are required to develop and implement policies to combat the threat of rising temperature and climate change to enhance workers' adaptive capacity, boost resilience and foster sustainable development.

Ghana’s healthcare expenditure has increased over the past two decades. Increased healthcare expenditures are required to enhance the acquisition of better hospital resources that may improve healthcare. This study presents an overview of healthcare expenditures and health outcomes (i.e. infant mortality, under-5 mortality and life expectancy) from 1995 to 2014 in Ghana. Infant and under-5 mortalities have declined by 50 and 25%, respectively, as of 2014, while life expectancy has increased from 60.7 to 64.8 years. Private spending on health, especially out-of-pocket payments, declined but is higher than the World Health Organization’s recommended financial threshold. Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are rising with healthcare costs leading to catastrophically high healthcare expenditures in the future. While government’s investments on healthcare have yielded positive results, the improvement in the health outcomes cannot be attributed to increased health expenditure alone. Therefore, this paper outlines policies on maternal health, national health insurance and healthcare reforms that have influenced health outcomes. In parallel, the paper highlights challenges of the Ghana health system of which the major ones are (1) inadequate financial investments in health and (2) limited health workforce and facilities. These challenges can be ameliorated by (1) establishing new health institutions and expanding existed ones; (2) providing incentives to discourage the exodus of health workers; (3) introduction of the concept of predictive, preventive and personalized medicine (PPPM) for treating NCDs; and (4) alternative insurance schemes for vulnerable groups. This, coupled with the will of the government to curb misappropriation of funds, will be important to achieving better health outcomes.

Health workers are prone to burnout, which can have an adverse effect on their person and the patients to whom care is offered. The goal of this paper was to assess the levels of burnout experienced by healthcare workers in Accra, Ghana. The study was conducted using the cross-sectional study design. Questionnaires were used to obtain data from 365 respondents who worked in 12 major healthcare facilities. Data obtained were analyzed with SPSS version 23. Majority of the respondents were females (56.7%) as against males (43.3%). The total score for all burnout variables among health worker groups ranged from good (71.50%), alarming (12.60%), acute crisis (6.02%), and burnout (9.90%). Among the health worker groups, nurses had the highest percentage score values for all burnout variables. There was an association between burnout and these sociodemographic characteristics: age (p<0.001), gender (p=0.003), educational qualification (p<0.001), occupation (p<0.001), years of work experience (p<0.001), marital status (p<0.001), and parenthood (having children) (p<0.001). It is recommended that measures should be put in place in Ghanaian hospitals to assess stress and burnout levels to ensure people who are going through such situations are properly cared and supported.

Branchwood is being exploited as a supplement to stemwood in wood products manufacturing, and the wood’s bending strength properties are vital for structural and non-structural applications. Non-destructive methods are being adopted in determining wood properties, and wood density and moisture content are two variables that could be useful. This study assessed the influence of density and moisture content (MC) on the Modulus of Elasticity (MOE) and Modulus of Rupture (MOR) of branch and stem woods of Entandrophragma cylindricum (sapele) tested at two moisture levels (10 ± 4% MC and 17 ± 3% MC). Density was determined in accordance with ISO 3131. To determine bending strength properties, BS 373 was followed, using an INSTRON TCM Machine with a crosshead speed of 6.6 mm per minute. Results indicated that branchwood has higher density than its stemwood counterparts. MOE and MOR of both wood types were significantly higher at 10 ± 4% MC than their counterparts at 17 ± 3% MC. Environmental health hazards faced by farmers, such as exposure to extreme heat stress, are a growing concern due to global climate change, particularly in tropical developing countries. In such environments, farmers are considered to be a population at risk of environmental heat exposure. The situation is exacerbated due to their farming methods that involve the use of primitive equipment and hard manual labour conducted in full sunshine under hot and humid conditions. However, there is inadequate information about the extent of heat exposure to such farmers, both at the household and farm levels. This paper presents results from a study assessing environmental heat exposure on rural smallholder farmers in Bawku East, Northern Ghana. From January to December 2013, Lascar USB temperature and humidity sensors and a calibrated Questemp heat stress monitor were deployed to farms and homes of rural farmers at Pusiga in Bawku East to capture farmers' exposure to heat stress in both their living and working environments as they executed regular farming routines. The Lascar sensors have the capability to frequently, accurately and securely measure temperature and humidity over long periods. The Questemp heat stress monitor was placed in the same vicinity and showed strong correlations to Lascar sensors in terms of derived values of wet-bulb globe temperature (WBGT). The WBGT in the working environment of farmers peaked at 33.0 to 38.1 °C during the middle of the day in the rainy season from March to October and dropped to 14.0-23.7 °C in the early morning during this season. A maximum hourly WBGT of 28.9-37.5 °C (March-October) was recorded in the living environment of farmers, demonstrating little relief from heat exposure during the day. With these levels of heat stress, exposed farmers conducting physically demanding outdoor work risk suffering serious health consequences. The sustainability of manual farming practices is also under threat by such high levels of heat exposure.

Heavy physical workload for long hours coupled with increasing workplace heat exposure due to rising temperatures stemming from climate change, especially where there are inadequate prevention and control policies, adversely affect workers' health and safety, productive capacity and social well-being. However, variations in workers' concerns and awareness of occupational heat stress and climate change risks impede the effectiveness of heat stress management. A mixed method approach was used to assess climate change perceptions and occupational heat stress risks and adaptation strategies of Ghanaian mining workers. Questionnaires and focus group discussions were used to collect data from 320 respondents. Quantitative and qualitative approaches were used for data analysis. Workers' climate change risk perception, as confirmed by trends in climate data, was reasonable, but concerns about climate change effects and workplace heat exposure risks varied significantly across types of mining activity (p 0.001). Workers experienced heat-related morbidities, but the variation in heat-related morbidity experiences across the type of mining activity was not significant. However, the type of heat-related morbidities experienced by workers differed across the type of mining activity (p 0.001). Workers' awareness of occupational heat stress prevention and control was adequate. The disparities in workers' awareness and use of the prevention and control measures significantly differed across the type of mining activity (p 0.001). Occupational heat stress prevention activities should focus on workers, and a concerted effort must be made to promote workers' adaptive capacity and inform policy decisions.

Increasing air temperatures as a result of climate change are worsening the impact of heat exposure on working populations, including mining workers, who are at risk of suffering heat-related illnesses, injury and death. However, inadequate awareness of climate change-related occupational heat stress risks and adaptation strategies have been shown to render occupational heat stress management ineffective. A concurrent mixed-methods approach was used to assess the perceptions of climate change and occupational heat stress risks and adaptation strategies of mining workers among supervisory personnel and other stakeholders in Ghana. Questionnaires and interviews were used to elicit data from 19 respondents. Data were processed and interpreted using descriptive statistics, chi-square and Fisher's exact tests, and thematic analysis. Supervisors' climate change risks perception was adequate, and their concern about workplace heat exposure risks was moderate. Mining workers' occupational heat stress risks experiences were linked to heat-related illness and minor injuries. Mining workers' adaptation strategies included water intake, use of cooling mechanisms, work-break practices, and clothing use. The related differences in job experience in the distribution of climate change risk perception and occupational heat stress risk experiences, and the difference in educational attainment in the distribution of adaptation strategies of occupational heat stress were significant (p 0.05). Hence, an effective workplace heat management policy requires adequate understanding of occupational heat stress risks and adaptation policies and continued education and training for mining workers.

The fuel potential of six tropical hardwood species namely: Triplochiton scleroxylon, Ceiba pentandra, Aningeria robusta, Terminalia superba, Celtis mildbreadii and Piptadenia africana were studied. Properties studied included species density, gross calorific value, volatile matter, ash content, organic carbon and elemental composition. Fuel properties were determined using standard laboratory methods. The result indicates that the gross calorific value (GCV) of the species ranged from 20.16 to 22.22 MJ/kg and they slightly varied from each other. Additionally, the GCV of the biomass materials were higher than that of other biomass materials like; wheat straw, rice straw, maize straw and sugar cane. The ash and volatile matter content varied from 0.6075 to 5.0407%, and 75.23% to 83.70% respectively. The overall rating of the properties of the six biomass materials suggested that Piptadenia africana has the best fuel property to be used as briquettes and Aningeria robusta the worse. This study therefore suggests that a holistic assessment of a biomass material needs to be done before selecting it for fuel purpose.

This study examined the relationship between selected physico-mechanical properties, compacting pressure and mixing proportion of briquettes produced from combination of maize cob particles and sawdust of low, medium and high density timber species. Particle sizes of maize cobs and sawdust used for the study were ≤1 mm. The two materials were combined at mixing percentages of 90:10, 70:30 and 50:50 (Sawdust:maize cobs). Briquettes were produced at room temperature (28°C) using compacting pressures 20, 30, 40 and 50 MPa. The results suggested that combining maize cob particles with sawdust of low, medium and high density wood species could significantly enhance the relaxed density, compressive strength in cleft and impact resistance index of briquettes produced from agricultural biomass residue like maize cobs. The results further indicated that the physical and mechanical characteristics of briquettes produced from combinations of sawdust of low density species and maize cobs were exceptionally higher than that produced from combinations of maize cob particles, and medium density and high density timber species. The R2 values for the regression model between the independent variables (mixing percentage and compacting pressure) and relaxed density, compressive strength in cleft and impact resistance index of briquettes produced from combinations of maize cob particles and sawdust of low density species (Ceiba pentandra) were 0.966, 0.932 and 0.710 respectively. This study provides a hope for briquetting maize cobs at room temperature using a low compacting pressure.

As log costs increases as a result of increasing demand for wood products with a corresponding poor management of forest resource it has become more critical to obtain the maximum yield of useful product from each tree in order to sustain the wood industry. This work looks at the effect of the accuracy of side clearance of band saw teeth on the surface quality of sawn lumber as well as the level of adherence to quality standards when sawing Triplochiton scleroxylon (Wawa). The results obtained from the relationship between the accuracy of side clearance of band saw teeth and surface quality of sawn lumber indicates that there is a strong linear relationship between the two parameters. That is as the standard deviation of the side clearance of the band saw teeth decreases the surface quality of the sawn lumber becomes better. The correlation coefficient and coefficient of determination values for the two variables, that is, the accuracy of side clearance of the band saw teeth and the surface quality of the sawn lumber were -0.9042 and 0.8176 respectively. These values show that about 82% of the variations of the surface quality of the sawn lumber is influenced by the standard deviation of the side clearance of the band saw teeth. A graph of the relationship between the surface quality of the sawn lumber and standard deviation shows that on the average when the standard deviation of the side clearance of the band saw teeth is 0.225mm or low the surface quality of the sawn lumber produced could be qualitatively classified as good, very good or excellent. The result also indicated that the surface quality of the sawn lumber was excellent when the standard deviation of the side clearance of the band saw teeth was 0.07mm or low and was poor or very poor when the standard deviation of the side clearance was 0.252mm or more. A statistical control chart of sampled boards from the production process of the mill used for the study indicated that the mean thickness of the sawn boards was 42.42mm. The upper and lower control limits at 1.65 standard deviation were 44.08mm and 40.76mm respectively. The result indicates that about 15% of the total boards sampled were outside the control limits of the chart. The mean thickness of the sawn lumber at the mill for the study was 42.42mm as against nominal thickness of 41.00mm. This will result in a loss of about 3.46% timber for every board sawn and a subsequent loss of about 3.46m3 for every 100m3 of sawn lumber produced. Scenario analysis was used to investigate whether incurring extra costs towards adding value to lumber through further processing is an economically viable venture or not. In-factory study, observations, records review and interviews were used to collect data on costs and incomes relating to lumber and furniture production and exports. The accounting rule for decisions to sell or further process a semi-processed product at the split-off-point was used to assess the profit level under each of five scenarios developed. Results revealed that, it costs €1,336 (66.80% of FOB value/m3 of furniture) to convert kiln-dried lumber to 1m3 of garden furniture which yields income of €2,073.13/m3. Scenario analyses indicated that, 1m3 of garden furniture in general could yield additional incomes in the range of €66.077 to €334.414 representing 12.4% and 62.7% respectively over the export values of lumber used. Three species (odum, mixed redwood and teak) were profitable with mixed redwood and teak respectively obtaining the highest (from 48.14% to 123.63%) and the lowest (from 37.59% to 9.44%) additional profits in relation to the FOB value of their kiln-dried lumber. In conclusion, maintaining costs and increasing production volumes appeared to be the best scenario for higher profits in furniture production. Also, further processing lumber to garden furniture for export appear profitable and should be encouraged as an economic decision towards high revenue generation. It was recommended that the three profitable wood species should be considered for plantations by stakeholders in the afforestation and reforestation of degraded forests in Ghana to ensure their continuous availability for the furniture industry.

Extensive analyses of trends in mean annual and mean seasonal minimum and maximum temperatures and relative humidity were examined for Bawku East, northern Ghana, for the period 1961 to 2012. Mean monthly maximum and minimum temperatures were used to analyse and establish recent temperature trends on an annual and seasonal basis. The year was divided into rainy and dry seasons for the seasonal trends. Mean monthly relative humidity at 6 am and 3 pm from 1961 to 2012 were considered to show recent trends in humidity since temperature and humidity interact to determine the heat exposure for outdoor workers. Regression analysis was used to illustrate trends and calculate mean yearly and seasonal rate of change. A Durbin-Watson statistical test was employed to verify autocorrelation of the residuals of the trend models and none was detected. Results showed a gradual and statistically significant rise in both mean minimum and mean maximum temperatures at two stations (Manga and Garu). There was an inconsistent pattern of trend observed at the third station (Binduri). Declining trends in relative humidity were observed at 6 am and 3 pm at seasonal and annual levels at Binduri and Garu, while there was a rising trend in relative humidity at Manga. The importance of this study hinges on the linkage between heat exposure (temperature and air humidity) and human health in the wake of climate change on outdoor farmers in developing countries who spend many hours doing manual work in the heat. On the whole, the rising temperature has impacted on ecosystem services in the study area.

Densification of biomass waste materials has provided a great boost to the utilization of wood and agricultural waste for domestic and industrial fuel. However, the processes involved in the production of this fuel make it more expensive than fossil fuel. This is because densification of wood waste into fuel briquettes is not simple. This paper reports the results of research conducted to determine the effect of species, particle size and compacting pressure on relaxed density and compressive strength in cleft of briquettes produced from sawdust of tropical hardwoods. Briquettes were made using a laboratory hydraulic press. Compacting pressure was varied from 10 to 50 MPa at an interval of 10 MPa. Species used were Triplochiton scleroxylon, Ceiba pentandra, Aningeria robusta, Terminalia superba, Celtis mildbreadii and Piptadenia africana. The results indicate that species, compacting pressure and particle size of sawdust at 5% level of significance have significant effect on the relaxed density and compressive strength in cleft of briquettes produced. The multiple correlation coefficient (R) and adjusted R 2 for the regression model between relaxed density of briquettes, and species density, particle size and compacting pressure were 0.93 and 0.87, respectively. Additionally, the multiple correlation coefficient and adjusted R 2 for the regression model between compressive strength of briquettes, and species density, particle size and compacting pressure were 0.83 and 0.69, respectively. The regression models suggest that species density, particle size and compacting pressure are good predictors of relaxed density and compressive strength in cleft of briquettes produced from sawdust of tropical hardwoods.

This paper reports the findings of densifying ground maize cobs and Ceiba pentandra sawdust at room temperature using low compacting pressure without a binder. The maize cobs were crushed using a hammer mill. Particle sizes of maize cobs and C. pentandra used for the study were ≤1 mm. The two materials were combined at mixing percentages of 90:10, 70:30 and 50:50 (C. pentandra/maize cobs). Briquettes were produced using a laboratory hydraulic press. Compacting pressure was varied from 20 to 50 MPa at an interval of 10 MPa. The results indicated that the relaxed density of briquettes produced from particles of maize cobs only ranged from 541 to 659 kg/m 3 whilst that made from a mixture of maize cobs and C. pentandra ranged from 565 to 774 kg/m 3 . Compressive strength in cleft of briquettes produced from maize cobs only ranged from 0.12 to 0.54 N/mm whilst that produced from a combination of maize cobs and C. pentandra ranged from 7.72 to 59.22 N/mm. Additionally, at all compacting pressure levels, briquettes made from maize cobs only had an impact resistance index of 0%. Whilst those made from a combination of maize cobs and C. pentandra ranged from 115% to 500%. Thus, briquettes with adequate physical and mechanical characteristics could be produced from maize cobs at room temperature using low compacting pressure when maize cobs are combined with sawdust of C. pentandra. These findings could enhance the existing technology for densifying agricultural residues, for example, maize cobs, especially in rural communities.
