The in-vessel retention through external reactor vessel cooling (IVR-ERVC) strategy is a key management strategy for early termination of a nuclear severe accident that can threaten the integrity of the reactor vessel. To simulate the physical phenomena of the molten corium, the smoothed particle hydrodynamic (SPH) method is utilized in this study. The SPH method is a Lagrangian computational fluid dynamic (CFD) method that can simulate multi-fluid stratification, turbulence, natural circulation, radiative heat transfer, thermal ablation, and crust formation. To address the external vessel cooling, it is coupled with a conventional 1-D nuclear system analysis method. The 1-D system analysis code can calculate the two-phase natural circulation of cooling water and the convective heat transfer on the external reactor vessel wall. These two simulation codes exchange the temperature and heat flux of the reactor vessel outer wall. This study numerically simulated the IVR-ERVC strategy for a Korean high-power reactor and compared it with the traditional lumped parameter method (LPM). Unlike LPM, this study provides localized detailed data about the thermal hydraulic behavior of molten corium and visualization of phenomena in the IVR-ERVC strategy. This enhances our understanding of the phenomena in IVR-ERVC strategy and introduces new perspectives.

This paper presents the finite element deformation and failure simulation of a typical Korean high-power reactor vessel under a severe accident characterized by large break loss of coolant (LBLOCA) with in-vessel retention of molten corium through external reactor vessel cooling (IVR-ERVC) conditions. Temperature distributions calculated using Modular Accident Analysis Program Version 5 (MAAP5) as thermal boundary conditions were used, and ABAQUS thermal and structural analyses were performed. After full ablation, the temperature of the inner surface in the thinnest section remained high (920 °C), but the stress remained relatively low (less than 6 MPa). At the outer surface, the stress was as high as 250 MPa; however, the resulting plastic strain was small owing to the low temperature of 200 °C. Variations in stress, inelastic strain, and temperature with time in the thinnest section suggest that the plastic and creep strains are saturated owing to stress relaxation, resulting in low cumulative damage. Thus, the lower head of the vessel can maintain its structural integrity under LBLOCA with IVR-ERVC conditions. The sensitivity analysis of internal pressure indicates the occurrence of failure in the thinnest section at an internal pressure >9.6 MPa via local necking followed by failure due to high stresses.

This paper proposes a combined plastic and creep constitutive model of A533B1 pressure vessel steel to simulate progressive deformation of nuclear pressure vessels under severe accident conditions. To develop the model, recent tensile test data covering a wide range of temperatures (from RT to 1,100 °C) and strain rates (from 0.001%/s to 1.0%/s) was used. Comparison with experimental data confirms that the proposed combined plastic and creep model can well reflect effects of temperature and strain rate on tensile behaviour up to failure. In the companion paper (Part II), the proposed model will be used to simulate OECD lower head failure (OLHF) test data.

This paper proposes strain-based failure model of A533B1 pressure vessel steel to simulate failure, followed by application to OECD lower head failure (OLHF) test simulation for experimental validation. The proposed strain-based failure model uses simple constant and linear functions based on physical failure modes with the critical strain value determined either using the lower bound of true fracture strain or using the average value of total elongation depending on the temperature. Application to OECD Lower Head Failure (OLHF) tests shows that progressive deformation, failure time and failure location can be well predicted.

In a pressurized water reactor (PWR) during a loss of coolant accident (LOCA) or a station blackout (SBO) accident, water and steam are released into the containment building. The water vapor mixes with the atmosphere, partially condensing into droplets or condensing on the containment walls. Although a significant amount of water vapor condenses, it coexists with hydrogen generated by the reactor core oxidation. As water vapor condenses, the volume fraction of hydrogen increases, raising the risk of explosion or flame acceleration. As such, water vapor’s behavior directly affects hydrogen distribution. To conservatively evaluate hydrogen safety in a PWR during a severe accident, lumped-parameter codes have been heavily used. As a best-estimate approach for hydrogen safety analysis in a PWR containment, a turbulence-resolved CFD code called contain3D has been developed. This paper presents the validation results of the code and simulation results of hydrogen behavior affected by water vapor condensation and hydrogen removal by passive autocatalytic recombiners (PARs) in the APR1400 containment. The results provide insight into the three-dimensional behaviors of the hydrogen in the containment.

The potential for recriticality and sub-critical boron concentrations is analyzed during the relocation of the fuel rods in the assembly, which we call late phase of a severe accident, via coupling between MELCOR and whole-core Monte Carlo analyses by Serpent 2. The recriticality, initiated during the early phase, is found to maintain when the fuel assemblies containing intact fuel rods are submerged by the cooling water. It is also found that the effect of the negative reactivity insertion via remaining fission products in the fuel debris increases as the burnup increases. The sub-critical boron concentrations during the late phase are found to be 76∼544 ppm lower than those during the early phase. Therefore, it can be concluded that the boron concentration that prevents recriticality not only during the early phase but also during the late phase is the sub-critical boron concentration during the early phase.

For severe accident assessment of reactor pressure vessel (RPV), it is important to develop an accurate model that can predict transient thermo-mechanical behavior of the RPV lower head under the given condition. The present study revisits the lower head failure with two- and three-dimensional finite element models. In particular, we aim to give clear insight regarding the effect of the three-dimensionality present in the distribution of the thickness and thermal load of the lower head. For a rigorous validation of the result, both the OLHF-1 and the OLHF-2 tests are considered in this study. The result suggests that the three-dimensional effect is not negligible as far as the failure location is concerned. The non-uniformity of the thickness distribution is found to affect the failure location and time. The thermal load, which may not be axisymmetric in general, has the most significant effect on the failure assessment. We also observe that the creep property can affect the global deformation of the lower head, depending on the applied mechanical load.

In this paper, we select important fission products for the estimation of the source term during a severe accident of a PWR. The selection is based on the numerical results obtained from depletion calculations for the typical PWR fuel via the in-house code named DEGETION (Depletion, Generation, and Transmutation of Isotopes on Nuclear Application), release fractions of the fission products derived from NUREG-1465, and effective dose conversion coefficients from ICRP 119. Then, for the selected fission products, we obtain the adjoint solutions of the Bateman equations for radioactive decay in order to determine the importance of precursors producing the aforementioned fission products via radioactive decay, which would provide insights into the assumption used in MACCS 2 for a level 3 PSA analysis in which up to six precursors are considered in the calculations of radioactive decays for the fission product after release from the reactor.

The rupturing of steam generator tubes leads to serious accidents in nuclear power plants. It causes radioactive materials to leak into the secondary system and release outside the reactor containment region. Therefore, it is important to model a technique to determine whether the natural circulation within a reactor coolant system (RCS) can cause rupture. In this study, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis methodology was incorporated as a first step to establish an RCS natural circulation evaluation technique to generate RCS natural circulation input parameters for the MELCOR analysis of thermally induced steam generator tube rupture (TI-SGTR) in nuclear power plants. Benchmarking tests were conducted against existing experimental studies; the results demonstrated a difference of 9.4% or less between the experimental and CFD analysis results with respect to the main evaluation factors. Subsequently, a steam generator tube simplification modeling technique was established for application to nuclear power plants, and CFD analysis was conducted to determine its applicability. The CFD analysis results revealed that when numerous tubes are simplified into one equivalent tube, the thermal flow characteristics generated in the RCS could be distorted. The findings of this research are expected to be helpful in understanding the thermal flow characteristics of natural circulation in the RCS. Further, the findings may potentially serve as a foundation for future CFD analysis research related to the natural circulation in the RCS of nuclear power plants.
