A journalist relates, through remembrances of conversations with reporter Jean Stein, the latter's introduction to journalism and his start in extreme radical reporting. Starting at 'Time' in 1961, Stein was quickly entrenched in late 1960s San Francisco Bay Area political movements. His initial attempts to merely report activities left him feeling empty, and led to his eventual decision to become part of the Free Speech Movement, rather than a simple reporter.
