1. Motion Capture Analysis of Verb and Adjective Types in Austrian Sign Language

Abstract

Across a number of sign languages, temporal and spatial characteristics of dominant hand articulation are used to express semantic and grammatical features. In this study of Austrian Sign Language (\"Osterreichische Geb\"ardensprache, or \"OGS), motion capture data of four Deaf signers is used to quantitatively characterize the kinematic parameters of sign production in verbs and adjectives. We investigate (1) the difference in production between verbs involving a natural endpoint (telic verbs; e.g. arrive) and verbs lacking an endpoint (atelic verbs; e.g. analyze), and (2) adjective signs in intensified vs. non-intensified (plain) forms. Motion capture data analysis using linear-mixed effects models (LME) indicates that both the endpoint marking in verbs, as well as marking of intensification in adjectives, are expressed by movement modulation in \"OGS. While the semantic distinction between verb types (telic/atelic) is marked by higher peak velocity and shorter duration for telic signs compared to atelic ones, the grammatical distinction (intensification) in adjectives is expressed by longer duration for intensified compared to non-intensified adjectives. 2. Neural mechanisms of Event Visibility in sign languages

Abstract

Event structure in sign languages is reflected in the manual dynamics of verb production. As signed event structure is visible (iconic), non-signers are able to recognize it, despite having no sign lexicon. In this EEG study, hearing non-signers were presented with telic and atelic verb signs, followed by a lexical classification task in their native language. Behavioral data confirmed that non-signers classified both telic and atelic signs with above-chance accuracy. ERP waveforms indicated that non-signers identified the perceptual differences in motion features when viewing telic/atelic signs, and used different processing mechanisms when integrating the perceptual information with linguistic concepts in their native language. Non-signers appeared to segment visual sign language input into discrete events, as they attempted to map the observed visual forms to concepts, and label them linguistically. This mechanism suggests a potential evolutionary pathway for co-optation of perceptual features into the linguistic structure of sign languages.

3. Application of machine learning to signal entrainment identifies predictive processing in sign language.

Abstract

We present the first analysis of multi-frequency neural entrainment to dynamic visual features which drives sign language comprehension. Using the measure of EEG coherence to optical flow in video stimuli, we are able to classify fluent signers’ brain states as denoting online language comprehension, or non-comprehension during watching of non-linguistic videos that are equivalent in low-level spatiotemporal features and high-level scene parameters. The data also indicates that lower frequencies, such as 1 Hz and 4 Hz, contribute substantially to brain state classification, indicating relevance of neural coherence to the signal at these frequencies to language comprehension. These findings suggest that fluent signers rely on predictive processing during online comprehension.

4. Event visibility in sign language motion: Evidence from Austrian Sign Language (ÖGS)

Abstract

This is the first kinematic investigation of articulator motion in Austrian Sign Language, which connects kinesiology of sign production and linguistic markers of Aktionsart in the native language of the Deaf community in Austria. Our work used a 3D motion capture approach to sign language analysis to investigate the relationship between the semantics (event structure) of signed verbs, and kinematics of hand articulator movement. The data indicates that the underlying semantics of events in verb signs is reflected in sign duration and acceleration of the dominant hand during sign production. The finding that articulator dynamics (acceleration and deceleration of hand motion) characterizes the event structure in verb signs has significance for linguistic theory of visual communication, and understanding of the relationship between iconicity in sign language, and perceptual biases in meaning construction based on visual input.

7. Self-harm among inmates of the Berlin prison system.

Abstract

Introduction: Self-harming behavior in prisoners is a prevalent phenomenon, with international studies estimating a 4% prevalence rate. However, studies on self-injurious behavior in the German prison system are currently lacking. Therefore, our study aims to conduct an initial assessment. Methods: The Criminological Service for the Berlin Prison System distributed questionnaires on incidents of self-harm to all Berlin prisons, except for juvenile detention centers. The questionnaires were supplemented with medical data, such as psychiatric diagnoses and medication. Results: 62 questionnaires were returned, which could be attributed to 52 inmates. Compared to the average population in the Berlin prison system, the study sample exhibited variations in age, gender distribution and nationality. 94% of the inmates received a psychiatric diagnosis. Two-thirds of the male inmates had substance use disorders, while 83% of the female inmates had emotionally unstable personality resp. borderline disorders. Prior to self-harm, 87% of the inmates were administered psychiatric medication. Discussion: Our study found similarities between the study population and international studies in the distribution of certain characteristics. We assume that many of the postulated risk factors can also apply to Berlin prisoners. However, the study is limited by the small number of cases and the absence of a control group. This paper reviews best practices for experimental design and analysis for sign language research using neurophysiological methods, such as electroencephalography (EEG) and other methods with high temporal resolution, as well as identifies methodological challenges in neurophysiological research on natural sign language processing. In particular, we outline the considerations for generating linguistically and physically well-controlled stimuli accounting for 1) the layering of manual and non-manual information at different timescales, 2) possible unknown linguistic and non-linguistic visual cues that can affect processing, 3) variability across linguistic stimuli, and 4) predictive processing. Two specific concerns with regard to the analysis and interpretation of observed event related potential (ERP) effects for dynamic stimuli are discussed in detail. First, we discuss the “trigger/effect assignment problem”, which describes the difficulty of determining the time point for calculating ERPs. This issue is related to the problem of determining the onset of a critical sign (i.e., stimulus onset time), and the lack of clarity as to how the border between lexical (sign) and transitional movement (motion trajectory between individual signs) should be defined. Second, we discuss possible differences in the dynamics within signing that might influence ERP patterns and should be controlled for when creating natural sign language material for ERP studies. In addition, we outline alternative approaches to EEG data analyses for natural signing stimuli, such as the timestamping of continuous EEG with trigger markers for each potentially relevant cue in dynamic stimuli. Throughout the discussion, we present empirical evidence for the need to account for dynamic, multi-channel, and multi-timescale visual signal that characterizes sign languages in order to ensure the ecological validity of neurophysiological research in sign languages.

Abstract

Earthworms are an important soil taxon as ecosystem engineers, providing a variety of crucial ecosystem functions and services. Little is known about their diversity and distribution at large spatial scales, despite the availability of considerable amounts of local-scale data. Earthworm diversity data, obtained from the primary literature or provided directly by authors, were collated with information on site locations, including coordinates, habitat cover, and soil properties. Datasets were required, at a minimum, to include abundance or biomass of earthworms at a site. Where possible, site-level species lists were included, as well as the abundance and biomass of individual species and ecological groups. This global dataset contains 10,840 sites, with 184 species, from 60 countries and all continents except Antarctica. The data were obtained from 182 published articles, published between 1973 and 2017, and 17 unpublished datasets. Abstract

Earthworms are an important soil taxon as ecosystem engineers, providing a variety of crucial ecosystem functions and services. Little is known about their diversity and distribution at large spatial scales, despite the availability of considerable amounts of local-scale data. Earthworm diversity data, obtained from the primary literature or provided directly by authors, were collated with information on site locations, including coordinates, habitat cover, and soil properties. Datasets were required, at a minimum, to include abundance or biomass of earthworms at a site. Where possible, site-level species lists were included, as well as the abundance and biomass of individual species and ecological groups. This global dataset contains 10,840 sites, with 184 species, from 60 countries and all continents except Antarctica. The data were obtained from 182 published articles, published between 1973 and 2017, and 17 unpublished datasets. Amalgamating data into a single global database will assist researchers in investigating and answering a wide variety of pressing questions, for example, jointly assessing aboveground and belowground biodiversity distributions and drivers of biodiversity change.

Abstract

Earthworms are an important soil taxon as ecosystem engineers, providing a variety of crucial ecosystem functions and services. Little is known about their diversity and distribution at large spatial scales, despite the availability of considerable amounts of local-scale data. Earthworm diversity data, obtained from the primary literature or provided directly by authors, were collated with information on site locations, including coordinates, habitat cover, and soil properties. Datasets were required, at a minimum, to include abundance or biomass of earthworms at a site. Where possible, site-level species lists were included, as well as the abundance and biomass of individual species and ecological groups. This global dataset contains 10,840 sites, with 184 species, from 60 countries and all continents except Antarctica. The data were obtained from 182 published articles, published between 1973 and 2017, and 17 unpublished datasets. Amalgamating data into a single global database will assist researchers in investigating and answering a wide variety of pressing questions, for example, jointly assessing aboveground and belowground biodiversity distributions and drivers of biodiversity change.

Abstract

This study focuses on the distribution of agrm-bc, one of two agreement markers used in Austrian Sign Language (ÖGS; Krebs, Julia, Ronnie B. Wilbur & Dietmar Roehm. 2017. Two agreement markers in ÖGS. Sign Language and Linguistics 20(1). 2754), with respect to different “verb types”. Using an online questionnaire, ÖGS signers rated ÖGS sentences involving different verb types that varied in whether they show agreement with their arguments (“agreeing” with two arguments, “plain” with none or only one) and if so, how (movement from subject to object, backwards from object to subject and/or facing towards object). Thus, the verbs differ in the degree and form of expressing agreement. In addition, these verbs either appeared with or without agrm-bc. Data analysis revealed that the combination of inflected agreeing verbs and the agreement marker (“double agreement”) is acceptable in ÖGS. If the verb itself does not indicate full agreement (i.e., as in plain verbs) agrm-bc can, but does not have to, be used to indicate the argument structure. Independently, whether the verb showed full agreement marking (movement and facing) or only facing did not influence the acceptability of the occurrence of agrm-bc. The relatively high ratings for the combination of agrm-bc with different verb types suggests that agrm-bc functions as a general agreement marker in ÖGS. (VLID)5530852

Abstract

The preference of the human parser for interpreting syntactically ambiguous sentence-initial arguments as the subject of a clause (i.e. subject preference) has been documented for spoken and sign languages. Recent research (He, 2016) suggests that the subject preference can be eliminated by manipulating information structure (topicalisation). To investigate the effects of interaction between syntax and information structure on language processing, we tested the role of topic marking in sentence processing in Austrian Sign Language (ÖGS). We examined whether non-manual topic marking on the sentence-initial argument eliminates the subject preference using event-related brain potentials. We replicated the finding of the subject preference in ÖGS by identifying an N400-family response to object-first sentences. Further, topic marking in ÖGS influenced the processing of the topic argument itself and later processing stages. This suggests that interpretation of topic marking imposes additional processing costs, relative to syntactic reanalysis. (VLID)4590063

Abstract

Soil organisms, including earthworms, are a key component of terrestrial ecosystems. However, little is known about their diversity, their distribution, and the threats affecting them. We compiled a global dataset of sampled earthworm communities from 6928 sites in 57 countries as a basis for predicting patterns in earthworm diversity, abundance, and biomass. We found that local species richness and abundance typically peaked at higher latitudes, displaying patterns opposite to those observed in aboveground organisms. However, high species dissimilarity across tropical locations may cause diversity across the entirety of the tropics to be higher than elsewhere. Climate variables were found to be more important in shaping earthworm communities than soil properties or habitat cover. These findings suggest that climate change may have serious implications for earthworm communities and for the functions they provide.

Abstract

Soil organisms, including earthworms, are a key component of terrestrial ecosystems. However, little is known about their diversity, their distribution, and the threats affecting them. We compiled a global dataset of sampled earthworm communities from 6928 sites in 57 countries as a basis for predicting patterns in earthworm diversity, abundance, and biomass. We found that local species richness and abundance typically peaked at higher latitudes, displaying patterns opposite to those observed in aboveground organisms. However, high species dissimilarity across tropical locations may cause diversity across the entirety of the tropics to be higher than elsewhere. Climate variables were found to be more important in shaping earthworm communities than soil properties or habitat cover. These findings suggest that climate change may have serious implications for earthworm communities and for the functions they provide.

24. Universal jurisdiction and international crimes: Constraints and best practices

Abstract

This report summarises the proceedings of a workshop organised by the European Parliament’s Subcommittee on Human Rights (DROI), in association with the Committee on Legal Affairs (JURI) and the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE). Academics and practitioners discussed international trends as regards the concept of universal jurisdiction and the EU’s approach to promoting universal jurisdiction through its external relations, as well as practical experience in applying universal jurisdiction in the fight against impunity in Europe. The experts agreed that universal jurisdiction can play a role as part of a wider accountability strategy, complementary to international courts and prosecutions on other jurisdictional bases. They recommended more specialised training for investigators, prosecutors, judges and law enforcement staff for universal jurisdiction cases and more cooperation at EU and international level. Speakers supported the initiative for a multilateral treaty on mutual legal assistance and extradition. Special attention in universal jurisdiction cases must be given to victims seeking justice, including for sexual and gender-based crimes.

27. Ist das Gesicht ein besonderer Stimulus? : Frühe und späte Stufen der Gesichterverarbeitung bei Kindern und Jugendlichen mit Autismus

Die vorliegende Arbeit untersuchte bei Kindern und Jugendlichen mit Autismus, inwieweit frühe und späte Stufen der visuellen Verarbeitung auf Gesichter spezialisiert sind. Der Arbeit ging die wissenschaftlich fundierte Beobachtung voraus, dass die Stimulusklasse „Gesicht“ in der visuellen Verarbeitung von Objekten eine Sonderrolle einnimmt, die sich sowohl auf frühen als auch auf späten Stufen beobachten lässt. Bei Kindern und Erwachsenen mit Autismus zeigen sich hingegen Schwächen in der Verarbeitung sozial relevanter Informationen. Für sie wurden immer wieder Abweichungen von einer gesichtsspezifischen Verarbeitung dokumentiert. Die Befunde beziehen sich dabei bisher vornehmlich auf späte Verarbeitungsstufen. Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit war es, das Zusammenspiel von Defiziten und Kompetenzen auf frühen und / oder späten Stufen des Gesichterverarbeitungsprozesses genauer zu beleuchten. Dafür wurde in jeweils einer Gruppe autistischer und nicht-autistischer Kinder mit insgesamt drei Experimenten die Spezialisierung des gesichterverarbeitenden Systems auf frühen und späten Stufen des visuellen Verarbeitungsprozesses erfasst. Um die frühen Verarbeitungsstufen zu untersuchen, wurde zunächst in einem Verhaltensexperiment die automatische Aufmerksamkeit für Gesichter angesprochen. Unter sehr kurzer Darbietungszeit sollten die Kinder Tiere in Bildern erkennen. Die autistischen Kinder zeigten bei dieser Aufgabe weniger Ablenkung durch gelegentlich dargebotene Gesichter als die nicht-autistische Kinder. Die Ergebnisse deuteten an, dass Gesichter für autistische Kinder auf frühen Verarbeitungsstufen weniger salient sind. Dieser Befund wurde gestützt von der anschließenden Untersuchung auf neuronaler Ebene: mit Hilfe ereigniskorrelierter hirnelektrischer Potentiale wurde die früheste beobachtbare Reaktion auf visuelle Stimuli sichtbar gemacht. Insbesondere für die frühe Komponente N170, die die sehr frühe Verarbeitungsstufe der strukturellen Enkodierung repräsentiert, wurden deutliche Unterschiede zwischen den Gruppen offenbar. Zwar zeigten auch die autistischen Kinder stärkere Reaktionen auf Gesichter als auf Objekte. Ihre neuronale Reaktion auf verschiedene Arten von Gesichtern zeigte sich hingegen weniger differenziert. Zudem wies die Spannungsverteilung bei den autistischen Kindern nicht die für Gesichter übliche Rechtslateralisierung auf. Die Ergebnisse legen bereits für sehr frühe Verarbeitungsstufen grundlegende Unterschiede zwischen den Gruppen in den neuronalen Aktivierungsmustern nahe. In einem Reaktionszeitexperiment wurden schließlich die späteren Stufen der Gesichterverarbeitung untersucht. Betrachtet wurde die komplexe Verarbeitung mehrerer Stimulusinformationen in Form von gleichzeitiger Verarbeitung von Identität und emotionalem Ausdruck eines Gesichts. Dafür sollten Gesichter anhand einer Stimulusinformation klassifiziert werden, wobei die andere Information ignoriert werden sollte. Bei gesunden Kindern bestätigte sich eine asymmetrische Verarbeitung der Informationen: die Verarbeitung des emotionalen Gesichtsausdrucks wurde von der Identität des Gesichts beeinflusst, aber nicht umgekehrt. Die autistischen Kinder zeigten hingegen eine voneinander unabhängige Verarbeitung für beide Informationen. Insgesamt ließ sich für die autistischen Kinder bereits auf frühen Stufen eine deutliche Abweichungen von den Reaktionsmustern der nicht-autistischen Kinder feststellen, die sich auf späten Stufen zu manifestieren scheinen. Diese Ergebnisse wurden vor dem Hintergrund etablierter Gesichterverarbeitungsmodelle und verschiedener kognitiver Erklärungsansätze aus der Autismusforschung diskutiert.

Abstract

Under sleep loss, vigilance is reduced and attentional failures emerge progressively. It becomes difficult to maintain stable performance over time, leading to growing performance variability (i.e., state instability) in an individual and among subjects. Task duration plays a major role in the maintenance of stable vigilance levels, such that the longer the task, the more likely state instability will be observed. Vulnerability to sleep-loss-dependent performance decrements is highly individual and is also modulated by a polymorphism in the human clock gene PERIOD3 (PER3). By combining two different protocols, we manipulated sleep-wake history by once extending wakefulness for 40 h (high sleep pressure condition) and once by imposing a short sleep-wake cycle by alternating 160 min of wakefulness and 80 min naps (low sleep pressure condition) in a within-subject design. We observed that homozygous carriers of the long repeat allele of PER3 (PER3 (5/5) ) experienced a greater time-on-task dependent performance decrement (i.e., a steeper increase in the number of lapses) in the Psychomotor Vigilance Task compared to the carriers of the short repeat allele (PER3 (4/4) ). These genotype-dependent effects disappeared under low sleep pressure conditions, and neither motivation, nor perceived effort accounted for these differences. Our data thus suggest that greater sleep-loss related attentional vulnerability based on the PER3 polymorphism is mirrored by a greater state instability under extended wakefulness in the short compared to the long allele carriers. Our results undermine the importance of time-on-task related aspects when investigating inter-individual differences in sleep loss-induced behavioral vulnerability.

30. Zwei neue Saumassoziationen der Klasse Trifolio- Geranietea sanguinei aus dem norddeutschen Tiefland

Abstract

Saumgesellschaften magerer Standorte waren bislang im norddeutschen Tiefland nur ungenügend dokumentiert. Unter anderem aus Anlass der Erstellung der „Pflanzengesellschaften Mecklenburg- Vorpommerns“ wurde die Neubeschreibung von zwei Assoziationen nötig. Das Agrostio capillaris-Agrimonietum procerae ass. nov. ist eine mesophytische Saumgesellschaft, die von Agrimonia procera dominiert wird. Das Artemisio campestris-Vincetoxicetum hirundinariae ass. nov. ist eine xerophytische Staudenflur der Ostseeküste, die von Vincetoxicum hirundinaria beherrscht wird. Beide Gesellschaften werden durch Tabellen dokumentiert und floristisch, standörtlich und chorologisch charakterisiert. Ferner wird ihre synsystematische Stellung diskutiert: Sie gehören innerhalb der Klasse Trifolio-Geranietea sanguinei zur Unterklasse Trifolio-Geranienea sanguinei. Das Agrostio-Agrimonietum lässt sich am besten im Trifolion medii innerhalb einer emendierten Ordnung Origanetalia vulgaris der mesophytischen Säume fassen. Das Artemisio-Vincetoxicetum dagegen wird in den Zentralverband Galio littoralis-Geranion sanguinei der xerophytischen Ordnung Antherico ramosi-Geranietalia sanguinei gestellt.

Abstract

The SEnECA Stakeholder Analysis aims at listing relevant stakeholders for the EU’s Central Asia Policy and categorising them according to their power and interest. This will enable the project to communicate more effectively to different groups of stakeholders, tailored to their power and interest. The document also provides insights, gathered through semi-structured interviews, on how stake-holders communicate their work to the European public and on how stakeholders are or are not involved in EU decision-making. The SEnECA Stakeholder Analysis gathered information of 521 stakeholders and categorised them in four types (type 1: Monitor, type 2: Keep informed, type 3: Keep informed and engaged, type 4: Involve in the project) according to their power and interest.

34. Adult hippocampal neurogenesis and plasticity in the infrapyramidal bundle of the mossy fiber projection: I. Co-regulation by activity.

Abstract

BESIDES THE MASSIVE PLASTICITY AT THE LEVEL OF SYNAPSES, WE FIND IN THE HIPPOCAMPUS OF ADULT MICE AND RATS TWO SYSTEMS WITH VERY STRONG MACROSCOPIC STRUCTURAL PLASTICITY: adult neurogenesis, that is the lifelong generation of new granule cells, and dynamic changes in the mossy fibers linking the dentate gyrus to area CA3. In particular the anatomy of the infrapyramidal mossy fiber tract (IMF) changes in response to a variety of extrinsic and intrinsic stimuli. Because mossy fibers are the axons of granule cells, the question arises whether these two types of plasticity are linked. Using immunohistochemistry for markers associated with axonal growth and pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC)-GFP mice to visualize the post-mitotic maturation phase of adult hippocampal neurogenesis, we found that newly generated mossy fibers preferentially but not exclusively contribute to the IMF. The neurogenic stimulus of an enriched environment increased the volume of the IMF. In addition, the IMF grew with a time course consistent with axonal outgrowth from the newborn neurons after the induction of neurogenic seizures using kainate. These results indicate that two aspects of plasticity in the adult hippocampus, mossy fiber size and neurogenesis, are related and may share underlying mechanisms. In a second part of this study, published separately (Krebs et al., 2011) we have addressed the question of whether there is a shared genetics underlying both traits.
